“This book is for true lovers of romance! A unique, strong, feisty heroine. And the hero! Gah! He’s an alpha hero that you will fall head-over-heels for.”

~Adriana Locke, USA Today and Washington Post

Synopsis

Winter Nobleman is complicated. To say the least.

It was supposed to be simple. Go to Paris, find a client’s daughter, and close a multi-million-dollar deal. Easy. Then I meet her. Stormy blue eyes, quick wit, and the secrets she keeps on the tip of her tongue make me forget my mission for a moment, or six, and why I’m in Paris in the first place—to bring her home.

Distracted by her beauty, I fail to notice the others lurking with missions of their own.

Bennett Everest is the twist I never saw coming. Talk about perfect timing.

He steals my breath the first time I see him and breathes hope back into my heart. He’s a giant in my eyes, a king among men with patience and love to share in spades. Six foot three. Whiskey-colored eyes. Solid gold on the inside.

Despite the dirty deeds of my past, he sees the person I am meant to be and not the person I have become.

If the lies don’t kill us, will the truth set us free?

“Absolutely Best Romantic Suspense of 2019!” – Lulu, FB/GR

“Bennett is so so sexy and romantic. He’s THE best book boyfriend.” -Barbara, Goodreads

“With stellar writing and the kind of plot that you instantly connect with, Force of Nature was everything I love in a story and more.” -LitlJen, Goodreads

My Review

Truth and lies…that’s what everything in life always seems to come down to and what every human being seems to struggle with when it comes to who deserves the story of their life and who only gets the insignificant parts.

Winter Nobleman is a woman with an unkind past – one that has defined her for far too long…one that seems to keep taking regardless of how little Winter has left to give. Her eyes carry secrets behind them, but it’s unclear what her true story is because she’s not ready to give it; it’s the one thing that she still has some control over, which means readers and even Bennett Everest will have to wait for Winter’s truths to be unraveled.

S.L. Scott has created some of my favorite alpha heroes, but I just might have found one to uproot all of them – Bennett Everest. He may be the youngest of the brothers, but he understands what matters in life, and his protective nature easily draws people in. But when it comes to Winter and what he’s been tasked to do, what appears to be and what actually is changes things for Bennett, complicating the mission, but also allowing him to see what’s truly important in life and in love.

Winter and Bennett are forces of nature – hellbent on making their own ways. That’s part of what draws them to each other but it’s also what makes things difficult for both of them. And as their story continues, Scott leads them and readers down a dangerous yet seductive path and the twists and turns that the plot line takes is what allows the unexpected to occur, keeping readers guessing as well as riveted to the pages as the mystery unfolds, heading toward its resolution.

Paris is the perfect city for Winter and Bennett’s story; it’s romantic, intriguing, majestic, and its air of mystery adds to the suspense that is strewn throughout the story line. In its own right, the City of Lights is a pivotal character in Force of Nature and the role it plays lives up to every single aspect of this beautiful and enlightening environment.

As an English teacher, I revel in scenes where witty banter and seamless dialogue is created; there’s just something about an author’s ability to blend and deliver snark, sweet, and steam effortlessly that makes my appreciation for the story and its creator that much richer, and I can wholeheartedly say that that’s exactly what S.L. Scott accomplished in Winter and Bennett’s story.

My Review

A devil. A monster. A criminal. A murderer. A hacker.

Ruler of New York City’s underbelly. Boogeyman of Manhattan. King of corruption.

Ruthless. Unethical. Conniving. Duplicitous.

All of these monikers and descriptors epitomize who Damon King is, and as Tara Leigh takes readers into his underground kingdom in Cruel Sanctuary, she introduces us to the man behind the myth, and from what we’ve learned in book one, it’s clear that this anti-hero isn’t afraid to do what needs to be done in order to achieve what he wants to achieve, regardless of the fall out or the costs of others, especially those who stand in his way.

I like that Damon doesn’t pretend to be anything that he isn’t, but I really wanted his character to be fleshed out more…I wanted more of his backstory…more insight into how he built his empire…more information about the reasons for his claim on Aislinn. I feel like there is so much to who Damon is at his core, but all I was given was the fact that he’s a bad man and as much as he wants Aislinn, he knows he can’t keep her because she doesn’t fit into his world.

Aislinn Granville is a fierce, snarky, and independent heroine – one whose ethics drive her. She’s always been on the right side of the law and a past incident makes her a victim’s advocate, risking it all to help those in need. But when her world implodes, she doesn’t know who to believe or who to trust and she finds herself being protected by a man who should repulse and scare her, not make her desire things she’s only fantasized about and willingly…or somewhat willingly…give herself to a man who defines everything that she abhors.

The main conflict in Cruel Sanctuary is quite intriguing, and there is sexual tension and angst galore. It’s clear that Damon was lying in wait to claim Aislinn as his, even if he knows it won’t last because they come from two very different worlds and have to very different views on how life is to be lived. And with everything that goes down in book one, the threat to Aislinn’s life is real but who’s willing to sacrifice themselves for her is not as clear because everything she’s believed has been turned upside, causing

I enjoyed Damon and Aislinn’s story and I’m eager to see how everything plays out in Corrupt Savior, but I will admit that the ending frustrated the heck out of me because what happens seems too easy, especially given how Damon has been when it comes to Aislinn, and I also struggled with the fact that Aislinn seems quite oblivious to the truth beneath the lies when it comes to those closest to her. It’s almost like her book smarts takes precedence over her street smarts, and while there’s nothing wrong with that fact, when it comes to who she should trust and who she should watch out for, she’s blinded by who she thinks these men are and not who they truly are or could be.

I absolutely love anti-heroes…there’s just something about their over-the-top attitude, their jerkish behavior, and their dominating ways. And I also can’t get enough of feisty heroines who aren’t afraid to put their alpha a-holes in their place, and I’m sure as this duet continues, readers will see more of these attributes resonate form the pages.

Excerpt

“Put me down.” I keep my cool, making the demand as stiffly as if I’m asking him to pass the salt.

But my show of composure crumbles as he angles his head to look at me. Barely an inch separates the tips of our noses. I stare, entranced by the fine scar that marks his left eyebrow. I want to kiss it.

“Or what?”

“Hmmm?”

One corner of his mouth tics up, his eyes flicking away from mine. “You look damn good in my arms.”

I follow his stare and am met by our reflection in the bathroom mirror. I blink, taking in the sight of my naked body held against King’s broad chest, the tanned, inked forearms I’d practically drooled over earlier now wrapped around my back and behind my knees.

I am naked. King is dressed.

There is something indecently erotic about our image. I look like the heroine of an old Harlequin novel—a down on her luck maid or secretary about to be ravished by her big, bad boss. A powerless woman soon to be stripped of her virtue.

I know what it’s like when a man overpowers a woman. When he uses force to take what’s not his. To hurt and abuse and terrorize.

And I know that this isn’t that.

It may not look like it, but I have the power in this situation. Damon King came to me. First at my apartment and now in his. He broke down two doors tonight.

I may be naked, but the only reason he’s touching me is because he knows I want him to.

Emboldened, I look away from our reflection and directly into King’s eyes again. Leaning in, I brush the tip of my nose against his. “Kiss me.”

I’ve barely pushed the words out when his lips are on mine. The taste of him is an explosion inside my mouth. Smooth and potent, but with a hint of mint. As if he swilled some of that Balvenie from his bar and then sucked on a peppermint candy.

He kisses like a conqueror. Stealing my breath along with the last of my reservations.

He kisses like a king. Staking his claim, demanding his due.

Dylan Locke knows that pining over the young ingenue Audrey Lind is pointless. He can’t offer her what she wants. He definitely can’t give her what she needs. Thank goodness she’s half a world away, and he doesn’t have to deal with his attraction head on.

But fate has other plans for him, and when Audrey once again lands in his path, it’s only too easy to fall back into their easy rhythm. And then their easy banter. And of course, each other’s arms.

He tells himself nothing has changed. She still wants forever, and he still thinks tomorrow is long enough. But watching her search isn’t as easy as he thought it would be, and now Dylan must figure out if he’s really the love Scrooge he professes to be or if he’s been Fate’s willing victim all along.

My Review

At the end of Sweet Liar, readers were left wondering if the passion and connection Dylan and Audrey shared would be enough for him to see past their age difference, his commitment issues, and the fact that their lives seemed to headed in drastically different directions. And to be honest…I really didn’t know what Dylan would decide or if Audrey would wait long enough for him to change his mind about defining what they mean to each other and to actually take a risk on what could be love despite his misgivings and his negative views on a forever kind of relationship.

But that’s where Fate steps in…kismet if you will…because after months of separation, Dylan and Audrey reconnect and find that their attraction and desire for one another is still there, but that doesn’t mean Dylan is ready to go all in; in fact, he’s still holding firm to his decision to keep Audrey at arm’s length. Regardless of his head overruling his heart, though, Dylan still wants Audrey in his life, so while it’s not easy, these two become friends, which means that readers as well as Audrey still hold out hope that Dylan will finally realize that Audrey is meant to be his in every possible way.

It’s important that Sweet Fate was told through Dylan’s perspective because

it’s truly up to him whether he’s going to stop fighting his desire and feelings for Audrey and see what happens or if he’ll continue to question his thoughts and his actions, assessing every single aspect of his need for her. I don’t think I would have liked or enjoyed this duet if Dylan’s point of view wasn’t shared because he’s the one who doesn’t do love anymore…he’s the one who isn’t willing to put his heart on the line again, ensuring his already fractured heart doesn’t splinter anymore. And if their story was only told through Audrey’s perspective, I would not have understood why she kept going back to a man who couldn’t or wouldn’t give her what she wants.

I do wish readers were privy to Audrey’s perspective in some situations, but that’s because I love getting the full picture of everything that happens and the reasons behind each action.

Here’s why I think their age difference works for them, and I don’t think it’s because of Dylan being wiser or more experienced due to his age…I think it’s the fact that Audrey is a hopeless romantic…an optimist about life and love…a beautiful, sweet, and forgiving young woman who is willing to put EVERYTHING on the line for love, and that’s exactly the kind of woman that Dylan needs to wake him up…to show him that love doesn’t have to cost pain…to help him understand that she’ll protect his heart with every part of herself.

Sweet Fate is full of sexual tension due to the push and pull between Dylan and Audrey and the constant question about whether or not Dylan will give in or hold steadfast to his quest to keep his heart intact.

I adore Laurelin Paige’s stories, and I enjoyed her Dirty Sweet duet; Dylan and Audrey’s journey to happily ever after isn’t an easy one, but most of the time, love isn’t, and it’s in the struggle where people truly see what they’re made of, which is exactly the story Paige told in Sweet Liar and Sweet Fate.

Excerpt

It was a completely different experience kissing Audrey, after I’d accepted the gravity of the feelings I had for her.

I knew the kiss meant nothing, that it would lead nowhere, but it felt like being bathed in radiant light.

Like I was an imprisoned man in a dark prison cell who, for one brief moment, was allowed to step outside into the sunlight. I was completely present for it. Each brush of her lips, each touch of her tongue—I memorized it all, imprinted every second into my brain so that I’d have it forever. I might still have worn shackles with no hope of freedom, but this moment mattered. It was real and divine, and I would cherish every last second of the stolen sunshine until my dying day.

I would’ve been content with only kissing, with just the shallow lifts and falls of her chest and frantic hands trying to caress and cling.

But Audrey had other ideas in mind, demonstrated by the quick work of her hands at my waist, unbuckling my belt, undoing my trousers, the slip of her hand inside the opening to stroke the outline of my very prominent erection.

“This,” she said between kisses. She pulled at the elastic waistband of my boxers and dipped her hand in to touch me directly.

I hissed at the feel of her soft hand against my hot skin.

“I want this,” she begged. “Can I have this?”

About the Author

With over 2.4 million books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. Her international success started with her very first series, the Fixed Trilogy, which, alone, has sold over 1 million copies, and earned her the coveted #1 spot on Amazon’s bestseller list in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, simultaneously. This title also was named in People magazine as one of the top 10 most downloaded books of 2014. She’s also been #1 over all books at the Apple Book Store with more than one title in more than one country. She’s published both independently and with MacMillan’s St. Martin’s Press and Griffin imprints as well as many other publishers around the world including Harper Collins in Germany and Hachette/Little Brown in the U.K. With her edgy, trope-flipped stories of smart women and strong men, she’s managed to secure herself among today’s romance royalty.

Paige has a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Theater and a Masters of Business Administration with a Marketing emphasis, and she credits her writing success to what she learned from both programs, though she’s also an avid learner, constantly trying to challenge her mind with new and exciting ideas and concepts. While she loves psychological thrillers and witty philosophical books and entertainment, she is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: REX by Nicole Edwards

The Walkers of Coyote Ridge, Book 6

REX

Release Date: March 26, 2019

Cover Image Copyright © Wander Aguiar Photography

Cover Model(s): Preston Thompson

Whether it was due to lack of funds, lack of desire, or one lame excuse after another, Rex Sharpe has managed to ignore the one and only dream he’s ever had: turning his family’s dilapidated old farmhouse into a bed and breakfast. Until now. When his cousin Travis Walker decides to invest in a venture that will help revitalize the small town of Coyote Ridge, Rex knows it’s time to put up or shut up.They say third time’s a charm, right? Jack Cunningham learns that’s not always true. When his world is unexpectedly tipped on its axis, Jack does what he does best. He runs. Only this time, he doesn’t get far. A one-night encounter with a sexy cowboy has Jack’s already topsy-turvy world spinning even more, and he soon learns, it’s only the beginning.

I adore Nicole Edwards’ Walker family! I can’t get enough of their familial bond and the way they step up for each other no matter the situation. And with her newest release, REX, Edwards branches out a bit further on the Walker family tree with one of the Walker’s cousins and the city boy who may or may not be just who Rex needs to let go of his past and focus on his future.

Rex Sharpe is a man whose abusive childhood/teenage years has done a number on, and as Edwards reveals the chain of events that led to the burdens that Rex now carries, I wondered if someone could truly recover from that trauma and hold steadfast to what he’s always wanted to do, which is make something of himself using his family’s land and creating a home away from home for people to make memories, perhaps in this quest also finding a way to heal himself.

Jack Cunningham is quite the hot mess when he finds himself in Coyote Ridge in need of assistance due to his drunken state, and I’m more than sure he didn’t expect anything to happen between himself and the sexy cowboy who lent him a hand, but it does, sending this city boy spiraling even further down the rabbit hole, attempting to figure out who the hell he is and what he wants out of life.

I have to admit…for a good chunk of the story, I didn’t like Jack; he frustrated the heck out of me, not only because of his runner mentality but also because he didn’t truly know who he was or what he wanted, which more than messed with his head and mine. Don’t get me wrong…I understand Jack not having a handle on his sexuality, especially due to his track record when it came to his past relationships and broken engagements, but the fact that he so easily gave himself to Rex at the beginning of the story but then refused to accept what he felt for Rex or name what was clearly between them didn’t sit well with me; in fact, I expected Jack to run again because that’s been his M.O., even though I hoped he’d finally pull his head out of his rear end and face what he’s always known about himself but never would admit.

Things between Rex and Jack aren’t easy; in fact, they’re quite difficult due to a number of unanswered and unacknowledged questions. And for this reason, even though these two hook up at the beginning of the story, any kind of relationship between them is quite the slow burn, and sometimes, I even wondered if it was possible for this cowboy and city boy to make a go of anything more than a sexual release, but I kept reading hoping that Jack would realize whatever he needed to in order to see how could he and Rex could be if he stayed put and never ran again.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Walkers of Coyote Ridge story without the brood of men, women, and children showing up in REX, and because this family has always been close and has always thrown down for each other regardless if those in need wanted it or not, I knew they’d have a say in helping Rex achieve his dream and also find a way to prove to both Rex and Jack that when it comes to love, it’s a risk worth taking, and because they’ve all been through variations of the drama and angst that Rex and Jack are dealing with, I knew if they listened to this family and their sage advice that they’d find their happily ever after even if it took them a little longer than anyone wanted or expected.

4 Poison Apples

Saturday, January 5, 2019

“I GET THE FUNNY FEELIN’ WE’RE NOT gonna meet the deadline, Duke,” Rex Sharpe told his dog as they stood in the living room and surveyed the space before them. “I mean, six months might be doable if I had a crew.”

But he didn’t.

He peered over at Duke, his three-year-old, floppy-eared retriever mix. “Perhaps you’d be willin’ to pitch in?”

Duke didn’t even have the decency to acknowledge him.

“Seriously?” Rex chuckled. “Maybe swingin’ a hammer’s not in your wheelhouse, but perhaps we could find somethin’.”

Duke cast a half-interested look his way.

“What? As much as I want to, I can’t do it all by myself.”

And if he tried, Rex was going to have to modify the timeline. Again. Never mind the fact that he had overhauled the entire plan at least a dozen times, usually pushing it out a year, then another and another, hoping, with significant optimism, one day he’d find the motivation and get his ass in gear.

At some point, optimism was going to take on an entirely new meaning.

And then a year ago it had hit him. He’d woken up one morning raring to go, ready to work. He’d done well for a while, putting in twelve-hour days to focus on the attic. Once that was done, in an effort to keep the momentum, Rex had given up the small apartment he’d been renting to move into the house. But as usual, he had found a few dozen excuses not to get started on the old farmhouse he was turning into a bed-and-breakfast. Most of those mitigating circumstances had been ridiculous, but hey, what could he say?

“I’m an optimistic procrastinator, Duke. That’s all there is to it.”

Duke let out that familiar doggy sigh. The one that said he’d heard it all before.

“What? There is such a thing,” Rex insisted, peering around the empty room. “And fine, maybe it’s a decade or so overdue, but still. A man can only do so much, right? I cleared it out. That’s a start.”

Duke didn’t seem to agree with him, but Rex knew he wouldn’t. His dog was nothing if not skeptical.

Despite the timeline being roughly thirteen years overdue, and the plan pretty much nonexistent at this point, Rex wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. He had faith that this place would come together. Eventually. Maybe not in the next six months like he wanted, but he was trying.

In fact, he finally had something to show for it. For the past eleven months, give or take a week or three, Rex had worked nonstop. And thanks to his dedication, he’d managed to remodel the third floor completely, turning what used to be a dark, musty attic into a functional living space for a future manager. Two bedrooms, one bath, a small eat-in kitchen, nice-sized den, lots of windows to let in light, even a couple of balconies. It was exactly how he’d planned it, and all that hard work had added an additional one thousand square feet of living space.

Not that he’d needed more. The eight-thousand-plus-square-foot farmhouse that sat dead center in the middle of downtown Coyote Ridge was big enough already. While the house resided on a decent five acres, Rex also owned the two thousand acres of farmland behind it that had once been considered part of the adjacent town. At some point, it had been annexed into their county, officially making it part of Coyote Ridge.

Needless to say, he had more space than he would ever need.

For himself, anyway. However, it was perfect for the dream he’d had since he was a boy. A dream that involved turning the dilapidated old house into something functional, utilizing every inch of space for what would be a phenomenal getaway.

Sooner or later.

And converting the attic into living space, as well as moving in, was just the beginning. The rest, starting with this–

“Son of a bitch!” Rex dropped the hammer, grabbed his hand, and growled through the pain.

Two hundred seventeen. No. Make that eighteen. Yep. That was the number of times he’d hit his damn thumb with that damn hammer since he started the ridiculous task of rebuilding the place.

Fucking hammer.

He took a deep breath and stared at the wall. Or rather what would be a wall. Technically, right now it was only a few two-by-fours being put in place to hold up the floor above, so it didn’t quite qualify.

Yet.

Considering Rex would have to rebuild and remodel thousands of square feet, you’d think one little wall wouldn’t give him so many problems.

Fucking wall.

He inhaled deeply, exhaled slowly. In. Out.

With the first phase—the third-floor conversion—completed, it was time for Rex to focus on the house. Tearing it down to the studs hadn’t been easy. Day in and day out, his ass had been ripping out and hauling more debris than he cared to think about, and truth be told, there were times Rex wanted to say to hell with it all. It would be easy to sell, move somewhere else, and forget the only dream he’d ever had.

“Easy’s for pussies,” he mumbled to himself.

He wasn’t going to give up now. No fucking way. He’d worked too damn hard for that.

“Do you think I should’ve sold it, Duke? Left this small town and started over somewhere else?”

Duke gave a light snort but didn’t lift his head up off the floor.

“If I’d done that, who would’ve picked you up at the pound, huh, buddy? Answer me that.”

There for a while, Rex had come damn close to selling off the family property, leaving the small town he and his younger brother, Rafe, had grown up in, and finding somewhere else to put down roots. A place they wouldn’t be the outcasts, the misfits, the kids whispered to have done the vilest of things. The rumors were endless.

While Rex and Rafe had been cleared of all crimes, people still weren’t quite sure they believed what had happened that fateful night fourteen years ago. Some even claimed it was premeditated. Rex would admit, he’d entertained the idea of his father dying a time or two, but never the way it went down. While he had hated the old man, Rex wasn’t that evil. And he knew Rafe wasn’t, either.

There were only a handful of people who knew the sordid details of what had happened that night. Rex would’ve preferred to keep it a secret, but telling the tale had meant keeping Rafe out of jail. So, after some encouragement from his aunts and uncles on his mother’s side, Rex had relayed the information. Then he’d had to do it again, filling in the holes for the sheriff. Of course, Sheriff Monroe—having been the lowlife that he was—had been more than happy to air their dirty laundry with anyone who asked.

Unfortunately, you couldn’t have secrets in a small town. And still, some had felt it necessary to pass judgment over the years. Not so much anymore. While the town had constantly questioned what was going to come of the vacant house that sat on Main Street, somewhere along the way, they’d gotten used to it.

Of course, there were still rumors. Some ridiculous, others insulting. And those damn rumors were the reason selling had seemed the logical thing to do. If, of course, Rex was the type to run from his problems.

Which he wasn’t.

Not by a long shot.

So, he’d stood his ground, dug in his boots. This had been his father’s childhood home, and his grandfather’s, and his great grandfather’s, and so on and so forth. While he had no desire to let Billy Don’s legacy live on, there was no reason to let one bad seed ruin the entire orchard. Before Billy Don, the Sharpes had built a well-respected reputation in town. They were upstanding citizens, hard workers, always willing to lend a hand when necessary. And with that same hard work and loyalty his ancestors had shown, Rex had proven he was part of the good bunch despite who his father was.

Unfortunately, procrastination was a trait he’d inherited right along with trustworthiness and dependability. So, no, his pet project wasn’t coming along quite the way he’d initially envisioned. Then again, he’d been a naive teenager when he originally thought it would be a piece of cake to transform this old run-down farmhouse into a bed-and-breakfast that would draw people from all over.

Fucking dreamer.

There was no denying that life had taken a series of twists and turns that had gotten him off track for a while. But he was right where he’d always dreamed he would be. Sure, the path to get here had been riddled with bumps and bruises and boatloads of disappointment, but his intentions were still the same. He would turn what was nothing more than a house haunted with bad memories into something worth staying in.

And he would do it alone if he had to.

Of course, that would take far longer than he wanted, but a man could only lure his friends to pitch in so many times. As it was, his family were his closest friends. Cousins, mostly. CJ, Jaxson. They’d been there for him through it all. While they rarely balked when he asked for their help, Rex knew it wasn’t fair to them. Payment in the form of a six-pack only went so far.

If only Rafe would come home.

Rex sighed. “Not gonna happen,” he reminded himself.

Truth was, Rex figured he would never see Rafe again. It was a fear that had the power to steal the air from his lungs. He missed his brother. Had since the asshole walked out of his life a decade ago.

Seemed no matter how often Rex asked his brother to come home, he was either met with silence or resistance. Clearly the man had no desire to move back to Coyote Ridge. Too many bad memories, perhaps? Or maybe Rafe simply blamed Rex for what had happened. That was his worst fear. He’d spent years wondering if that was the real reason Rafe had left.

Either way, Rex had to move forward. He had to prove he had what it took to do right by his family. And maybe Rafe would come back one day to see all that he’d done.

So here he was with the constant reminder looming before him. Desperate and eager to expel the demons from his childhood home and start new memories for himself, his brother, and anyone who wanted to venture to this small patch of Texas real estate Rex called home.

Getting this place up to par hadn’t been easy up to this point, and he expected no less in the days to come. Transforming the farmhouse into a bed-and-breakfast was, in theory, a brilliant idea. Or it had been.

Back before he had actually started working on the damn thing.

Back before he had truly understood just how much work it needed.

And fuck all, it needed some serious work.

New hardwood throughout would mean new trim. New trim would mean new paint. New paint would mean new fixtures. Not to mention the new AC units, new doors, and windows, all of which had to be replaced for energy efficiency.

Those were just the bones.

That didn’t include all the work that would go into each of the seven bedrooms—five upstairs, two down. And of course, remodeling the kitchen, dining room, living room, game room, the four existing bathrooms, plus the four Rex intended to add. The only thing he could check off were the approvals from the Coyote Ridge historical committee, the inspector’s go-ahead on the structural soundness, and the completion of the third floor.

And to think, he was only a year into it.

Some thought Rex was crazy for wanting to stay in Coyote Ridge, to live in the house with the ghost of his dead father. And sure, there were bad memories, but there were a lot of good ones, too. Ones Rex wasn’t ready to forget. Like the evenings when he and Rafe would sit with Mama and watch television. The days when Grandpa would take them out to the barn, let them muck out the stalls, then take them back inside for ice cream after a job well done.

Which meant Rex needed to get his ass in gear because excuses were no longer part of his vocabulary. He had to get the place open so he could start bringing in some money.

His thoughts drifted back to Rafe as he scratched the top of Duke’s head. “Where do you think he’s at, boy? Still in Corpus? Or maybe down in Houston?”

Truth was, Rex didn’t know where Rafe was because Rafe wanted it that way.

“I suspect he’ll come back when he’s ready.” At least that was what Rex continued to tell himself.

Year after year, he waited patiently for his brother to come back. Rafe had left Coyote Ridge the day he turned eighteen. Hightailed right it out of Dodge without so much as a note. It had taken Rex nearly a year to track him down after that, but he finally had. He would never forget the day Rafe told him that he didn’t want anything to do with him. Even the thought made his chest ache.

These days, Rex did his best to keep in touch, texting Rafe at least once a week. Most of those went unanswered, but every so often, Rafe would respond, letting Rex know he was fine.

“I miss the asshole,” Rex grumbled as he pulled his ball cap off his head and ran his fingers through his hair. “Definitely miss him.”

Hoping that one day he’d come home was what motivated Rex to pick up that damn hammer again.

My Review

Welcome back to the Point. A city of sin, corruption, over indulgence, and danger; a place where villains run its streets, living by their own code and their own set of rules in order to protect their own and make their enemies understand that money isn’t everything when it comes to surviving its tattered and desolate streets.

But even in a place full of deviants and users, Solomon ‘Solo’ Sanders chooses to live by his own set of principles, doing what he needs to do to take care of his city and his obligations without completely crossing a line that he knows he can never come back from, and it’s for those very reasons that he lives an existence that is synonymous with his nickname.

It’s clear from the moment that Orley Vincent and her beautiful daughter, Noble, are introduced  in DOWNFALL that they don’t belong in a city like the Point. Their beauty, their light, and their look don’t fit into the constructs of the setting, which means there’s a rather nefarious reason as to why they’re using this tarnished place as their sanctuary, especially because the Point seems to be anything but for innocent people like Orley and Noble.

BUT…for all the times the Point has destroyed people’s lives, turned them into a darker version of themselves, used and abused their innocence, I’ve never doubted that there are still people in this environment willing to go out of their way to help others…to lend a hand when no one else would…to make things right when everything seems wrong, which means that, in Solo and Orley’s story, the Point remains a pivotal character but the light within its darkest is what’s explored and illustrated…the side of the Point that besides its unlawful nature and the soulless people looking to get ahead any way they can, there still remain those, like Solo…like Erica…like Lester who do right by others and who deserve the trust of others even in a city like the Point.  Solo and the other residents of Skylark Apartments are reminders that as dark, deadly, and dangerous the place they call home, there are those in the trenches putting one foot in front of the other in order to keep moving forward and doing so knowing that there are much easier, but corruptible ways to do so.

I’m all about the anti-heroes of the Point; they’re some of my favorite characters, but the fact that Solo remains honorable, protective, trustworthy, and willing to go out of his way to watch over an out-of-place red haired beauty and her adorably sweet daughter puts him above his Boss, the Boy Genius, and the Devil himself, and Solo’s nature does lead to his downfall, it’s one that he’d gladly take for the rest of his life.

Excerpt

~ORLEY~

Noble was making sure not to step on any cracks in the sidewalk. There were so many, it proved to be a daunting task which had her skipping around like a deranged bunny. I was so focused on her antics that I didn’t notice the huge figure coming around the corner at a rapid pace. Noble was directly in his path. His long legs ate up the distance at a steady job, and he had to jump to the side to avoid plowing Noble over. She fell backward onto her butt as the tatted-up man leapt to avoid her.

He had on the same hat he had been wearing the night before, and a pair of mirrored, aviator sunglasses covered his eyes. I could see my shocked reflection staring back at me as he paused, putting his hands on his knees so he could catch his breath. I wasn’t sure if he was winded from his run, or from the near-miss with the wide-eyed three-year-old at his feet. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, so I could see he was inked from his collarbone all the way down to the waistband of the black, nylon shorts he was wearing. Even his legs had random images and swirls of color decorating the strong lines. A light sheen of sweat covered every inch of his taut, artistic skin, highlighting his well-defined muscles and the lines of strength that made up his impressive build. He wasn’t my type. Not at all. In another life, I wouldn’t have thought to look twice at a guy who looked like him. Tattoos weren’t common in the circles where I used to travel. Now, caught unwillingly in this new life, I was having a hard time looking away.

I helped Noble to her feet, and noticed my daughter was also stunned into a rare silence in the presence of this imposing, impressive man.

He popped out one of his earbuds and pushed to his full height. I wished he weren’t wearing the mirrored glasses so I could see the color of his eyes. It was an odd reaction, so I cleared my throat and wiped my free hand nervously down the front of my jeans.

“Uh… Sorry. She’s been inside all day and has excess energy to burn.” He lifted his chin in acknowledgment and I tried not to swallow my tongue as a single drop of moisture slid down the strong line of his throat. I cleared my throat and squeezed Noble’s hand so tightly she squealed and gave me a questioning look. “Ummm… thank you for the rescue last night. I should have said something before taking off, but yesterday was quite possibly the second worst day of my life and I wasn’t thinking clearly. That guy was very scary; I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t intervened.”

RELEASE REVIEW: VIPER by Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank

VIPER

Book Two of the Fallen Angel Series

An MM Rock Romance

BROOKE BLAINE  ELLA FRANK

USA TODAY bestselling authors Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank continue the story of sexy Fallen Angel rockers Viper and Halo in VIPER.

Scorching chemistry. Red-hot lyrics. An irresistible bad boy.

Halo, the new lead singer for Fallen Angel, never stood a chance against Viper, the legendary lead guitarist for the band.

From the moment Halo set foot in Viper’s lair, the match was lit, threatening to consume the two men with the heat of their desire. But when their casual flings begins to morph into more, will it leave the entire band in flames?

After all, it may have been Halo who fell from grace, but it’s only a matter of time before Viper falls for an angel.

VIPER is the second book of the Fallen Angel Series and should be read following HALO. Halo and Viper’s story concludes in book three, ANGEL.

My Review

Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank left readers wanting more at the end of Halo after Viper and Angel finally acted on their mutual attraction, and even though that was one hell of a steamy and sensual encounter, I desperately wanted to get to the morning after in order to see exactly what the fallout, if any, would be and how these two sexy rockers would deal with their newfound relationship, if it even could be called that, amidst the paparazzi who wants a piece of the ‘next best thing’ and their bandmates who have already had to endure one lead singer quitting and their band needing a new name and a new sound in order to rise again.

Halo’s life has completely changed in such a short amount of time, and with those changes, he’s handled everything with such grace and poise, even if he’s spiraling in turmoil on the inside. Add to his new rockstar moniker the fact that what he feels for Viper is unlike anything he’s ever felt before, especially given the fact that he’s never been with a man, and it’s easy to understand why he’s hesitant, but what I loved most about him in book two is that he stood his ground in all facets of his life and didn’t allow others to push him around, even the surly lead guitarist who’s quickly becoming his everything.

Viper is a bit more jaded than most, which absolutely makes sense given his backstory and past experiences, and while readers are privy to both Halo and Viper’s perspective in the second part of their story, it felt like we were given a bit more insight into why Viper’s the way he is and why his feelings for Halo don’t just complicate things for him but mess with him in ways that Viper can’t quite figure out, which leads him to say and do things he regrets, but hopefully he can learn from them as well.

For any new relationship, there are bound to be bumps in the road, but Viper and Halo have to deal with a few more complications due to their on-the-rise celebrity status, Viper’s hesitancies, and the attempts to figure out how to define what Viper and Halo feel for each other while still pretending that what’s between them is only sexual.

While Viper and Halo are front and center in this story, and rightly so since it’s about their relationship, the other band members are just as important and as Blaine and Frank take readers behind-the-scenes and provide the ins and outs of what it takes to make a new name for themselves, each of them brings something all their own to the group and it’s been fun getting to know all of them better and taking this journey with them.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW: A LESSON IN THORNS by Sierra Simone

A Lesson In Thorns (Thornchapel #1) by Sierra Simone

Blurb

Once upon a time, six children stumbled upon a wild place hidden deep in the moors, shrouded by secrets and fog. There we played a game among the roses and the thorns that would change us forever, that would follow us the rest of our lives. A game that ended with a hard kiss in the rain and tattered flower petals fluttering from above…

And twelve years later, we’re back.

The heir.
The dreamer.
The priest.
The genius.
The socialite.
The saint.

I’m not going to dream of a forgotten place covered in thorns every night.
I won’t be enchanted by Thornchapel and its glossy, glamorous people. I’m not going to fall in love or have my heart torn in two.

I’m not telling the truth.

Because as this place slowly tightens its coil of secrets and thorns around us, as we uncover the knotted mysteries that grow here, the six of us begin to unravel into filthy, holy pleasure and pain. Fulfilling the promise we once made as children in those whispering ruins, and awakening a fate that will either anoint us or leave us in ashes…

My Review

After finishing book one in Sierra Simone’s Thornchapel series, I can honestly say I’m left with more questions than answer…more hypotheses than conclusions and with the added mystery and deep rooted secrets that seem to be contained not only in the walls and on the grounds of Thornchapel but in the characters’ own psyche and perhaps even repressed memories, I’m still stupefied by everything that transpired and what will continue to be one hell of a wild and unexpected journey.

While A Lesson in Thorns is told through Poe Markham’s perspective, the five other characters who play significant roles in the plot line are just as important, which means that readers have to pay careful attention to all of the details that are given about each person involved, potentially inferring as much as one can of what did and what might occur as this series continues.

Amongst the mystery and secrets that dominate the story, there’s a sense of sexual freedom involved as well. The environment that surrounds the characters is a place where one’s sexual nature can simply be what it is…without judgment or criticism, something that Sierra Simone’s stories are well known for, and that idea is expertly executed as it’s woven throughout the tale.

The two recurring thoughts/questions I had while reading A Lesson in Thorns is what exactly is the significance of Thornchapel and why does it seem to hold such power over those who have been on its grounds AND what are the true dynamics of the relationships among Auden, Poe, Saint, Rebecca, Delphine, and Becket and just how intertwined are they due to the past they share and the present that seems to indicate that some connections are stronger than others.

Even though there were sections of the story that I found a bit confusing and even a little slow, I’m definitely intrigued by this group of characters, which includes Thornchapel itself and I’m beyond ready to unravel more of this complex and interesting read.

My Review

J. Kenner’s Stark World is one setting that I’ll never get enough of due to its amazing stories and the couples who reside in this sensual, suspenseful, and seductive environment, and while Damian and Nikki will always be my favorite duo in the eclectic cast of characters involved in these multifaceted story lines, I love the fact that Kenner is introducing readers to the men and women who put their lives on the line as members of Stark’s newly assembled Security team – those who vow to protect and serve in any and all facets necessary.

Readers of Kenner’s S.I.N. Trilogy met Quincy Radcliffe as a member of Dallas’ Deliverance team, and it was clear that his skillset and training were an asset to his team at MI6, with his Deliverance teammates, and now as a pivotal member of Damien Stark’s Security.

But none of Quincy’s past experience or knowledge prepared him for Eliza Tucker and his desire and need to peel away her layers, claiming her as his own OR the fallout that would occur when a routine security detail turned into a life altering situation – one that left him nothing but ‘ragged edges and missing pieces’ and nowhere near worthy of a woman like Eliza.

The fact that Shattered With You is a second chance romance is what drew me into the story line and made me want to understand exactly what happened to Quincy to make him stay away from the one woman who gave him everything…who surrendered to him in ways that allowed her to let down her walls and fill the hole inside her that she always thought would remain open…who now feels nothing but betrayed and hurt by the only man she’s ever trusted.

Quincy and Eliza are brought back together in an extremely unusual way, and while it places them in a tenuous and dangerous situation, it also gives them, especially Eliza, the opportunity to put some of their fractured pieces together, feeling a bit more whole and perhaps even move forward without being completely shattered.

But because of the circumstances surrounding their reunion, the truth of Quincy’s actual profession, as well as Quincy’s inability to see beyond his tortured past, their once inseparable connection seems to be completely destroyed, only further confusing Eliza and desperately wanting to unravel the secrets that Quincy refuses to dispense.

Shattered With You is the perfect title for Quincy and Eliza’s story because it emphasizes just how much damage has been done to them at the hands of horrible people and consequently the actions taken by Quincy to keep Eliza away from his darkness and the monster within because she’s already been through enough and he won’t subject her to any more pain, even if that’s exactly what he did when he left her without even saying goodbye.

I can’t wait for Broken With You, especially after how book one ended, which means I’m sure readers are in for another great romantic suspense in the Stark Security series.
