The hot doctor beside Alice—better known to television audiences as the adorably charming Dr. Ethan Convey—bent over to check the patient’s chest drainage unit. “Chest tube output is twelve-hundred cc’s. Prep for thoracotomy.”

His hip bumped against Alice’s, and she shuffled aside to give him more room. They were working in tight quarters, and part of her job was to stay out of everyone else’s way. But as she reached for a scalpel on the tray of instruments beside her, she misjudged how close it was and knocked the whole thing over, sending hemostats, forceps, and scalpels flying with a deafening clatter.

“Ow!” the man dying on the gurney cried out as he flinched away from the flying medical equipment.

“Shit. Sorry,” Alice muttered. Good thing their scalpels weren’t actually sharp.

“Cut!”

The director ripped off his headset and approached with a thunderous expression on his face. It was Dean Harwell’s first time in the director’s chair on Las Vegas General, and the technical challenges of filming the show’s complicated trauma scenes had been giving him fits all week. Dean was moonlighting from his regular job as star of Las Vegas General’s better-rated lead-in, and had only ever directed two episodes of his own show before this. The producers had done him a favor letting him direct, but at this point it was clear to everyone that they’d made a grievous mistake. The guy was in way over his head, and had been taking it out on anyone and everyone with the misfortune to attract his attention.

Alice’s feet weren’t the only ones that shifted nervously as Dean stormed toward them. The other two nurses in the scene—a background actor named Diane and a minor recurring cast member named Abby—shrank back and hung their heads. Even Griffin Beach—who was in his seventh season as series regular Ethan Convey and had recently blown up the box office in the fourth installment of the blockbuster Troublemakers franchise—visibly winced. Only Alfie Crosby, a forty-year veteran of stage and screen sitting comfortably at the top of the call sheet seemed unfazed by the oncoming tantrum.

“Why is the dead guy talking?” Dean demanded, red-faced under his backward Yankees cap. “And moving?”

Once upon a time, Alice had actually thought Dean was hot, but that was before she’d had the pleasure of working with him. Funny how much less attractive some people became once you got to know them.

“He’s not dead yet,” Alfie said, looking more amused than anything. “There’s another page of dialogue before he codes.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alfie was being paid a cool half million per episode, so he could afford to be amused.

“She threw a tray of sharp instruments at my face,” the not-dead-yet actor mumbled in his own defense.

“Sorry,” Alice said again. In an entire season working background, this was the first time she’d ever ruined a take—but of course Dean didn’t know that.

“Background are supposed to be seen and not fucking heard!” he shouted. “It’s right there in the goddamn name: background!”

All the extras on his own show despised him. Alice had talked to some of them in the commissary last week, and they’d offered their condolences over Dean’s guest directing stint on LV Gen. Now she knew why.

Dean started to take a menacing step toward Alice, but Griffin Beach inserted himself between them. “It was my fault,” he said, facing down Dean with a level stare. “I bumped into her and made her knock the tray over. If you’re gonna be pissed at someone, be pissed at me.”

Alice could have hugged him for taking the bullet for her. Not that she ever would. There was a strict caste system in place on set. Extras who got too familiar with the talent would quickly find themselves out of a job and unlikely to be assigned a new one by the casting agency.

She hid gratefully behind Griffin’s broad shoulders and kept her mouth shut while Dean railed about professionalism and the fact that it was only eleven a.m. on Wednesday and they were already four hours and ten pages behind schedule. Someone might have pointed out that they were only behind because of Dean’s inexperience and repeated tantrums—this was his second outburst of the day and they were still hours away from lunch—but no one did, because it would only antagonize him and lengthen the duration of his tirade.

It was a full five minutes before he lost steam and stalked back to the monitors.

“Thank you,” Alice whispered to Griffin as soon as Dean was out of earshot.

Griffin gave her a wink so devastatingly sexy she felt her knees go wobbly. So much for not paying attention to how attractive he was.

“Don’t worry about that apple-faced goon,” he whispered back, covering the mic tucked under his shirt as he leaned toward her. “He’s not even qualified to be the assistant manager at PetSmart.”

Alice swallowed, momentarily paralyzed by the perfect storm of Griffin’s kindness and sexy proximity, combined with her own overwhelming gratitude and embarrassment.

“Boy, what a dickhead,” Alfie announced loudly, not caring who heard him. “Who told that moron he could direct?”

Griffin snorted and wandered back to his mark, leaving Alice to pull herself together and reapply her veneer of detached professionalism.

Props came through and reset the scene, Dean called action, and they started again from the top.

This time, Alice managed not to throw a tray of scalpels at anyone.

There are two sides to every story, so while Lucky gave her side of things in The Day I Stopped Falling For Jerks, allowing her podcast listeners and Max Monroe’s readers her perspective on all things jerk, including the biggest jerk of all time – Ollie Arsen – there are still more insights to be given…truths to be revealed…lies to be amended, and the only person who can offer that required information and hopefully by him offering up his heart and his soul to the public but more specifically to his Little Fire, he’ll get a second chance to do things right, and this time, not end up breaking Lucky’s heart as well as his own.

Book 2 is Ollie’s opportunity to ‘reset the truth’…to dig himself out of the hole he made for himself and acknowledge his extreme ineptness when it comes to relationships and feelings, and throughout the days and hours of his podcasts, the public receives a candid and honest Ollie – one who takes us back to when everything between him and Lucky started, providing another view to what we already know and giving us an opportunity to see the full picture of how they began and how and where everything between them imploded. Ollie takes us through the steps he took and the choices he made to get the girl, and while some of it highlights his less than stellar decisions and actions, it’s his honesty that keeps us rooting for him, hoping that Lucky takes the time to listen to his heartfelt words and figures out a way to reopen her heart to the man she loves.

Ollie’s perspective is candid, hilarious, and beyond entertaining. I love that he laughs at himself and has enough shame to feel bad about the lies he told and devious things he did in order to keep Lucky to himself even before he had her. Max Monroe’s crafts Ollie’s point of view using a conversational and easy-going tone, which makes it seem like we’re talking to one of our friends and listening to him unload the details of his mess up and what he plans to do to fix it, if that’s even possible.

After Ollie finally catches his listeners and readers up on all that has transpired to get him and Lucky where they are right now – further apart then they’ve ever been – there’s still more story to tell, which means that we need both his and Lucky’s viewpoint and the whirlwind of affairs that transpires to reach the ending of their tale is quite a production, but I wouldn’t expect anything less based on all that they have already endured in front of quite the captivated audience.

The Jerk Duet is a creative, humorous, and honest set of books, and I more than enjoyed both of them because of their writing, their character development, and their presentation method. And, there’s definitely a few supporting characters whose stories would be just as intriguing and entertaining as Lucky and Ollie’s story was.

Dating is easy, mates. The women are plentiful, the opportunities abundant, and the fun endless.

I’ve taken a woman night surfing—only to end up using the board and the motion of the water for another purpose—jetted over to New Zealand for a two-day holiday with another, and given more than one a fair tour of my bedroom.

No effort overspent, I enjoyed every moment of it.

I live hard and love harder, but it’s the second one that usually gets me in the most trouble. My affection tends to be short-lived—a quality I’ve been assured multiple times by the fairer sex isn’t becoming.

Basically, according to the greater population, I’m the ultimate jerk.

And if you grouped the lot of my past conquests together and set me ablaze, not one of them would piss on me to save my life.

Taking the next step, having a long-term relationship, has never been my forte.

Commitment is hard. The thought of a one-woman wank for the rest of my life has barely ever been conceivable, let alone possible, and I have to blame that for how badly it all went.

When I look back at my behavior, there has to be a reason.

A reason, friends, that when it came to Luciana Wright, I fucked it all up.

My Review

Princess Lenora Celeste Beatrice Arabella Pembrook…

Her name alone carries power…it carries ancestry…it carries significance.

It’s the name she was born with…the name that follows her royal bloodline…the name befitting of a ruler.

And, despite her age…her inexperience…her unworldliness, a queen she becomes and I can wholeheartedly say that Queen Lenora rises and she reigns.

Heading into Royally Yours, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’ve ADORED every book in Emma Chase’s Royally series, so my expectations as the series has progressed have exponentially grown and that’s because of Chase’s lyrical prose and her creation of a cast of royal characters who are bound to shake up their royal lineage more than a little bit.

So, while I’ll admit that Lenora and Edward’s story started a bit slow for me, the further into their story I got, especially when Edward returned home and made good on his promise, the more captivated I was by every part of Lenora and Edward’s unusual courting and the steps that Edward took to de-ice the young Queen, helping her to experience adventures that she never would have had without Edward’s assistance.

Despite the losses she faced and the second guessing she endured, Lenora was made to rule, and she more than proves that as she not only grows into her position but leads with grace, intelligence, and purpose. I never saw her as the bitter and cold ruler that she was perceived to be, and I’m sure that’s because I was privy to her internal thoughts and could see the woman beneath the crown and the veneer that she has worked diligently to wear and perfect. She was born and raised to lead and she more than proves herself, knowing exactly what needs to be done, why it needs to be done and how it needs to be done and woe to any member of Parliament or her Advising Council who questions her choices or her methods because Her Majesty is not one who to be trifled with, not only because she has a commanding presence but also because she has a man at her back and by her side to hold her up, even when others want her to fall.

I absolutely LOVED everything about Edward Langdon Richard Dorian Rourke, and while some may question him for leaving his home to go on his own adventures for over a decade, his time away and what he learned help to guide him in his new position and makes him the perfect partner for his Lenny. Once the decision was made, Edward took his new life seriously and did everything he could to prove himself and he more than achieves what he wanted to and then some. The care he takes with Lenora, both personally and professionally, will make readers melt and wish for their own Prince Edward.

Lenora and Edward’s story was perfectly paced…nothing about their relationship was rushed and as they learned everything there was to know about one another, they discovered just how perfectly matched they are and why they were born to be together as his Queen and her Prince.
