REVIEW: WHITE KNIGHT by Meghan March

About White Knight

New York Times bestselling author Meghan March continues the story of untold truths and one man’s redemption in the Dirty Mafia Duet.

I never expected to be anyone’s white knight. That’s not a role I’ve ever played.

But when the Casso crime family shifts into uncharted territory, they’re looking for a new hero, and they’re looking for me—Cannon Freeman, the black sheep.

But my time in disgrace is at an end.

It’s my turn to rise up and save the people who matter most to me.

Even if my family has never given a damn about me, I will not let them fall.

More than anything, I will not let her fall.

One thing I know is true—in my life, nothing is ever what it seems.

My Review

At the end of Black Sheep, it seemed that the shit had finally hit the proverbial fan, forcing Drew to come clean about who she is and what she came to Cannon for…I wasn’t quite sure how things would play out between them once Cannon learned the truth, but the way that March brings all of the information to the forefront and has Drew and Cannon work together along with a few unlikely allies changed my perspective on quite a few characters and also left me feeling quite a bit awestruck with how March unraveled everything about Drew’s father’s murder, Dom Casso’s true feelings about his children and other important players in his organization as well as the person who brought most of the truth of things into the light.

The idea Drew always wearing a facade or taking on a persona resonates in her words and her actions as well as the way she hides her true face and eyes from everyone, even herself. It definitely takes a while for Drew to come into her own, but with Cannon by her side, helping her to find a truth she’s dedicated every part of herself to, losing bits of herself along the way, but thankfully, Cannon truly sees her for who she is and he’s more than determined that she be who she was always meant to be with him and with everyone they hold dear.

I loved watching Cannon figure out that he’s always been his own man and that he could never become like his father because his mother’s love and faith in him guide his words and actions, even if they’re in a setting that his father runs. Cannon definitely had a dark edge to him, but he’s far more grounded than he gives himself credit for and the fact that those around him finally take notice and work to mend broken relationships as well as make amends for how certain things play out proves that Cannon doesn’t have to try to step into his father’s shoes…he just has to worry about maintaining his own and fulfilling the life that his mother always wanted for him.

The complicated dynamics of Cannon and his half-siblings is one that truly illustrates Dom’s control and his refusal to not dictate every aspect of his children’s lives, especially Cannon’s, and while the others have found their way out of the fold on their own terms and with their own lives, what Dom has done to Cannon’s relationship with Creighton and his second rate classification when it comes to how Dom sees Cannon and his position in the family left me ragey, but I will say that how things play out toward the end of White Knight made me want to reassess, albeit only a little bit, how I viewed Dom and his words and actions throughout the duet.

Meghan March continues to bring stories with heat, conflict, and suspense, illustrating the world in which her characters live to be one wrought with danger, darkness, secrets, and revelations that not only upend everything the hero and heroine once thought but also put their lives in jeopardy as they work toward an amicable resolution.

White Knight is absolutely the ending I wanted for Cannon and Drew; it was every bit the twisty, suspenseful, and revealing resolution fitting for Danger and his girl.

My Review

For Elira Berisha, resistance is futile when it comes to her feelings for Nico Shihu, partly because she has always seen him as her savior…her protector because he came through for her when she needed him the most and partly because the connection they shared when she was a child has now turned into something so much bigger…something neither of them are capable of fighting despite the dangerous world Nico resides in and the fact that she already fled one volatile environment and doesn’t want to be subjected to another one.

The Nico Elira knew in their shared past is most certainly not the same one she meets in New York. This version of Nico is dark, dangerous, and deadly. He commands respect from those around him and the power he wields as a Mafia boss is something that both frightens and excites her, leaving her overwhelmed with who Nico has become and trying to consolidate the new Nico with the one who meant everything to her.

The title of Jessica Ruben’s new series is Sex. Rock. Mafia. And while each one of those alone carries significant meaning and emotional reactions, tying all three tougher, especially the way Ruben does, illustrates the risks and the rewards that come with being a part of Nico’s life as well as the repercussions of Elira giving her heart to a young man all those years ago to place it right back into the hands of a demanding and dangerous alpha male who continues to be the one she wants but with him comes the darkness he rules, meaning that their lives will be anything but ordinary.

Light My Fire is quite a meaningful title for Elira and Nico’s story. Fire both destroys and restores, flushing out or igniting the light that can be both kept aflame or extinguished. Nico protected Elira’s fire all those years ago, helping her to stay alive and build a new life and now that they’re in each other’s lives ago, they both want to build something anew and together, but the power Nico wields comes with its problems and enemies, so trying to combat the darker side of his lifestyle with all the light that Elira can bring to it is a delicate balance and one that will be twisted up with danger and devastation, but these two will walk that line and find a way to stay into the light because they believe that fate has a lifetime together in store for them and that’s what keeps them moving forward even when everything around them goes to hell.

4.5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

“It’s your brother,” he says matter-of-factly. “But you probably knew that already.”

My stomach drops. Agron.

“It seems he’s been stealing from some of my associates.” His voice is completely devoid of any feeling. “He was dealing for them and keeping a little bit of product for himself. Sometimes, he used it; other times, he sold it. But after a while, people began to notice. He ran to the Shqipe for help.”

I want to blink, but I cannot move.

“I gave him the money to pay those debts. And now, I’m the one he owes. I figured I could use him to do some small-time work, get my money back that way.” He takes a sip of his wine, completely unfazed. “And then I hear, Agron wants a firm spot in my world. Gave one of my men a whole story that the Mafia Shqiptare is where he’s meant to be.

“As we both know, your brother has always been a loose cannon. Arguably, untrustworthy. I knew him when he was a kid, but I’m a firm believer that people don’t change.” He stops speaking, continuing to dig into his food.

Meanwhile, I’m worried mine is going to come back up. Hearing this about my brother isn’t a surprise, but it’s painful nonetheless.

I take another sip of my wine, hoping it will calm me or at least give the illusion I’m relaxed. Unfortunately, my hand trembles, and the glass shakes, giving me away. Nico notices, of course.

He clears his throat, putting his fork down. “There is something I need from you. And if you give me what I want, I’ll protect your brother from the other gangs by giving him a spot in the Shqipe. You do not have to agree to the arrangement. But if you do, there is no end to it until I decide it’s over.” He settles into a forward-lean position, big arms resting on the glass table and shirtsleeves pulled up to the center of his strong, corded forearms. Everything about him, from his body language to his words, spells dominance.

I open and then shut my mouth.

Nico looks me up and down, his gaze stormy and hot.

Is Nico going to ask me for sex? It wouldn’t be unheard of in these crazy circles. But I have a limit, and whoring myself out for the sake of my brother is a no-go. No. Impossible. Never.

“What I need is simple,” he continues casually, the look in his eyes extinguished. “There is a new family I’m aiming to do business with. They’re the type who like to work with men who are … settled down. I know how loyal you are to your word. We share a language and customs. You will act as my wife when I request it.”

“I have school.” I lick my lips. I can’t let go of my future. Not for Agron and not for anyone. I won’t!

“You can go back for your studies”—he nods—“finish your degree. But when I call, you must come.”

“This arrangement,” I start, pointing between himself and me, “it’s just for public purposes, r-right? Nothing private you’re expecting or illegal?” I can’t help my stutter. I want to stay strong in the face of all of this, but it’s getting difficult.

Nico looks over my shoulder, and I turn my head, finding no one behind me. When I refocus on him, he’s fuming. He knows what I’m insinuating.

He grits his teeth. “You aren’t my whore, Elira. And I’m not going to ask you to do my dirty work either.” His eyes are hard.

Is he offended?

“Take my proposal at face value.” He finishes his drink. His huge hand places the delicate crystal glass on the table. “There is no hidden agenda. You pretend to be my wife, come when I call you, and act as I expect, and in return, I will bring your brother into my fold, making sure that no outsider kills him. If you walk away, he’s on his own.”

“He wants to work for you. He will do a good job for you.” I swallow hard.

He cocks his head to the side, like he’s calling bullshit. “Agron’s best asset is that he is related to you.”

I shift, but the weight of my body feels like it’s doubled. “And if he’s within the Shqipe, the other groups won’t be able to touch him?”

“That’s right.”

Quiet descends upon our discussion, but my mind shrieks. The skeptical part of me is on questioning overdrive. “What kind of events would be required of me?”

He takes another bite of food. “We’d travel. Dinners. Things like that.”

I wait to hear more, things along the lines of dungeons and sex slave, but thankfully, it doesn’t come. “So, all I have to do is pretend we’re married?”

He nods. “Yes. Exactly.”

“But what about when this business thing you need me for is complete? What will happen to Agron then?”

His lips quirk up. “You’re very loyal, Elira.”

“He’s my brother.” What else can I say? I want and need Agron to stay safe and alive. This is clearly his best shot.

“We’ll cross that bridge when it comes. I would take this offer then if you are so keen on making sure he stays out of trouble.”

“You’ll swear to that?”

“My oath is my bond.”

I know he’s telling the truth. For people like us, honor is everything.

I wait for him to elaborate some more, but he doesn’t. Surprisingly, I feel my nose twitch. I was expecting him to mention something, anything, about before. About what we had. But he doesn’t. And I’m not about to either. I just want to get the hell out of here. I want to go back in time and tell myself not to have that damn cigarette. I wish I’d flagged Jack down when he was circled by those girls and claimed him for myself. Instead, I made one fucking choice, and now, here I am, in front of Nico, my life on crazy ground.

“It’s late.” Nico shifts in his chair. “You’ll stay tonight and think. Tomorrow morning, give me your answer. Regardless of what you choose, I’ll have my car bring you back to school.” He stands up, twisting the fancy gold watch around his wrist. “When you’re finished eating, Maria will bring you back to your room.”

“I want to leave tonight.” Some of my bravado from before is gone. Beneath the strong girl is plain me—a college kid from Tobeho. Here is the last place I want to stay.

“Until I have your answer, you aren’t allowed to take one step out of my sight.” He stands up to his full menacing height, and in this moment, he truly scares me. He doesn’t give a shit about what we had—that much is clear.

I force myself upright, refusing to cower.

Seemingly satisfied, he walks away.

“What an asshole,” I curse under my breath.

He snaps, “What did you call me?” His stubborn jaw gives him a stony expression.

My stomach drops to my knees.

“Something to remember.” He saunters back to where I sit. “I will not be seen with a woman who doesn’t look polished or well-raised. I know who you are and where you come from. Act like the woman you ought to be or forget the deal.” And with those final cutting words, he’s gone.

RELEASE: Sinners Are Winners by Lani Lynn Vale

SINNERS ARE WINNERS

KPD Motorcycle Patrol #5

By Lani Lynn Vale

Release Date: October 8th

He saw her from across a crowded ballpark and knew she was about to change his life.

Yes, he realizes just how cliché that really is, but the moment his eyes locked on her, he knew that she was the one.

At least, the one that royally screwed him over. The one responsible for his demotion and the subsequent disciplinary action taken against him before he’d even gotten out of the probationary period with Kilgore Police Department.

It all started with a kiss.

***

Saylor Rae Spada tried to mind her business. She also tried to not get involved in petty disputes.

However, from the moment she saw him sitting next to her at a professional baseball game, a game she didn’t even want to be at but was dragged to by her blind date, she couldn’t look away.

Then the kiss cam came on, featuring none other than her and the handsome stranger.

Without missing a beat, he kissed her.

Then her blind date decided to pull a knife and try to stab him.

From that point forward, she’s done nothing but cause him trouble.

Trouble that he’s starting to find increasingly adorable.

My Review

Lani Lynn Vale’s female leads are some of my absolute favorite heroines because they are as temperamental, stubborn, and tell it like it is as they can get, which means that their families as well as their friends and most definitely the men in their lives are probably going to be exposed to a whole lot of recklessness, chaos, and sass in copious amounts, but that’s what makes these leading ladies everything their heroes want and need, even if they don’t know it a first…

Saylor is definitely up at the top of my list of favorite Vale’s heroines, and I think it’s because she embraces her uniqueness and stays true to who she is regardless of what others want her to be. I’m all about sarcastic and intelligent characters and Saylor illustrates her witty ways on several occasions throughout the story.

Lock is all kinds of alpha male goodness and while his first interaction with Saylor gets him in a whole lot of trouble, professionally and then personally because he can get her off of his mind, it’s clear from the onset that whatever is building just beneath the surface between these two deserves a chance, especially when Lock finds out just how connected they are and figures out that Saylor’s irresistible curves, confectionary creations, and a mouth that doesn’t stop pulling him further into everything that she is and everything they can be together.

Winners Are Sinners is a great addition to Vale’s KPD Motorcycle Patrol series. I love the family feel of it and the fact that readers get to catch up with some favorites of past books makes everything that much better.

Synopsis

A brand-new standalone novel in the New York Times bestselling Briar U series!

What I learned after last year’s distractions cost my hockey team our entire season? No more screwing up. No more screwing, period. As the new team captain, I need a new philosophy: hockey and school now, women later. Which means that I, Hunter Davenport, am officially going celibate…no matter how hard that makes things.

But there’s nothing in the rulebook that says I can’t be friends with a woman. And I won’t lie—my new classmate Demi Davis is one cool chick. Her smart mouth is hot as hell, and so is the rest of her, but the fact that she’s got a boyfriend eliminates the temptation to touch her.

Except three months into our friendship, Demi is single and looking for a rebound.

And she’s making a play for me.

Avoiding her is impossible. We’re paired up on a yearlong school project, but I’m confident I can resist her. We’d never work, anyway. Our backgrounds are too different, our goals aren’t aligned, and her parents hate my guts.

Hooking up is a very bad idea. Now I just have to convince my body—and my heart.

My Review

Just like in Raven and Maddoc’s previous two books, Reign of Brayshaw is a journey of highs and lows, of expected and unexpected situations, of revelations and concealments, and as everything plays out amidst the pages of book three, the tension is palpable, the pressure is overwhelming, and an ending where Raven and her Brayshaw boys remain intact and stronger than ever is not guaranteed, but they’ll sure as hell fight for it because the bond shared by these four characters is not something they’re willing to give up, regardless of what they must endure.

Raven is, without a doubt, one of the most transformative and multifaceted heroines I have read in quite some time, and the fact that she is only 18 years old and has lived most of her life on her own, coping with the ways life and those around her have let her down is a bit mind boggling. Raven’s growth doesn’t happen all at once; in fact, sometimes, it doesn’t even move in the right direction, but that makes sense given how independent and stubborn Raven is and remains, meaning that she’ll have to learn to trust in the three guys who refuse to let her go regardless of the shitstorm that seems to always surround them. The saying that explains ‘she may be little but she’s fierce’ aptly applies to this Bray Queen and being able to witness her growing pains but more importantly her victories is essential to truly understanding just how much she has changed from the beginning to the series to the end of book three.

Raven and Maddoc’s changing and growing relationship is the crux of their story; these two challenge each other, demand one another to be open and honest, fight to be respected, to be loved, to be number one in their hearts and their souls. And no matter how volatile, overwhelming, or demanding their connection is, it’s one that will transcend every single problem and/or obstacle because they’re more than just enemies turned lovers…they’re family…they’re soulmates and that idea was illustrated brilliantly from the start.

Expect the unexpected…I learned that early on in this series, and it holds true in Raven and Maddoc’s final book. And even when Reign of Brayshaw ends, there are still issues that need to be hashed out and resolved and what that means for this band of brothers and their queen is not as straightforward as some would think because the world in which they leave still has adversaries out to get them, but as long as they stand together, they can overcome and achieve anything.

Like Boys of Brayshaw and Trouble at Brayshaw High, Cap and Royce are secondary characters who are instrumental in ensuring that everyone knows where Raven belongs, even Raven herself. These two are absolutely heroes in their own right – ones who still have a lot to work through, and I can’t wait to read their stories!

SNEAK PEEK: THE KINGMAKER by Kennedy Ryan

KINGMAKER SNEAK PEEK.jpg

“A dazzling, thought-provoking, layered romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. A round of applause for one of the best books of 2019.”

— L.J. Shen, USA Today bestselling author

All The King’s Men Duet, an all-new powerful and emotional duet from RITA ® Award winning author Kennedy Ryan, is coming October 28th

KINGMAKER_FINAL.jpg

Power. Passion. Betrayal.

RITA® Award-winning author Kennedy Ryan delivers the epic first installment of the All the King’s Men Duet.

Raised to rule, bred to lead and weaned on a diet of ruthless ambition. In a world of haves and have nots, my family has it all, and I want nothing to do with it.

My path takes me far from home and paints me as the black sheep. At odds with my father, I’m determined to build my own empire. I have rules, but Lennix Hunter is the exception to every one of them. From the moment we meet, something sparks between us. But my family stole from hers and my father is the man she hates most. I lied to have her, and would do anything to keep her. Though she tries to hate me, too, the inexorable pull between us will not be denied.

And neither will I.

Sneak Peek from The Kingmaker

A fat raindrop plops on my nose, sliding down the bridge, followed by another and then a wet succession.

“Aw, hell.” I pull my jacket up on my elbows to provide some shelter for the two of us, but the rain trebles, more coming down and faster.

“We still have four blocks before my place,” I say. “Sorry, but the weather is unpredictable this time of year.”

Rain has already started molding the thin dress to her body, faithfully hugging every swell and curve. A hard shiver runs through her and her teeth chatter.

“Come on.” I grab her hand and duck into an alleyway. An overhang provides a tiny patch of dry ground and shelter. “We may be able to wait it out. These showers sprout up and pass over like they never happened.”

We’re sandwiched between two buildings and there is barely any light, but the moonlight finds her, sculpting shadows beneath her cheekbones and etching dark crescents of her lowered lashes. The rain has smeared her mascara, and water-slicked hair flattens to her head. She should look bedraggled, but she manages to be the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.

I bend, tentative at first, even after last night. Even after making love to her again this morning when I chased her up the stairs. I approach slowly, giving her the chance to refuse, but she doesn’t. She meets me, eyes open, lips eager, hands bunched in my wet hair. It’s a freshwater kiss, made of rain and passion.

Synopsis

“Girls like you aren’t exactly welcomed at a place like this, so keep your head down and look the other way.”

Those were the exact words of my social worker when she dropped me in my newest hellhole, a place for “troubled teens”.

I didn’t listen, and now I’m on their radar.

They expect me to play along in their games of hierarchy, to fall in line in the social order they’ve deemed me fit.

Too bad for them, I don’t follow rules.

Too bad for me, they’re determined to make sure I do.

Inconceivably attractive and treated like kings…these are the boys of Brayshaw High.

And I’m the girl who got in their way.
