REVIEW AND EXCERPT TOUR: DESIRED by Kelly Elliott

I thought all I wanted in my life was to succeed at football and one day take over my grandfather’s ranch. Nothing else mattered but those two things.

Why suddenly did she appear every single night in my dreams? The faceless woman who had me waking up each morning soaked in sweat with my heart nearly pounding right out of my chest.

Who was she?

Where was she?

And why was she the one thing I desired more than anything?

Review

Desired is about the men of the Wanted series…it’s about who they were before they met and fell in love with the women who were meant to be theirs…it’s a look into the type of men they chose to be and then the ones they couldn’t help but be when they met the love of their lives…

It’s a prequel to the Kelly Elliott series that started it all for me, and it’s beyond interesting to see the type of guys Gunner, Josh, and Jeff were before they realized the path they were meant to journey with the one woman who they couldn’t live without regardless of the struggle it took to get there.

It definitely didn’t surprise me that Gunner was always the southern gentleman…there’s just something about the way that Elliott characterizes Gunner that screams swoonworthy charmer, and Josh was the quintessential player until he was knocked on his ass by a certain sassy seductress, and then there’s Jeff – the one who had things a bit more difficult because he didn’t know how to not be in love with his best friend’s sister but he also didn’t know what to do about that fact because there was too much on the line.

Being allowed inside these three complex heroes provides readers with a perspective that we never would have gotten had Desired not been written because to see how far these three men have come based on the pasts that were described in book 6 of the series illustrates their then and now selves and getting their stories from their own point of view doesn’t sugarcoat anything…it’s real…it’s interesting and it’s a part of these three men that clearly guided their way and perhaps even allowed them to truly understand what they wanted/needed after they were done with the kind of lives they were leading and where that ‘more’ they needed would come from if they had anything to say about it.

The younger Gunner, Josh, and Jeff are an interesting bunch, and I loved getting to know these past versions of three alpha cowboys who are beyond sexy and sweet.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

The front door immediately opened, and four girls trickled out. I tried like hell to get a better look at them all.

“Stay here,” Jeff ordered us.

Once the door shut, Josh let out a laugh. “Is it just me, or does Jeff seem like he’s lost his damn mind?”

“Not just you,” Brad stated.

I watched as one of the girls moved closer to Jeff. Her brown hair was piled on top of her head, and her back was toward us.

“I can’t get a good look at her, damn it,” I whispered.

“Me either,” Brad stated.

Josh practically crawled into the front seat. “Do you think that’s the sister?”

“Maybe.”

Another girl walked up and got between Jeff and the girl who might be Ellie. It looked like she had brown hair as well. She looked pretty from what I could tell.

“Shoot me right now. That girl has a fucking hot body,” Josh said.

“You better hope that is a friend of the sister’s and not Ellie herself,” I said with a laugh. “But you’re right. She does have a nice body. So does the one with her back to us.”

I knew that was Ellie. I couldn’t explain how I knew; I simply did. My chest was pounding with the idea of her walking up to the truck and Jeff finally introducing her to us.

“Yeah, so does the blonde,” Brad added. “Can’t really see the other one; Jeff’s blocking her.”

“She has red hair, and trust me, she’s rocking a hot body as well and is pretty as fuck,” Josh stated as he leaned farther up into the front seat. “Why do I feel like I’ve seen her before?”

“Dude, why don’t you just fucking crawl up here already?” I snapped.

“Why didn’t girls look like this when we were in high school?” Brad asked with a sigh.

All three of us laughed as a porch light turned on, lighting it up for us to get a good look at all the girls.

The girl who had her back to us, who I was guessing was Ellie, turned and looked at the truck.

She was beautiful. My heart felt like it dropped to my stomach.

Josh gasped. The fucker actually gasped. “Holy. Shit. No wonder the bastard has been keeping her away from us. She is hot as hell.”

“That she is,” Brad agreed.

My eyes strained to take her all in. I could see her, could tell she was absolutely stunning, but I needed to see her better. Study her face so I could remember it.

Jeff pulled her into his arms and kissed her on the forehead. They took a few steps closer to the truck, and Jeff pointed. He leaned down and said something to her, making her look directly back at the truck again and smile.

My breath caught in my throat. She was stunning. I wondered what she looked like with the sun shining down on that pretty face of hers.

Ellie lifted her hand and waved toward us.

“I’m getting out!” Josh said, trying to scramble into the driver’s seat. I stopped him and pushed his ass back, forcing him to land next to Brad, who was laughing his head off.

I pointed to Josh. “Dude, he told us not to get out. Unless you want to get your ass beat, I suggest you stay in the truck.”

Crossing his arms, Josh looked away.

“Are you pouting?” Brad asked. “You’re freaking pouting. You pansy-ass!”

I couldn’t help but smile before turning back around and looking at Jeff and Ellie. As they moved a bit closer, Jeff stopped and turned to his sister. Her gaze went back to the truck, and it felt like I was having a déjà vu. A chill ran up and down my spine, and I couldn’t shake the feeling I’d seen Ellie somewhere else.

18-year-old Ellie Johnson always believed she would never be loved or wanted by anyone. She focused all of her attention on her grades and getting into the University of Texas to start a new life away from her mother.

The last thing Ellie expected was to fall in love with Gunner Mathews, a starting linebacker for the University of Texas football team and not to mention, her brother’s best friend.

Gunner only has two passions in life, football and his grandfather’s ranch, until he falls for his best friends little sister. He will stop at nothing to show Ellie how much he wants her, even if it means he has to move faster than she would like.

Gunner knows they are meant to be together forever, but Ellie keeps denying her feelings out of fear of being hurt again. Every time he gets close to winning her love, something pushes her away again. Will Ellie ever be able to let go of the past and let him into her heart, and will Gunner be patient enough to wait for her?

This is a new release of an edition originally published by K. Elliott Enterprises, INC.

First, hate. Then, want. But in the end? Heartbreak.

My celebrity life was supposed to be easy, and this movie was the biggest break of my career. But from the moment Officer Levi Fox gave me a speeding ticket on my way into town, he’s been nothing but a thorn in my side.

Dominant. Cocky. Callous.

Midnight blue eyes, a bad attitude, and muscles for days, he’s exactly the kind of man I should avoid.

But as the Cold, Montana Police Department’s official movie liaison, he’s taken up a permanent place in my life that I can’t shake.

We fight. A lot.

Then, we kiss—and my carefully crafted hate toward him no longer feels so much like hate.

I’m falling

falling

falling.

But how often do alpha-jerks cushion the landing?

Note: Levi and Ivy’s story will continue in Book Two—Cold.

Review

I’ve always felt that if an author has the ability to diversify his/her writing style, trope, genre, etc., still embodying what s/he is known for but also enticing old/new readers with a new perspective, a new storyline and/or a new layer of writing that illustrates other aspects of his/her writing prowess that that was a true measure of an incredible writer, and with Max Monroe’s newest release, STONE, they’ve wholeheartedly proven my assessment, allowing readers to see a whole different side to the comedic duo – a more dramatic side, and it’s one that I can’t get enough of, especially with where they left readers at the end of book one in Ivy Stone and Levi Fox’s story.

I enjoyed everything about Cold, Montana: its townspeople, its history, and the small town togetherness, and while that may seem a bit odd given the fact that the setting is where a serial killer took the lives of several young women, the way that Max Monroe tells the story of those tragic events, providing real-life insights as well as an outlet for the story to be told in typical Hollywood fashion makes it extremely intriguing.

But there’s definitely one member of Cold, Montana, who wants nothing to do with the Cold-Hearted Killer film, partly because Levi Fox’s past is completely wrapped up in what happened six years ago, and while he may somewhat understand why Grace Murphy’s family wants her story to be told, he still hasn’t worked through everything that occurred back then, and while it’s clear who killed Grace and why, there are details that Levi doesn’t want revealed…ones view people are privy to, and what he especially doesn’t want is to feel any kind of connection to the ‘entitled actress’ chosen to play Grace in the movie, even if he’s drawn to Ivy Stone and feels things for her he refuses to acknowledge.

Ivy Stone is not the woman Levi thinks or perhaps needs her to be, which is why after their less than stellar introduction to each other, it’s clear that the way they affect one another is both nerve wracking and unexplainable; their outward actions towards each other, especially on Levi’s end, are volatile and problematic, even if there’s something below the surface that proves just how much neither of them dislike the other regardless of what they say and how they act.

It’s the fact that Ivy and Levi affect one another so much that makes Levi act out because he’s spent the past six years going through the motions, doing everything he can to feel numb because he still hasn’t figured out how to let go of Grace and the events that ended her life.

But that’s where Max Monroe makes things even more intriguing – there are truths about Levi’s relationship with Grace that no one knows about and while the producers of the film take some poetic license when it comes to the events that happened in Cold, Montana, they are more insightful than they know, which complicates Levi’s life because as the police’s official movie liaison, he has no choice but to sit by and watch his life played out on film, reliving the darker moments of his life and forcing him to confront, not only the reality of his feelings for Grace but the real effect Ivy has on him, and while he’s done everything he can to sabotage any connection between him and Ivy, by the time book one ends, it’s clear that Levi needs to reevaluate what he wants and what needs from himself, from the Cold community, and from the beautiful redhead he can’t seem to forget.

I’m so glad that Max Monroe ventured into new book territory. The whole storyline is well thought out and it’s laid out in a way that takes readers through the complicated and layered lives of the main characters as well as providing their honest perspectives despite how they outwardly represent their feelings for one another. The secondary characters also play pivotal roles in not only Levi and Ivy’s ‘non-relationship’ but in offering an outsider’s look into the tragedy as well as a different outlook on the movie and what it will do, not only for their town but also for Grace’s memory.

I definitely NEED book two, Cold, ASAP because with what transpires at the end of STONE, it’s not only the Montana weather that needs to be unthawed!

Review

What’s a billionaire to do when he finds himself as the face of a contest he has no knowledge of – one that puts him face-to-face with the one woman he couldn’t get in his bed??? Trade favors with said woman, of course, but in typical romance story fashion, it’s clear from their first intimate exchange that one night will not pacify the connection between them, but what that means for the popular billionaire and the sassy vixen who needs to remain under the radar is something readers will have to find out in the newest Man of the Month release, In Your Eyes.

Readers familiar with the series will remember Megan from Reece and Jenna’s story, which might not sit too well with them knowing what happened between Megan and Reece, but it’s clear that they have all moved on and Parker and Megan have something worth exploring, but that’s only if Megan can let go of her fears and insecurities and trust in a man who wants for nothing in life, except the woman he’s treated differently than any other woman he’s been with from the start.

Mr. June is a rather interesting choice…given Parker’s billionaire status and the fact that he could easily write a check to put the Fix on Sixth back in the black, but that’s not how it works for the bar’s owners, so he gladly goes along with what Megan put has already put in motion because it gets him the woman who sees him as a man not the status of his bank account.

I love how the bar brings all walks of life to its doorstep and also becomes a mecca for couples to finally get together and get things right. In Your Eyes is the shortest of any of the other five books, but I think that’s because Parker is as straightforward as they come, so his upfront agenda is laid out for Megan and then it’s up to her if there’s anything worth pursuing after their one night together and based on the chemistry that ignites between, Parker refuses to allow the woman of his dreams to get away, so I guess it’s a good thing that he’s all in, in being a part of the calendar that’s being created to save the Fix on Sixth.

Once again, J. Kenner brings a couple together who find a common ground and then explore the possibility of what they could be, and while the story lines may be a bit predictable, it’s a sweet, sassy, and steamy escape for a few hours;)

RELEASE REVIEW: MURDER NOTES by Lisa Renee Jones

Title: Murder Notes
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Series: Lilah Love #1
Release Date: March 27, 2018
New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones’s heart-pounding thriller of a woman’s secrets—and a past that’s about to come out of hiding…
As an FBI profiler, it’s Lilah Love’s job to think like a killer. And she is very good at her job. When a series of murders surface—the victims all stripped naked and shot in the head—Lilah’s instincts tell her it’s the work of an assassin, not a serial killer. But when the case takes her back to her hometown in the Hamptons and a mysterious but unmistakable connection to her own life, all her assumptions are shaken to the core.
Thrust into a troubled past she’s tried to shut the door on, Lilah’s back in the town where her father is mayor, her brother is police chief, and she has an intimate history with the local crime lord’s son, Kane Mendez. The two share a devastating secret, and only Kane understands Lilah’s own darkest impulses. As more corpses surface, so does a series of anonymous notes to Lilah, threatening to expose her. Is the killer someone in her own circle? And is she the next target?

Review

I’m a huge fan of suspenseful thrillers, especially ones where readers see the case and all of its complicated parts through the eyes of one of the agents responsible for bringing the criminal to justice, so when I read that Lisa Renee Jones’ newest release, MURDER NOTES, was about an FBI Profiler on the hunt for a serial killer, I knew this was a story I would love; these kinds of books keep readers actively engaged because as clues are uncovered and potential criminals/killers are interviewed, we take notes on each new character, each piece of information uncovered, each lie told, and each truth revealed.

Right from the start, Lisa Renee Jones thrusts readers into the middle of a case that is so complex and so layered that it’s, at times, difficult for the heroine, FBI Profiler, Lilah Love, to keep everything straight, but that’s expected for a case of this magnitude and the varying scenarios that exist. And then, when the leads and the information start to direct Lilah towards an extremely familiar area, the things that added up before, don’t quite back sense anymore and she’s left reeling due to the potential of what it all could mean in direct relation to her own life.

I do have to caution romance readers, a bit, because MURDER NOTES does NOT focus on the heroine’s love life or the potential for one…don’t get me wrong, there are traces of romance in the story line, but the plot is not driven by love…it’s driven by murder…by the need to catch this serial killer and/or the man who hired this assassin/killer. And I have to say as a lover of romance, this story is perfect the way it is. I wouldn’t want its focus to be swayed from what’s most important and because Lilah Love is in the thick of it, she doesn’t really have time for anything else. She’s consumed by the case…by the details they’ve acquired so far…by the real possibility that it’s someone closer to her than she thinks.

Lilah Love is a kickass heroine who understands the gravity of her profession, especially now that it seems like her personal and professional lives have begun to crash into each other. I definitely would portray Lilah as an alpha woman, and while that title could be construed as a negative quality – Lilah owns her strength, her feistiness, and her intelligence, which makes her the perfect woman to bring down this killer.

Lisa Renee Jones did a great job in providing readers with a solid foundation in regards to the case and who Lilah Love is, and while MURDER NOTES does end in a cliffhanger, I feel like it’s the perfect stopping point to build up the suspense and the intrigue surrounding the case and the fact that all evidence points to Love’s hometown being part of the puzzle. I also have to say that I’m rather fascinated by Kane Mendez and the secret that only he knows about Lilah. I’m hoping that book two provides readers with further insight into what these two had together and how they might potentially fit into the dynamics of the case.

It was hate at first sight……

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user…and an addict.

He was out of control and didn’t bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire.

I was infatuated with her, but that didn’t stop me from acting like she didn’t exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold onto it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

Review

I lost my heart a long time ago to Jay Crownover’s bent but not broken bad boys, and while Rule will always be my favorite because he’s the one who introduced me to the awesomeness that is Crownover’s stories and characters, each one of her fractured alpha males finds his way into my head, into my heart, and even sometimes, into my soul, and for all his jacked up issues and addictive tendencies, Cable James McCaffrey found a way to make me understand him, want better for him, and be proud of him for all that he worked through as his and Affton’s story pushed them both to their limits and left readers amazed at just how strong both Cable and Affton were as they journeyed through Cable’s addictions and vices as well as the contradictory and overwhelming feelings that consume them when it comes to each other and what they seemingly want and need regardless of their thoughts and spoken words to the contrary.

I have to say that it was a dark, bitter, and lonely time when Crownover allowed readers inside Cable’s head, especially at the beginning of Recovered. He had so much self-loathing and misplaced anger as well as addictions that consumed every facet of his psyche and his body. It was extremely difficult to be forced to witness his downward spiral and not be able to do anything for him. Cable’s last name absolutely allowed him to get away with an horrendous amount of illegal activities, but I don’t think Cable really cared about getting caught; in some ways, I think he was acting out so abdominally to see if anyone would call him out and the fact that no one did, except a girl from his school who barely talked to him spoke volumes when it came to who he had to help him fight his addictions.

What’s also interesting is the fact that Cable would probably be the first to admit that he was and perhaps even still is a user but not for the reasons some might expect. His destructive choices continually numbed his emotions, helping him to escape the maelstrom of feelings and consent badgering that never seemed to be fully silent inside his head. Cable truly didn’t care what the drugs did to him because the freedom he felt while being on them is what kept him from having to deal with a barrage of complicated and contradictory emotions that no one else would understand.

Affton is an incredibly complex character, partly because her past is what guides every aspect of her present and partly because it’s rather difficult to understand some of the choices she makes, not only when it comes to Cable, but to herself as well. In Affton’s experience, addiction never loses; it always brought those in its clenches down to their lowest point, refusing to surrender them, so if she focuses on that idea, she shouldn’t care…she shouldn’t be angry at Cable for destroying his life with addiction…she shouldn’t want him to get help…she should have seen Cable as a lost cause and moved on. But for some reason, Affton couldn’t, and even after she’s forced into being Cable’s sobriety companion, for lack of a better term, her feelings towards Cable lead to complications that she doesn’t want or can handle because they put her right back into a situation that has the ability to overwhelm her again…to fight against and for someone who would much rather give into their addiction than fight it.

Affton doesn’t, truly, allow anyone past the walls that she has built around her heart because the love she had for her mother scarred her in life-changing ways – ones that for most of the story, I don’t see her getting past, and I can’t say that I blame her. What Affton experienced with her mother is not something that anyone should have to endure, especially at such a young age, so the fact that she holds steadfast to her mission…to her goals…to her future makes sense but because she didn’t factor in just how much Cable would get under her skin and compel her to do things she never would have done without his influence and her feelings for him, she finds herself on a path she never wanted to be on and now it’s one that she doesn’t know how or if she wants to find a way off.

Recovered is a rather interesting title for Cable and Affton’s story. For one, I don’t know if Cable will ever truly be ‘recovered’ from his addictions. He can stay clean and he can maintain his sobriety, but those demons don’t just disappear…they’re always there hoping that Cable allows them back into his life. And, there is no way that Affton has recovered from her mother’s neglect due to her addiction or the fact that Affton gave her whole heart to someone who always let her down. That kind of past…that kind of treatment can never be erased, and the fact that she had to go through someone else’s addiction with him and fight for him when he couldn’t or wouldn’t fight for himself is not something that can be forgotten.

The lessons that Affton and Cable teach each other are brutal and heartbreaking. She’s had a front row seat to Cable’s downward spiral and because she was the only one who intervened, she now finds herself responsible for his sobriety, and even though the situation was forced upon her, the days and weeks they’re together redefine her feelings for Cable, forcing her to readjust her life, in some ways, while still maintaining the parts she deems most important.

But these two bent but not broken characters can move forward, knowing that what they’ve been through, both individually and together, will continue to define them but it no longer has to hold them back or make them feel like they need to put up walls and keep people out because it’s clear that if there is someone fighting right along side the addict then there’s every chance that they will finally see improvement…finally see the light that has been submerged in the darkness for far too long…finally feel like they’ve somewhat recovered and regained control of their life, even in the smallest of ways.

4.5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

I took another swallow of cinnamon-flavored booze and made a face as it burned down my throat. Maybe I could breathe fire. I needed to be able to if I was going to make it through the summer with Affton Reed looking over my shoulder. She had some of the strongest shields I’d ever seen. If my fire wasn’t hot enough, it would bounce off her and burn me to a crisp.

The sun was down, and I was pretty much sitting in the water now. I thought about lying down and letting it lift me up and carry me wherever it wanted. I wasn’t drifting anywhere good on my own. I heard splashing and felt the air behind me stir. No longer alone. No longer left to my own devices and bad choices.

I took another swig from the bottle, draining it, and looked over my shoulder at the girl making her way toward me. Her hair looked silver in the darkening light, and there was no mistaking the annoyance on her unmade-up face. She looked at me then shifted her gaze to the empty bottle in my hand. Her lips pulled into a frown, and her eyebrows tugged down into an angry V over the top of her nose.

“You aren’t going to make anything about this summer easy, are you, Cable?”

I had a thing for her voice. It was a little bit husky and a lot sweet with that slow, southern Texas twang in it. The way my name sounded when she said it, all exasperated and frustrated, was fucking sexy. It made me wonder what it would sound like when she whispered it in the dark while I was inside of her. I’d imagined that more times than I could count over the last eighteen months.

“I don’t really do easy, Reed.” I looked at the empty bottle in my hand and contemplated tossing it into the Gulf. Knowing my luck, I’d hit some endangered marine life and give the judge one more reason to add months onto my sentence. Instead, I reached up and handed it to the leggy blonde who was now standing next to me, the water well above her ankles.

“Jesus. Did you drink this whole thing?” She sounded incensed, and when I rolled my eyes up to look at her, it was clear she was contemplating hitting me over the head with the very weapon I’d just handed to her.

I shrugged. “Pretty much.” The bubbly teen girls barely had the chance to put a dent in it before I swooped in and snagged their stash.

She sighed from where she was hovering above me. I jolted in shock when she suddenly lowered herself to the wet sand next to me, the water immediately soaking into her frayed cutoffs and swirling around her ankles and hips as she copied my pose, my empty bottle caught between her feet. She leaned forward, rested her cheek on her knee, and gazed at me steadily out of those mesmerizing eyes. “I tried to tell your mother this was hopeless. I warned her there is no helping someone who doesn’t want to be helped. I don’t want to be here, Cable.” Her voice was hard, and I was surprised that her admission hurt a little bit. I didn’t want to be around me most of the time, but I was used to other people flocking to me, vying for my attention. “I don’t want to be here, but I have to be, so that means you’re stuck with me no matter how difficult you decide to make the next couple of months. I don’t have a choice.”

I wanted a cigarette. I needed something to occupy my hands and my mouth. I’d left the smokes and m y t-shirt on the steps of the deck off dad’s house. The steps led to the beach, just a few feet from the water. It was a beautiful house on a prime piece of property. With Affton here, it was nothing more than an expensive jail cell.

I knew exactly what means my mother had gone to in order to get Affton to agree to this madness. She told me outright she was blackmailing my former classmate, I think in a thinly veiled attempt to make me care about someone else’s future if I wouldn’t care about my own. I knew if I drove Affton away, her father would lose his job. It wasn’t fair, but my mom had been nothing short of ruthless in her pursuit of my sobriety. “My mom can be very convincing when she puts her mind to it.” She could also be tough as nails and immovable when she wanted something.

Affton snorted and shifted so her chin was resting on her knee instead of her cheek. She looked out over the endless landscape of water and sky, and I shivered even though it wasn’t cold. I lifted a hand to run it through my hair. My unease lived inside of me, crawled all around my bones and under my skin. I wasn’t used to it making its way to the surface because of someone else. There was a lot unsaid between me and this girl. The few words we’d exchanged were powerful, important ones that hung heavy between us. It was so much easier when I looked at her, and she refused to look back.

“I don’t think convincing is the word I would use…more like conniving. Either way, she tied my hands, so succeed or fail, you are stuck with me until the end of summer. Let’s get you into the house so you can sleep this bottle off and pray you don’t get popped for a piss test tomorrow.” She grabbed the bottle from where she had plunked the base in the sand and lifted a pale eyebrow at me. “You should have picked something…” she trailed off and gave me a shrug. “Less wussy to enjoy your last binge with. This stuff tastes like toothpaste.”

She offered me her free hand, and for a second all I could picture was grabbing it and pulling her under with me, letting the water cover us both and take us somewhere we would both rather be. I didn’t. I took her hand and struggled to my feet. Months of forced sobriety tumbled away under the wash of cinnamon whiskey. I wobbled and almost went back down, but before I could nose dive into the shallow water, Affton was there, arm around my waist, empty bottle pressed into my side, a chilly reminder that I’d already fucked this up and it was only the first day.

I had no idea how either one of us was going to survive the summer, and if we did, I had no idea how I was supposed to survive beyond that when I was once again left to my own devious and duplicitous devices.

ARRANGED: A Masters and Mercenaries Novellaby Lexi Blake

As Loa Mali’s sovereign, KashKamdar is always in control, the final authority. Until his mother uses an ancient law to force her son into marriage. His prospective queen,Dayita Samar, is a buttoned-up intellectual, nothing like Kash’s usual party girl. Still, from the moment of their forced engagement, he can’t stop thinking about her. Could Day help him find respite from the crushing responsibility he’s carried all his life? This fairy tale could have a happy ending, if only they can escape Kash’s past…

Review

Holy Hell do I have a new favorite Mistress/heroine/Professor Queen to add to my list of outstanding female characters. Dayita Samar is one heck of a woman and the complexity of her character is due to the control and dominance she yields as well as her ability to know her worth and demand an equal place in the eyes of men who try to control her…who try to bring her to her knees in a servile role – one that she adamantly refuses to play no matter the rank or status of those who look to demean her.

Everything about Day worked for me! She reads people so well and knows exactly what Kash needs, even if he’s unwilling to admit to it. Day gives a voice to the women of her country, and she empowers them to speak for themselves, using both her intelligence and her stellar personality to evoke change in a kingdom that is very set in its ways when it comes to the monarchy and its role with the people. It doesn’t matter that she’s a commoner…it doesn’t matter that she’s into dominatrix…what matters is that she’s the woman who can save Kash from himself…the woman who can give him stability and force him to accept who he is and what he needs to deal with the pressure of his duties as King.

Kashmir Kamdar definitely has a playboy reputation and a past filled with weak women who have graced his bed but nothing else. Because Kash shares a history with Day, the arranged marriage his mother has forced on him doesn’t sound quite as bad as it did before he knew, but 15 years is a long separation and the man and woman Kash and Day are now is nothing like they were at Oxford, and due to Kash’s dalliances for the past five years, it’s difficult to say whether this forced relationship will be what turns Kash’s life and role in his kingdom around or if it sends him spiraling even further because a King is not supposed to want/need to submit to anyone, let alone a woman when he has a country to command.

Despite the fact that Kash and Dayita’s story is a novella, the points of contention that they must confront are numerous and complex. Kash has turned into a ruler who does not hold much creditability with his people and because of his insecurities and his self-imposed failures, he’s unable to see with clarity what Day is offering him as her lowly servant in their bedroom but nowhere else. And, the struggle to get Kash to see his desires as anything but perverse is not something that will happen quickly because he’s ingrained who he’s supposed to be according to his deceased father’s dictates and he can’t get passed who he should be even if it’s not exactly who he is or who he wants to be.

Arranged is a fantastic addition to Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries series, and it’s a story with the perfect mix of conflict, a bit of suspense, steamy submission, and a badass heroine who knows exactly how to please her King!

TANGLED: A Dark Protectors—Reece Family Novellaby Rebecca Zanetti

Ginny O’Toole has spent a lifetime repaying her family’s debt, and she’s finally at the end of her servitude with one last job. Of course, it couldn’t be easy. After stealing the computer files that will free her once and for all, she finds herself on the run from Theo Reese, a pissed off vampire who has never fallen for her helpless act. A deadly predator too sexy for his own good. If he doesn’t knock it off, he’s going to see just how powerful she can really be.

HOLD ME: A Stark Ever After Novella by J. Kenner

My life with Damien has never been fuller. Every day is a miracle, and every night I lose myself in the oasis of his arms. But there are new challenges, too. Our families. Our careers. I know we will survive—we have to. Because I cannot live without Damien by my side. But sometimes the darkness seems overwhelming, and I am terrified that the day will come when Damien cannot bring the light.

Review

J. Kenner can NEVER stop writing about Damien and Nikki Stark’s life because every glimpse, regardless of how big or small, into their lives exemplifies just how dynamic of a couple they are and how magnetic their connection is as well as how their passion for love and life drives their personal and professional lives.

In Hold Me, it’s all about balance…about finding what works best for Nikki and Damien’s life and following through with their own plan without feeling inferior or defeated simply because they veered from their path a bit to live life on their own terms…not anyone else’s.

Juggling being a business woman, a mother, and a wife is not an easy feat; in fact, many women feel incapable, which then makes her begin to doubt her abilities to keep all parts of her life afloat while giving equal parts of herself to those who depend on her. And, the fact that someone as driven and independent as Nikki Stark finds herself exhausted and overwhelmed with the prospect of returning to work full-time and missing any of her sweet baby girls’ “firsts” drives home the fact that it’s okay to take a step back, determine what’s most important for her and her family, and become who she needs to be for her family but also for herself.

Damien and Nikki Stark are incredibly lucky, and they don’t take any part of their lives for granted because they’ve been through too much already to feel any less than humbled by what they get to experience every day.

In Hold Me, Damien continues to be Nikki’s rock, comforting her and giving her everything she needs with both his kindness and his filthiness; she’s stronger because he’s by her side, refusing to let her down, protecting their future the best they can. They are partners in every sense of the word, and I can’t wait to see where J. Kenner takes this power couple next!
