Review

Any future together for Spencer Dean and Brooke Hamlin stopped being a possibility five years ago when Brooke broke Spencer’s heart and walked away without a second glance and without an explanation as to the reasons behind her abrupt departure.

But the past always has a way of encroaching on the present and when Brooke’s future career depends on Spencer’s acquiescence, it’s clear that if these two don’t make amends and have an honest conversation about what happened all those years ago, Spencer and Brooke’s hearts will never mend and Brooke will never have a chance to prove she can handle herself in front of and behind the camera.

I love second chance romance stories, especially when the love the hero and heroine felt for each other never dissipated. In Spencer’s perspective, Brooke is the reason his life imploded, leaving him unable to move past how she left things and the many unanswered questions he has. But while it’s clear that it was Brooke’s actions that destroyed her relationship with Spencer, what readers are told about the circumstances surrounding their break up is much needed information – insight that absolutely proves that the decision was forced upon her and the fact that she’s berated herself and broken her own heart many times over attempting to deal with the fallout of her involuntary act shows just how much she regretted losing the only man she’s ever loved.

The premise behind J. Kenner’s Man of the Month series is to provide fast paced sultry and sweet reads that invite readers to experience hot and heavy encounters between the heroes and the heroines, and while there is some backstory provided and the plot has some substance to it in terms of why the characters are coming together – to save their favorite bar – The Fix on Sixth – and how all the characters are connected, these stories aren’t meant to dive too deep into anything too dramatic or emotional, keeping things mostly light and interweaving those moments with the sizzling encounters experienced by the hero and the heroine.

Two spots in the calendar have been filled, but there are still ten more to assign, and I can’t wait to see which males become Mr. March through December…I’m sure they’ll be gorgeous and also have to be persuaded to participate…just like the first two.

RELEASE DAY LAUNCH: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: THE UPSIDE OF BEING SINGLE by Emma Hart

If anyone asks, I knew better than to flash my boobs for Mardi Gras beads.

I still don’t know why I did it.
Maybe it was the dare from my two best friends.
Maybe it was the guys on the balcony saying they’d throw Fireball shots with the beads.
Or maybe it was the quiet guy in the corner of that same balcony with piercing gray eyes, wavy dark hair, and a smile so tempting I wanted to climb up there and lick it off his face.
Maybe it was because I never thought I’d see them again.
Not that it matters. Not today.
Because the hotel I manage was finally bought-and the guy who walks in and introduces himself as my new boss is Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent.

There are many upsides to being single.
Your new boss knowing what your boobs look like?
Not one of them.

Review

The Upside of Reading an Emma Hart Romantic Comedy…

Upside #1: Hart creates some of the best groups of girlfriends – those women who ‘get’ one another and aren’t afraid to call each other on their ‘shit’ as well as fight to the death if someone threatens one of their girls!

Mellie and her two best friends are a tight group who cause mischief together as well as help one another put their lives back on track once they go ‘off the rails’ a bit. And even though they might not always agree on a course of action when it comes to the opposite sex, they always have one another’s back regardless of how right/wrong they end up being.

Upside #2: The chemistry between the hero and heroine resonates off of every page of the story.

Who would have thought that flashing her boobs would be the start of something hot and messy with Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent, and despite the fact that he turns out to be her boss, which means a line would be crossed if Mellie were to act on her feelings for Jake, it’s clear in every interaction, every smoldering look that it’s not a matter of if but when they’ll cross that line and prove just how hot they are for one another.

Upside #3: Hart always creates heroines who are feisty with their own set of quirks that make them relatable to readers.

Mellie Rogers may be ‘life-challenged’ but she kicks ass at it, and it’s clear by the care she takes at her job that she understands the importance of paving one’s own way. She’s stubborn and a spitfire which make for some interesting interactions between her and Jake and every time she winds him up or vice versa, the hot mess that is Mellie is front and center, creating humorous and sizzling moments between her and the man who lights her up in a number of ways.

As you can see, there’s really no downside to picking up any one of Emma Hart’s stories…no matter which one you choose, you’re in for laughs and sighs as well as a good amount of sexual tension and hilarious interactions.

The Upside of Being Single may start off with all of Mellie’s reasons for not dating or having a significant other, but by the time the story’s over, it’s clear that Jacob Creed turns her views upside down and proves the upside of falling for a man who takes you for who you are…eccentricities and all!

Excerpt

“I just-I don’t get it.” I threw myself onto the sofa and almost sent the box of donuts flying onto the floor.

Thankfully, Peyton was quicker than the box. She grabbed it and sat back, hugging it to herself. “First, watch the donuts. I got the last two pink sprinkles, and I’m partial to them.” She stroked the top of the box. “Second, what don’t you get? How he doesn’t care about your boobs? I don’t care about them either.”

“You’re not supposed to care about my boobs. You’re a woman, for a start.”

“I care about your boobs,” Chloe interrupted, tucking her blond hair behind her ear. “I think you have great boobs. Bra or no bra.”

“Usually no bra,” Peyton added.

“I’m not afraid to throw something at you,” I warned her. “This is awkward.”

“Ugh! Get over yourself, Melanie!” Peyton snapped her fingers. “You are a grown woman. He is a grown man. He saw your tits. So what? Steven Lawrence saw your tits five times in junior year.”

I snatched a donut from the box. Don’t tell my hips. “We were dating! It’s entirely different!”

Chloe delicately picked up a white-iced donut before saying, “She’s right. It is different, Peyt. They were dating, and Jacob is her boss. You can’t expect her to just get over that. It is partly your fault.”

“It’s just as much your fault,” Peyton reminded her, then looked at me and nodded toward Chloe. “Drunky smurf over here shook her Tic-Tacs like she was in front of a bachelor party leaving a curry house.”

I choked on my laughter. “That’s not the point. You got us drunk. It’s almost entirely your fault.”

“Look, sunshine,” she said, tearing a bite of donut off the ring so her words were muffled. “I didn’t grab your shirt and whip it up like a two-dollar hooker on overtime. You did that, so grow a pair and take responsibility for your actions.”

“You sound like you don’t want to take responsibility for yours.”

“Hey. You’re big girls. You can refuse cocktails.”

Chloe and I shared a glance. “Refuse cocktails?” she said. “I don’t understand.”

“You have us mixed up with your other friends,” I continued. “But, wait. You don’t have other friends.”

“I have plenty of friends,” Peyt said.

“Friends without penises. Or benefits.”

She paused. “We’re not talking about me. We’re talking about your hot boss who knows what your tits look like.”

“You’re not helping.”

“I’m not trying to help. I’m trying to slap your size-eight ass into reality, you idiot.”

“Slap mine into reality and I’m putting yours on a catapult. Right into the middle of the gulf.” I tore my donut in two and gave her boobs a pointed look. “I always wondered if silicone would float.”

By day, New York Times and USA Today bestselling New Adult author Emma Hart dons a cape and calls herself Super Mum to two beautiful little monsters. By night, she drops the cape, pours a glass of whatever she fancies-usually wine-and writes books.

Emma is working on Top Secret projects she will share with her followers and fans at every available opportunity. Naturally, all Top Secret projects involve a dashingly hot guy who likes to forget to wear a shirt, a sprinkling (or several) of hold-onto-your-panties hot scenes, and a whole lotta love.

She likes to be busy-unless busy involves doing the dishes, but that seems to be when all the ideas come to life.

RELEASE DAY LAUNCH: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: TEMPTING LOVE by Kelly Elliott

Can a woman actually make you feel like you’re losing your damn mind?

Yes.

If she is Corina Miller.

The only woman who has ever made me long for something more, and let me tell you, that has me all kinds of messed up. After months of ignoring my feelings, it’s clear to me I’ve fallen for those piercing blue eyes and sexy smile.

But is it too late?

Have I pushed her into the arms of someone else?

Hell no am I letting that happen.

I’m on a mission to win the heart of the only woman I’ve ever cared about-and the only thing standing in my way is one stubborn and pissed off Corina.

I always did like a challenge.

Review

I adore the Parker family, and each and every time Kelly Elliott puts the right person in one of the Parker sibling’s paths, readers can anticipate the push and pull that’s going to happen between the hero and heroine, regardless of how opposed to commitment and relationships one or the other might be and we can also expect the other Parkers to do whatever they can to allow their sibling to have the happily ever after that s/he deserves.

Book Three is Mitchell’s story and Tempting Love is the perfect title for what occurs after he spends one night/morning with Corina Miller because regardless of his less than gentlemanly actions after their encounter, Mitchell can’t get Corina out of his head and for the next six months despite his best effort to resume his normal routine when it comes to the fairer sex, he can’t escape his feelings for Corina…too bad he might have already crashed and burned without really trying to woo or win Corina’s heart.

Corina is a heroine who readers can relate to, especially those readers who have given their heart to someone and watched him destroy it with insensitive behavior. Corina was invested in building something with Mitchell from the start, but their one night together and his subsequent actions after forced her to attempt to move on from her deep feelings for him, which means when he finally does come around, she’ll have to determine if she’s willing to give Mitchell a second chance when he’s already broken her heart one time too many.

The fact that Mitchell has to work for another chance with Corina proves the kind of woman she is and the type of man she deserves and while she puts Mitchell through his paces, it’s also clear just how much she wants to give into her feelings for him even though she’s still recovering from the first time he broke her heart, and as mad as I was at Mitchell for his callous and clueless behavior after his night with Corina, he proves himself to her and to readers when he goes all in, working to win Corina’s heart one woo and one seduction at a time.

I love the world and characters that Kelly Elliott has created in her Cowboys & Angels’ series. I feel like I’m an honorary resident of Oak Springs and a part of the Parker clan. The Parker siblings work their magic in Tempting Love and prove just how amazing and somewhat obnoxious it is to have a big, close family where there’s no privacy and people aren’t afraid to call other people out on their behavior and actions regardless of the fact that it just might be none of their business!

I do have to admit that the ending seemed like it was going at warp speed when it came to Corina and Mitchell’s relationship, which made me question why everything needed to happen as quickly as it does, but regardless of my concern about the conclusion of the story, I enjoyed my time spent with the Parkers and I can’t wait to see what happens to one Parker in particular now that Harley Carbajal is back in town.

Excerpt

I followed him, my hands shaking as I grew angrier by the second. “That’s it? You’re going to let me move out?”

Mitchell reached for his keys, then turned to me. “I can’t force you to stay here, Corina. If you’re unhappy, then yes, you should leave. Do I want you to? No, I don’t. I know I fucked up, but if you’re going to throw it in my face every goddamn chance you get, then you’re right, this won’t work.”

He headed to the stairs that led down to his front door. My heart raced, and I knew I couldn’t leave it like this. Closing my eyes, I called out to him. “Mitch! You never asked me to the Pecan Street Honky Tonk.”

Stopping, he looked back up at me. “What?”

I swallowed hard and took in a quick breath. “The dance, you never asked me. And well, Lane asked me.”

Sadness swept over his face. “What did you tell him?”

Wringing my hands together, I answered, “I haven’t responded…yet. I was waiting for you.”

Mitchell rushed back up the steps and stopped in front of me. I don’t think I’d ever felt my stomach dip like it did when he raced toward me. He cupped my face and leaned in. My chest rose and fell with each breath as I waited for him to speak. His touch sent a flurry of butterflies through my chest.

“Corina, will you go with me to the street dance next weekend?”

My teeth sank into my lip, and I watched as his eyes filled with lust.

“Yes.” I smiled and added, “But only as friends.”

The corner of his mouth rose into a sexy smirk. God, how I loved that smile of his. “It’s a date, then.”

“As friends,” I added.

He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. Before I could even process his lips, they were gone and he was stepping back. “I’ll take it. For now.”

About ESCAPE

Everything inside of him is screaming that he needs to run, he needs to go, he needs to escape.

Lane Warner is used to being overshadowed and overlooked.

After all, he’s the youngest brother and the most laid back one in the family. He’s the one known for going with the flow and not making waves, even when things seem to be at their worst.

Very few things in life have had the ability to rile Lane up and get under his skin. At the top of that list is his childhood friend Brynn Fox…no…Brynn Warner. The fact that they share a last name was the one thing that has the power to light him up and spin him out of control like no other. There was no calm, cool and collected when it comes to all the reasons why Brynn had to become part of his family.

It’s slowly killing him to keep wanting what he can’t have, so Lane sees only one way to stop himself from doing something they’ll both regret…he has to leave.

Everything inside of her is calling out to find him, to follow, to bring him home.

Brynn Warner is used to being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

After all, she’s the daughter of an unrepentant gold-digger who never once blinked at being the cause of her daughter’s pain and suffering.

Very few things in her life have ever brought happiness and a sense of security. At the very top of that list is Lane Warner. She has unwaveringly loved the youngest Warner since the first minute she laid eyes on him. He was everything Brynn ever wanted and everything she knew she could never have.

Sometimes the right choice is the one that hurts the most and Brynn’s had to make a few that felt like they might be the end of her.

When Lane takes off, one thing is clear, the only choice Brynn has is to go after him.

She’s going to bring her wayward cowboy home….whatever it takes.

Escape is a standalone novel, the third book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them.

Review

I thought I was ready for the youngest Warner’s story; I anticipated the complications that would surround Lane and Brynn due to the nature of their interwoven pasts and the unrequited and unspoken love that they felt for one another, but I could never have prepared myself for just how tortured both characters are by two simple words…Brynn’s ‘no’ to a young Lane’s request and Brynn’s ‘yes’ to someone who would irrevocably change the dynamics of Brynn and Lane’s relationship the very day she uttered that word and even now despite the amount of time that has passed and the reasons behind Brynn becoming a Warner all those years ago.

Just like the previous two stories in the series, Escape involves some high intensity situations amongst the heartbreaking and heartwarming scenes between Lane and Brynn. It’s time for them to be honest about their feelings and about the reasons for the dissolution of their friendship, and while it’s clear that this conversation won’t be an easy one and it might stir up a good amount of anger and sadness, if they can’t be completely open with each other, they do not stand a chance at repairing their connection and perhaps even having a second chance at a first time love.

Jay Crownover masterfully weaves Lane and Brynn’s past and the actions that destroyed their friendship and made them both miserable with their present – a pivotal time that will either mend their fractured relationship or decimate any chance they have for building a new bond – one that will sustain any further roadblocks and help them to move forward as united and loving partners, sharing a connection like Lane’s two older brothers have with their significant others – the women who brought Cyrus and Sutton back to life and made them whole again.

Even though it’s time to say goodbye to the extended Warner clan with the ending of the series, their heart….their fight…their stories will remain with me and with many readers because this series is one that allowed readers to become a member of the Warner family and revel in their happiness as well as witness how they move beyond their painful pasts and find the person who fits them in every way.

I’m always in awe of Jay Crownover’s storytelling…as an English teacher, I’m enthralled with well written books – stories that seem to effortlessly use the English language and construct an endearing and entertaining plot line that I just can’t get enough of and time and time again, I find those kinds of stories every time I open up a Jay Crownover original.

Excerpt

Brynn

He arched a dark eyebrow. “I’m in no rush to get back to the mess I’m sure we both left behind. I was planning on hanging out with Sutton for a few more days then making my way back home. There’s no reason we can’t make the drive together…unless you would rather fly?”

I stared at him in silence for a long moment, weighing his words carefully. It had to be more than a thousand miles between Sacramento and Sheridan. That was hours and hours of him and me alone in his truck. We purposely avoided being alone when we were at the ranch. There were many awkward moments of silence and word we wanted to say but couldn’t. On the one hand, it was all I ever wanted. Lane Warner, with no place to escape me and our tangled, tormented history. We would finally be forced to put the past to rest, whatever that meant for us moving forward. On the other hand, the idea of being alone with him, trapped in that horrible, uneasy silence that plagued us since the second I said “yes” all those years ago made my skin crawl. There was no guarantee that Lane was ready to lance the wounds we’d both caused that had long been infected and festering. He seemed content to pretend things were fine when they were anything but.

He rubbed his thumb along the corner of his mouth and gave me that grin of his that ensured he got whatever it was he wanted. “We can even take a few days and go to the Grand Canyon and Vegas if you don’t mind adding a few stops and several hundred miles onto the trip. I’ve never really been anywhere outside of home and who knows when we’ll get the chance to see it all again.”

He was so persuasive with that charismatic smile and the soft look in his eyes.

Daye caught my attention as she reached for my hand. She was bouncing on her toes, eyes as excited as her uncle’s. “You have to say yes. It sounds like so much fun. I want to go to the Grand Canyon one day. Did you know that you can ride horses down to the bottom?” She had the Warner charm already and did she ever know how to use it.

“That does sound like fun, but are you sure I wouldn’t cramp your style? Especially in a place like Vegas.” I couldn’t disguise the hesitation in my tone.

Lane never made it a secret that he liked the ladies, the flashier and easier the better. Vegas was built for a guy looking for a good time, and Lane was always up for some fun. There was no way I was hitching a ride with him if it meant that I was going to have front row seats for all of his bedroom antics. I was willing to suffer through a lot to get him back where he belonged, but my battered heart couldn’t take watching him with other women anymore. That was one thing about our tenuous relationship that had to change.

He chuckled softly and hooked his thumbs into the front pockets of his jeans. The action pulled the denim down low on his hips flashing a strip of hard, tanned skin. I knew that under his t-shirt he was rocking more than a six pack and had a body littered with carved muscles and sharp lines. Ranch life had blessed all the Warner boys with bodies to die for, but somehow Lane ended up looking the best of all of them. He was quintessential cowboy, rugged and rough in all the best ways. Too bad he knew it and used every inch of that delectable body to his advantage. I couldn’t remember the last time he spent the night alone. All his conquests had to creep past my bedroom door to make their early morning getaway, and there was always a steady stream of them.

“No, Brynn. You absolutely won’t cramp my style. In fact, I can’t imagine anyone else I would want to drive around the country with. I think we could both use the break from our reality and time away from it all. I promise to behave. So,” he lifted his eyebrows and gave me that panty-melting grin. “Are you in or out?”

We watched each other, neither of us giving anything away. I wanted to go with Lane more than I wanted my next breath but I couldn’t tell if he wanted me to tag along with the same ferocity. It was the story of my life, a vicious cycle of wanting Lane Warner. Me wanting him and him not deciding what he wanted.

Was I in or out?

Of course, I was in…I was all in. I was in so deep with him there was no hope of me ever finding my way out. There was only one response to his question that I could give, my brain and my heart wouldn’t allow any other one.

“I’m in.

Rock Chick Reawakening: A Rock Chick Novellaby Kristen Ashley

A prequel to Kristen’s Rock Chick series, Rock Chick Reawakening shares the tale of the devastating event that nearly broke Daisy, an event that set Marcus Sloan-one of Denver’s most respected businessmen and one of the Denver underground’s most feared crime bosses-into finally making his move to win the heart of the woman who stole his.

Review

I am first and foremost a Rock Chick! It was Kristen Ashley’s Rock Chick series that solidified my love of the badass alpha male and the righteous heroine as well as the idea of how a happily ever after occurs amidst the pain, chaos, and darkness of life. Indy will always be my favorite Rock Chick because it all started with her and Lee, but if there’s ever been a member of the Rock Chick Nation that I’ve always wanted to know more about it has to be Daisy because underneath her sweetness and her sass is a tale that needed to be told so that readers could fully understand what it means to be a Rock Chick and the hellish ways that some women have to go through in order to get to a castle and a man who’s meant for only her.

Daisy’s upbringing was not one made of fairy tales, but if she had had a fairy godmother, it would have been Miss Annamae – a southern woman who saw Daisy as the good girl that she is and gave her a way out of her deplorable situation. And even though Daisy’s choices might not have been ones Miss Annamae would have had Daisy make, Daisy never let go of Miss Annamae’s southern lady lessons or the idea that being herself regardless of how anyone cuts her down is the only way she can keep her head hell high when everything and everyone else around her wants her to flounder and fail.

The Daisy readers have grown to adore through her interaction with the other Rock Chicks is exactly the one that Kristen Ashley reintroduces us to in Rock Chick Reawakening, and she’s just as full of sparkle and sass in her earlier years as she is as Marcus Sloan’s wife, maybe even more so because Daisy had to fight like hell to not act like or feel like the white trash others tried to tell her she was.

Daisy definitely redefines herself once she becomes involved with Marcus, but what’s solidified in this prequel is that she’s always been a larger-than-life woman – one who isn’t afraid to be her own person whether it be in how she dresses, how she talks, or how she commands a stripper pole. Daisy doesn’t put on an act for anyone and regardless of the darkness that surrounded her life, she always found a way to live in the light, even if it was only a slit of goodness.

Marcus Sloan has always been portrayed as a no nonsense business man – one who delves out his own sense of righteousness and feels no remorse in doing so. He’s always been on the wrong side of the law, but he’s also been a devoted husband who’s always willing to give Daisy whatever she wants because he knows she deserves it. Readers get to see another side of Marcus in Rock Chick Reawakening and through his own words, we see the man who knew what he wanted and went about claiming it or in this case her – the woman he’s waited to come into his life for decades.

With Marcus’ help, Daisy learned to build castles that sparkle and shine, and she built a life with him full of love, laughter, and honey bunches of oats, making their life together as sugary sweet as possible.

Daisy and Marcus’ story reawakened my love for the Rock Chick series, and in a way, brought the series full circle, allowing readers to fully understand what it takes to be a full fledged Rock Chick and how there’s no better group to be a part of because not only do you have a kickass group of girlfriends, but you also have the Hot Bunch and there’s nothing better than a group of alpha males who dominate and devote their lives to the girl who owns him body and soul.

Adoring Ink: A Montgomery Ink Novella by Carrie Ann Ryan

Holly Rose fell in love with a Montgomery, but left him when he couldn’t love her back. She might have been the one to break the ties and ensure her ex’s happy ending, but now Holly’s afraid she’s missed out on more than a chance at forever. Brody Deacon loves ink, women, fast cars, and living life like there’s no tomorrow. The thing is, he doesn’t know if he has a tomorrow at all. When he sees Holly, he’s not only intrigued, he also hears the warnings of danger in his head. She’s too sweet, too innocent. But when Holly asks him to help her grab the bull by the horns, he can’t help but go all in.

Review

Adoring Ink is Holly Rose and Brody Deacon’s story, and while they appear to be an unlikely pair due to Holly’s good girl demeanor and Brody’s hard and fast lifestyle, Brody might just be the right guy for what Holly wants and needs – someone to check off her adventurous bucket list and give her the thrills and chills that she’s always been too afraid to embrace but now can’t help but want to experience EVERYTHING.

I’m new to Carrie Ann Ryan’s Montgomery Ink series, and while I don’t have a lot of background about the Montgomery family, Holly and Brody’s novella was a perfect introduction because even though neither the hero nor the heroine are related to the Montgomery clan, Ryan provides enough background information and sets the story  up in a way that allows for easy assimilation into an already established series and the fact that Holly and Brody have ties to the family whose lives are the focus of most of the books in the series, it provides readers with a different perspective – one that provides insight that we normally wouldn’t get.

I’m so glad that I discovered the Montgomery Ink series in 1001 Dark Nights Discovery Bundle; it definitely sounds like my kind of romance series, so I’ll be sure to check out the rest of the books and their alpha male characters!

Sweet Rivalry by K. Bromberg

Ryder Rodgers had a plan. He was going to stride into the conference room and win the biggest contract of his career. But when he walked in and heard the voice of one of his competitors, all his plans were shot to hell. Harper Denton was always on top. In college. First in their class. Always using every advantage to edge him out to win the coveted positions. The only one who could beat him. His academic rival. More like a constant thorn in his side. The fact that she’s gorgeous and bright won’t distract him. This time, Ryder’s determined to be the one on top. But not if Harper can help it.

Review

Sweet Rivalry has two components of the romance genre that I LOVE – an “enemies” to lovers’ story line and a heroine who is a mixture of sassy and sweet and bows down to no man because she is just as smart and as capable as any of them, and she works her ass off to prove that very idea. Throw in a bearded and tattooed alpha hero and K. Bromberg has given readers a story filled with sexual tension, old/new feelings, and a competition that hopefully ends in a whole lot of “reward sex” for both Harper Denton and Ryder Rodgers.

I adored getting inside both Harper and Ryder’s heads and understanding how they felt about each other thirteen years ago when they were college adversaries and what their unexpected reunion means for both of them in terms of their competitive edge as well as the need they have to finish what was started all those years ago.

Harper’s a woman in a business world full of men who see her as inferior solely based on her gender and she’s spent her entire career proving that theory wrong and showing all her naysayers that she isn’t known as a no-nonsense, ball-busting business woman for nothing, and even though this isn’t a new idea for Ryder, he does see Harper in a new light in terms of her confidence and snarky attitude and what he sees only adds to his attraction, making her quite the distraction for him as they work against each other to win an important bid for their respective bosses.

Neither Harper nor Ryder have lost their competitive edge since leaving college and entering the work force, and it’s clear that things are just like they used to be when it comes to sparring and competing with one another for that coveted first place position.

Harper may be known as the “Ice Queen,” but Ryder’s sexiness as well as his dirty talk definitely melts Harper into a malleable ball of nerves, allowing her to realize that beard burn is an actual thing and she wouldn’t mind experiencing it daily;)

Sweet Rivalry is a quick read that oozes sexuality and sassiness. The sexual chemistry and tension between the hero and the heroine resonates from the pages from the very beginning, so it’s not about IF they’ll give into their attraction to each other, it’s a matter of how long they’ll hold off until they can’t help but rip each other’s clothes off.

Harper and Ryder are dynamic characters even though their story is a novella; readers are able to see how both of them have changed during the 13 years they’ve spent on opposite sides of the US, and it’s also clear that there is unfinished business of the kissing variety that they both need to deal with since they’re living in the same city and contending for the same jobs again.

It’s definitely game on for the duration of the story, but the idea of winning redefines itself a bit when they realize what they do for one another with it comes to their competitive edge and what they’re willing to do to advance their careers while staying true to who they are and the mutual respect they have for each other as they not only compete for a job but also take a risk on what’s always been brewing between them.

Shade’s Lady: A Reapers MC Novella by Joanna Wylde

Looking back, none of this would’ve happened if I hadn’t dropped my phone in the toilet. I mean, I could’ve walked away from him if I’d had it with me. Or maybe not. Maybe it was all over the first time he saw me, and he would’ve found another way. Probably-if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that Shade always gets what he wants, and apparently he wanted me. Right from the first.

Review

I love Joanna Wylde’s bikers and the world of her Reapers MC series is one that I can’t get enough of because her alphas are deliciously sexy and domineering, and they radiate all kinds of power and badassness! Alongside these strong men are heroines who are feisty and powerful in their own right because they can bring their bikers to their knees and make them want things they’ve never wanted before.

Shade epitomizes every aspect of what a badass biker should be! As the National President of the Reapers, his status allows for luxuries few others can have and he takes advantage of his position in order to get the things he wants, so when he sets his sights on Mandy McBride, there’s no stopping him from owning her, even if it’s only for a short time. And even though Mandy does know the rules of the game she’s playing with Shade, she can’t help but be drawn to him, and despite her shit track record with men and her pledge to remain single, the chemistry between her and Shade isn’t something he’ll allow her to put aside, which means their one-night stand isn’t over until Shade says it is and let’s just say he’s not done with her yet.

Even though Shade’s Lady is a novella, Joanna Wylde does a fantastic job of constructing Shade and Mandy’s story in a way that showcases who they are and what they grow to mean to each other. Shade is definitely a complex man whose dangerous and illegal lifestyle may not fit into Mandy’s world, but hell if he’ll allow that to stop them from exploring the connection they share. Mandy is an absolute hoot…her internal dialogue with Wonder Woman and her list of things for her Future Self were hilarious, but they also painted a picture of Mandy’s personality and her desire to protect her sister and her children by fighting through the bullshit that always seems to follow the McBride women.

Shade and Mandy’s story redefines the dictates and protocol of the one-night stand and also illustrates what it means to be a Reaper and the protection that comes with the MC at one’s back.

I adore the 1001 Dark Nights Series because it provides readers with insight into some of their favorite worlds as well as ones they may have never been to before; Shade’s Lady fits those dynamics perfectly because new readers can get a taste of Wlyde’s Reapers and loyal readers of her MC series will further comprehend who these alpha bikers are and the women who own them.

Fighting for Flight by JB Salsbury

What happens when in order to win, you’re forced to lose? The only daughter of an infamous Las Vegas pimp, Raven Morretti grew up an outsider. Liberated from the neglectful home of her prostitute mother, she finds solace as a mechanic. With few friends, she’s content with the simple life. Flying under the radar is all she knows and more than she expects. Until she catches the eye of local celebrity, UFL playboy, Jonah Slade. Jonah trades in his bad-boy reputation and puts his heart on the line. But when her father contacts her, setting in motion the ugly truth of her destiny, Jonah must choose.

Every Dark Nights tale is breathtakingly sexy and magically romantic.

Review

Fighting for Flight was quite an amazing introduction into JB Salsbury’s writing and character creation and development. Raven and Jonah’s story is gritty and dark, but it also illustrates the power of love and one’s ability to fight like s/he has never fought before when his/her back’s against the wall because a defeat equates to a potential loss of life and one’s freedom.

It’s clear that both Raven and Jonah are fighters, even if Jonah’s the professional fighter of the two. Raven’s been fighting against her upbringing and the ugly truth of who her parents were/are, choosing to live under the radar and hone her craft as a mechanic instead of giving into the temptation of the Las Vegas strip and all that it offers a beauty like her.

Raven doesn’t believe she needs anyone to protect her, but she soon learns that having someone in her corner, especially when it comes to dealing with her monster of a father, makes it easier to combat against how high stakes her life and her livelihood become.

Jonah is one hell of a fighter, which is good because he’s going to need to use all of his moves if he’s going to prove himself to Raven – the woman who has bewitched him unlike anyone has before. He’s not usually one who gambles on love and commitment, but it’s been clear from the start that Raven is unlike anyone else and he’ll do whatever it takes to prove himself to her and to himself.

Raven and Jonah’s path is not an easy one…partly because of how cautious Raven is and how independent she has had to be her entire life due to her circumstances but it’s also difficult because Jonah’s past experience with women and how he’s used them for only one thing makes it difficult for Raven to trust what Jonah says, even when her heart wants to believe every strong embrace and heartfelt word.

Fighting for Flight began my love for the Fighting world that JB Salsbury created, and each story introduced more amazing heroes and heroines and plot lines that broke my heart and slowly put it back together. I can’t get enough of this alpha fighters and the women who hold their hearts!

About the 1001 Dark Nights Bundle Authors

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.

Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.

New York Times bestselling author K. Bromberg writes contemporary novels that contain a mixture of sweet, emotional, a whole lot of sexy, and a little bit of real. She likes to write strong heroines, and damaged heroes who we love to hate and hate to love.

She’s a mixture of most of her female characters: sassy, intelligent, stubborn, reserved, outgoing, driven, emotional, strong, and wears her heart on her sleeve. All of which she displays daily with her husband and three children where they live in Southern California.

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced, Aced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, and Down Shift), and a novella (UnRaveled).

“Doesn’t matter who did it. Not anymore. I did the time. It’s over.”

When Drix was convicted of a crime–one he didn’t commit–he thought his life was over. But opportunity came with the Second Chance Program, the governor’s newest pet project to get delinquents off the streets, rehabilitated and back into society. Drix knows this is his chance to get his life back on track, even if it means being paraded in front of reporters for a while.

Elle knows she lives a life of privilege. As the governor’s daughter, she can open doors with her name alone. But the expectations and pressure to be someone she isn’t may be too much to handle. She wants to follow her own path, whatever that means.

When Drix and Elle meet, their connection is immediate, but so are their problems. Drix is not the type of boy Elle’s parents have in mind for her, and Elle is not the kind of girl who can understand Drix’s messy life.

Review

I don’t read many YA Romances anymore…partially because it’s difficult to connect with the characters and the teenage angst that overwhelms them and partly because I teach high school freshman and have a freshman son of my own, so separating my reality from my reading world can be trying and let’s just say, it frightens me to think about my son experiencing some of the things that YA characters do:/

BUT, if there is one author who I would gladly delve into the hearts and minds of teenage characters, it’s Katie McGarry. She’s an amazing storyteller because she allows her characters’ stories to play out at their own speed, making most of them slow burn kind of reads, which is actually what I would expect from this age group.

What I also love about McGarry’s stories is that she constructs characters who are anything but stereotypical. Her heroes and heroines are unique in their struggles, their life experiences, and the way they look at their lives and learn to traverse through the ups and downs that make up their journey. Her characters are also relatable and realistically portrayed…even readers who are so beyond removed from this particular age group can acknowledge the truth behind the characters’ representations and all that they must confront at an age where it’s impossible to truly understand the magnitude of their experiences.

Elle and Drix appear to come from two completely different worlds – Elle seems to have a ‘golden’ life, living in luxury and reaping the benefits of her father’s government position while Drix struggles in life, not only because of his conviction for a crime he didn’t commit but also due to how he is viewed as a blight on society. But appearances can be deceiving, so even though everyone around them believes that Elle and Drix have no business being together, the bond that they form and that continually grows is one that refuses to remain idle simply because of people’s biases and misjudgments, and while building a relationship is difficult for them due to outside circumstances and interferences, it’s clear that they’ll fight for what they have, especially because it provides them with a calming presence in the maelstrom of their lives.

Drix epitomizes the tortured hero, and rightly so, because he has had to endure much more than the ordinary teenage boy and now that he’s finished paying, albeit somewhat, for a crime he didn’t commit, he now must assimilate back into society, knowing how people judge the young man that he is and struggling to find his footing in a world that has already let him down. McGarry does a fantastic job of allowing readers to clearly see the demons and darkness he struggles with…there is so much self-doubt and fear that affects Drix’s psyche, but when he’s with a certain girl, the negative thoughts quiet and he feels a sense of peace, even if his connection with her would not be well received by society, especially her father.

Elle is a strong heroine who looks beyond people’s appearances in order to judge them on their actual worth, and while she takes a few missteps when it comes to her asserting herself and her beliefs to her parents, she refuses to be told how to live her life and her connection with Drix is a lifeline to being the girl…the person she wants to be despite her meddling mother and father.

I always get so caught up in the world and characters that Katie McGarry creates, and Say You’ll Remember Be followed that same pattern. I adored Elle and Drix’s story…it was heartwarming, heartbreaking, angsty, at times, emotionally overwhelming in all of the best ways. The secondary characters were a great fit for the story line and the chemistry between the hero and heroine resonated off of the pages of the story. I truly didn’t want the story to end because I was completely immersed into the lives of the characters and the development of not only their love story but of the people they aspired to be despite what they had to battle against to do so.

“Everyone says you have a blank slate.” My brother Axle sits beside me on the ground, arms resting on his bent knees, and he stares at the bonfire I built with my own two hands with only flint and sticks. It’s one of the many tricks I learned over the last three months. That and how to survive on my own in the middle of nowhere.

Trees and bears I can handle. It’s not knowing who I can trust, now that I’m home, that’s the problem. Axle knows this. It’s why he’s next to me as our friends and family walk around the backyard for the impromptu “Welcome Home” party I told Axle I didn’t want.

Someone in this yard is the reason why I spent a year away from home for a crime I didn’t commit.

My neck tenses, and I roll it in an attempt to release the anger. It took me close to eight months to find some Zen, and it has taken less than thirty minutes for some of the old underlying rage that followed me around like a black thunderhead to return.

Across from us, two girls I used to go to school with are roasting marshmallows. They’re waiting for me to talk to them. That’s who I was before: the smooth talker, the guy who made girls laugh and caused them to light up with a few specially chosen words. The right smile dropped at the right time, and panties would be shed. But I don’t feel up for conversation and I don’t feel like manipulating anyone anymore.

Crazy-I used to thrive when surrounded by people. The more, the better. But after being in juvenile detention for seven months and spending three in the wilderness taking part in an Outward Bound program for troubled teens, I’m more at ease by myself in front of a fire.

“They’ve all confirmed you’re walking out of all this with sealed records,” Axle continues.

Hel’s leaving out the part of how those records only remain sealed if I uphold my end of the plea deal-the agreement I made with the district attorney after I was arrested. I agreed to plead guilty, and the DA didn’t charge me as an adult and send me to hard-core prison. Considering we had no money for a lawyer to help prove my innocence, the deal sounded like the better of two bad options.

“You’re getting a massive second chance,” Axle says.

It was rotten luck that got me into this mess, but it happened at the right time. Our governor was searching for screwed-up teens to use for his pilot program. Someone high up in the world thought I stood a chance at turning my life around, but that second chance comes with a price. A price my brother is currently breaking down for me.

“This is a good thing. A blank slate. Not many people get one of those.”

Blank slate. That’s what I’m scared of. I may not have liked parts of the person I was before I was arrested, but at least I knew who I was. This blank slate, this chance to create someone new, scares me. This is a new type of pressure. At least I had a good excuse for being a delinquent before. Now, if I mess up, it’s because I’m truly broke.

The fire crackles then pops, and embers rise into the late May night. My younger sister laughs at the other end of the narrow yard near the aging shotgun house, and the sound is like an eight-eight beat with a high hat cymbal. It’s welcomed, and it’s the first time this feels like home.

She’s sixteen now, grown up faster than I’d prefer, and she’s one of the four people I love more than my own life. She’s also the only reason I’m still out here instead of holed up in my room. According to Axle, it was Holiday’s idea to set up the party.

Old Christmas lights are strung from one towering oak tree to the next, zigzagging green, red and blue across the yard. Most people brought their own chairs and a dish to share. My first meal as a free man and it’s hamburgers, hot dogs and potato salad. I don’t have the heart to tell her I would have given my left ball for a slice of thick crust pizza.

“She missed you,” Axle says, catching my train of sight.

“I missed her, too.” Those are my first words since we pulled in the driveway. I used to be the life of the party, but that was before, and as I said, I don’t know who I am anymore, so for now, I’m quiet.

“I missed you,” he says in such a low tone I barely catch it. “We weren’t the same without you.”

I take a deep breath because I’m not sure any of us will be the same again.

A Crack in Everything

Life used to be simple.

I was a city girl with humble dreams. Then Dylan O’Dea broke into my flat, held me against the wall and told me to stay quiet.

It was like in the movies, where the universe zeros in on a single scene. I looked into his eyes and knew he was going to change me.

For Dylan, the sky was always falling. He showed me how our world is a contradiction of beauty and ugliness. How we choose to ignore the awful and gloss over it with the palatable. How you need just a tiny drop of something unsavoury to create every great scent.

Pretty deep for a pair of teenagers living in a block of council flats in inner city Dublin, right Probably. But we weren’t typical. We both had our obsessions. Mine was growing things, Dylan’s was scent. He taught me how to use my nose, and I introduced him to the magic of flowers.

I had no idea that one day he’d build an empire from what we started together. But before that, there was love and happiness, tragedy and epic heartbreak…

My name is Evelyn Flynn and I’m going to tell you about the crack in everything.

A Crack in Everything is Book #1 in L.H. Cosway’s Cracks duet.

Excerpt

One

Inner City Dublin, Ireland. 2006.

Waiting for a flower bud to open was one of my favourite things.

It started out like a closed little pistachio. The next day its petals moved. The following day they spread. The day after that they spread a little bit more, and then finally the flower blossomed to its full potential.

I was waiting for the buds on my pink hibiscus to open, but they still had a few days to go yet. I poured a little water into the pot with a plastic bottle then screwed the cap back on. I was just about to place it on the shelf when someone hammered on my door.

It was a panicked knock, one that demanded attention. In this neighbourhood, it didn’t always bode well to open the door to knocking like this. I squinted through the peephole and recognised a boy I went to school with. His name was Dylan O’Dea, or was it O’Toole? Anyway, I was pretty sure he lived one or two floors below me here at St Mary’s Villas.

Don’t let the ‘Villas’ part fool you. There was nothing villa-like about this place. St Mary’s War Bunker would’ve been a more appropriate title. Everything was grey. The windows gave the barest minimum of light and every single flat smelled vaguely of mildew, no matter how much you cleaned or aired the place.

Dylan looked sweaty and desperate, and there was something about his panicked gaze that had me unlocking my door for him. Before I even had the chance to say a word, he barrelled in and slammed the door shut behind him.

“What the hell!” I exclaimed, at once regretting my decision. I lived with my aunt Yvonne, but she was at work and wouldn’t be home for hours.

Dylan stared me dead in the eye, his chest heaving, and raised a finger to his mouth in the universal gesture of ‘be quiet.’ I closed my mouth and a second later noise sounded from outside. People banged on doors the same way Dylan had been banging on mine. Our eyes met again, and he must’ve sensed I was going to say something because he came at me. He backed me up against the wall until his frame surrounded mine and his hand went to my mouth. I instantly struggled but then he whispered in my ear.

“Please, don’t make any noise. Some people are after me. I just need to hide here for a few minutes and then I’ll leave. I promise.”

I glared at him and lifted my foot to stomp on his ankle. He swore under his breath but didn’t loosen his hold.

“Fuck you,” I mumbled past his fingers. “Get out!” It sounded more like, “Fup Ooo. Et oot.”

“Please, Evelyn. I need your help.”

My heart hammered. He knew my name. Although it wasn’t so strange since most people knew each other’s names around here. It just felt odd for him to address me so familiarly, because we’d never spoken.

The sincerity in his dark blue eyes made me pause in my struggle. We stared at each other for another long moment, and goosebumps claimed my skin. His chest was wide and solid, and he smelled like cloves.

“If I lower my hand, do you promise not to scream?” he asked very quietly.

I nodded slowly, and his hand left my mouth. “Who’s after you?” I whispered, worried he’d brought trouble to my door.

“A few lads from the McCarthy gang. They’ve been trying to recruit me. I told Tommy McCarthy to go fuck off and now they want to give me a hiding.”

“Shite,” I breathed.

The knocking came closer. Whoever it was reached the flat next to mine and hammered on the door. I held still, barely breathing. My eyes traced Dylan’s face, his dark blue eyes, masculine jaw, and gruff expression. He wore grey jeans, black boots and a navy padded jacket. His sandy hair was somewhere in between blond and brown, and it had a slight curl to it. It was clipped short, so the curl didn’t have much room to . . . be curly.

He was very attractive, but that didn’t take away from the fact that he’d basically broken into my home. When my neighbour came out and started talking to the lads who were looking for Dylan, I whispered, “Why did you come here to hide?”

He made a thoughtful expression, his brow furrowing in a way that made him look like a grumpy bear. “What?”

“You could’ve gone into any flat, why this one?”

There was a beat of silece, then finally he whispered back, “Because you’re the only person on this row who wouldn’t feed me to the wolves.”

I arched a brow. “You don’t know that.”

You don’t know me.

Before he had a chance to reply, the banging started on my door. My chest seized, clutched by fear, because I knew the type of blokes who were out there.

Poor. Hard. Brutal.

Suddenly, Dylan was on me again, his hand on my mouth, his body holding mine in place. This time I didn’t struggle, instead I held still and stayed quiet. A shiver trickled down my spine at his closeness. I wasn’t often this close to people I hardly knew.

“Answer the bleedin’ door,” a male voice shouted. “Or I’ll knock it the fuck down.”

“Maybe I should answer and tell them you’re not here,” I whispered against his fingers.

He glanced down at me, probably because my lips were on his skin. He tilted his head, like he found it in some way interesting, then said, “No, they’ll come in and ransack the place.”

I let out an anxious breath. He was right. And I couldn’t do that to Yvonne. I couldn’t have her come home from her shift at the bar to a wrecked flat.

More banging ensued. I startled when a head appeared at the window, though thankfully Yvonne’s net curtains shielded us from view.

“He’s not in there,” someone said. “He probably ran down to the Willows.”

The Willows was a dilapidated block of flats about five minutes away. It was where people went to drink and do drugs. If you were homeless, it was where you went to sleep.

“Come on,” the same person said and the guy peering in the window disappeared. Dylan let go of me, took three strides across the room and looked out through the curtains.

“They’re gone,” he said and exhaled, his shoulders slumping in relief.

“Yes, now you should go, too,” I said, on guard again. I felt on edge having a strange boy in my flat who I’d never even spoken to before. Though ‘boy’ wasn’t exactly the right term. Dylan was probably about a year older than me, eighteen maybe, but he was built like a man. Soon his shoulders would get even broader, his features more defined. He’d be a sight to be reckoned with then, I was sure.

He turned back to look at me, one eyebrow arching as he stared me down. He didn’t do anything for a long moment and then his attention moved about the living room. His tension faded, and something like fondness, or maybe amusement, took its place.

“Big fan of New York?” he asked wryly, taking in all the posters and memorabilia.

I cleared my throat. “No, my aunt Yvonne is. She saw When Harry Met Sally and became obsessed. She’s saving up to move there in a couple years.”

Dylan’s mouth formed an attractive, thoughtful line. “And what about you?”

“What about me?”

“Will you go with her?”

I shrugged. “I don’t think so. Probably not. My grandma lives in the retirement home in Broadstone. We’re all she has. I couldn’t leave her.”

Dylan took this in, his dark eyes softening, then stepped to the front door. “Thanks for letting me hide here. I owe you one,” he said, ducking his head to make sure the coast was clear.

“Sure,” I said, not knowing what else to say.

He looked back at me one last time. “See ya, Evelyn.” And then he was gone.

***

“I’m sorry, but I’d sell my own mother for a night with Jared Leto, no question,” said Sam as we walked to English on Monday.

“Are we talking 30 Seconds to Mars Jared Leto or Jordan Catalano Jared?” I asked. “Because those are two entirely different kettles of fish.”

30 Seconds, of course. You know I can’t resist a man in eyeliner,” he said then winked. We reached our lockers when a familiar head of sandy brown hair emerged from the crowd.

Dylan.

He must’ve sensed my attention, because his eyes flashed to mine. I sucked in a harsh breath at the sight of him. He had a purple bruise beneath one eye, and there were various other cuts and grazes all over his face. Jesus.

Sam followed where I was looking and made a crass comment. “Looks like Dylan O’Dea likes it rough.”

So it was O’Dea.

“I think he got that beating on the streets, not in the sheets,” I said, chewing worriedly on my lip. Those McCarthy fellas must’ve caught up to him yesterday.

“Good one.” Sam chuckled, but I didn’t share his humour.

A pang of concern hit me square in the chest and I moved toward him automatically, leaving Sam by his locker. Dylan saw me approach and stopped in place, his attention skittering over me. He hitched his bag up on his shoulder and let out a gruff breath. “What?” he asked.

“They got you, didn’t they?”

He shifted from foot to foot, seeming uncomfortable with my concern. “Nah, walked into a wall.”

“Don’t be cute.”

Another sigh. “Yeah. They got me, blondie. Probably better to get it over with anyway. Now maybe they’ll leave me alone.”

I nodded slowly, not sure how to react to his endearment. It wasn’t very original, but it still made my breastplate tingle. “You think?”

“I hope, but who knows.”

“Have any teachers asked about your bruises?”

He gave me an incredulous look. “Where do you think we are? Nobody gives a shit here.”

I hated that he was right. The teachers at this school were either too mean or too downtrodden to care about students’ home lives. In a way, I didn’t blame them. Even the nice teachers eventually got so sick of being bullied and verbally abused that they shut off all their emotions. This wasn’t a soft place to grow up, but I liked to think I still had a heart.

I didn’t think before I said my next words. “Well, I give a shit.”

He narrowed his eyes in suspicion. “Why?”

“Because I’m not an unfeeling rock, that’s why.”

Dylan stared off over my head and shoved his hands in his pockets. “You probably should be,” he said, then walked by me and disappeared back into the crowd.

Huh.

“Oh blondie, get your bum over here,” Sam crooned, and I turned back to my friend.

“What?” I asked.

“I didn’t know you and Dylan O’Dea were acquainted.”

I frowned. “We’re not. Not really.”

He folded his arms and pursed his lips. “Sure sounded like you are.”

“He was being chased by some blokes who wanted to beat him yesterday and I let him hide in my flat. That’s it.”

“Oooh, racy. Did he happen to hide in your bedroom by any chance? And did you share a sexy moment once the coast was clear? How did he express his gratitude?”

Trust Sam to turn everything into some sort of risqué soap opera. Although thinking about it, the way Dylan held his hand over my mouth did give me a flutter in my belly.

“He told me he owed me one,” I replied with a shrug. Sam’s eyes glittered.

“That means he owes you a good rogering.”

“Sam!”

“What?”

“Don’t be disgusting.”

“Nothing disgusting about sex with a fella like that, Ev. Besides, you need to lose that flower of yours before it shrivels up and dies.”

I scrunched my face. “Please don’t call it a flower. And anyway, I’m not the only one who needs to lose it, so you can quit talking like you know it all.”

He gave me a sassy look. “If I were as straight and as pretty as you are, I’d have lost it years ago. It’s not exactly easy to find gays in this neck of the woods.”

“Not easy to find gays who are out, you mean. Just wait for the next person who throws some homophobic slur at you and there’s a good chance he’s in the closet.”

“Hmm, I do get a hint of an angry sex vibe from Shane Huntley sometimes. Maybe you’re onto something.”

Speak of the devil. A few seconds after Sam mentioned him, Shane walked by with his ever-present posse of arseholes, usual sneer in place. I wondered why the meanest kids always seemed to have the most friends. I didn’t have a mean bone in my body and the only real friend I had was Sam. Shane walked on, not acknowledging us aside from his sneering expression, and I turned to neaten up my locker.

“I found a book on Freud in Yvonne’s collection,” I told him. “He had this theory that when we see the things we dislike in ourselves in others, we hate on it.”

“Hmm,” said Sam. “Could be some truth to it. But anyway, back to the luscious Mr O’Dea, when are you going to cash in on that debt?”

I chuckled. “Not sure. Maybe the next time I need some help moving furniture. The boy’s got some serious shoulders on him.”

“All the better for throwing you around the bedroom with.”

I shot him an irritable glance. “You’re not going to quit with this, are you?”

His answering wink was pure devilment. “Not in this lifetime, blondie.”

How the Light Gets in

He came back to me 16 minutes and 59 seconds into Beethoven’s Symphony no. 7.

We parted amid tragedy, so it seemed poetic. Dylan O’Dea, my childhood sweetheart, had once meant everything to me. Now we were strangers, and honestly, after eleven years I never thought

I’d see him again.

I lived in the world of the average, of getting paid by the hour and budgeting to make ends meet. But Dylan, he lived in the world of wealth and success. He’d achieved the great things I always suspected he would. The dissatisfaction he’d felt as a teenager had obviously been an excellent motivator.

He started a business from scratch, pioneered a brand, and created perfumes adored by women across the globe. I was just one of the people who’d been there before. Now he was living his best life in the after.

And me, well, I’d been in a dark place for a while. Slowly but surely, I was letting the light back in, but there was something missing. I was an unfinished sentence with an ellipsis at the end. And maybe, if I was brave enough to take the chance, Dylan could be my happy ending.

How the Light Gets In is Book #2 and the concluding installment in L.H. Cosway’s Cracks duet.

For now.”

RELEASE DAY BLITZ: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: TAMING HIM by Kennedy Fox

Title: Taming Him
Series: Bishop Brothers
Author: Kennedy Fox
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Trope: Vacation Romance
Photographer: Wander Augular
Model: Zac Aynsley
Designer: RBA Designs
Release Date: January 30, 2018
*Each Bishop Brothers novel is an interconnected standalone*

Alex Bishop is your typical cowboy.
Charming, sexy, and wears a panty-melting smirk.
Working on the ranch helped build his solid eight-pack and smoking body. He’s every girl’s wet fantasy and he knows it too. Alex doesn’t follow the rules of your typical playboy bachelor. After wining and dining his dates and giving them the best night of their lives, he always sends flowers and calls the next day—even if it’s to say, let’s just be friends. His mama taught him manners after all and his southern blood knows how to be a gentleman. Still, that isn’t enough to tame the wildest of the Bishop brothers.

River Lancaster has finally met the man of her dreams. Too bad after six months of romantic bliss, she finds out he’s married. With a broken heart and blind rage, she books herself a ticket to Key West, Florida. Tired of cheaters and liars, she’s set on escaping to forget he ever existed. Who needs a man when there’s an all-you-can-drink margarita bar, anyway? That’s what she tells herself until she bumps into the right guy who can make all those bad memories disappear.
Even if it’s only temporarily.

Two weeks on the beach is what they both need. No strings attached, no expectations, no broken hearts. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll change the entire course of their lives in just nine short months.

**A complete standalone contemporary romance with a little southern drama**

I adore cowboy romance stories, which is a bit odd since I am definitely NOT the roughin’ it kind of girl, but there’s just something about these rough and rowdy gents that check off all of my swoon worthy buttons, and let me tell you, Kennedy Fox’s Bishop brothers have the southern charm, stellar physique, and smooth moves and talk that will melt any woman’s panties and perhaps even her heart!

Taming Him is the youngest Bishop’s sibling story, but even though Alex is the baby of the family, his way with the ladies and his gentlemanly nature is anything but innocent, and while Alex is all about the one-night stand, he’s never met anyone quite like River Lancaster, and the two weeks they spend together makes it impossible for either of them to move on, especially when they reconnect and discover just how strong their feelings are as they try to figure out what their post vacation relationship can possibly be.

I’m all about series that center around a highly entertaining, full of antics family, and readers will find that with the Bishop clan. And while Alex and River are front and center in the storyline of Taming Him, each member of his family plays a role in helping Alex and River work through their fears, their doubts, and their insecurities while also giving readers quite the laughable moments amidst the angst and drama. I would gladly be adopted in to this family because I’m sure there would never be a dull moment.

Readers will definitely swoon over these Bishop brothers and while I did feel like Taming Him ran a bit long in terms of moving the plot forward and I found myself skimming parts that sounded a bit repetitive, I enjoyed Alex and River’s story…its angst…the complications that arise…and the steamy scenes that prove the crazy amount of chemistry between them.

Evan Bishop’s story is up next, and I can’t wait for Kennedy Fox to shed light on his back story and find the perfect heroine for this sexy cowboy!

Excerpt

Preoccupied with a text on my phone from my agent, I walk into the kitchen and suck in a breath when I come face to back with Grady. He’s standing with his hand on the refrigerator door, head leaned inside, and his back fully exposed to me. It’s broad and strong and scarred immeasurably.

I stare.

I can’t help it. The marks are a dizzying array of dark and light and ridged and smooth. And they’re undeniably burns. Goosebumps chase over my skin as I imagine the pain he must have endured when he got those. I think of his habit of wearing unbuttoned shirts but never going shirtless and the hint of scars just visible above his collar that I never could have imagined led to this roadmap to hell on his back.

A part of me instinctively wants to reach out to touch them, bring some kind of comfort. It sounds ridiculous, even to me, but that doesn’t abate the urge.

“Not pretty, huh? Get a good look while you can.” His voice is gruff as his spine stiffens and body stills, emotion woven through the words.

“Thank God not all of you is pretty. I was beginning to feel majorly insecure having to live with perfection like you,” I say off the cuff, trying to make this situation less awkward. My attempt to settle the sudden tension sparking in the air around us.

“Perfection?” he asks as he turns to face me with a smile that masks the emotion swirling in his eyes.

“Yeah. You have scars. I have mermaid thighs.”

“Mermaid thighs?” He laughs. “What in the world are you talking about?”

“Thighs that touch from the top all the way to my knees.” I shrug as if it doesn’t bug me, as if I’m not highlighting one of the insults Tara threw at me. It’s a whole lot easier to make fun of myself so long as it puts him at ease.

“Do you ever give yourself a break?”

Do you?” I ask the question, sparking a silent battle of wills as we stare at each other and wonder what to say next about the other’s insecurities. Coming up empty, I shift gears. “I think there is some type of rule about how many abs are fair for a guy to have when the rest of us are just struggling to find one of them.”

His smile rings more genuine as he steps toward me, and I step back, my hips leaning against the counter now.

“Is that so?” His voice lowers as his eyes flick to my lips and then back up. “I’m sure you have some under your shirt there.”

Why does the simple action make it seem so hard to swallow?

He takes another step.

“What are you building outside?”

“A playroom.”

A nervous chuckle falls from my lips as I think of all of the versions of playrooms I’ve read about in my romance books. My cheeks stain red as I imagine Grady with a flogger in one hand standing beside a St. Andrew’s Cross.

“A playroom?”

“Yeah.” He takes a step closer so we’re breathing the same air, his voice husky enough to cause every part of my body to grow alert. “A playroom. You know . . . a pool table. Foosball. A real man cave.”

I exhale a shaky sigh, suddenly more than aware that he’s so close, shirtless, sweaty, and smelling like sun and soap mixed together. But it’s his eyes that make my thoughts falter. There’s an intensity to them I don’t expect from the perpetually cheerful Grady Malone.

“Ah, that kind of playroom . . .” But my words trail off as he steps even closer and braces his hands on the counter on either side of me. I can hear his intake of breath. The music floating in from outside. The pound of my pulse in my ears.

“Hey, Dyl?”

“Yes?” Our eyes hold, my lips fall lax.

“I need you to open up.”

What?” I question as his hand brushes against my hip and his fingers pull on the drawer handle I’m standing in front of.

“I need the bottle opener. You’re standing in front of the drawer it’s in.” His lips spread into a full-fledged grin as I scramble away from the counter and, of course, run smack dab into the hardness, all six foot plus of him.

And then I rebound off him again in a flustered state that has him laughing and me stuttering. “Sorry. I wasn’t-I didn’t . . .” His arms hold on to my biceps to steady me, which prompts me to look up and meet his eyes.

“We need to stop meeting like this,” he murmurs, the heat of his breath hitting my lips.

“We do.” Brilliant, Dylan. Freaking brilliant response. “I’ve gotta . . . I’ve gotta get back to . . . to writing.”
