Do you get up every morning, spend close to an hour or more getting ready, pick out the perfect outfit, make sure your makeup is suitable, then style your hair just so? Do you slip your feet into your favorite heels, lock your modest one-bedroom apartment, climb into your practical car? Do you drive twenty minutes to downtown, find a spot in the company parking garage?

If you do, then you’re very much like me.

However, I think our stories will differ significantly once you get to your office and I get to mine.

Sure, it’s possible you work in a high-rise office building in the heart of downtown. It could be any downtown office in any big city, in fact. New York, Chicago, Dallas. The location doesn’t matter. It’s even feasible to think that you’re a secretary for a multi-billion-dollar PR firm. You could even have four bosses like I do. Four mouth-watering, malebosses, even.

But, like I said, at that point, our stories will likely be drastically different.

Having spent the last two and a half months with my bosses, the thought of spending the holidays alone isn’t ideal. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what I feared I would be doing.
Or so I thought.

I probably should’ve learned long ago not to underestimate the men I work for.

Review

Ethan Everest…his name alone seems to resonate strength and control and despite the ordeal he must endure for trusting the wrong people, he is a commanding presence in the business world, keeping everything close to the vest and fighting back against his enemies who were once friends. But as proactive as Everest is when it comes to his professional life, his personal life is a mess, so his hot and cold demeanor when it comes to Singer Davis makes sense, but it also frustrated the heck out of me because his mixed signals could cost him a second chance with the woman who should have been his first choice. 

I have to admit that I was a bit flustered by the first half of the book. I didn’t understand why Ethan made the decisions he did because based on his internal musings and even his dialogue with his friend, Singer was the woman he was drawn to…the one he imagined being with…the one he felt an instant connection to, so for him to not follow through when he had the opportunity to do so and then left and started a relationship with someone else despite his chemistry with Singer didn’t mesh well with his words. And, I didn’t feel like readers were truly given the reasons behind his choices because when Ethan and Singer reconnect, the drama in his life isn’t discussed for quite some time and there’s no indication as to why he walked away from Singer and never really looked back until he couldn’t give her anything more but friendship.

Singer Davis is a sweetheart of a girl, but she wears her heart on her sleeve and loves with every part of herself, which leaves her vulnerable, at times, especially when it comes to her feelings for Ethan. She felt their connection that very first encounter and even after a year apart, she still finds her heart beats faster when he’s around. The pseudo relationship that she and Ethan form is difficult for her to accept or to even understand, but her faith in what she feels for Ethan and what she believes he feels for her allows her to ride the confusion and wait for Ethan to let her in, in a way that he’ll never want her to leave.

The suspense aspect of the story doesn’t emerge until about 60% into the book and the way it plays out rattles both Ethan and Singer and forces them to face a cruel world that sometimes let’s the bad guys win even when the good guys try their best to prevent it.

Ethan and Singer’s journey is not an easy one; it’s filled with missed opportunities, life-changing moments, and a bevy of emotions that will either tear them apart or solidify a bond that started by simply seeing one another across a room. Ethan’s life is not ordinary, which means that being a part of it comes with a multitude of issues and readers witness both Ethan and Singer work through everything with determination, love, and trust, but getting to that point was not all hearts and flowers and that’s the reality of their love story that S.L. Scott presents to her readers.

Slipping off my shoes, I dim the lights on the wall panel. I take my clothes off and hang them on a hook near the door before returning to the tub.

   The tub, warm and inviting as I step in, eases my aching feet from my high heels and the tension in my shoulders. I pour some of the bubble suds and giggle. That was so cute and showed me a whole new side to Ethan—the at-home Texan who relates to his roots—instead of the strong, quieter, broodier man I see sometimes.

   While the suds foam and the tub fills, I look out the window. The sky is clear up here. The buildings are far enough apart to avoid spying on neighbors. It’s like floating in heaven.

   I hear his knock on the door, so I call, “Come in,” while making sure the bubbles cover all the important parts.

   Ethan walks in with two glasses of champagne in one hand and the bottle in the other.

   “You came prepared,” I note, leaning back on one side of the tub.

   “I thought I might join you.” He waggles his eyebrows.

   I giggle and reach for a glass. “Come on in,” I reply and wonder if he will really take me up on my dare.

   He sets the bottle and his glass down on the side of the tub. His tie was removed before he came in and I notice his shoes are long gone, along with his jacket. When he starts on the buttons of his shirt, I sit up, scooping suds over me. “Wait, for real?”

   “Yep. I think that tub’s big enough for the two of us.”

   “But you said you don’t take baths.”

   “I also said I’ve never used this one. Seems like an opportune time.”

   “But I’m naked,” I say, worried about everything—his body naked next to mine, not shaving my legs before I went out tonight. My mind flickers through my flaws. Ugh. No. Just no. Not like that. That stuff should be shared in the dark of a bedroom under the influence of alcohol and desperate sex. We’re too sober for this. I’m too sober for this. What does he possibly see in me when he has women like Nicolina waiting?

   He’s more than I’ve imagined, and in some senses, it scares me. He’s the sort of man women like Nicolina land. For once though, it was as if she saw me as competition. The feeling is exhilarating.

   “Like I said, seems like an opportune time.”

   His shirt is dropped, his undershirt following quickly behind. Good God Almighty. What does a guy who looks like that see in me? “I see you like to work out.” I clear my throat and want to bonk my head on the side of the tub for saying it out loud.

   Chuckling, he says, “I have a gym down the hall. It’s how I relieve stress.”

   “I thought that’s what sex was for.” I gasp and cover my mouth, wishing I could keep my crazy thoughts in my head where they belong instead of on my tongue. His eyes are heavy, a smirky smirk restraining a laugh. “God, you cannot let me talk when I’m nervous.”

   “If this is what happens when you’re nervous, I’ll make you nervous more often.” His pants come down and my curiosity is answered. Tonight he’s in boxers. When he catches my eyes on his package, I’m thankful I’m wearing waterproof mascara because I immediately go underwater. Screw my makeup. It’s really the only way to keep my mouth in check at this point. I count to five and then pop back up. With my hands covering my boobs, I ask, “You’re really coming in?”

   “Yes, scoot over.”

   Good God Almighty.

Review

In Hero, Caine and Alexa’s book, Henry Lexington’s supporting role as Caine’s playboy best friend and perpetual high society flirt made the story that much more enjoyable because Henry was as adorable as he was sexy and he definitely knew how to get under Caine’s skin, especially when it came to Caine’s leading lady or Henry’s inability to not woo Alexa during every encounter simply because he can.

I think knowing Henry’s background and understanding the type of lifestyle that he’s required to live as well as the type of relationships he’s supposed to go after helped me to not get so riled up and agree with Nadia’s view that Henry didn’t have staying power when it came to his ‘apparent’ feelings for her and his desire to start a relationship with her. But I can’t say I wouldn’t be peeved if he kept up his charming antics for more than just me.

Nadia Ray is my kind of heroine…yes, she’s insecure about her body and has a crapload of baggage that prevents her from trusting men but as much as she feels powerless in certain situations that occur in the story, she demonstrates her strength and the fact that she’s learned from her past mistakes. She has every reason not to trust a single word Henry says to her…partly because of the horrendous way he treated her at the beginning of the story and partly because her insecurities get the better of her when he continues to charm every female he encounters.

Nadia’s a strong woman who doesn’t want others to see her vulnerabilities and use them against her, so she deflects and shields herself from those kinds of situations. She never anticipated Henry Lexington, Boston’s Most Eligible Bachelor, crashing into her life and persuading her to take risk after risk when it came to their ‘temporary’ relationship. But his honesty endears her to him and it gives her a chance to see who Henry is beneath social veneer, and everything about that man makes her crave something permanent with him, even if she thought she would never want a man again.

I adore Samantha Young’s storytelling; she allows her readers to understand every part of who her characters are, even if some of that knowledge is slowly revealed…that just adds to the intrigue and makes readers want to read the book in one sitting so all of our questions are answered. Nadia and Henry are complex characters who are much more than the facades they show to those around them and their depth definitely plays upon the idea of them being both good and bad…the hero/heroine and the villain, which ultimately leads readers to believe that everyone can play both parts in their lifetime but that doesn’t mean that one or the other completely defines their life.

Excerpt

“I need to apologize,” he said to my back as I hurried into my sitting room. My shoulders hunched to my neck at the words. I couldn’t look at him.

What did he want me to say? That it was okay?

Because it wasn’t.

No one, no matter what, should have to be subjected to what that woman said to me.

Henry’s mother!

He was in Cloud Cuckoo Land if he thought this, whatever this was between us, could ever work out when his mother thought so little of me.

“Just go,” I snapped, not looking at him.

“No,” he said, his tone stern. “Not until you turn around and look at me.”

I shot him a glare over my shoulder. “Satisfied? Now leave.”

Instead of leaving, he studied my face, softening as if he understood what was going on behind my fury.

But he didn’t understand.

“I cannot apologize enough for what my mother said to you. Frankly, right now I’m ashamed I share DNA with the woman. That was the reason I was avoiding her. She’s … bad with the women I date normally, even the ones she’s set me up with. No one is good enough. Usually, it’s merely irritating, but I didn’t want to subject you to her. And if I had known how goddamn low she’d sink tonight, I never would’ve put you in that situation.”

I heard his words, but I couldn’t feel them. I couldn’t feel the anger and worry in them that I’d later remember. In that moment, all I saw were the flowers peeking over the top of the trash can behind him. Flowers that had arrived at my apartment earlier that afternoon. Flowers that meant he’d found my home address. Flowers that taunted me, saying, “You can’t be angry at Penelope Lexington when you know she’d feel smug with satisfaction if she ever discovered the truth.” She’d feel vindicated in her opinion of me.

Worse would be how Henry would react if he knew the truth. How he’d never look at me the same way again. He’d never look at me in that way that was getting under my skin, becoming an addiction, despite all the defenses I’d tried to put up against him.

A chill shivered down my spine.

“Nadia, what can I do? What—”

“If you’re not going to leave,” I turned around to fully face him, “then we might as well get this over with.”

Henry watched with narrowed eyes as I threw my purse on the couch and then removed my earrings. “What are you doing?”

Cold, toneless, I reminded him, “Our arrangement is almost over. A deal is a deal.”

“A deal is a deal?” The muscle in his jaw twitched, his eyes flashing. “You’re going to fuck me like some martyr?”

“Well, I’d prefer it if you leave but I don’t welch on a deal.”

“Nadia, don’t hide from me.” I could hear the barely contained fury beneath his words and in a twisted way, I reveled in it. I wanted his anger. I wanted to force him to walk away and walk away for good. “Talk to me.”

I scoffed. “Why do you keep trying to make this more than it is? You wanted to slum it with the local weather girl. I wanted to get laid because it’s been a while. You just happened to be there and I’ve heard you’re good. That’s all this ever was. And I’m not one of your uptight society princesses who needs to be assured you want more from me than a dirty fuck.”

“Nadia …”

I didn’t heed the growl of warning in his voice. “Let me make it clearer,” I hissed out, all my rage at myself redirected at him like I knew and feared would happen. “I don’t do relationships with spoiled rich boys who run away from their mommas. I’ll let a rich boy fuck me for the hell of it, but rest assured when I do let someone in long-term, it’ll be a man.”

Not even a second later, Henry crossed the distance between us, one hand tangling into my pinned-up hair, the other around my waist. He yanked me roughly against him before I could blink and slammed his mouth down over mine in a hard, punishing kiss.
