Enough – such a simple sounding word, but boy does its impact pack a punch. And in Gena Showalter’s newest release, Can’t Get Enough, Brock Hudson and Lyndie ‘Scottie’ Scott both have to overcome feelings of insecurity and worthlessness due to the actions of the people who are supposed to love them most, and those tormented emotions lead one to go after meaningless encounters with women because another person’s hatred is too much for him to bear, and the other lives in fear, reliving her horrifying ordeals while struggling to move on and be the independent woman she envisions herself being now that she’s decided to take back her life and be on her own.

Boy did these two main characters break my heart…both Brock and Lyndie have craptastic pasts – ones that have severely scarred them emotionally as well as physically and while at times, they wear their scars like badges of courage and strength; sometimes, those wounds take a long time to heal and it’s only with patience and facing those monsters that they can begin to truly heal.

The circumstances that prompt Brock to finally give into his desire and perhaps even need for Lyndie adds quite a bit of pressure to two people who already have a lot of hang-ups when it comes to the opposite sex, but it makes sense that Showalter would need to create an unusual opportunity to bring them together because they were both adamant that nothing would come of their mutual lust for one another, partly due to Lyndie witnessing Brock’s manwhorish ways and partly because Lyndie is hellbent on being on her own, not needing a man to fulfill her life, especially one that seems to use women for nothing but a sexual release.

The progression of Brock and Lyndie’s relationship is not exactly forwarding moving; there is a lot for them to wade through when it comes to how they view themselves and their needs and what they feel they can give to the other person, and that entire process is a huge obstacle for them because neither seem too willing to fully commit, even if it is just for a few months. But each risk Brock and Lyndie willingly takes brings them closer to each other, changing them in ways they never thought possible as well as offering them a new path to travel when it comes to their relationship choices and what they feel their role should be when it comes to a monogamous partnership.

Even though Brock and Lyndie’s story is book 6 in The Original Heartbreakers series, I didn’t feel like I needed to understand past relationships in order to remain interested in the events of Can’t Get Enough, although I would have liked to hear more about Brock’s strained relationship with his brother and how their fractured connection was being rebuilt towards the end of the story. Lambert is another character whose presence I didn’t quite understand. I get that he was a way for Brock to prove that he would protect Lyndie with his life, but there was already so much for this couple to get through that I didn’t think the ‘stalker’ story line needed to be there.

Despite a few issues, though, I enjoyed Brock and Lyndie and even though they frustrated me with their inability to communicate their true wants and needs, I understood why they were both so closed off and I knew it would take time for them to feel comfortable enough to let go and just be with one another, so their hesitancies and missteps made perfect sense to me, but once they both realized that they were enough just the way they were and embraced that idea as well as their feelings, I knew this two would never want to part because being together made them complete in ways they never thought possible.

“But… marriage? ”Lyndie asked. “I promised myself I’d never do the whole legal-ties thing again.” Straight white teeth nibbled on her bottom lip. “How long would our marriage last?”

“I don’t know exactly.” Anticipation blended with excitement, driving Brock mad in the best possible way. So close to victory! “I’ll need to find the employees of the Hud and Son Group new jobs before I dismantle the company. There will be no collateral damage on my watch.” The employees were innocent, and he wouldn’t leave them in the lurch. “If I had to guess, I’d say a month. Maybe two, but not likely.”

His father’s will had two stipulations: Brock had to be married in order to run the business and, if he planned to continue running it, he had to remain married.

No Reservations…it’s amazing how many meanings as well as expectations those two words come with when it comes to the idea of relationships and interactions with the opposite sex.

At first, Chase MacKenzie and Maura Jenkins seem to treat a lack of reservations to mean that there’s nothing more than sexual compatibility between them…no need to make plans for romantic dinners or wooing opportunities because the only thing they want from one another is the amazing sex they can’t seem to get enough of…even if they both aren’t used to going back for more.

No Reservations is a great addition to Kristen Proby’s Fusion series. It’s almost like a spectator’s look into what makes Seduction such a successful restaurant and romantic place as well as what makes Mac fall in love and willingly seek out more with the woman who captured his body as well as his heart. Because Chase is Mac’s brother, readers get to catch up a bit with Mac and Kat as well as watch another MacKenzie be brought to his knees by a woman whose bickering ways he sees as foreplay and whose snark, humor, and passion overwhelmingly keep him coming back for more. Just as Chase and Maura become invested in one another, readers become invested in seeing just how long these two can dance around their feelings for each other and deny that there’s more to them than great sex because it’s pretty clear from the beginning that Portland’s biggest player is more than his sexual prowess and Maura’s witty piths are only a small fraction of what makes her so worth every frustrating and spellbinding moment Chase spends with her.

“I don’t love blind dates,” I remind my friend Kat for the fourth time since she picked me up at my place twenty minutes ago. “You really didn’t have to set me up with anyone.”

“I think you’ll like him,” she says with a shrug.

“Why are we meeting them there?”

“Because Mac just finished up with work, and having him come home to get me and then go back downtown seemed unproductive.”

I nod and take a deep breath. It’s not that men as a species make me nervous. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever met a man that gave me butterflies, which I guess is a sad commentary on the state of my love life.

“You do like men, don’t you?” she asks with a raised brow and glances over at me. Kat is one of the most colorful women I know. She has deep red hair, a full sleeve of beautiful tattoos, and the outfits she wears should land her on the cover of a pin-up girl calendar. She’s super pretty.

“Yes,” I reply with a laugh. “I’m into men.”

“Perfect.” Kat smiles and pulls into a parking space at a trendy sushi restaurant near the waterfront. “And there’s no pressure. If you don’t like him, no harm done.”

“True.” I nod and exit the car, meeting her on the sidewalk. “If nothing else, I get to spend some fun time out with you and Mac.”

“Atta girl,” she says with a wink and opens the door for me, following me into the restaurant. I immediately see Kat’s husband, Mac, sitting at a table in the back of the restaurant. His friend’s back is to me, but it looks familiar.

When Mac stands with a smile to kiss his wife like he hasn’t seen her in a month, his companion stands and turns around with a smile, and all I can think is, f*ck.
