About REBEL

She’s Penna Carstairs.

The Renegade they call Rebel.

FMX-treme Magazine’s sexiest female athlete of the year.

There’s no rule in extreme sports she hasn’t broken,

No gender barrier she hasn’t demolished.

She’s the woman I met in a bar in Vegas.

The woman I illegally BASE jumped for.

The woman I spent one insane, incredible night with.

But now I’m screwed.

Or rather…not screwed.

Because the woman I can’t get out of my head is the one woman I can never touch again.

I’m Dr. Cruz Delgado—the youngest professor on this campus,

And Penelope Carstairs just walked into my class.

Review

Rebel’s story is the one I’ve been waiting for ever since I was introduced to her in Wilder; there’s just something about a kickass woman who can hold her own and then some in a male dominated environment, and as an extreme sports athlete, Penna Carstairs has made one hell of a name for herself as one of the original Renegades, diving in headfirst regardless of the danger and pushing the envelope as far as it will go.

But at the end of Nova/the beginning of Rebel, there’s more broken parts of Penna than just her leg, and as she works to try and figure out if she still fits the role she created with Pax and Landon by her side, Penna finds herself taking a different kind of risk – one that could break her in ways she never imagined because she’s never felt anything like what Cruz Delgado made her feel in one night and continues to make her feel even when it crosses a line neither of them should be crossing.

Rebecca Yarros does an AMAZING job of illustrating the many layers and demeanors that make Rebel who she is. Since her accident, she’s lost a bit of her inner rebel, which has forced doubts and insecurity to take up space in her head. Rebel is the facade that the world sees – the fearless woman whose ego never waivers. Adventure and recklessness is what ignites Rebel and it’s what her fans expect from her during every stunt and every interaction on the worldwide trip she and the Renegades are using as their EXTREME playground. Beneath her Rebel veneer is Penna – the good time girl who’s always smiling and living life to the fullest. Penna is her default persona, and it’s the one she feels most comfortable in, especially now, when she second guesses her position as a Renegade. At Rebel’s core is Penelope – the fragile and complex girl who tries to hide her pain with fake smiles and bravado. This is the part of her that she rarely allows people to see because it reveals too much about her true nature, so the fact that that’s the layer that Cruz easily recognizes proves how in tune he is with this complicated woman, even when it’s in his best interest to see only what Rebel shows to everyone else because anything more than that places them both in a dangerous position.

Cruz Delgado may not be the daredevil he once was, but there’s not much that the Renegades do that he couldn’t match or at least attempt with little difficulty. But that’s not who Cruz is now and he’s spent the last 8 years of his life singularly focused on one mission, so the fact that he feels more than a physical connection to a girl he barely knows throws him off balance and makes him reassess exactly what he’s willing to give up in order to accomplish the one thing that’s always dominated his every action.

Penna and Cruz’s chemistry is evident from their very first interaction, but even though they met one another before embarking on the Athena, it’s clear that his role as professor and her role as his student does not allow them to finish what they started in Las Vegas. Yarros does a great job illustrating just how conflicted both Penna and Cruz are once they realize one another is off-limits, and while it’s clear that Cruz wants to do what’s right because he’s teaching on a cruise ship for a very particular reason, what Penna offers him is something he can’t relinquish because everything she feels for him, he feels as well, so while there’s a huge risk every time they cross their predetermined boundaries, the undeniable bond that formed in a short amount of time becomes something that they both desperately need to live and breathe, even if the outcome of their inappropriate relationship destroys more than just Cruz’s teaching career.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Yarros’ Renegades series. Each of the three stories teaches the characters and its readers that sometimes taking risks is worth the fallout…that sometimes being alive means working past one’s fears and accomplishing feats that would never have even been attempted without the opportunities that lie before them. And while the Renegades definitely put their lives on the line with each stunt that they attempt to master, what’s also clear is that they attempt to live life fully, experiencing everything it has to offer and never holding back when things seem too risky or too difficult. Dylan Thomas would definitely see Penna, Pax, and Landon raging ‘against the dying of the light,’ and while they don’t expect everyone to follow their lead, they do expect everyone to make the choice making their lives everything they’ve ever wanted them to be.

Excerpt

“Oh God, don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

That.” He pointed toward my mouth. “Everything I told you in Vegas is still true. You’re still gorgeous, still sexy as hell, still everything that draws me in like a damned magnet, but you’re also everything I can’t have. Don’t you get that? When you pull shit like that on the dance floor, you successfully drive me batshit crazy, watching you in some guy’s arms.” A small laugh escaped him. “Like that kid has any idea what to do with you if he actually managed to catch you.”

“And you do?”

His eyes darkened. “Don’t challenge me like that.”

The tension stretched between us for a quiet moment until I broke the silence. “I didn’t kiss him.”

“I’m well aware, because if you had, I’m not sure if I could have let him walk out of here, and that’s dangerous, Penelope. You are dangerous to me.”

“I’m sorry,” I said truthfully. “Logically, I know nothing can happen between us. I get it. But I see you, and all I can think about is the way you kissed me in Vegas. The way you touched me. I can’t just erase those memories, Cruz. Like I said, somehow you make me do stupid things.”

“You? I make you do stupid things?” he nearly yelled, and I was thankful for the loud, driving beat of the music beyond the office doors. “Woman, I got into a strange car for you. Illegally BASE jumped off a Ferris wheel to stay close to you. Went to jail for you, and I make you do stupid things?”

He stalked forward, his movements smooth like a predator, and a low hum filled my stomach, growing stronger with every step he took.

“I let you stay in my class. Stupid. I look for every reason to run into you, while simultaneously praying you’ll stay far away because I need this job. Stupid. I take one look at you in that fucking dress, and I’m so hard I’m afraid I can’t hide it in a room full of students. Stupid. I can’t stop thinking about the way you taste, the way you open up under me, the way your nails left little half-moons in my shoulders when I found how wet you were for me.”

If he got his hands anywhere near me, he’d find out I was just as wet now. God, his words were the biggest turn-on I’d ever experienced. Next to his abs. Or his arms. Or his mouth. Crap, the man was one giant sex package begging to be unwrapped.

“Cruz,” I whispered as he cupped my face with one hand, his thumb rubbing over my lower lip, while he caged me against the desk with the other.

My tongue licked across the tip of his finger, unable to help myself.

“God, Penelope. You could cost me everything, and yet I’m still in here with you. And this might be the worst choice of all.”

His mouth met mine in a kiss that sent my senses reeling. His tongue swept in, claiming every curve he might have missed last time, until it felt like my mouth belonged to him.

BLOG TOUR: REVIEW, TEASER, AND GIVEAWAY: Dr. NEURO by Max Monroe

Blurb

I’m Dr. Nick Raines.

Brain surgeon and notorious over-thinker, I take the analytical approach with everything, until I can determine the best, carefully calculated plan of action. It’s no shock the producers of the popular reality series The Doctor Is In have decided to call me Dr. Neurotic.

Besides my more than full-time job as Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Luke’s Hospital, I’m a single dad and my number one priority is my daughter.

But life had plans to add another priority to my list.

Charlotte Hollis. Outspoken, impulsive, and beautiful, she’s everything I didn’t know I was craving.

She makes me wonder What if?

What if I don’t have to be alone for the rest of my life to give my little girl the father she deserves?

It’s a battle—my battle: Head vs. Heart.

Review

Max Monroe chose the perfect doctor as the final story in their St. Luke’s Docuseries; readers who are familiar with Monroe’s fabulous Billionaire Bad Boys series know exactly who Dr. Nick Raines is and while our ill feelings for the brain surgeon are definitely valid due to his past mistakes and his black/white viewpoint that left Winnie Winslow as a single mom, Max Monroe does one hell of a job of transforming the good doctor into a man worthy of his daughter and worthy of a second chance from the people he’s let down the most.

Nick Raines is a changed man, and while some may say it’s too little too late, he’s worked his ass off to prove that his top priority is his daughter, Lexi, and he’s done it by being not only the father she needs but also the father she wants. Even if it took some time, he finally realized that financial security wouldn’t make him live a full life…wouldn’t make him feel like he meant something to someone…wouldn’t make his daughter light up due to being taken care of as opposed to truly being present in her life. And with that goal in mind, Nick has allowed himself very little ‘him’ time. His focus has been on his job, his patients, and his daughter, putting everything else, including any kind of a romantic relationship, out of his mind because he refuses to be distracted from what’s most important to him.

But Nick has never met someone as bewitching as Charlotte Hollis, and even though, she first meets with him to take him away from New York and away from his daughter, what Charlotte actually gives Nick is a chance to live a little…a chance to realize that he can have a life outside of the hospital…outside of his time with his daughter, and Charlotte helps Nick to learn that his head doesn’t always need to control his life…that rationally thinking sometimes isn’t the only choice, and while Nick may be a little slow on the take when it comes to these ideas, by the time the story ends, Nick has proven he deserves time with his daughter, has given up more than anyone knows in order to not break his promise to Lexi, and has turned into a man who has his priorities straight and would willingly do anything it takes to keep his daughter in his life.

Charlotte is the perfect woman to show Nick exactly what he’s been missing by living such a narrowed lifestyle…don’t get me wrong, Nick’s decision to focus solely on medicine and his daughter is what he needed to do when he first moved back to New York, but it’s been a few years, and he continues to step up like he should, so maybe it’s time to bring a little fun into his life, loosen him up a bit, and stop him from overthinking every single move and decision he makes. And, if anyone can handle that job, it’s definitely Charlotte because she seems to lead her life according to her heart way more than her head!

I have to mention Lexi in my review of Dr. Neuro because she was such a pivotal character in the story, not only because she’s Nick’s daughter but because her presence is awe-inspiring. Lexi has an absolutely brilliant mind and even though the way she views the world may be different than many other kids her age, I’d much rather live in her version because it’s pure, honest, and magical:)

I loved all three stories in the St. Luke’s Docuseries, but Nick and Charlotte’s story will stay with me the most because it proves that people can change…that they can realize what they did wrong and fight like hell to transform into who they need to be for the ones they love the most. I absolutely adore how Max Monroe handled Nick’s book and the steps they took to show their readers and those characters with ill feelings towards Nick an improved version of a highly intelligent and worthy man!

Tiny Teaser

With a quick smack and a groan, I silenced the alarm and rolled over to my stomach to shove my head into the fluff of my pillow.

“Oh my God,” I grumbled.

Even the sound of my own voice was grating.

Great, I thought. This should make work interesting.

I grabbed my phone off of my nightstand, rolled back onto my back, and typed out a quick message.

Me: So, apparently, you’re a sadist.

A reply popped up nearly immediately.

Charlotte: Wimp.

Me: I’m actually sore.

Charlotte: It takes time to acclimate to the dance life. You’ve got good moves, though. Be proud, soldier, be proud.

Me: Oh, so I suppose you’re completely fine?

Charlotte: Yep. 😉

Me: I kind of hate you.

Charlotte: That wears off. Trust me. Pretty soon you won’t be able to live without me.

Hands down, my favorite thing in the world is to score. Touchdowns.

Don’t let the fact that I’m the leading pick in the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction fool you. These days, I’m only a player on the field. I’ve kept my pants zipped all season long — and it has been long — because nothing’s more important than leading my team to victory every week. Except maybe escaping from the team owner’s recently-widowed and handsy-as-hell sister who’s dead set on winning more than a date with me.

Enter Violet and a well-placed Hail Mary.

She’s my best friend’s sister with a smile as sweet as cherry pie and a mind that runs quicker than the 40-yard-dash. After Violet saves the day with the highest bid, I don’t even give her a two-minute warning before I kiss her in front of the whole crowd and then announce that she’s my girlfriend. Which would be fine except my agent tells me we have to keep up the act while he’s negotiating my contract.
Violet takes one for the team and pretends to be mine, but our boyfriend-girlfriend scrimmage quickly turns into a full contact sport, and I want it to go into overtime. The problem is — I’ve been riding the bench for years.

How can a guy like me, who finally has a chance to prove his worth on the field, convince the girl she’s most valuable to his heart?

MOST VALUABLE PLAYBOY is a brand new standalone sports romance written in the guy’s POV!

Review

I love a great sports romance story, and boy does Lauren Blakely deliver with her latest release, Most Valuable Playboy. And while the premise of the story is one readers encounter a lot in this genre, the way that Blakely delivers Cooper and Violet’s story, building on their shared history and showcasing how easily their faux relationship transitions to something more…something perhaps that can make Cooper’s love for football the back-up to his love for his woman!

Blakely’s portrayal of the new and improved Cooper Armstrong, the quarterback and leader of the Renegades, aptly illustrates how seriously he takes his job and what he’s willing to do to prove that a winning season and post-season shot is his main focus. Cooper acknowledges how much of a playboy he was when it came to ‘dating,’ but now that he’s the one taking the snaps and helping his team to win, the player he was, off the field, has no role in his current life, and even though that decision may have occurred due to a pact with his team and their superstitious ways, it also gives Cooper a shot at the one girl who’s always supported him and who willingly helps him out when his life audibles in a way he doesn’t know how to play.

Violet Pierson may be Cooper’s best friend’s little sister, but she’s so much more than that, and it’s clear, early on, that Cooper is more than aware of Violet’s stellar characteristics. Violet and Cooper have always been friends, but when Violet comes through for Cooper, in a big way, it’s the perfect scenario for the pair to come up with a new playbook for what they mean to one another, even if neither of them are quite sure exactly what the other one feels.

Violet is such a spirited and good-natured heroine. I adored her quirky jokes, adorable texts, and easy going personality. There is absolutely nothing fake about who Violet is and I think that’s exactly why Cooper finds his feelings for her steadily growing, even when he’s not supposed to feel anything for her but friendship. Violet helps Cooper to lighten up a bit and to see that he can be more than married to to a game.

Lauren Blakely’s Most Valuable Playboy is a light-hearted, feel good, sweet, and swoon worthy read that will have readers cheering just as loud for the San Francisco Renegades to go as far as they can in the post season as they do for Cooper and Violet’s ‘fake’ relationship to be exactly what it actually seems to be from the start – real! I smiled and laughed out loud numerous times throughout the story because of the camaraderie and hijinks between Cooper and his teammates and the electric connection and authentic bond between Cooper and Violet. The way they tease one another and try to rile each other up allows readers to understand just how deep their feelings run and it’s crystal clear to us, even before it is to Cooper and Violet, that they cannot be anything but genuine when they’re together.

Excerpt

The business suit woman raises a hand, offering forty-one hundred.

Maxine’s eyes laser in on me, and she slashes an arm through the air. “Five thousand dollars,” she says, jacking the price up by nine hundred and staking her claim. I shudder inside.

The guy’s eyes widen, and he holds up his hands. “I’m out.”

My stomach plummets when the business woman shakes her head.

“Going once?” Sierra asks, scanning the tables, looking for perhaps one last big spender. My eyes scan the crowd, too. Hell, maybe I’ll find an escape hatch. A trapdoor to drop into and disappear like in a magic act. Maybe Trent will learn to read my mind. Trent, I’ll cover you for anything you bid. Just raise that hand, name a price, and save me.

My best friend’s expression is merely curious now as he watches Maxine and Sierra, waiting for the verdict. My opportunity to play yard boy slips through my fingers.

The look in Maxine’s eyes is pure satisfaction as she waits for the final word. She winks at me, as if we have a secret. Holy shit. She thinks I want this. She thinks I want her to win me.

A flash of chestnut brown hair in the back catches my attention. A flurry of silver. It’s Violet, hands in the air, wildly flapping over her head in the middle of the ballroom. She brings her finger to her nose. And she’s tapping it, like fucking Santa Claus coming down the chimney, and Harlan tapping his nose to signal his agent, and all the greatest solutions in the universe at once.

My heart goes crazy.

It hammers in my chest. This is like finding an open receiver a second before you’re sacked.

“Going twice,” Sierra says, trailing off as she waits.

I raise my arm and tap my nose, too. Violet is the only one who knows I need to get out of this jam. She’s the only one I mentioned it to. And she’s the only one now who can save me.

“Ten thousand dollars.”

Holy shit. Violet does not mess around with my money. Her eyes widen, as if she’s surprised she bid that high.

My gaze finds Trent. He’s staring at his sister, slack-jawed.

Sierra’s smile is bright and wide. “Ten thousand dollars. Do we have ten thousand, one hundred?”

The room is hushed. Maxine’s expression is blank. She must be shocked. She probably didn’t expect anyone to vie with her to this extent.

I tap my foot, willing Sierra to close this quickly. Just slam the door shut, please, fucking please.

“Going one. Going twice.”

I say a silent prayer. I cross my fingers. I hope.

Maxine blinks, opens her mouth, and I steel myself for a disgustingly high counter bid.

But there’s only silence. No words come. Violet has shocked her speechless. This type of bid wasn’t in Maxine’s playbook.

Sierra raises her arm. “And a night with the quarterback is sold for ten thousand dollars.”

Talk about a Hail Mary.

EXCERPT REVEAL: When We Touch by Tia Louise

SBPRBanner-WWT-ER

SNEAK PEEK  of When We Touch, an all-new sexy, second chance standalone from Tia Louise is coming September 5th!

5.25x8_Cream_300

Excerpt

Ember

Jackson Cane tastes like red-hot cinnamon, salt water, and sin.

When he concentrates, his long fingers twist in the back of his dark hair, right at the base of his neck, and he tugs.

Tugs… tugs…

I like to weave my fingers between his and pull.

Then ocean-blue eyes blink up to mine sending electricity humming in my veins. He smiles. I smile, and it isn’t long before our lips touch. I climb onto his lap in a straddle as I open my mouth, and his delicious tongue finds mine heating every part of my body. Our kisses are languid and deep, chasing and tasting. We sizzle like fireworks on a hot summer night…

Eventually, with a heavy sigh, I pull away, but hours later my mouth is still burning. I taste him everywhere I go.

Lying in my bed in the dark room, my heart aches, heavy and painful in my chest. Every breath is a burden. I blink slowly at the ceiling and slide my tongue against the back of my teeth thinking about hot cinnamon, tangy salt, caramel and sugar, sunshine and the best summer of my life…

The instant I hear it, I’m on my feet and tiptoeing to my open window. The low growl of an engine tells me he’s there in the darkness, out on the street in the shadows just past the streetlight.

It’s late summer, and the humidity hangs heavy in the air. Bugs scree from the limbs of the mighty oak tree outside my window. Their damp wings make them too heavy to fly, and the sadness in my chest is replaced with breathless anticipation.

I’m panting. I’ve never felt this way for anyone, and I’m desperate to hold onto it. I somehow I know I’ll never feel this way for anyone ever again.

Quiet as a mouse I scamper to my bedroom door and listen. The only sound is the hum of Mama’s oscillating fan pushing the warm air around her bedroom. I can’t hear her breathing. I can’t hear anything… except the noise of Jackson’s engine on the street below, waiting.

Red-hot cinnamon.

Salt water.

Sin.

Pressure tingles around the edges of my skull, and a bead of sweat tickles down the side of my neck, dropping past my shoulder, slipping between my breasts.

I’m at my window slowly lifting the glass, and I don’t care if she hears me. I dive through the space, out onto the cedar shake roof in my bare feet. I’ll get a splinter if I’m not careful…

So many reasons to be careful—I ignore them all.

EXCERPT REVEAL AND GIVEAWAY: In the Crease by Toni Aleo

Jensen Monroe is a unicorn. As handsome as any model, as polite as can be, a goalie of unmatched skill, and the best friend anyone could ask for. But he longs for a particular special someone to make his life complete. He’s been in love with Wren since he was a teenager, but as his best friend’s sister, she’s always been off-limits.

Wren Lemiere has prided herself on being a love ’em and leave ’em girl her whole life. She’s all about equal opportunity in the battle of the sexes. Why should guys like her brother and his best friends get to be the only ones allowed to play the dating game? One wrong move, however, and she finds herself in violation of her own rules.

In need of a fake husband and baby daddy for her unexpected bundle of joy, Wren finally accepts Jensen is the logical one to ask for help. Except he has a counteroffer…one with so many strings attached, they may just find themselves wrapped up in ties that bind. Forever.

Excerpt

Dr. Richards laughed as Wren giggled. “Everything is good. Come on up,” he said, helping Wren up before he patted her back. “But we need to discuss something.”

Her expression turned worried as she met his gaze. “Is everything okay?”

“Fine, but looking over your chart, you had quite the weight gain from last time. Fourteen pounds.”

Her face flushed as she held his gaze. “Baby weight?”

“Some, but not all. Healthy weight gain is about twenty pounds, and you’ve gained thirty.”

She shrugged. “Taco weight?”

He smiled, patting her back. “Are you exercising?”

She nodded. “I walk to the fridge?”

“I’ll take that as a no,” he said, marking his chart. Why did she feel like he was scolding her? “You need to get a little more active, and I’m sure your husband won’t mind doing that with you.”

Wren couldn’t look at Jensen, she was so embarrassed, but still, she said, “Of course.”

“And maybe instead of all the tacos, we have a taco salad?”

She glared. “You’re ruining my life, doctor guy.”

He smiled before he winked. “Just a suggestion.”

“Duly noted.”

“Good. So have a good trip,” he said with a grin before sliding out of the room with only a wave and “see ya next time.”

“Well, that sucked,” she muttered, scooting to the end of the table and getting off. Still unable to look at Jensen, she went to pull her shirt down, but she jumped in surprise when Jensen’s hands stopped her. When she looked up, he was staring at her, his eyes dark as he took her belly in his hands. Bending down, his very large body took up most of the room as he went to his knees before kissing her belly. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she watched him.

“Hey, you, we need to back off the tacos, okay?”

She laughed as he kissed her once more before standing and taking her face in his hands. “And you are fucking sexy, okay? Those numbers mean nothing, except that we’re going to go for walks in the mornings this whole trip.”

Her eyes started to cloud with tears as she nodded. “Okay.”

“Don’t let that bother you, okay?”

“Okay.”

“We’re good.”

She nodded. “We are.”

“And I like the name Liam.”

“Liam?” she asked as he slowly brought her shirt down over her belly. “I don’t know about Liam.”

“I like it, but can I tell you what I don’t like?”

Her brow rose. “What?”

“That doctor.”

She laughed. “What? He’s nice!”

“He’s too hot to be touching you, and I’m man enough to say that. We need to switch.”

She laughed hard, and he took her hand in his as she reached for her purse. “I know you’re not jealous.”

He gave her a dry look. “Beyond.”

“What! No, you’re not!”

“I am,” he admitted, shaking his head. “Does he stick his hands inside of you a lot?”

She sputtered. “Many times.”

“Bullshit. I hate him.”

“You’re silly!”

“I was boiling, sitting there as he touched you. I wanted to deck him.”

“You did not!”

“I did.”

“Like that would bother you.”

He set her with a look that swirled so much desire and the dirtiest thoughts imaginable inside of her. Pulling her against him, he looked deep into her eyes, his mouth barely away from hers as he whispered, “It bothers me just knowing that men look at you.”

“Jensen,” she gasped, her lips curving. “Stop lying to me.”

“I’m not. You’re mine, woman, and that’s that.”

RELEASE REVIEW: Deacon by Kit Rocha

The Blurb

Ana has trained most of her life to achieve one goal: to prove that anything men can do, she can do better. Now she’s Sector One’s first female Rider, and being the best is the only way to ensure she won’t be its last. Distractions aren’t allowed–especially not her painful attraction to the reserved but demanding leader whose stern, grumpy demeanor has already gotten into her head.

Deacon has spent the last twenty years trying to atone for his past, but the blood he spilled as a mercenary and assassin will never wash away entirely. If his Riders knew the extent of his sins, he’d lose their trust and respect. It’s easier to keep them all at arm’s length, especially Ana. But his newest recruit’s stubbornness is starting to crack his defenses.

And their sparring matches are driving him wild.

The passion sparking between them can’t be denied, but neither can the vengeance barreling toward Deacon. When his old squad comes back to punish him for his betrayal, Ana and the Riders are squarely in the line of fire. The only way to save his people may be to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But first, he has to convince Ana not to follow him straight into hell.

Review

Let me start by saying that I absolutely LOVE how Kit Rocha writes and develops her heroines. Each woman who has graced the pages of Rocha’s Beyond series and the more recently written Gideon’s Riders series is dynamic, in part, due to her ability to remain empathetic and compassionate even as the world around her explodes into chaos and darkness but also due to the fact that her ‘softness’ is maintained underneath a kickass exterior – one that is every bit as strong and even-tempered as her male counterpart. And, even though the second book in Gideon’s Riders uses the hero’s name as its title, Ana is every bit as essential to Gideon, to the other Riders, and to the people she protects as Deacon is.

The regimented way Gideon’s Riders live is what allows them to be effective as the protectors of Sector One and the traditions of the sector reinforce exactly the type of people who become these warriors and what that means not only for the ‘chosen’ but also for their families. Gideon is very much a traditionalist, but he also understands the need for progress and change, which, in my opinion, is the only reason Ana was allowed to become one of Gideon’s Riders. But even if Gideon is able to keep an open-mind and accept Ana into his fold, there will always be naysayers, those citizens watching and waiting for Ana to make a mistake so that the long held beliefs that women have no place fighting alongside men is validated and reestablished.

What these judgmental people don’t understand, though, is that Ana was made to be a Rider, not just because her father was one and trained her to follow in his footsteps, but due to her own merits as a human being as well as a skilled fighter. Despite her father and Gideon’s certainty that Ana’s true place is with the Riders, she can’t help but feel a significant amount of pressure, not only from the men who fight alongside her, but from young girls who may aspire to follow her lead and defy prescribed gender roles. And if that weight wasn’t enough for Ana to handle, she also has to endure constant scrutiny from the head Rider, Deacon, the very man who she has more than brotherly feelings for, even if Riders are not allowed long-term entanglements.

Deacon’s past is shrouded in darkness firstly because he feels that the sins of his past will force the other Riders to perceive him as a reprehensible and irredeemable man but also because Gideon believes that one’s character is the sum of all of his choices, and Deacon has spent twenty years making noble ones. But regardless of Deacon and Gideon’s respective feelings, the truth must come out, in part because the Riders must fight against the very group of mercenaries that Deacon was once a part of but also because a Rider becomes an idolized beacon for the masses when he takes on this role, even to the other Riders, and he fears that his reputation will be tarnished and that he will be unable to lead as he has done for the last two decades.

Kit Rocha delivers one hell of a story in Deacon and it’s one with several plot lines that all intersect at the story’s conclusion. Deacon’s sorted past, Ana’s self-doubt and emotional state when it comes to her feelings for Deacon, the Suicide King’s true mission, and the protection of Gideon and his loved ones are all factors responsible for determining the outcome of not only what Deacon and Ana mean to one another, but also to how the Riders choose to live and what the cost might be when someone is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the group when the group doesn’t want that to happen and will stop at nothing, even disobeying orders, to fight against what some might consider inevitable.

Deacon is yet another powerful text from the mind of Kit Rocha; Rocha does a fantastic job in continuing to build the world of Sector One while illustrating its differences to the other sectors and its main objectives after the war with Eden. There’s a pureness in Sector One that is not found anywhere else, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t felt the repercussions of the battle nor will it remain unscathed because there will always be someone or a group of people looking to tear down the powerful in order to secure that power for themselves.

And, with the promise of Ivan’s book coming up next, it will be interesting to see if his position as a Rider and as a man can co-exist when he’s put to the test by a certain Princess who knows her status does not allow her the outcomes she most certainly wants.

PROMO EVENT: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: A VEIL OF VINES by Tillie Cole

To most people, princes, princesses, counts and dukes are found only in the pages of the most famous of fairytales. Crowns, priceless jewels and gilded thrones belong only in childhood dreams.

But for some, these frivolous fancies are truth.

For some, they are real life.

On Manhattan’s Upper East Side, people have always treated me as someone special. All because of my ancestral name and legacy. All because of a connection I share to our home country’s most important family of all.

I am Caresa Acardi, the Duchessa di Parma. A blue blood of Italy. I was born to marry well. And now the marriage date is set.

I am to marry into House Savona. The family that would have been the royals had Italy not abolished the monarchy in 1946. But to the aristocrats of my home, the abolition means nothing at all.

The Savonas still hold power where it counts most.

In our tight-knit world of money, status and masked balls, they are everything and more.

And I am soon to become one of them.

I am soon to become Prince Zeno Savona’s wife…

… or at least I was, until I met Achille.

And everything changed.

Review

A story about modern day royalty and the obligations that come with being a member of an “exclusive, tight-knit world” – one that looks its nose down at those of lower social status and one that puts duty before love and traditions before heart is an intriguing one because it illustrates old world beliefs and the power that comes with being a blue blood as well as what that position costs those who, while being a part of the aristocracy, would much rather marry for love and passion than for business and securing family ties.

Tillie Cole is a masterful story teller; she writes in such a way that allows readers to truly understand each of her character’s wants and needs, and she easily conveys what her characters’ hearts deserve, even in one as quiet and introverted as Achille Marchesi. Achille’s is such a beautiful man who leads a solitary life by choice, but he also believes that’s the only way a man like him can live. He is not a man of wealth or title, but he is a passionate man – one who takes pride in his job as a wine maker and finds validation in his skills by how other praise the quality of his product.

Caresa Acardi may be the Duchessa di Parma, but she is nothing like what a stereotypical princess is believed to be. She’s kind and generous…hard working and honorable, and while she knows what is expected on her and tries to embrace her new life as the fiancee of Prince Zeno Savona, she can’t completely give herself over to her family duty because her heart yearns for more than just an arranged marriage with a man whose reputation as a playboy is more than just gossip.

The idea of soul mates is not a new concept, but the way Cole explains the theory of split-aparts and then uses her characters to demonstrate how heart warming and heart breaking that kind of connection can be makes it an awe inspiring experience, one that readers embrace due to Cole’s meticulous illustrations.

A Veil of Vines is an emotional journey for both Caresa and Achille as well as readers. There’s quite the history lesson explored in the story – one that reveals life changing secrets and one that puts the ideas of family, duty, and honor at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

The idea of a heart’s passion and what it means to be part of a whole due to a strong bond of love, commitment, and sacrifice are all ideas that Tille Cole explores in Caresa and Achille’s story and as their souls merge and outside forces try to overpower what they feel for one another, readers truly understand that even though differing worlds and obligations can attempt to prevent what’s meant to be, there’s still a way to remain whole and solidify a love created out of nothing but vines.

4.5 Poison Apples

I opened the window beside me and stared at the illuminated entrance. I swallowed hard and placed my empty glass on the bar. Metal groaned, breaking through the twilight, as the massive black wrought-iron gates began to open. The limo slowly pulled onto the property’s lane, and I drank in the thick forest that shielded the estate. I inhaled the freshness of the lush green trees. The unpolluted sky was thick with stars—not a single cloud in sight.

A few minutes later, the thick woods cleared, and I gasped. Acres and acres of gold and green vineyards covered the landscape. The scents of plump grapes and damp soil permeated the warm air. I closed my eyes. It reminded me of being a child. It brought me back to the days before I was taken to New York. I could still feel the heat of the Emilia-Romagna sun on my face, the deep smell of olives, grapes and flowers drifting in the breeze as I ran around our Parma estate.

I smiled a nostalgic smile and allowed my eyes to drift open again. I rested my arms on the window and leaned my chin on them as the limo drove on. There were several small villas peppered over the landscape, their lights twinkling in the distance. They must have been the winemakers’ residences. It was not only the Bella Collina merlot that was made on this land; other reds were too—particularly the Chianti from the region’s finest Sangiovese grapes. The Bella Collina olive oil was also up there with the best. But nothing compared to the famed merlot.

The limo turned right, and my breath caught in my throat. I lifted my head and stared disbelievingly at the property ahead. Bella Collina was a veritable Palace of Versailles tucked away in the Umbrian wilderness.

“Mio Dio,” I whispered as I took in the imposing stone structure, the sweeping steps and the vast number of windows set in the building’s walls. Large pillars of red-veined marble flanked the entrance. Cypress trees framed the estate as if it were the shining star of a fine Renaissance painting. Sculptures of famed Savona monarchs of old stood proudly on the manicured lawns, and strategically placed lighting illuminated the sheer perfection of every piece of topiary.

As a child, I had been to the Palazzo Savona in Florence. It was widely regarded to be one of the finest estates in all of Italy, if not western Europe. But this . . . this . . . there were no words. It was perfectly placed, as if it had always been there. As if it had grown naturally from the Umbrian earth just as sure as the vines and woods that kept this architectural treasure hidden from view.
