RELEASE REVIEW: Under Her by Samantha Towle

Blurb

A steamy and hilarious standalone romance from New York Times best-selling author Samantha Towle…

I’m used to being in charge. In and out of the office.

So, when my parents go behind my back and hire a co-CEO to help me manage my family’s business, let’s just say, I don’t take it too well.

Especially not when the woman they’ve hired is the one girl who hated my guts in college. She thinks I’m an overprivileged, womanizing man-whore. I think she’s an uptight, stuck-up bitch.

And, now, she’s here, in my office, telling me how to run my company.

I don’t think so.

It doesn’t matter that she has legs that go on for days or that I keep imagining bending her over my desk and showing her just how bossy I can be.

I’ve worked my ass off and paid my dues to get to where I am, and she’s not taking it from me.

No freaking way.

Morgan Stickford is about to learn the hard way that Wilder Cross is the only boss around here.

Review

Samantha Towle’s newest release, Under Her, proves the idea that there’s a thin line between love and hate and that when people get hurt by someone else’s words and actions, the best defense is to go on the offensive, protecting one’s heart from any further heartbreak by being standoffish and bitchy. And let me tell you, the years that Morgan Stickford had to endure Wilder Cross’ hurtful words and manwhorish antics made Morgan construct an impenetrable wall around her heart, but she could have never imagined that 13 years later, she’d be business partners with the one man who always made her feel invisible.

Under Her is mostly told through Wilder’s perspective, which actually works well for the story because if I would have seen/heard about his actions and attitude, both in college and as a businessman, through only Morgan’s viewpoint, I’m not sure I would have given him the chance I did…but by Samantha Towle putting me and other readers inside Wilder’s head, a place that is most definitely full of crude words and a cocky attitude, it allows us to see when/how his frame of mind changes and the moments he realizes that his actions, when they come to the opposite sex, are completely selfish and, at times, reprehensible…but that enlightenment only comes when he finally sees the stuck-up girl from Northwestern as the woman she truly is, both inside and out.

I have to admit…for most of the story, Wilder Cross is every bit the jackhole Morgan Stickford believes he is, but it’s not because he hasn’t earned his spot as CEO of his parents’ lingerie company ‘Under Her’ because he’s earned that name and more due to his hard work and dedication; it’s because he doesn’t think about anybody else’s feelings but his own and what he feels has everything to do with getting off and then taking off, never looking back on the women he’s bedded, never thinking about the repercussions of his actions, not only when it comes to no-strings sex but also when it comes to speaking before thinking and not truly grasping how his words and deeds affect other people regardless of his intentions.

The flashbacks to Wilder and Morgan’s college days come solely from Morgan’s point of view, which means that readers completely understand why she detests the man she also has a crush on. So while Wilder seems completely oblivious to what he’s done to receive Morgan’s wrath both 13 years ago and in present time, readers can’t help but side with her when it comes to ill feelings for Wilder, even though she also needs to take some of the responsibility for their icy relationship because she never spoke up or defended herself when Wilder made her feel inferior and unworthy and someone as oblivious as Wilder was/is, especially during his college days, probably can’t remember half the things in said in the moment as well as half the girls he slept with during his weekend benders.

Wilder and Morgan’s story is definitely an angsty read filled with a large amount of sexual tension. Wilder’s musings about how things might have gone between him and Morgan if he would have taken a minute to truly see her seems appropriate due to their circumstances and it also illustrates Wilder’s tunnel vision when it comes to women and what he’s used them for up until this point in his life. I will say that there were plenty of times in the story that I wanted to slap Wilder or kick him in the nuts for how he treated his bedmates but I do understand that those women knew the score before jumping into his bed, so, in a way, I can’t fault him for taking what they’re freely offering him…I just wish he used that intelligent brain of his during his weekend play days not just during business hours.

One thing I would have liked a bit more insight into is how Morgan went from being the insecure wall flower that she was in college to the confident intelligent businesswoman she becomes…I needed that further character development so that the woman readers and Wilder meet in his office aligns with the girl we met 13 years ago.

Overall, I enjoyed Under Her; Wilder and Morgan’s sexual chemistry was off the charts…they definitely took advantage of every possible surface and location in Wilder’s home and the fact that Morgan brought Wilder to his knees is exactly what the egomaniac needed and what made me accept his transformation despite how very out of character it was.

Review

A woman with a death wish due to survivor’s guilt and a man who can’t be another way for her to hurt herself.

A doctor who uses her skills and training to help those in war torn cities and a body guard who vows to protect the innocent, unafraid to step in front of bullets for his job.

Stephanie Gibson and Brody Carter may not see themselves as worthy of one another, but it’s clear that they need each other more than anyone else, and even though they parted ways after their one night together, their lives are destined to intersect again, not only because of what they created, but also because Brody promises to be worthy of everything that Stephanie brings to his life as long as she can stop punishing herself for actions that everyone has put behind them but her.

Stephanie and Brody’s thoughts and actions are bound to frustrate readers because they seem to be the only ones who don’t seem to understand their worth. And while their behavior may cause readers to dislike them, in my opinion, Lexi Blake does a great job illustrating exactly why Stephanie and Brody feel the way they do and why their actions show two people lost in their own heads, unwilling to gain clarity because they don’t know how to see past what they’ve always thought about themselves and what they deserve. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to shake both of them numerous times throughout the story, but they’re the only people who can change their perspectives and they have to realize what they’d be giving up if they continue down the path they’re going – one that leads them away from those who love them and need them.

Stephanie and Brody make numerous mistakes throughout Love Another Day, some more costly than others, but all of their decisions illustrate just how self-destructive Stephanie is and just how skewed Brody’s sense of self worth has become. But with a new focus for both of them and an immense amount of support behind them, as long as they can weather the deadly situation they find themselves in, they’ll have time to work through their respective issues and find a way to make things right between them, offering them a second chance to be a part of something they both deserve.

Love Another Day’s story line is extremely complex – not only does its setting occur in multiple countries but the number of characters involved in the main plot line forces readers to ascertain who can be trusted and who has ulterior motives when it comes to helping Stephanie stay alive.

Despite the abundance of situations that simultaneously occur in the story, Stephanie and Brody’s tumultuous relationship and a resolution to the threat on her life remain central to everything that happens…all of the advice given to them…all of the steps taken to ensure Stephanie’s safety…all of the insight gained about why Stephanie’s the way she is…EVERYTHING that’s said and done work to move the story line forward and to gain a variety of perspectives on all that has happened and all that MUST happen so that Stephanie and Brody have a limitless amount of days to repair themselves and each other.

Review

Every time I re-enter the doors of Seduction, I anxiously anticipate the camaraderie that I’ve come to expect from the restaurant’s five owners. Their friendship is always at the forefront of each story, illustrating just how instrumental Riley, Addie, Cami, Kat, and Mia are, not just in running Seduction, but also in ensuring that none of them ever have to face anything alone, especially when it comes to the opposite sex.

In book four of the Fusion series, The Beauty of Us, Riley’s online dating woes leave her searching for the elusive good guy – someone like Addie, Cami, and Kat have found in their significant others, and while Riley has a front row seat to all the swoonworthy romance that her three best friends receive on a regular basis, she has yet to find a guy who she really gels with or one who wants something more than a one-night stand.

But Riley’s luck seems to be changing after Trevor Cooper, the executive producer for Seduction’s reality tv special, makes it his mission to prove that not all guys are assholes, and in doing so, she might just find the one meant just for her…as long as she and Trevor can work around their busy schedules and the fact Riley lives in Portland while Trevor leaves in LA.

Of the five ladies of Seduction, Riley seems to be one of the more traditional ones when it comes to the kind of guy and relationship she wants. She’s definitely an independent woman who doesn’t need a man to live a full life but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t want to share her life with someone who makes her feel special and loved. Riley’s track record with guys, though, makes her feel like she’ll never have what her friends have, so she focuses on her job and reconsiders her online dating options.

It’s easy to see why Riley’s attracted to Trevor right from the start. He’s a fantastic book boyfriend because he’s a down-to-earth kind of guy – a gamer and a bit of a geek who isn’t afraid to share his knowledge of Star Wars and his love of gaming with anyone who’ll listen. Trevor never pretends to be someone he’s not and even though a bit of drama comes Riley’s way when she begins seeing Trevor, it’s clear that he’s not the issue nor will he allow that baggage to interfere with what he’s building with Riley despite its attempt to do just that.

The Beauty of Us is a sweet and steamy read – one that proves that not all guys are assholes, not only because Trevor isn’t one but also because Addie, Cami, and Kat have all found men who are everything these amazing women want and deserve.

I adore the Fusion series, and while I’ll be sad to see it end, I CANNOT wait for Mia’s story…with the tease that Kristen Proby leaves readers with at the end of The Beauty of Us, it seems that Mia hasn’t been completely forthcoming about her past and now that it seems to be reappearing in her present, I’m eager to see how Mia and her girls handle what’s to come both in their private and professional lives.

Excerpt

“There seems to be an explosion in the jackass population,” I reply, and sigh, passing my glass to Kat for a refill.

“Where are you meeting them?” he asks, and I bite my lip.

“I don’t want to tell you.”

“Online,” he says with a nod.

“I didn’t say that!”

“Didn’t have to. If you met him at the gym or the grocery store, or somewhere else in person, you wouldn’t be embarrassed.”

“I’m not embarrassed.”

“Yes, you are. Otherwise, you wouldn’t mind telling me.”

“Fine.” I sigh and rub my forehead with my fingers. “I met them online.”

“Stop that,” he says.

“I don’t know where else I’d meet people,” I reply. “I’m at work at least fifty hours a week. I don’t do school or clubs or church, and I rarely go to the grocery store because I always eat here.”

“I could stop feeding you,” Mia interjects and I toss her a glare.

“I’m just saying, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.”

“I don’t understand any of the words you just said.” I squint at him, trying to process.

“Switch it up,” he says with a grin. “Try to meet people somewhere else. I mean, you didn’t meet me online, and I’m not an asshole.”

“Sure, you’re cute, and you look like you have your shit together, but I suspect that once I got to know you I’d learn that you have mommy issues and fourteen dogs.”

“You might,” he says with a thoughtful nod. “I do hide those things well. All I’m saying is, stop using the dating sites and try meeting people in real life.”

“Yeah. Easy for you to say.” I pout into my wineglass. “Do I need to send you some money for this counseling session?”

“Nah, the first one’s on me,” he says, tossing that crazy-hot smile at me again. “Just don’t combine Star Wars and Star Trek anymore and that’s payment enough for me.”

He pulls a few bills out of his wallet and tosses them on the bar, then stands to leave.

“Have a good night, and good luck,” he says.

“Thanks.” Just as he’s almost out of view, I call out. “Wait! I didn’t ask your name.”

“Trevor,” he says, and my stomach immediately does at least four cartwheels. “Trevor Cooper.”

“You’re early,” is all I can think to say. My cheeks burning, my fingertips immediately tremble. “You’re not supposed to be here for two more days.”

“I like to come early. Get the lay of the land, that sort of thing.” He smiles and waves. “See you in a couple of days.”

He walks away, and as soon as I hear the front door close, I turn to my friends and just stare at them in utter horror.

“Tell me that didn’t just happen.”

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36071134-burn-in-hail

One look at the sixteen-year-old, prim and proper town goody-two-shoes, Hennessy Hanes, and Tate Casey knows he’s in trouble.  He knows he should stay away from the preacher’s daughter, but there’s something about her he’s drawn to, and he can’t resist the pull.

The more he gets to know her, the more he realizes that something isn’t right. He may not be able put his finger on what it is, but he’s determined to find out what’s going on with the girl with the haunted eyes.

Tate didn’t anticipate that someone else would be just as determined to keep Hennessy’s nightmare a secret, and he never realizes just how far that person is willing go to keep those skeletons in the closet until it’s too late.

With the very real threat of jail time hanging over his head, Tate leaves without a backwards glance at the town or the girl. The problem is that out-of-sight doesn’t necessarily mean out of mind, and it’s Tate who’s now haunted by his decision and memories of Hennessy.

***

Hennessy Hanes knows better than anyone that not everything is always as it appears to be. After years of being on the receiving end of her squeaky-clean preacher father’s abuse, she seizes an opportunity to leave it all behind and runs.

Her only regret is that in walking away she loses any chance with the one person who tried to save her.

***

Fast forward ten years, and they’re both back where they started.

Tate was never a good boy, and it turns out that the man he’s now grown into isn’t all that much better. Anger is a living, breathing part of him, and there’s a court order forcing him to seek help from the one person he’s never forgotten.

Hennessy never thought she’d see Tate Casey again, and certainly not on her couch. But now it’s her turn to save him, and there are rules she must follow as his psychologist, not to mention a court order instructing her to help him manage his anger. If she doesn’t follow those rules, he’ll end up back in jail.

Tate Casey has never been a man who followed the rules, and Hennessy is no longer the straight-laced, timid preacher’s daughter she once was.

His hands may be tied, so it looks like for the first time in Hennessy’s life, she’ll be the one breaking the rules for the chance to finally get what she’s always wanted. Him.

My kids are all under 5, so I can assure you that they are a handful.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him.

Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions.

I didn’t think he’d call me back.

I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become.

Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets.

Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.

A complete STANDALONE.

Review

‘Maybe it’s not really a mistake if you learn from it.’

Sage advice from a teenage boy who didn’t truly understand how much those words would apply to his future self and to his childhood friend who reconnects with him 13 years later due to a drunken impulse to tell him exactly how she feels about what happened all those years ago.

Rana’s errors and Landon’s misjudgments are central to the people they’ve become, and even though their poor judgments aren’t revealed until further into their story, it’s clear that their guarded secrets are game changers and they’re both too scared of ruining what they’ve been building from Rana’s first drunken phone call.

Rana Saloomi is a very intriguing heroine. It’s evident through Penelope Ward’s portrayal of Rana that there are many layers to her personality; Rana has always had issues with her physical appearance, so much so that she took the steps to make changes to her body, but those alterations don’t necessarily give her the self confidence one would suspect and despite her job as a belly dancer, Rana is so far in her head that she’s afraid to show Landon her body’s transformation.

Rana’s perspective of the man Landon is due to where he currently lives as well as how he grew up in Michigan is definitely based on false impressions and they are drastically different from who Landon has become and how his life has gone since the moment he landed in California. Landon’s scars may not be as visible as Rana’s are, but the way he describes his days as well as the vague comments about things that have happened to him allow readers to understand that he’s every bit as damaged as Rana is, and while the reasons behind their self-destructive behavior differ, the impact those situations have on their psyche as well as their views on love and commitment make fully exposing themselves to each other extremely difficult tasks.

The buildup of Rana and Landon’s relationship is perfectly paced due to the dynamics of their situation. A lot has happened to both of them since they saw each other 13 years ago, so not only do they have to get to know the new versions of one another, but they also have to contend with the fact that they live thousands of miles apart and they don’t even know what the other one looks like because they are no longer the teens they once were.

Rana and Landon’s late night exchanges and the way Landon always asks Rana to tell him something funny slowly rebuild the bond that they shared as teenagers, and while, this time, there are more than friendly feelings involved, the physical as well as the emotionally aspects of their relationship can’t be rushed or else insecurities and fears will doom it before anything real can develop.

‘Show me you.’ That’s exactly what Rana and Landon want from each other, but a selfie isn’t exactly what the only thing they had in mind…although how they physically look is part of the intrigue. There are revelations that need to come out and decisions that need to be made, and when they are, it’s interesting to see exactly where Rana’s one drunk dial leads her and Landon despite the years that have passed, the distance between where one another lives, and the secrets that could cause them to lose each other even though they’ve just reunited.

I truly enjoyed Rana and Landon’s story; their second chance story line is unique because of the way they reconnect and the individual demons that have to be slain before any kind of a real relationship can exist. And let me tell you, Rana and Landon’s secrets are doozies and their fears are warranted when it comes to the fallout that they could bring, but it’s also abundantly clear that what’s between them is worth exposing their truths and dealing with the repercussions together.

Be ready for ALL. THE. FEELS. in DRUNK DIAL. I, for one, wasn’t, which made it an overwhelming story but in all the best possible ways.
