RELEASE BLITZ: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Porter by Georgia Cates

Title: Porter
A Men of Lovibond Series Standalone
Author: Georgia Cates
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 4, 2017
Blurb

My employee’s daughter. The tomboy. The kid who once did odd jobs around the brewery. That’s all she was… until three years passed and she walked into my office for an interview.

Frankee Dawson is no longer that girl I once called Kiddo. She’s grown into a beautiful, sexy, desirable woman. Very desirable. And that’s a problem. She’s my employee’s daughter. Lovibond family. And too young for me. Too innocent.

I want to feel her respond to my kiss.
I want her body to tremble as she anticipates my touch.
I want to learn all the places that bring her pleasure.
But mostly I want her to know that she’s never truly been loved by a man until me.

Frankee is my intern and under me for the summer. Literally. It’s a difficult secret to maintain when you can’t keep your hands off each other.

This was supposed to be a hot summer fling. Sex and fun without commitment—that’s what we called it. But we were wrong. This is more. I’ve never felt this way about a woman. Never cared more about someone else’s happiness more than my own.

I love her and I’m happy. So damn happy… until a terrible mistake from my past springs forward and threatens to rip us apart.

There are a million reasons for her to leave me. And trust me, she should. But all I really need is one good reason for her to stay.

Review

In the final book of the series, Porter, readers of the Lovibond men’s stories witness just how much a man can change his ways when he finds the ‘One’. And while it’s difficult enough to start a new relationship – one that is much different than any before it – Porter Beckman further complicates things, both professionally and personally, by choosing someone who should be off-limits due to her father’s position in the Lovibond company, the fact that Porter’s her boss, and the 9 year age difference that illustrates just how innocent she is.

But regardless of the forbidden aspect of Porter and Frankee’s relationship, Georgia Cates makes it clear through their character development and interactions just how well they complement each other at work and in the bedroom, so while what’s between them remains a secret and has an expiration date, as the story progresses, it’s obvious that both Porter and Frankee wouldn’t mind what’s between them turning into something more.

Despite Frankee’s inexperience with men, her and Porter’s sexual relationship, once it gets to that point, is a big part of their connection, and with Porter as her dirty talking, ‘magic mouth’ instructor, Frankee definitely lives up to her ‘porno princess’ nickname. Even though they do spend a lot of time having sex, they grow as a couple because they work well together on the advertising and marketing for Lovibond, and when Frankee helps Porter and his family work through a difficult situation with positivity and insightfulness.

In Porter, Georgia Cates illustrates how a young girl’s crush turns into lust-filled interactions and then progresses into something that neither wants to give up, and while the knowledge of the forbidden/taboo aspect of Porter and Frankee’s relationship is always there, it’s easy to forgot just how much both of them are risking by sneaking around and stretching the truth because the bond that’s formed between them happens almost instantaneously and the desire and need they feel is unrelenting until they finally give into it.

There’s a lot that Porter and Frankee have to contend with in the story, and, at times, I felt like there was too much happening around and to them, particularly due to a level of crazy that is absolutely beyond comprehension. That part of the story line, in my opinion, distracted readers and created more of a soap opera-like feel to a story that had more than enough drama already.

Despite my issues with part of the plot, I liked Porter and Frankee’s story, and the way Cates brings all three Lovibond men and their women together at the end perfectly illustrates the camaraderie amongst them and indicates that the Lovibond family will continue to expand, not only in business but in their personal lives as well.

Excerpt

Frankee and I stayed up until three in the morning. I couldn’t keep my hands off of her. Not when she was wearing that sexy-as-fuck lingerie.

I’ve never seen anyone wear anything like that. Sure, I’ve watched porn and seen it on those women, but never on a real-life woman. And never one in my bed.

Frankee is like my very own porno princess.

I gave her six orgasms last night—one an hour. I’ve never done that before. Not that I don’t have the ability. I’ve just never been inclined to.

“Frankee.”

She doesn’t stir. Not even a little. I shake her shoulder this time. “Frankee. Wake up, baby. I have to go.”

She rolls to her back and slowly opens her eyes. “Someone fucked me into next week. You’ll have to check back with me when it comes around to see if I can wake up.”

“You don’t have to get up, but I do have to go.”

“No. Don’t go. Staaaay.” She has no idea how badly I want to.

At some point during the night, Frankee washed off her makeup, and I’m seeing her for the first time without cosmetics. It’s confirmed. She’s a natural beauty and doesn’t need that garbage on her face.

“I wish I could stay in this bed with you all day, but I promised Stout I’d help him move his stuff to his new house today. I was supposed to be there already, but I couldn’t bear to leave when you looked so beautiful in my bed.”

I already know he’s going to give me shit for being late.

“Wait a minute… before you go.”

Frankee dashes to the bathroom, still wearing her porno princess attire from last night. That is one convenient getup. I hope she has more of those.

She returns from the bathroom with her hair twisted into a topknot. I don’t know what it is that makes that so damn sexy.

She wraps her arms around my shoulders and lowers herself to straddle me on the bed. “Kiss me before you go.”

Her mouth is minty. And hungry, based on the way she devours my mouth and neck. “Is this your plan for tempting me to stay?”

Her hands are working to undo the button and zipper on my jeans. “No. This is.”

Twisted Twosome, an all new sexy, laugh out loud romantic comedy from Meghan Quinn is LIVE!

TwistedTwosome

Twisted Twosome by Meghan Quinn

Publication Date: August 3, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Racer McKay is a broody bastard.

From the moment I met him, he’s been rude, irritable, and unbearable.

A contractor working to remodel my parents pool house for extra cash, he stomps around in those clunky construction boots with his tool belt wrapped around his narrow waist, and a chip on his shoulder.

Racer McKay is also infuriatingly . . . sexy as hell. I want to take that pencil tucked behind his ear, and draw lazy lines slowly up and down his body all the while wanting to strangle him at the same time.

We try to stay out of each other’s way . . . that is until I have no other option but to ask for his help.

But what I don’t realize is he needs me just as much as I need him. I have money he’s desperate for, and he holds the key to making my dreams come true.

Our pranks turn from sarcastic banter, to sexual tension and lust-filled glances. Bickering matches quickly morph into slow burn moments. We’re hot, we’re cold. We push and pull. I need him, I don’t want him. We’re on the verge of combusting with an agreement dangling dangerously between us. Neither one of us can afford to lose one another and yet, we’re finding it quite hard to decipher the line that rests between love and hate.

“Fine. If you don’t want to play me, I’m sure there’s someone in this bar who will.”

She rose from the bar stool and smoothed her dress down her thighs. I swore it looked longer at the cemetery than it did right now, inching up her toned legs. The shoulders and chest were sheer black lace, as sophisticated as could be, but the lace took on a sexier edge in the dim light of the bar. I’d lay money on her being the classiest thing this place had ever seen. And damn, what those heels did for her . . .

I ripped my gaze away from her ass to focus on her face.

Her lips flattened in obstinate challenge before she strutted toward the pool table. And yeah, I used the word strutted because there was no other way to describe how she walked in those stilettos now that her attitude was flaring.

Heads turned to follow her progress, and two guys jumped off their stools to follow her.

Oh, hell no. Not a chance, assholes.

I pushed off my seat and stalked toward her. Ari’s back was to me when I stopped behind her at the cue rack. She spun around, unaware of my presence, and smacked into my chest, a pool stick trapped between us. She sucked in a breath, jerking her head up.

“Sorry. Didn’t realize you were so close.”

Years ago, she never would have lost track of where I was if we were in the same room. The realization was a blow to my ego, although not unexpected. I no longer made the cut on her priority list, and that stung.

Rather than move and give her space, I reached around her to snag a cue off the rack, letting my arm brush her shoulder.

Ah . . . there it is. Her facial expression remained static, but her involuntary shiver gave her away. Maybe I’m not off the list completely.

I didn’t know why it mattered, but after the last few brutal days, I needed something good to distract me from the shit show that was my life. And there was no doubt in my mind that Ariel Sampson was everything good.

Her spine straightened and she bobbed around me, avoiding contact in favor of racking the balls and lining them up.

“Do you want to break?” she asked.

“Ladies first.”

Ari rolled her eyes and reached for the chalk. With her stick prepped, she leaned over the edge of the table, her ass jutting out and the hem of her dress riding up her thigh.

Lord . . . I groaned silently. This was torture.

Haven’t I been through enough? I tossed the question skyward and received no sign the big man had heard me.

I tore my gaze off her ass and scanned the bar. Mistake. My fist tightened around the pool cue as a reflex, but that didn’t mean I wouldn’t use it to smack every jerk in this bar back into line if they didn’t quit staring. Double standard? Sure. But I didn’t care.

With a step behind her, I blocked the most direct view and turned to glare at all of them. Thankfully, Heath’s interest was hooked on the waitress working our table. One by one, the gazes dropped away, and I turned back to Ari, marginally satisfied that they picked up what I was throwing down. Off-limits, assholes.

Ari cursed and stood up straight, leaning lightly on her pool cue. “Dammit. I had that shot.”

I scanned the green felt and found half her balls were missing. “Jesus, what were you doing? Trying to clear the table?”

Her nose went up in the air. “Trying? If I wanted to clear the table, it would be clear. It’s just angles.”

“Brainiac as always.”

Ari shrugged, but I caught a hint of a smile. “Didn’t you hear? It’s cool to be a geek now.”

I had no doubt that wherever she lived in California, she was exactly what was cool. Shit, she had every man’s attention in this bar.

“You were always cool in my book, Red. My turn.” Even though I wanted to wait for her smile, I chalked my cue and sank two shots before missing the third.

“Not bad.” Her nonchalant tone made me grin.

“I try.”

Her eyes finally locked on mine. “I succeed.”

Hell. Why was that statement so damned sexy coming from her lips?

She pushed off her pool cue and spun around to face the table again, her dress sliding up another inch as she bent over the table.

My dick pulsed against my jeans.

Heath is going to kill me.

Excerpt

Sophie reached for the key in the ignition.

“Move over,” Ryan said.

“Excuse me?”

Tearing off his sunglasses, he stuck his face into the Jeep, forcing her to lean back. “Move over. I’m getting in.”

Struck by all that masculinity, the scent of sun-warmed cotton, soap from his shower, and whatever shampoo he’d used, it took her a moment to answer. He was a formidable presence, and the energy rolling off him overwhelmed her. “You can teach me how to use a stick shift from the passenger seat.”

“I’m not going to teach you. I’m driving you.”

“You can’t drive me to the other side of the island.”

“Wanna bet?” he said.

“Why?”

“Because you’re going to get twenty minutes down the road, stall out, and then what? You’ll be stuck on the road in the middle of nowhere by yourself.”

His intense gaze unnerved her. Stirred up all kinds of inappropriate feelings.“Why are you staring at my mouth?”

His jaw clamped shut. “Because I freaking love your mouth. I can’t stop kissing it, remember?”

Heat rushed up her neck, burning her cheeks. “Yes, I remember. That was very rude of you to bring it up.”

His arms reached over his head, hands clutching the roll-over bar of the Jeep. “Move over, Soph.”

“This isn’t a good idea.”

“It’s happening.”

“I’m not coming back until tomorrow.”

His nostrils flared, but he remained silent.

“And you don’t want to see the volcano.”

“Not really.”

“I’m not missing the waterfall with magical properties.” She gave him a meaningful look.

“No.” His lips twitched. “I wouldn’t expect you to.”

When she didn’t budge, he finally looked her right in the eyes and gave her the most searing look she’d ever seen. The heat, the intensity, ignited a flurry of explosions in her chest. Holding her gaze, he said, “I think you know I’m going with you.”

And don’t miss the first title in the Wild Love Series!

About Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW STOP: The Brightest Sunset by Aly Martinez

The Brightest Sunset (The Darkest Sunrise Duet, #2)

Amazon US  |  Amazon UK  |  Amazon CA  |  Amazon AU

Synopsis

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Bullshit.

Words destroyed me.

“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”

“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”

“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Lies.

Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.

Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.

“He’s gone.”

In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

Review

Porter and Charlotte’s bond began in the darkness – a place both of them know well…a place where no questions, no judgments, no faking it, and no apologies are required…a place where they can take a complete breath, at least for a moment, creating beauty amidst so much pain, grief, and anger.

In The Darkest Sunrise, Porter became Charlotte’s lifeline – the person who stood by her side, without judgment, allowing her to keep the light out and learn how to cope with her sadness, her fear, and her need to, at times, to succumb to the blackness that constantly threatens to destroy her. While their pain and circumstances differed, Porter and Charlotte’s connection was solidified because they understood so much of the other’s struggles and they allowed one another to just be what they needed to be despite everyone else pushing for more from them.

With the events that occurred at the end of book 1 and the revelations that continued to be revealed at the start of The Brightest Sunset, Porter and Charlotte’s roles, in some ways, have changed; both are still lost and pretend better than anyone else, but this time, Porter is the one obliterated by the darkness, struggling to continue to fight when it seems like his entire world has, once again, been turned upside down, and without an amenable conclusion, he may not find himself capable of enduring this impossible situation.

Porter and Charlotte’s duet is an unbelievably complicated story line. Because there are multiple people involved in the main plot, there is no easy solution. There are too many variables at play and too many emotions to contend with, especially when it comes to the role all of the adults want to play in this little boy’s life.

Aly Martinez crafts an incredible ending to Porter and Charlotte’s emotional journey. All of Porter and Charlotte’s feelings as well as those of everyone else involved resonate from the pages of the story – they are living and breathing things – emotions that can both destroy and mend. And, even if readers get frustrated, which they undoubtedly will, with some characters’ actions and how they handle these impossible circumstances, readers can be assured that EVERY SINGLE word, act, and thought is something that can happen when so many people’s lives are categorically altered by one person’s decisions.

The Brightest Sunset is a contradictory idea that is used to illustrate just how complex Porter and Charlotte’s circumstances are. The hope for both of them is that they can bring themselves and each other out of a darkness that serves as an executioner of their hearts and souls and into one that allows them to heal their emotional wounds, which also allows them, little by little, to find a way to revel in the lightness that seems to be infiltrating the dark and to move forward, knowing that the past events will not be forgotten, but perhaps, they can be remembered as what was and the focus can now be on what is.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

A Little Bit Like Love by Brooke Blaine

Publication Date: July 27th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance/MM Romance

What if you had everything in the world you wanted…except the man you’d left behind?

Jackson Davenport, the charismatic, strait-laced heir to the Davenport fortune, has a secret. One he’s been hiding since he graduated from South Haven all-boys academy—and that secret’s name is Lucas.

When a work trip takes Jackson back to his old stomping grounds, memories of the year he shared with Lucas come crashing to the surface. With growing pressure from his father to settle down and take over the family business, Jackson knows he’s on borrowed time, and sets out to find the free-spirited daredevil he once knew.

But Lucas isn’t the same man he was eight years ago.

One night. A shattered heart. And an endless parade of nameless faces. Lucas Sullivan is South Haven’s ultimate playboy, a reputation he’s honed since the only boy he ever loved left without a trace. To the world, he’s brash and confident, an in-demand artist who spends his days designing one-of-a-kind pieces and his nights as king of the downtown scene.

Many have tried and failed to get past the barrier he’s carefully constructed, but it’s the shy, studious boy he once coaxed out of his shell who still haunts him.

Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe it was lust. Or maybe…it was a little bit like love.

Review

The first book in Brooke Blaine’s South Haven series tells a story about a once in a lifetime connection/bond that’s dramatically severed due to a father’s domineering and prejudicial ways, categorically altering the lives of two young men who no longer have a choice as to whether or not to pursue the strong feelings they felt for one another, despite only being in high school and unsure of what they could become.

For the past eight years, Lucas Sullivan and Jackson Davenport have had to redefine their lives, especially when it comes to romantic relationships because the heartbreak they endured due to their forced separation as only seniors in high school forced one to put up a multitude of walls to never again feel the pain of losing someone and the other created a grand illusion of his life, suppressing his true wants and needs and settling for something else simply because he felt he had no choice.

Sex God. Manwhore. Bad boy. Empty. Lonely. Nameless fucks.

These are the words that describe who and what Lucas became once Jackson left South Haven and seemed to never look back. And boy does he seem like the arrogant ass he wants everyone, including himself, to believe he is. Brooke Blaine does a fantastic job of illustrating Lucas’ contrary characteristics. He’s not the same man who Jackson knew all those years ago; he’s cynical and jaded, and his ability to construct a barrier around himself to not allow anyone close has definitely worked, but Lucas’ self preservation actually sabotages all kinds of relationships, reaffirming just how callous and arrogant his self-created facade is and making sure his mask of indifference remains in place even when his past invades his present and threatens to tear down his carefully constructed walls around his heart.

Jackson’s last name has defined his life since he was born; his father set his son’s life path long before Jackson could even voice his opinion and the underhanded manipulation kept Jackson in line, even when he didn’t want to be. For far too long, Jackson has allowed his love and respect for his father to cloud his decisions, forcing him to live a life that was never about his true wants or needs, but what would look good in society’s eyes. But fate stepped in to give Jackson another chance with the one person who ever made him truly feel alive, foiling his father’s plans providing Jackson with an avenue to see clearly for the first time in his life who his father is…who his father wants Jackson to be…and who Jackson knows, deep within, who he truly is without his father’s orchestrated plays.

Brooke Blaine creates an amazing group of characters and a multifaceted plot line in A Little Bit Like Love. Because readers are privy to both Lucas and Jackson’s perspectives, they’re able to understand the reasons behind the lifestyles Lucas and Jackson choose to live and how alone and incomplete they feel living those kind of lives. Lucas and Jackson were forced apart when things between them were only getting started, but now that they have a chance to reunite and truly see what they could become, the risks, especially for Jackson, are even greater than they were all those years ago, which means that if Jackson isn’t strong enough to voice his wants and needs, there’s no hope for anything between them but a few nights of sex.

I adored Lucas and Jackson’s story; it’s sexy and angsty and it illustrates how paramount it is to be true to oneself at all costs. And, even though Lucas is a bit of a hothead and acts before he thinks on a number of occasions, his two friends, Bash and Shaw, were there for him when Jackson couldn’t be, and I CANNOT wait for their stories!

Excerpt

WITH THE NOTE from Principal Stewart crumpled in my fist, I stalked away from his office, away from the words I knew would haunt me forever.

“I’m sorry, Jackson. Your father is quite…insistent you return to Connecticut immediately.”

Immediately…immediately… With every echo of that word through my mind, my heart battered my chest, the ache to rip itself free of my body a plea I was helpless to honor.

There was only one reason he would’ve demanded I leave South Haven before the end of classes next week. My father had been adamant I receive the best education his money afforded, choosing to ship me down to south Georgia to attend the most prestigious all-boys academy in the country. I’d done him proud, rising to the top of my class, and I’d been practicing my salutatorian speech for days. Skipping out on graduation and the pomp and circumstance and recognition that came with it? Out of the question. Which could only mean one thing.

He knew. Somehow he knew.

That was the only explanation for the letter in my hand, for the abrupt dismissal this late in the evening and this close to the end of the school year. My father hadn’t gotten to where he was by being stupid or blind, and I’d seriously underestimated how many eyes and ears had been watching me during my four years. Although it would’ve only been the whispers over the last few months that piqued his interest, only the last eight that he would’ve had any reason to give me a second thought.

And that reason wasn’t a what—it was a who.

The halls of the St. John’s dormitory were silent when I entered, all the students down at the mess hall for dinner, followed by the final bonfire of the year. So there wouldn’t be anyone around to see me sneak down the hall to where I knew I shouldn’t be going but couldn’t help myself. My feet seemed to move of their own accord, the countdown to my utter devastation causing me to pick up the pace. The private plane would arrive in a handful of hours, giving me just enough time to pack my things, but there was no way I could leave without a goodbye. Not going to happen.

I wasn’t ready. I was supposed to have more time. As a cold sweat of panic seized me, I balled the letter tighter in my fist and chucked it into one of the trash bins as I passed.

Screw my father. Screw the life he’d set out for me, the one I was destined to live and hate with every fiber of my being. I wanted to bottle up every one of his expectations and throw the blasted thing out at an angry sea to swallow up and tear apart instead.

I wished it could be as easy as that. I’d been able to fool myself into a sense of freedom, but the cell door was about to smash shut on every dream I’d let myself have these past few months.

His private dorm was at the end of the long hall, last one on the right, and I rapped on it twice fast, waited a moment, and then repeated the pattern that we used for each other. A few seconds later, the door swung open, and seeing the sole object of my daily and nightly thoughts standing there in front of me with a mixture of surprise and delight in his eyes made me think that coming here had been a mistake. It was only going to sink the dagger in farther.

“Hey…I thought we were meeting la—” Lucas’s words cut off and the smile curling his lips fell as he got a good look at my face. “What’s wrong?”

You should tell him. Tell him what’s going on and that it isn’t your fault. Look him in the eye when you tell him you can never see him again.

A shooting pain tore through my chest as I realized what this goodbye actually meant. I wasn’t saying I wouldn’t be seeing him for the next couple of days or weeks. When I left South Haven’s campus in the early hours of the morning, I wouldn’t be seeing him again…ever.

God, can I do this? Break his heart as well as mine?

No…no, I couldn’t tell him. He’d look for me, find me, and there was no telling what my father would do if that happened. The letter had been my old man’s warning. Disobeying his orders would mean consequences neither of us were prepared for.

“Jackson?” Lucas’s voice dropped low, and then he looked past me out into the deserted hall. When he didn’t see anyone to blame on my current state, he frowned and waited for an answer.

The words didn’t come, though, so I stood there staring at him, taking a mental snapshot that I’d store away in a place no one could find and destroy. His black hair was casually tousled, and I knew him well enough to know he’d worried his hands through it, maybe wondering if I wouldn’t follow through on our plans tonight. He wore a simple grey t-shirt and low-slung jeans on his long and lean frame, and the swirl of black tattoos he’d recently inked on his tanned skin could be seen peeking around his right bicep before disappearing from view behind the thin material of his shirt. He was striking, both in looks and personality, and to say I hadn’t been expecting the force that was Lucas Sullivan when he’d transferred to the academy eight months ago was an understatement.

Quite simply, I’d been lost to him the first time I laid eyes on him.

Forcing myself to shake off my dread, I said, “I’m okay,” and tried to believe it for his sake.

“Well, you look like hell.” He leaned against the doorway, one of those charming half-grins cocking up one side of his lips. “Hell on wheels, anyway. What’d you do, run all the way here?”

Not too far off there. I didn’t even remember crossing campus to get to his dorm until I was in front of the building.

When I didn’t laugh at his teasing, Lucas’s expression fell again and his brows pulled down, a crease forming between them as his eyes, the color of a stormy sky, gave me a thorough once-over, looking for the source of my pain. He was silent for a long moment, but he must’ve seen something he didn’t like, because he stiffened and his jaw clenched. Then he took a deep breath and let it out in a rush.

“Tell me.”

“Tell you what?” I asked.

Lucas shook his head, his arms going over his chest. “I’m not helping you out here. If you came here for a reason, get out with it.”

Did he know? He couldn’t. I’d only just found out myself, and… No. There was no way. “It’s…complicated.”

“Complicated?”

“Yes.”

Lucas gave a humorless chuckle. “Jackson Davenport, I knew you were scared, but I never took you for a coward. If you don’t want to do this, you can man the hell up and tell me to my face.”

“What are you… I’m not…” I ran my hand over my face, struggling to understand the conclusion he’d come to for why I was standing at his door. My lack of a poker face had put him on the defensive. He thought I was here to reject him. An idea so completely unfathomable to me that it made my stomach turn thinking about it. “Lucas…you’ve got this all wrong.”

“Do I?”

“Yes. I’m not here to—“ I almost said “end things with you,” but I didn’t want to lie to him. I never had and I never would. Instead, I said, “Fight with you. I don’t want to fight.”

“Then why are you here, Jackson?” he asked, and my gaze fell to his lips. I’d tasted those lips only a few times, not nearly enough to quench a starving man’s hunger. All these months I’d wasted, warring with myself in my head, never letting myself have the thing I wanted most. And now I was down to a matter of hours. It wasn’t enough, not nearly enough. But it was all I had, and I wasn’t wasting another second.

If I couldn’t tell Lucas how I felt about him, then I’d show him.

Finally.

Irrevocably.

And starting now.

About Brooke Blaine

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

She is the author of Flash Point, a romantic suspense standalone, as well as the co-author of the erotic series, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released November 11th, 2015 and is the first in the L.A. Liaisons series.

If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find – just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for ten years.

All is fair in love and auto maintenance.

Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.

Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. Review

“If something breaks, we fix it. That’s what we do.”

As an auto mechanic, that’s Beau Winston’s objective for every car that comes to his garage. Once he identifies the issue, orders the parts he needs, and tweaks and adjusts the vehicle to resurrect it to its former glory, he can consider it a job well done…a problem corrected…an issue resolved.

But as Beau learns in Beard in Mind, the idea of ‘fixing’ a person – one whose mind is the very thing she needs to battle – the work on his end has extremely specific parameters – he’s an extra set of hands to step in and help make certain situations easier…to work with her to help her overcome her irrational fears and compulsions, but the only person who can truly ‘repair’ some of her issues is Shelly, herself, and to get to that point, she’s going to need Beau to see beneath her cool demeanor, irritating behavior, and rude comments, which shouldn’t be difficult for an easy going guy like Beau, but interestingly enough, it’s Beau who has the biggest issue with Shelly’s standoffishness for reasons that Penny Reid illuminates as Beau and Shelly’s story is told.

Beau and Shelly are actually a perfectly matched couple…even if they appear to loathe each other at the start of Beard in Mind. Because timeline of their story is side by side with the events in Cletus’ book, readers easily connect important information from Beard Science with new insights in Beau and Shelly’s story, which helps to paint a fuller picture of everything that is happening to the Winston brothers. Because the beginning chapters are told through Beau’s perspective, we only witness Shelly’s behavior through his eyes, which is important for this story line because everyone adores Beau and nothing riles him up, but for some reason, Shelly is a frigid witch during her first encounters with Beau and Beau readily judges her solely based on those interactions despite knowing that assuming things can lead to horrible misjudgments, which is exactly what occurs in this situation.

Since meeting Cletus in Ashley’s story, he’s always been my favorite Winston brother, but Beau is definitely a close second. He’s a lot more fragile than his family and the townspeople recognize, which is partially his fault because his charm and his goodness blind them to anything else. His demeanor, though, shouldn’t stop people from putting him first, worrying about how he is and what he’s going through, and Reid does a fabulous job of driving that idea home when Beau learns information about himself from an outside source – one who makes him question everything about his life and who he is, and as he deals with the fallout of that knowledge, he finds Shelly standing by his side and wanting him to lean on her as much as she leans on him.

The human mind is a fragile entity – one that can harm just as much as it can invigorate someone, and Beard in Mind illustrates that idea in a way that all readers can identify with, and while many may not have issues as big as Shelly’s when it comes to overcoming the obstacles that her head makes for her, her situation teaches us to be compassionate…to work harder to get beneath a person’s facade before judging…to be in awe of that person’s strength to battle something as domineering as the brain can be.

It’s clear through Shelly’s discussions with her therapist as well as when Shelly shares her diagnosis and her ‘crazy’ with Beau that Penny Reid researched and educated herself on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, its treatment, its effects, and the preconceived assumptions that other people have about the illness. Every aspect of this particular story line was meticulously laid out and explained so that readers could truly understand the fight that Shelly was up against and what it would take for a significant other to go through the highs and lows, the hot and cold behavior and still maintain a loving relationship despite the frustrations that would surely present themselves in the constant battle to rationalize the irrational and to outsmart the mind – one that is always working to win.

Penny Reid’s brilliance as a writer stems from her ability to create realistically flawed characters – ones whose ‘realness’ make them imperfect human beings who don’t have cookie cutter personalities nor do they constantly pretend to be someone they’re not, especially in front of the people who they love the most. What sets her apart from other romance writers is her unique, multifaceted characters, her extensive use of intellectual and enlightened diction, and her quest to stay true to her characters’ voices regardless of how ‘weird’ or ‘nerdy’ they may be.

Whenever I finish reading a Penny Reid story, I always stand in awe of how effortless her prose flows and how deep she delves into her characters’ psyches so she can illustrate exactly who they are, providing readers with a true understanding of what motivates and guides these odd and extraordinary personalities – people readers can’t help but fall in love with because they are anything but ordinary.
