I have to say…I’m liking this lighter side Leatha! It says a lot about a writer when she can transition between romance genres successfully, and Aleatha Romig does just that as she steps out of her dark and gritty world and delivers a story that is as sexy as it is sweet.
Plus One may seem like a straightforward title, but due to Kimbra’s background, specifically how she grew up and the expectations that surrounded her, the fact that she needs a date for her cousin’s wedding is an added complication to an already stressful visit, but Kimbra also knows that not bringing a plus one will only make matters worse, so when she sees an opportunity to snag herself a companion for her weekend home, she gets more than she bargains for…maybe even more than she ever thought she’d get…from a man who she never believed would want anything from her but her professionalism.
For three years, Duncan Willis has bided his time when it comes to his company’s Human Resource Specialist, but now he has the perfect opening to pursue the one woman who challenges him both as a man and as a human being, and he doesn’t plan to squander his chance to perhaps be her plus one for more than just a “pretend weekend.”
I absolutely adored Kimbra and her crazy family. Readers will connect with each one of them because they’re realistically portrayed and even though Kimbra’s hometown doesn’t understand why she left to pursue her dreams in New York City, it’s clear that they are proud of her and all that she’s accomplished on her own, even if they have a unique way of showing it.
Aleatha Romig also does a great job of showing a different side of New York’s most eligible bachelor. I don’t think readers would have the same reaction to Duncan if they didn’t hear parts of the story through his perspective. It’s easy to stereotype a man like him due to his extracurricular dalliances, but by allowing readers inside Duncan’s head and offering much needed insight into why he chooses to interact with women the way he does and what he’s actually hoping his weekend with Kimbra turns out to be, it’s clear that there’s much more to this undeniably sexy CEO.
Romig explores who Kimbra and Duncan are at their core and takes both of their fantasies and sets them on a path from pretend to real to hopefully permanent as long as Kimbra can believe Duncan is capable of that and Duncan see through the wall he’s built due to his past and work harder than he ever has for something that he’s wanted since he first laid eyes on Kimbra three years ago.
Plus One is a feel good story about two people who have intense chemistry but have never pursued it due to their company’s fraternization policy as well as Kimbra’s need to do her job with a clear conscience. It’s also a book about not taking the easy way out and what that means for someone’s personal and professional life because sometimes the easiest solutions are the ones that don’t give a person exactly what they want and need.

I bet Jimmy ten bucks this fake Duncan guy would be a no-show. Susan and I were sure that before last night, you’d have some reason why at the last minute he couldn’t attend. You know, like you’d make up some accident or something.”
Her brother is about as good at speaking softly as he is at being nice to his sister.
“Shut up!” Kimbra whispers back. “Obviously he’s real.”
Kevin’s head falls back in laughter. “He’s real, all right. Last night I thought your old bed was going to collapse.”
Kimbra’s eyes flash to me. And though I look down at my coffee and pray her dad isn’t listening, the gleam in her expression makes my cock twitch with the memories of the night before.
