“Whatever you say, Miss Shelby.” He smiled as we both buckled up. He revved the engine, and I’m pretty sure he moaned, but it was drowned out by the sound of the 306 horsepower V-8 engine. I turned up the radio, put my head back, and closed my eyes, but I could still picture his amused smile. Knowing I had put that look on his face made me happy, and I couldn’t help but think I wanted to do it again.

I don’t know how long we drove. I didn’t open my eyes when Zeke turned off the engine or got out of the car, but I did when my car door opened for me. He held his hand out to me, and I took it without question.

“Where are we?”

He just shrugged, never letting go of my hand, and kept walking in the direction of the seaside shack where we had parked. The menu was scrawled out on a giant chalkboard, but my companion didn’t ask me what I wanted. No, he just looked me up and down before ordering two lobster rolls, one bottled water, and pointing to a frozen drink many of the other patrons were enjoying. The girl behind the counter asked if he wanted a rum float on the top and he didn’t pause before he answered yes. I guess I was driving us back to the house. Zeke paid for our food and took the number she offered him. He handed me the bottled water and then guided me by the hand to a surprisingly empty table. I didn’t know if I should be mad or flattered my new friend didn’t even ask me what I wanted to eat. Hell, for all I knew both lobster rolls were for him—he was a big guy. I cracked the top of the water and began to chug it down while I stared into his alluring hazel eyes.

“I’m glad you’re enjoying my water,” he snickered before smiling again. Damn, his smile was hot.

The waitress arrived. “This is yours, pixie girl.” He motioned to the drink she placed before me. It was huge.

“Mine?” I asked with surprise.

From the synopsis alone, I knew that Elle and Lane’s story would take my heart and my emotions on one hell of a ride, and boy did it! These two couldn’t be more different in the paths their lives have taken them, which only adds to their contradictory feelings for one another and the frustrations of wanting someone who they hate but want to do dirty things to and with because as opposite as they are, where Elle and Lane collide is in their desire for kink…their need for raw and dirty sex…the feel that a good hate fuck gives them, which means that one way or another, they’re going to strip each other bare and enjoy one another’s body, even if that’s all they’re willing to give.

Elle McGray is quite the complex female; she comes across as a hardass – one who uses her intimidating demeanor and closed off personality in order to not allow anyone to truly know her or what she’s been through and continues to deal with in her personal life. She’s a woman scorned and her embarrassment and anger in regards to her ex-husband’s dalliances forces her to stick to loveless relationships – ones meant for purely physical release and nothing else.

But the true Elle – the one that no one takes the time to see beneath her armored façade – is an emotional mess…a hollowed woman who protects what’s left of her heart and self-esteem by not letting her guard down for anyone. Her Dr. Ice persona allows her to keep control and set boundaries for everyone in her life, and up until this point, Elle’s been able to stay true to her rules of living, but when Lane Cannon sets his sights on her and forces her to give up control, challenging her to open up to him and give him more than her body, the struggle to remain the guarded woman who she is with her holier than thou attitude and her abrasive personality is pushed to its limits, forcing both Elle and Lane to be honest and real about who they are and what they want from each other.

Lane Cannon is sex personified, which is quite fitting for his profession as a sex surrogate at The Grove. And even though he’s judged for the legitimacy of his specialty, he takes pride in his work in a way that helps him to put his past “profession” behind him and come to terms with how his escort days defined him and made him the man he is today. But he refuses to be used ever again, so Elle’s treatment of him as a way to protect herself is unacceptable and while Lane’s all for playing kinky games, he plays them on his terms and with him in control – something that he forces Elle to understand from the very beginning.

The layered dynamics of Elle and Lane’s relationship fascinated me right from the start of By The Hour. They seem about as incompatible as they come, but for some reason, as long as Elle doesn’t belittle him in order to save face, they connect in significant ways – ones that go beyond their physical attraction and speak to the heart of who they are. There were a number of times that I thought Lane was going to be done with Elle and I was actually rooting for him to do so because her treatment of him was despicable, and even though Roni Loren makes it clear why Elle acts the way she does, I had a difficult time seeing past her hurtful words and cold attitude.

What I found most interesting about the set-up of the story line is that Loren doesn’t provide Elle’s complete backstory all at once. Readers understand she was betrayed by her husband, and it destroyed her in multiple ways, but the extent of the betrayal and the necessary insights aren’t unearthed until further into the story, which actually worked really well because it allows readers to adjust their perspective of Elle and truly see her and understand her in all that Loren shows us about Elle, and as a reader, I like to be able to make my own judgments not be told what I need to know about the characters. For me, Loren’s approach added to the depth of Elle’s character and helped explain why she became the woman she did but actually is so much more than what readers initially saw.

By The Hour is a complex, sultry, and frustrating story, but it’s frustrating in all of the best ways because the evolution of Elle and Lane’s relationship is quite contrary at the beginning and then grows and expands but also backpedals due to thoughtless comments and actions and by the time readers get to the end, they have a clear vision of who Elle and Lane are and why despite their differences, they give one another everything they need and desire.

Who would have thought that a New York City Socialite would have to go all the way to East Merritt, Alaska, to experience a “different” kind of man – one who isn’t self-absorbed and solely concerned with “getting” his.

But after getting to know Valentine French a little better and realizing that she tends to march to the beat of her own drum, it’s easy to see that she has the means, the determination, and the passion for men, dating, and good sex to head into the Alaskan wilderness totally unprepared but nonetheless thrilled with the endless possibilities when it comes to the manly men East Merritt has to offer.

Valentine’s Alaskan experience is actually a social dating experiment – one that allows her to choose from a bounty of “real” men and share the play-by-play of her dates with the loyal readers of her sex advice column – Valentine’s Couch.

But never in Valentine’s wildest dreams did she think she’d find everything she wasn’t looking for in Logan Burke – the chief of police and one heck of a good looking, funny, honest, and caring man.

Logan and Val definitely complement each other in significant ways – one being their willingness to try new things when it comes to sex and their sexual adventures clearly show the trust they have in one another even though they’ve only known each other for a few weeks.

Sex in the Sticks has low angst, high steam, and entertaining hijinks, and while readers will easily guess the potential problems that become points of contention for this couple who has lived quite the opposite lifestyles, it’s made quite clear that what Logan and Val are building is a relationship unlike any either has ever had and as long as they take two seconds to think things through and see the big picture, their misunderstandings and nondisclosure of pertinent details won’t destroy their feelings for one another or the hope that Val’s social dating experiment actually becomes her reality.

After meeting Brad Sinclair in ShutterGirl, I knew that readers were in for one hell of a ride when CD Reiss told his full story because it was clear that we only saw what Reiss wanted us to see in him – his surface level wants and needs, and despite Brad’s in your face Hollywood demeanor, I wanted to know the man beneath the cocky veneer and notorious playboy antics…the man who worked and played his ass off in order to get out of his small town in Arkansas and take Hollywood by storm with his good looks, talent, and star power.

And, knowing the kind of writer Reiss is, I knew Brad’s story wouldn’t be the typical Hollywood romance because even with a few stereotypical bombshells that are dropped in Brad’s lap, his reactions, the work he puts in as well as the heroine who works by Brad’s side ensuring his daughter’s safety and happiness create a complex and unique spin on the single dad/nanny trope, proving that Reiss isn’t afraid to shake things up and think outside the box, illustrating exactly why she has so many loyal readers.

At face value, Brad Sinclair is a train wreck when it comes to Hollywood living. He parties too hard and too much and he definitely goes overboard when it comes to bedding all of the willing women who throw themselves at him on a daily basis. So, it stands to reason that his transition from notorious manwhore to single dad wasn’t going to be easy, and it’s definitely not smooth sailing even with an arsenal of help because Brad can’t seem to figure out how to hold on to his career while also taking care of his 5 year old daughter…until one person seems to lay it out in a way that shows Brad exactly what he needs to change in order to be the person…the parent he’s meant to be.

CD Reiss does a remarkable job of illustrating the behind the scenes mechanics of the Hollywood elite and the nannies who help them raise their children while still living the lifestyle they’ve grown accustomed to…and in sharing insider secrets, readers also learn of the unprofessional and inappropriate relationships that seem to form despite both sides understanding the rules and knowing that once that line is crossed, the damage will be irreparable.

But Brad Sinclair never does anything halfway, and his reputation already precedes him, so when Cara DuMont, an extraordinary nanny with an unblemished resume, becomes Brad’s hired help, it’s not a matter of if but when he’ll act on the feelings for her that he can’t seem to zip, lock, or put away.

Cara’s conflicted feelings over her desire to give into her feelings for Brad and her need to remain professional is clearly captured in her internal musings but what’s also clear is the fact that what she fantasizes about when it comes to Brad and what she sees in him that she hasn’t seen in any one of her other employers is something she can’t let go of, which puts her in even more of a precarious position when she realizes that those desires are reciprocated and Brad can’t help but find ways to keep her with him.

Brad’s 5 year old daughter seems to be the smallest of the bombshells that are dropped throughout the story, and while Nicole clearly shakes up Brad’s life and forces him to change some of his ways, the other shocking revelations that surface actually do more to wreak havoc on Brad’s Hollywood life, clearly illustrating that what someone wants and what someone needs are entirely two different ideas.

CD Reiss has created a socially elite world filled with secrets, lies, and far too many hanger-ons who capture just the right shot or hear just enough information to force the rich and beautiful to either throw money at the situation to make it go away or face the repercussions of their actions with all of their “private” business shared on the pages of tabloid magazines, soiling their careers and potentially destroying their relationships in the process.

And with the recent nanny scandals in modern society, it’s interesting to see it from their perspective, shedding light on people’s culpabilities and reaffirming that what happens in Hollywood isn’t all meant to be played out on the big or small screen.

The front door opened. I expected a housekeeper or butler, but it was the actor himself.

I hadn’t forgotten how beautiful he was; I’d just chosen not to think about it.

“Ma’am,” he said. Southern boy. Parents together. Christian elementary. Public secondary. Two years at USC Drama. Dates his costars for a month after the wrap party, then moves on. Poring through the trades and making calls, I’d discovered he’d spend at least eight of the next twelve months overseas doing action movies, but most had postproduction in town.

“Mr. Sinclair,” I said, holding my hand out. “Nice to see you outside a bathroom.”

He shook my hand.

I’d shaken plenty of famous hands attached to gorgeous men, but my imagination was sparked by the way his fingers slid against mine to grasp them and the way our palms pressed together. My mind clouded over with ripped sheets, hard muscles, and soft skin.

“Pleasure’s mine,” he said and my brain skipped like a trip on a cracked sidewalk over the word pleasure.

He didn’t give me the oversincere hand-over-clasp to show me how damn happy he was to see me, but there was something intimate about that half a second.

Just a consultation.

I followed him into the house. Dora Donovan had designed it. Looked like her with her faux-midcentury white couch and shag rug. That wasn’t going to work with playdates unless he wanted to keep an upholsterer on staff.

We went through the living room to a smaller room with a pool table smack in the middle. It had a stained glass Budweiser lamp over it and was racked for nine-ball. Dora Donovan had nothing to do with this room, for sure.

“Wanna sit?” He held a chair out for me. The glass-topped table was just inside the open patio doors and was set with iced tea.

I sat.

“I’m not a date,” I said kindly, indicating the iced tea setup. “Just so you know. You don’t have to do things like hold the chair for me.”

“Habit, I guess.”

He sat opposite me.

“Chivalry is nice. But with the nanny, whomever you hire, it can be misconstrued.”

He smirked a little, as if misconstruing his own thoughts. I cleared my throat and pulled my jacket closed.

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.
