“Stop reading my mind,” she whispered.

“No.”

The softly growled word was the only warning she got before his arms snaked around her waist and pulled her to him. “There hasn’t been a single night since you left that I haven’t thought about the way you felt in my arms the first time I’d slept longer than a few hours in years.”

She gasped.

His eyes flared. “That right there—that’s why I’m never going to stop reading your thoughts, baby. No matter how well Alec taught you to hide, knowing that even now, after all this time, you still can’t hide all your feelings from me completely? That’s the one thing that’ll help me sleep tonight. It still won’t be for longer than an hour or two, but at least in that short time, I’ll have something to hold onto again.”

Tidal waves of emotion slammed into her, one after another, crashing through every last barrier she’d built around herself, stripping away every protective layer she’d hid behind for the last seven years. Until all that was left was her.

A low, harsh sound broke free from Caine.

Feelings and thoughts, fears and hopes—she bared it all to him.

For a while, the internal battles they each faced with themselves kept them both cemented where they stood.

“Lock the deadbolt.”

These overprotective demands just shouldn’t be this sexy.

She shut the door and laid her palm against it.

I was stunned into silence. Masters Among Monsters is the perfect series title for the dark and dangerous world that Ella Frank creates and places her mythological characters in because there’s an established hierarchy at play, both within each group and amongst the gods, demigods, and vampires, and all three play an intricate role in a plan that was conceived to annihilate the very demons the gods created.

It’s clear from the beginning of the series that the gods are meant to be seen as the masters of this world, and due to their destructive and demonic acts, the vampires are the beasts the gods rule over, but as the events play out in the three books, the lines between who is a master and who is a monster begin to blur, causing the three heroes to exert their free will and force extreme actions to be taken to reset the plans that were destined to occur, placing their existence in the hands of the very gods Leo, Elias, and Paris no longer trust.

Of the three, Leo has clearly chosen his side when Thanos’ story begins; Leo is devoted to his two vampires and their blood link is an unbreakable bond that he cherishes despite the disapproval of a great many people. Elias is the wild card of the group because his role in the vampire genocide has been known for many years and he has been trained in how to deal with their powers and protect himself against their mind invasions, but the gods never anticipated how thoroughly Isadora would own Elias and what he would willingly do in order to remain with the woman he loves. Paris is quite the walking contradiction because his demeanor and actions do not align with the god who brought him into this world, and while he is perceived to be weak and docile, he actually proves to be the strongest of the three when it comes to what he sees as his purpose and his need to protect the disfigured Thanos from himself as well as his Ancient.

As Frank takes readers further into the darkened underbelly of society and illustrates the connections that were meant to destroy the entire vampire race and the history of how all players came to be, loyalties change, causing Leo, Elias, and Paris to question their destiny and search for ways to barter with fate in such a way that will allow them to remain with the very “monsters” they were brought into this world to vanquish.

Being a high school English teacher who teaches Greek Mythology, the story line that Ella Frank creates is especially intriguing to me; she takes an already established mythological world and weaves in her own conceptions, ones that intricately tie into their foundation. Each relationship between the god, demi-god, and vampires that Frank explores has its own role and significance to the power play that seems to be occurring between the gods and vampires, and the choices that are made will universally alter the three groups because they seek such different outcomes.

Alasdair, Isadora, and Thanos’ books may focus on their respective relationships with who they’re involved with, but each one also brings the other key players into the story, illustrating the complexity of the relationships and the steps that the gods have taken to ensure their plan is successful. There were times in the series, though, especially in Thanos’ story, where I felt like I needed more backstory and/or context in order to truly understand the depths of the bonds and what that meant for each of the characters, but overall Ella Frank provides great insight, giving a voice to each group of characters, allowing them to show readers why and how things changed when they did and what the cost of those changes might mean for them and those they’ve grown to loathe and love. 

The conclusion of the Masters Among Monsters series may not be what readers hope or even perceive as a possibility, but I adored the Epilogue because, in a way, it restores the balance of things…it allows all the players involved in the fated circumstances to begin anew and allow the gifts that they received to cleanse them and develop bonds that ended up altering the dynamics of everyone involved.

I head down the hall, and that man was right. I can’t miss the office door with Charles Masters, CEO in bold, white letters. When I knock, no one answers, so I let myself in to do as the man told me to do—leave it on the desk.

What I’ve learned most from Tia Louise’s heroines in her Dirty Players series as well as her newest release, Dirty Dealers, is that in order to survive…in order to fight for what they have as well as who they need to provide for, there’s nothing they won’t do…even if that means getting their hands dirty in a way that they might not be able to recover from or might not be able to repay.

Kass Kroft has debts to pay and a brother to protect and because of those circumstances, she finds herself beholden to a man who wants to destroy innocent lives and use her as the tool to accomplish his evil plans. Like Zelda and Ava, Kass finds herself in an impossible situation because not only is she risking her own life in order to keep her brother safe, but she’s also putting herself in the path of THE MAN from her past…the one who still lives in her dreams…the one who she gave everything to…the one who now becomes a target in a deadly game that she has no choice but to play.

If there’s one thing Tia Louise has shown readers about Logan Hunt, it’s the fact that he was born to be a protector; with his strength, focus, and control, he’s able to outmaneuver the dirty dealers who look to benefit from the downfall of the noble family, but what he never anticipated was being played by the one woman who owned his heart six years ago and who he wants to give everything to again.

She has no choice but to carry out her orders, even though she knows it’s wrong, and she could wind up losing everything that she’s always wanted. It’s exactly due to her purity and tender heart that there’s a chance others will see who she really is and what her cooperation is/will cost her.

There’s definitely explosive chemistry between Logan and Kass when they reunite, and despite the years that have passed, even if dirty dealing put them in each other’s lives again, both are determined to protect the other as well as prove that what they felt all those years ago has never left their hearts or their bodies.

Dirty Dealers is quite the game of cat and mouse, and even though the main dealings pit the good guys against the bad ones, there are other variables to the game that are just as important to the end result, making both Logan and Kass’ assignments the events that will either solidify the bond between them or force Logan to deliver swift justice to the woman he can no longer trust.

Kass is not your typical heroine, which is exactly why I adore her. The way she tackles the obstacles in her way speaks to the type of fighter she is, and although she hasn’t made the best choices, her circumstances dictated her actions, and I can’t fault her for doing what she thought was best, even though it ends up taking her down a dangerous path because it leads her back to Logan Hunt.

Logan and Kass’ story is a sexy, suspenseful journey; I love the world Tia Louise created with her royals and those who protect them, and I can’t wait for more from these feisty heroines and sinful alpha males!

Urban Dictionary defines a Casanova as “a smooth-talking charmer who has mastered the art of finding, meeting, attracting and seducing beautiful women into the bedroom. Once he accomplishes his goal, he leaves the woman in fear of having a relationship and proceeds to find his next conquest.”

At face value, Brett Walker is definitely a ladies’ man, manwhoring himself around Whiskey Key, Florida, charming women out of their panties and forgetting their names while tarnishing the Walker family name and causing rumors to abound as to his lack of respect for women and his inability to do anything but royally mess things up.

And while Lani Montana experiences Brett’s assholery in epic proportions, when she sets her eyes and her ears on him after being away from Whiskey Key for 8 years, she’s also privy to his moments of generosity and his closeted nice guy attributes that his family and the people of Whiskey Key rarely see or don’t give him a chance to show them, always reverting back to his rude, selfish, and disrespectful persona because that’s all anyone ever expects from Brett.

Lani Montana may have labeled Brett as a Casanova, but her job is to actually clean up his image. She’s supposed to give the townspeople an inside look at who Brett is beyond his philandering and untoward actions. As a freelance journalist, though, she’s all about the truth, and she refuses to write anything fictional about the life and work of Brett Walker, but as she spends more time with him and gets to know this new version of Brett, fact and fiction start to blend together, causing Lani to question exactly who Brett is and what secrets he’s hiding from her and from the people of Whiskey Key – ones that might further taint the Walker legacy and others that just might prove that Brett is more than the townspeople or his family has every given him credit for, especially those closest to him who have no idea who he really is.

I love how Emma Hart illustrates the differences between someone who’s in the spotlight who screws up his life and someone who hides in the shadows, committing the exact same acts but not having to face the inquisition due to where he falls on society’s ladder. There’s something to be said about how much gossip and the media amplify acts of indiscretions when it comes to certain people because while some of Brett’s truths are embarrassing and clearly illustrate a man unhinged, they’re not ones that should make him the town pariah or place a large C on his chest to show everyone around how much of a dog he is when it comes to the opposite sex. What it comes down to is the fact that Brett is from an affluent family and the expectations for said family are ones that a 17-21 year old man will have difficulty reaching, especially when the one person who made him better…who saw him for more than just his last name left town with no explanation and no goodbye all those years ago.

The girl who left Florida due to a broken heart is not the same one who returns; Lani found her voice and her backbone when she moved on from her childhood crush, and while she doesn’t care to break open old wounds, she also isn’t going to allow herself to be seduced by the one person who shredded her in ways she’s still recovering from…too bad Brett’s not going to give her a chance to disappear again, though, and regardless of the amount of sass and dirty looks Lani points Brett’s way, they’re going to settle their issues once and for all, even if it means Brett needs to tell her every single truth about his life since she left and what it means for them now that she’s back.

Casanova is another thoughtful and steamy read from Emma Hart. I love the small town setting of the story and all of the idiosyncrasies that comes with it. Lani and Brett are a perfect pair because they call each other out and turn one another own quite simply by being in the same room together, and they epitomize the idea that there’s a thin line between love and hate.

It was that or she was laughing at me…

“I have no idea why I’m laughing,” she breathed. Every other word was broken by a terrible attempt at keeping her laughter inside. “But thank you. Whatever you did, I needed that.”

“Happy to be of service.”

“I’m sure you are.”

Slowly, I raised my eyebrows. “Was that an innuendo?”

She ran her hand through her hair, pushing it right back from her face, and rested her hand behind her neck. “No, but of course you took it like that.”

“If it sounds like an innuendo…”

“It’s proof that you have a dirty mind, Brett Walker. Nothing else.”

“I don’t need the innuendo to prove that.”

“As evidenced by your obsession with my boots.”

“Ah,” I smiled, “The fuck me boots.”

Her jaw dropped, but she was kind of smiling too. “Fuck me boots? You call my boots the fuck me boots?”

“Shit. Did I say that out loud?”

She nodded, desperately fighting a smile, which only made me smile wider. “Loud and clear, I’m afraid.”

“Look,” I said, lighting pulling on a bit of her hair. “If you wear boots that go up to your knees with heels, I can only assume you’re inviting me to fuck you, okay? That’s why they’re fuck me boots.”

“Okay, now this makes sense.” She dropped her hand to her lap and blinked at me. “I wore those boots to our disastrous first meeting. Is that why you’re bugging me with the dirty stuff? My boots invited you to fuck me?”

“No. I’m ‘bugging’ you ‘with the dirty stuff’ because I want to fuck you. The boots are a bonus.”

“You…want to fuck me.”

I stared at her flatly. “Yes, Lani. I want to fuck you, and you have no idea how many ways I’ve imagined it.”

“Imagined it,” she echoed.

“You’re much less sassy when you’re tired. I’m not sure I like it. This conversation would be way more fun if you were tearing me a new one.”

That snapped her out of what I could only describe as a daze. “All right. Fine. I’m going to bed. Alone,” she added as she stood. “Thank you for your sweater. I’ll add that to my list of Brett’s Gentlemanly Things.”

I got up and took the sweater from her. “Look, I’ll even open the door for you.” I stepped around her and clasped the door handle. I slowly turned it and opened the door.

“Nice.” She’d apparently found her sass again, because the word was injected with a cocky sarcasm. “Goodnight, Brett.”

“Lani?”

She stopped when she was one step inside the door. “Yeah?”

I swept my arm around her and spun her against the open front door. My grip on it kept it firmly in place as her back collided with the wood, and she inhaled at the exact same moment. Lust burned through my veins, and I took one step in front of her, pinning her to the door.

“What are you doing?” Her voice was breathy, and as I dropped my gaze to her chest, the quickness of her breathing was impossible to miss. Her chest was rising and falling like crazy.

I dipped my head so my lips ghosted over her cheek on their way to her ear. “In case you were wondering,” I murmured against her earlobe. “Against the door is one of the ways I’ve imagined fucking you. With your legs around my waist, your nails in my shoulders, and your wet pussy hugging my cock.”

She exhaled on a shudder. “Asshole,” she whispered.
