Excerpt

The alarm on Victoria’s cell phone goes off. She’s set it to go off every night at eleven forty-five so she can get home by midnight. Tonight when it sounds, she groans and drops her head to my chest in frustration.

I lift her head with both hands and bring her gaze to mine. “I know you have to go, but before you do, one more lesson from the teacher.” I run a thumb across her soft, full lips and then lower my head to allow my lips to take its place. The kiss is soft and lingering, and just as I believe it to be ending, my awkward girl surprises me and opens her lips ever so slightly to allow me to taste her sweet mouth and tongue fully. She steps back even as she kisses me more.

“Mmm.” She breaks our kiss. “I don’t want to go, but I have to.”

“I understand.” I turn her toward her dance bag and give her a little nudge. The last thing I want to do is have her mother get upset and refuse to let her out at night to rehearse, or worse, tell Mariette.

She slings her bag over her shoulder and blows me a kiss.

I catch it. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Yes, tomorrow. No boxing tonight.”

“Don’t worry, Miss Awkward. I have no desire to box tonight.”

About the Authorchristine_AuthorBio.jpg

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Hollywood Prince by Kim Karr
Publication Date: January 2nd, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

HOLYWOOD PRINCE_eBook for promos.jpg

Synopsis

Brooklyn James should know better.

Born into Hollywood royalty, the brooding prince has a reputation as being a player. A manwhore. A womanizer.

Adoring fans are his thing.

His best friend’s little sister is not.

Even thinking about her the way he is isn’t cool.

Not cool at all.

And yet every time she pouts those sexy lips at him, she turns him inside out. Makes him harder than he’s ever been. Drives him to the brink of insanity.

Amelia Waters has always idolized her big brother, and the last thing she wants to do is disappoint him.

Falling for her brother’s ex-roommate is off-limits.

She knows this, but she can’t help herself.

The way Brooklyn looks at her with those smoldering blue eyes makes her wet in an instant. Turns her into a shivering, shaking mess of sexual frustration. And soon the idea of spreading her legs for him is the only thing she can think about.

She wants him.

He wants her.

When they finally decide to give in to their insane attraction, they agree it will remain between them. That their illicit affair will be short-term. No strings. No baggage. No messy ending.

But when the first night of mind-blowing sex leads to another, and another still, how long can the endless hookups go on before Amelia’s brother finds out? Or worse yet, before feelings develop?

Brooklyn and Amelia know they need to walk away from each other before either of those things happens.

The problem is doing it.

Talk about a mess.

Hollywood Prince is a sexy, standalone, contemporary romance about a bad boy and the off-limits girl who steals his heart.

Review

“Marry him, marry me

I’m the one that loved you baby can’t you see?

Ain’t got no future or family tree

But I know what a prince and lover ought to be

I know what a prince and lover ought be”

Kim Karr chose the perfect song to illustrate the predicament that Amelia Waters finds herself in, in Karr’s newest release Hollywood Prince. But just because Amelia has two men vying for her affection, in quite differing ways, this is not a story that includes cheating, because in my perspective, there was never really a choice; Amelia’s circumstances and her need to breakout of her Good Two Shoes lifestyle leads her to California and to Brooklyn James, and despite Brooklyn’s womanizing, bad boy reputation as well as his and Amelia’s decision to keep their relationship a secret and only about sex, the chemistry between them and the their connection outside of physical intimacy is something neither of them have ever had, which makes their story one where its ending will not end without heartbreak.

Brooklyn James may have a tarnished crown and “frog-like” tendencies when it comes to the opposite sex, but Kim Karr does a great job of illustrating who Brooklyn is beneath the panty-dropper and ex-reality star persona. He knows making a play for Amelia behind his best friend’s back makes him a shitty friend, but Brooklyn can’t let go of his desires for her and Amelia wants him just as much, so the only solution for them is to ride out their chemistry in a way that hopefully burns it out by the time Amelia needs to return to New York.

Amelia Waters may be lost due to her recent family discoveries and she may want to break free from a life that hasn’t truly been lived for herself and experience a little bit of bad, but her feelings for Brooklyn don’t stem from his playboy behavior. Over a decade ago, Brooklyn became Amelia’s once “Prince Charming” and regardless of what Amelia thinks her relationship with Brooklyn signifies now and the fact that she believes he’s her “Mr. Oh-So-Wrong,” Brooklyn fulfills every aspect of a contemporary Prince Charming – traits that Amelia may not have considered being a part of her perfect man, but when it comes in the package that is Brooklyn James, they’re the only qualities that truly matter.

Hollywood Prince is a sexy and swoon worthy read that takes the concept of a fairy tale and modernizes it in a way that proves that perfection isn’t possible and that even tarnished and broken princes can be exactly the man a woman needs in order to experience all aspects of life that are worth living.

Brooklyn James is definitely not a frog and Kim Karr reminds readers that Prince Charming doesn’t have to be the ultimate man who provides the best possible chance for a happily ever after; he just has to be the man who makes a woman feel loved, cherished, and everything he’s ever wanted.

About ROCK CHICK REAWAKENING

From New York Times bestselling author, Kristen Ashley, comes the long-awaited story of Daisy and Marcus, Rock Chick Reawakening. A prequel to Kristen’s Rock Chick series, Rock Chick Reawakening shares the tale of the devastating event that nearly broke Daisy, an event that set Marcus Sloan—one of Denver’s most respected businessmen and one of the Denver underground’s most feared crime bosses—into finally making his move to win the heart of the woman who stole his.

Excerpt

Her face was stunning. Wide smile. White teeth and a good deal of them. Big eyes. Elegant nose. Soft cheekbones. All of this she highlighted with the expert use of makeup from what was clearly a gift of superior genes into something that shone like a Hollywood starlet.

A starlet of a stripper who looked a good deal like Dolly Parton, who also likely got home the night before, earliest, three in the morning, and was right then, only hours later, back on the stage helping another girl by teaching her some moves.

“Marcus, brother,” Smithie’s voice came at him. “You got a problem with the way I do business, and I give you reason to have that problem, then we have a talk. I don’t give you that reason, we don’t have conversations like this one. That’s our deal.”

Marcus listened to him while he watched Daisy talking to the other girl and then she ran across the stage, doing it gracefully in platform sandals, her stone-washed jeans tight on her ass and hips and all the way down her legs. Still, after she ran the four steps, she launched herself high, grabbing on to the pole at least three feet higher than she was, her body swinging around by just her hands.

When the swing ended, she climbed up the pole, hand over hand. Doing this quickly, taking herself up another four feet, she flipped her bottom half over, wrapping her skinny legs around the pole. She dropped back, her hair flowing down, and with her only hold on the pole being her legs, she arched her back and slid down slowly, somehow circling the pole as she did it.

She ended this doing a layout with her hands on the floor, her legs in slow and controlled movements coming over her head one after the other. Her hands pushing off, she was up.

Standing straight with perfect posture.

Review

I am first and foremost a Rock Chick! It was Kristen Ashley’s Rock Chick series that solidified my love of the badass alpha male and the righteous heroine as well as the idea of how a happily ever after occurs amidst the pain, chaos, and darkness of life. Indy will always be my favorite Rock Chick because it all started with her and Lee, but if there’s ever been a member of the Rock Chick Nation that I’ve always wanted to know more about it has to be Daisy because underneath her sweetness and her sass is a tale that needed to be told so that readers could fully understand what it means to be a Rock Chick and the hellish ways that some women have to go through in order to get to a castle and a man who’s meant for only her.

Daisy’s upbringing was not one made of fairy tales, but if she had had a fairy godmother, it would have been Miss Annamae – a southern woman who saw Daisy as the good girl that she is and gave her a way out of her deplorable situation. And even though Daisy’s choices might not have been ones Miss Annamae would have had Daisy make, Daisy never let go of Miss Annamae’s southern lady lessons or the idea that being herself regardless of how anyone cuts her down is the only way she can keep her head held high when everything and everyone else around her wants her to flounder and fail.

The Daisy readers have grown to adore through her interaction with the other Rock Chicks is exactly the one that Kristen Ashley reintroduces us to in Rock Chick Reawakening, and she’s just as full of sparkle and sass in her earlier years as she is as Marcus Sloan’s wife, maybe even more so because Daisy had to fight like hell to not act like or feel like the white trash others tried to tell her she was.

Daisy definitely redefines herself once she becomes involved with Marcus, but what’s solidified in this prequel is that she’s always been a larger-than-life woman – one who isn’t afraid to be her own person whether it be in how she dresses, how she talks, or how she commands a stripper pole. Daisy doesn’t put on an act for anyone and regardless of the darkness that surrounded her life, she always found a way to live in the light, even if it was only a slit of goodness.

Marcus Sloan has always been portrayed as a no nonsense business man – one who delves out his own sense of righteousness and feels no remorse in doing so. He’s always been on the wrong side of the law, but he’s also been a devoted husband who’s always willing to give Daisy whatever she wants because he knows she deserves it. Readers get to see another side of Marcus in Rock Chick Reawakening and through his own words, we see the man who knew what he wanted and went about claiming it or in this case her – the woman he’s waited to come into his life for decades.

With Marcus’ help, Daisy learned to build castles that sparkle and shine, and she built a life with him full of love, laughter, and honey bunches of oats, making their life together as sugary sweet as possible.

Daisy and Marcus’ story reawakened my love for the Rock Chick series, and in a way, brought the series full circle, allowing readers to fully understand what it takes to be a full fledged Rock Chick and how there’s no better group to be a part of because not only do you have a kickass group of girlfriends, but you also have the Hot Bunch and there’s nothing better than a group of alpha males who dominate and devote their lives to the girl who owns him body and soul.

A Message from Kristen

Dear Reader,

I’m beside myself with glee that this prequel to my Rock Chick series has been unleashed! There was some time when I never thought I’d write it. When I couldn’t be in that terrible place with Daisy. But I’m oh-so glad that she called to me, demanding her story be told so she could give it to me and now I can give it to you! I loved every moment spent with Daisy and Marcus. And I hope you do too!

kristen-ashley-headshotAbout Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Excerpt

Finally, fifteen minutes after we said we’d meet, Logan Brantley walks into the tapas bar. Every curse word known to woman—and several I make up on the fly—flash through my brain.

This isn’t fair. Logan Brantley is even sexier when he’s not dressed in camo and carrying a big gun. More than one head swings in his direction. Women flip their hair and uncross and re-cross their legs as he steps up to the hostess stand.

A shaft of possessiveness lights up inside me, right along with nervous energy and my pounding heart. Back off, bitches. He’s not here for you.

I hear the low rumble of his deep drawl when he speaks to the hostess. She gestures in my direction, and he turns. Piercing blue eyes find me at the table where a lone water glass sits in front of me.

Liquid courage should definitely have been on the menu. Why didn’t I order a drink?

Because I’m an idiot. Because I thought I could handle this.

Now my heart is hammering so loud, my voice will probably be inaudible, or even worse—quaver when I speak.

Logan walks toward me with long, sure strides. He’s taller than I realized. And broader. And bigger. Everywhere. He’s wearing a black Henley that stretches across his chest, leaving no doubt of the fact that the man is built. And his jeans. Jesus. They’re worn and snug in all the right places.

The picture I found was clearly not recent, and it’s not just the fact that his brown hair is longer and shaggier. He’s one of those men who age well.

Logan stops in front of me when he reaches the tall bar table. He says nothing as his gaze drops to the toes of my boots and drags up every inch of my body.

“You’re a hard woman to find.”

Excerpt

“Are you absolutely sure you want to stay here?” Carly frowned as she brought out a blanket twenty minutes later. “The couch is pretty small. I’m not sure you’ll be comfortable on it.”

Bran was one hundred percent sure he wouldn’t be, but that wasn’t the point. He tugged his shirt over his head and folded it neatly. “I’ve slept in worse places. And I think it’s best I stay here tonight. Unless you want to come home with me.”

He knew she wasn’t going to take that option, but it would be nice. If Drew and Riley and Hatch met her, got to know her, they wouldn’t be so worried about her. All he’d had to do was spend a couple of hours with her to know that she was a deeply loyal woman. All he needed to do was prove he was worthy of that loyalty. She’d been bitten before and she was shy, but the man who gained her trust again would get everything from her.

She deserved to have someone who would watch her back, and that included ensuring that she could sleep the rest of the night. What little of it was left.

If someone showed up on her doorstep, he would take care of them. As viciously as he possibly could. He still intended to write her that check. He would do it because it would bring her peace of mind, but he was going to make sure none of them ever threatened her again. He would handle them in a way that would ensure her safety.

She shook her head. “You said your place is out in Palm Coast. That’s forty minutes away. I have to be at work pretty early in the morning.” She turned and started working on the couch, but not before he’d caught her staring at his chest. She smoothed out a sheet over the leather. “Why all the way out there? Why wouldn’t you set up here in St. Augustine?”

He would have to thank his brother-in-law for all the workouts. It was how they’d bonded. Case Taggart liked to lift weights and he’d brought Bran into his daily routine the last time he was in town. It wasn’t like Bran had been out of shape before, but Case’s daily regime had taken his lanky frame and honed it to something strong and masculine. He wished he could tell her how soft and sexy she looked in her pj’s. She had a robe wrapped around her, but every now and then it slipped open, revealing creamy skin and breasts he would love to get his hands on. He’d spent the majority of his evening watching women strip, but it was Carly in her pink tank top and perfectly respectable pajama bottoms that had his cock engaged. “We have some friends who have a condo out there and it’s outfitted with the best tech possible both computer-wise and security. Also, we thought it would be best if we were close but not too close. Patricia knew our parents quite well. One new person in her life who reminds her of old enemies won’t cause too much stress but if she were to see me and Drew, or worse, Hatch, she would definitely be suspicious. We’re simply being careful.”

“You have your mother’s coloring, but you don’t really look like her. You look more like your dad,” Carly said as she worked a pillow into a soft-looking pillowcase.

“I’m taller than he was, a bit more built. I looked more like him when I was smaller. Take off about thirty pounds of muscle, cut my hair into a military buzz, and put some glasses on me, and I look quite like him. Of course I’ve been told my father had an air of unmistakable genius about him that I don’t have.” Not that Hatch had put it that way. He’d explained that most people didn’t remember Benedict for his looks. They remembered his brilliant brain. “Drew is most like him. Another reason I thought it was better for me to go in instead of him. I think Drew would remind Patricia of our father.”

“I don’t know about that. She’s not very observant. One of the things you need to know about her is that she’s a narcissist. She doesn’t care about anything but herself and her bottom line.” She looked up at him. “Your brother is the man behind 4L?”

Naturally everyone was impressed with a thirty-four-year-old billionaire. “He is. I need you to understand that we have resources that we’ll use to take care of you. You’ll have a job at 4L if you want one. I’ll promise you that right now.”

“You need a personal assistant?” she said, her lips curling slightly.

He frowned because he hadn’t thought she’d ask that question. “No. I don’t really need one, but I promise I’ll find something for you. You won’t be left out in the cold. 4L is a big company and we own a lot of other companies. You would have your pick.”

Actually, Ellie could use a new PA. That wouldn’t be a bad fit. Ellie would be good to Carly and Bran spent a lot of time in New York. He could see her from time to time. He would have to think about it. He didn’t mention it, though, because Ellie’s last assistant had been brutally murdered in front of her. It wouldn’t give Carly great faith in them as a group.

She settled the pillow down and smoothed out the blanket. “I don’t know how I feel about a new job. Not that I’m not happy at the thought of keeping my house, but being a personal assistant wasn’t exactly my life plan. I wanted to write cookbooks. Well, I wanted to start out by editing them and work my way up.”

“It sounds like you want to be a chef.”

Her head shook slightly. “No. It’s different. I don’t want my own restaurant or to be in charge of a kitchen. I want to work at a lifestyle magazine. I love looking at decorating trends and cooking trends. A chef tends to focus on one type of cuisine. I want to try them all, not necessarily be a master at them. I like making people comfortable. At my heart, I’m a homemaker.”

Her home was lovely. The minute he’d walked in he’d felt a certain peace rush over him and not simply because the space was well decorated. Carly herself made a person feel at home.

Even when she was crying on his shoulder. She would probably run as fast as she could if she knew how much that had fed his soul. It wasn’t that he liked watching her cry. He’d enjoyed knowing he was helping her. He’d loved the way she’d clung to him, her arms tight around his body.

He probably shouldn’t tell her that, either.

I hired her to fix my company, to bring Marks Lingerie back to life. I didn’t expect her to become my friend. I didn’t expect to fall in love with her.

The first rule of business is to never touch your employees. I think there is another rule about not falling for your best friend—a rule against imagining the curves of her body, or the way her breathing would change if I pulled down her panties and unzipped my pants.

Now, I can’t wait any longer. I’m tossing out the rules.

Damn the company.

Damn our friendship.

Damn my fears.

Review

The Lawless siblings have dealt with their parents’ deaths and subsequent upbringing differently, due to where they were placed in the system, in what they experienced due to that placement and what means they had to plan their revenge on a group of people that monumentally altered their lives in the worst ways possible.

In Ruthless, readers witnessed Riley Lawless put into motion his part of the plan by seducing, manipulating, and using Ellie Stratton, but in the end, Riley realized that his feelings for Ellie and her presence in his life was worth more than any information he could acquire from her as a pawn in his quest for revenge rather than his partner.

In Satisfaction, another person involved in death of the Lawless’ parents becomes the Lawless’ siblings target, and even though Drew was supposed to be on point for this phase of the plan, Bran refuses to allow another woman to be unknowingly  used in their scheme, taking a risk of losing the “in” they need to take down Patricia Cane but also finding the woman who might just calm his rage and need for violence as well as help Bran to realize his past doesn’t have to define his present or destroy his future.

Lexi Blake does a fantastic job of fusing the romantic and suspenseful plot lines of the Lawless series together in such a seamless way that they exist as a single entity – both dependent on the other to move the storyline forward as well as explore how the love and support of a good woman can mean all the difference when it comes to moving on from a less than stellar past and a single-minded focus on revenge.

Bran Lawless is not like any of his siblings, which makes sense due to his experiences in foster care and his feelings of inadequacy and need for violence. He watched how everything played out between Riley and Ellie and what Riley’s lies almost cost him, so he goes about securing Carly Hendricks’ assistance in their revenge plot in an upfront and non-duplicitous way, which is absolutely the way to go because Carly had already been lied to and used by her ex-husband and continues to be manipulated by her boss, Patricia Cane.

But what Bran didn’t anticipate was wanting Carly for more than just a way in or as someone to warm his bed, and while he doesn’t believe they can have a future together due to the fact that he’s damaged goods and he doesn’t deserve her, the peace she gives him is something he finds essential to keeping his demons at bay for as long as she’ll have him.

Bran and Carly’s growing relationship as well as the plan to uncover proof of the players involved in their parents’ murder are intricately woven together and tell quite the story of loss, lust, love, and betrayal, providing readers with the necessary insight in order to understand why Bran sees himself as a lost cause and why Drew can’t let go of their plot of revenge regardless of the strain it seems to be putting on the Lawless siblings.

The chemistry between Bran and Carly and the way that they heal one another’s pasts, and Drew’s intelligence as well as his need to protect all of his siblings in any way he can are the two driving forces of Satisfaction, allowing Bran a way to recover from what happened to him and proving just how much the deaths of their parents as well as the dubious plot against them continues to wreak havoc on them and seems to twist and turn in ways none of them could have ever thought possible.

The truths revealed in Satisfaction definitely change things for the Lawless siblings, but what that means for Drew Lawless and his need for revenge is left unanswered and while there seems to be a clear path for him to follow…that path cannot be traversed without the help of an unlikely ally, and she might just be the one to knock Drew on his ass and have him living for so much more than the next phase in his plot to destroy all those involved in their parents murder.

5 Poison Apples Favorites for 2016

2016-5-poison-apples-reads

I read 307 books this year, so narrowing my favorites down was extremely difficult.

I was introduced to some amazing new to me authors and my tried and true authors continued to captivate me with their stories.

It was a great year of reading for me, and I can’t wait to see what books 2007 brings my way!

5 Poison Apples Favorites for 2016

Born Sinner by SL Jennings

I absolutely adored Born Sinner; S.L. Jennings does a tremendous job of showcasing each one of the Se7en as well as the other worldly beings who are called upon to help as well as hinder the group’s actions. Each demon on the team has his/her own set of beliefs and own backstory that has driven them to take on the sins of the world, and by coming together, they’ve pledged themselves to the cause and fight themselves as well as any others who don’t agree with their calling.

Nothing is black and white in this world of men and monsters, sinners and saviors, and the gray area allows for each decision and each action to be as complicated and deceptive as possible. Battle lines have definitely been drawn in the fight to not only save Eden’s soul but also to allow the Se7en a chance at returning to heaven, but even those situations are manipulated and questioned by those who pledged their lives and those who no longer have anything else to lose.

Eden and the Se7en’s story has only just begun and with the choices made by three of them at the end of the book, payback is coming and hell hath no fury like one pissed off demon!

Dark Notes by Pam Godwin

Pam Godwin is truly a gifted writer; she crafts dark, complex, and troublesome issues and experiences in a way that vividly displays the light underneath the shadows. Readers can’t help but be drawn into the dangerous and unorthodox settings she portrays because they’re so thoroughly described, and even if the scenes leave our hearts shattered and our stomachs in torment, we have a clear picture of all that occurred and the reasons for the actions.

Dark Notes is an exquisite story full of passion, surrender, and submission. It’s about learning who you are meant to be and feeling protected enough to be that person without fear. It’s about understanding how sex is supposed to be, and even if it’s still outside the norm, it’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be.

A teacher/student relationship may be inappropriate in a number of ways, but Emeric and Ivory’s bond is essential for their happiness in all facets of their lives, which makes the boundaries that try to confine them inconsequential and makes it easy for readers to look beyond their difference in age and the nature of their school connection and simply feel consumed by how much they give one another.

The Royals series by Erin Watt

Paper Princess: AMAZON ➔ http://amzn.to/1XgN1pz

Erin Watt has created an amazingly complex and intricate society of the rich and powerful. There’s a lot of players to contend with in this world, but none as commanding as the Royals. Nothing is what it seems to be and secrets and deception rule in this place because everyone seems to have something to hide as well as lose.

I was told the Royals would ruin me, and they absolutely have in the best possible ways and knowing that there are still some big revelations headed my way, I’m sure when I finish Broken Prince, I’m going to need to take a valium to continue in a society that seems to want to ruin everyone and everything in it.

Broken Prince is a superb follow-up to Paper Princess; it’s the story where Reed Royal and Ella Archer show themselves, each other, and the students at Astor Park Prep what they’re made of…it’s where Reed finds a bit of redemption through Ella and Ella finds her inner Avenger and fights back against those who look to knock her down by their words and their actions.

Book 2 in the Royals series is masterfully crafted. All of the characters are dynamically portrayed, offering much needed insight into their secrets and fears. There are significant revelations in Broken Prince that readers will have to wait for full disclosure on and although it might ruin them, it definitely will be worth it when they see how it all plays out in book 3.

Happily Ever Ninja & Beard Science by Penny Reid

Beard Science

Beard Science was a perfect story because all of Cletus’ hypotheses and conclusions were turned upside down due to one woman’s attempt to find herself and be set free from how the whole town views her. And, as Cletus learns who Jennifer truly is, readers do as well as, which helps us to recognize just how much Cletus and Jennifer complement one another and balance each other’s oddities.

Just like Cletus, there’s a method to Penny Reid’s madness and even though, at first, her pairings might not make sense to some readers, as soon as we’re allowed to investigate a bit more and truly understand the chemistry between the heroes and heroines, it’s more than clear that Reid’s conclusions are accurate and even perfect given her specimens and their attributes!

Happily Ever Ninja

Happily Ever Ninja showcases the struggles of marriage compounded by two people who extremely stubborn, pragmatic, and intelligent. Fiona and Greg’s relationship will resonate with a lot of readers and the fact that Reid was able to write a story of a couple who have been married for 14 years and not compromise their relationship by adding the usual romantic angst speaks to the type of writer Reid is and how she refuses to stay inside a box to sell books. And the most amazing thing about that is that she still sells an immense amount of books.

Can’t wait for more from the nerdy goddess!

The Holly Wood Files by Emma Hart

Twirled Bond

Droelle is out in full force in Twirled Bond, and while Drake and Noelle still have their arguments and still butt heads when they work the same case, they definitely have reached a good place in their relationship. Not only do readers get to see how big Noelle’s heart is and how much she cares for her family and friends, even when she tries not to get in the middle of everything, we also get to witness the tender moments between Drake and Noelle. The times that they are simply there for each other, giving one another exactly what they need when things get too stressed and too overwhelming. Drake and Noelle may seem like an unlikely couple but they work because their personalities complement each other, balance one another out and they have what it takes to stay happy and in love because they are 100% invested in what they have.

A Holly Woods Files book isn’t complete without Nonna’s crazy antics to marry her grandchildren off in order for them to stop living in sin or Gio’s colorful greetings to everyone who enters Noelle’s parents’ house. There’s also a side story line that deals with Bek’s conflicted feelings, which is the perfect set-up for Book 6 – Burning Bond.

I absolutely love this series! The driving force of each book is Noelle and her need for answers when it comes to a case that just won’t seem to be solved. Surrounding that plot line is a great look into relationships – both familial and friendships. The Bond family absolutely has each other’s back, even though they seem to fight more than anything else, and the bonds that Noelle has formed with the people who work for her as well as Drake continue to pull me in, in each book because besides solving the case, I’m always eager to see what drama and mystery Emma Hart delivers along the way.

Burning Bond

Holly Woods may not have Noelle’s antics to help solve the newest case to hit the quiet town, but when Bek finds herself ensconced in a Noelle sized messy situation, she moves forward knowing she has an FBI agent and a HWPD detective on her side, regardless of their Fred Flintstone behavior.

Emma Hart’s Holly Woods Files Series continues to seduce readers with the perfect blend of suspense and romance as well as fierce heroines and kickass alpha males who understand that their leading ladies are independent and head-strong, which means that they’ll fight right alongside their men, instead of cowering behind their heroes waiting for them to save the day.

Twined Bond

Twined Bond solidifies several Bond relationships and also proves to Drake and Noelle how perfect they are for one another and it also teaches them a lesson about why some risks are just too great to take; because despite the best of intentions, things can go wrong and jeopardize everything that’s essential in their lives.

Emma Hart created one hell of an outrageous, over powering, and highly entertaining family in the Bonds. No other supporting character will ever compare to Nonna and her meddling ways, and Droelle will always be one of my favorite story couples because they’re complex characters who bring out the best in one another despite annoying the crap out of each other.

Coast by Jay McLean

Coast is very much Becca’s story; Josh plays a pivotal role, which he should, but Becca is the one who needs to push herself and find where she, Josh, and Tommy can exist together, seeing one another through the lens of love, forgiveness, and compassion.

I loved Becca’s journal entries – they were raw and cathartic, exposing her tormented soul but also allowing her a means to process everything that’s happened in her life and to reconcile her past in order to move on to her future.

Jay McLean’s stories always leave a lasting impression on me because the issues that are explored and the emotions that are conveyed speak to all that life offers people on a continual basis. There’s never been a book by Jay that hasn’t captured more heart, but Becca and Josh’s duet will forever remain in my top 10 reads of all time because their story shows life’s reality and how people cope, not sugar coating anything because ultimately, there’s going to be a hell of a lot of kicking and pushing in order to figure out how to coast, and even when coasting is obtained, there’s still an uphill battle because that’s how life works; people just need to furiously fight to find the place where the land meets the sea for them and those who mean everything to them.

Wicked Heart by Leisa Rayven

Ever since being introduced to Leisa Rayven’s writing in Bad Romeo, the dramatic world she’s created and continues to use as the setting for her other books in the series has captivated me due to the complexity of her characters, their interactions, and the issues and complications that she crafts for them. It’s so easy to get swept away in Rayven’s characters’ drama and feel each and every emotion that they go through as they journey through the highs and lows of their personal relationships because every aspect of their struggle is meticulously showcased through the characters’ reactions and internal diatribes. I usually am turned off by a high level of angst, but not in Rayven’s Starcrossed series and that’s due to her ability to make it feel like all of the drama the couple goes through is necessary, allowing for growth in a way that’s realistic instead of easily manufactured. I’ll admit that sometimes my heart and stomach can’t take everything the characters struggle through, but I also know that if I can just hold on and weather the storm, just like the protagonists, the payoff will absolutely be worth it!

Collecting the Pieces by LA Fiore

I’ve always enjoyed L.A. Fiore’s stories because she creates realistic and complex characters who readers can relate to and champion for when the hero or heroine needs some encouragement or strength to persevere despite the dire circumstances or lack of faith.

Collecting the Pieces is an absolute gem of a read; it’s emotional, steamy, dramatic, and there’s also a bit of suspense in the mix, which means that it will captures readers’ hearts and minds, and if readers don’t walk away with a love for two very different men – Jake and Abel – then they’ve definitely missed out!

Legend by Katy Evans

I can’t even put into words how perfect the ending of the Real series was. Remy’s role in the book was so essential to the conclusion and I, for one, think the final fight was the ultimate homage to Riptide for being the best mentor he could be and leaving his legacy in the ring!

Katy Evans is an amazing storyteller who creates heroes and heroines whose flaws make them fighters…whose missteps make them human…whose strength and determination make them champions.

Rushing the Goal by Toni Aleo

Rushing the Goal is exactly what I wanted from Lucy and Benji’s story. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, and even when a good thing is standing right in front of someone, there’s no guarantee that it will work out, and with how much both characters have had to endure, it’s amazing that they’re even willing to put themselves out there again.

The Sinclairs are an amazing family; the support and love they show each other is unconditional and their closeness is essential for all of the highs and lows their lives have dealt with over the years.

Benji Paxton is definitely up there on my list of book boyfriends. I adore his geekiness and he’s unbelievably caring and considerate even when Lucy is giving him shit. Benji faced his demons and even though he felt undeserving for so many years, his actions with Lucy, Angie, and even Jordie prove the true man Benji is, and Lucy couldn’t ask for a better man to stand by her side and provide her daughter with the father figure she deserves.

Honor by Jay Crownover

I absolutely adored Nassir and Keelyn’s story. Jay Crownover did an amazing job of characterizing just how anti-heroic Nassir is in a way that actually allowed him to be a man of scruples just on his own terms and in his own way. The storyline was exactly what I was hoping Crownover would give her readers. Nassir has already been through hell and he continues to dominate that setting with a multitude of enemies gunning for him, but Crownover doesn’t create any elaborate power plays against him or exacerbate situations that put Nassir and Key in any greater risk than they already are just because of who they are. The issues and events that do occur are justified and make sense due to Nassir’s position and Crownover clearly illustrates how sins of the past can easily damage the present/future in ways that were never recognized, forcing Nassir to realize that there is always a choice to be made and consequences to deal with regardless of which path is taken.

Deep Redemption by Tillie Cole

Tillie Cole’s Hades Hangmen series is such a well written and captivating group of books because Cole vividly shows readers the complexity of her characters and the dark and dramatic aspects of their lives. Readers experience the unbearable and demonstrative acts that are done to her main characters right along side of them because her writing concretely illustrates everything that occurs, and while some of those moments are difficult to endure, readers can’t help but dive deeper into the darkness with the characters in order to find out how they will rise above it all and reach a place where they don’t have to battle those demons alone.

Prophet Cain’s soul is turned sinister due to the atrocities of his faith, and when he is reborn into a devilish man, he works to redeem and liberate his conscience so that he no longer has to pretend to be someone that he truly isn’t, which is exactly what redemption is.

Banking the Billionaire by Max Monroe

Thatch and Cassie’s relationship may be unconventional, but that’s why it works. They wind each other up, push each other’s buttons, and get each other off in both comical and sizzling ways. They fuck with each other in every sense of the word and as they keep each other on their toes, one upping the pranks and plotting devious ways to mess with each other, readers get to experience Thatch and Cassie’s crazy but perfect relationship turn into so much more than a prank war.

Thatcher Kelly is a whole lot of man and every part of him is delectable. He’s got swagger…he’s got charm…he’s got an insane sense of humor and he’s got a Supercock that he definitely knows how to use. But Thatch is so much more than sex and ego. He’s insanely smart, passionate, adventurous, and unique, which is why a commitment phobe like Cassie can’t help but be swept away with the “Jolly Green Giant.”

Cassie Phillips is as crazy, wild, and as inappropriate as they come, but that’s what makes her perfect for Thatch because they push each other to live life to its fullest and experience all that it has to offer. Her freak outs and ramblings fit her personality perfectly and Thatch knows how to handle every part of her quirky disposition, which isn’t easy to do, but he has his own playbook for his Crazy and he makes up the rules as he goes.

Max Monroe knows how to write witty, humorous, charming, and sexy romantic comedies, and I can’t get enough of them. Wes and Winnie are up next and I can’t wait for her to bust his balls and have her girls at her back pulling their pranks and finding any and all opportunities to mess with the loves of their lives.

Wait is definitely a story about second chances…about growth and redemption…about making one’s own choices without being afraid of the past. But it’s also about fighting to live in the light…fighting the hollowness and the worthlessness that constantly torments and finding a way to live above it.

AL Jackson mesmerizes readers with her words because she writes in a way that allows readers to FEEL everything that her characters do. The anguish, the fury, and the pain resonates off of every page and helps create an emotional connection between readers and characters – one where the characters’ struggles as well as their victories are felt in readers’ hearts and souls, allowing them to be much more than unattached spectators in a love story, which is exactly the kind of bond readers want to have with books and characters because that’s why they read them…that’s why they escape their own lives to experience others’ highs and lows and that’s what makes readers have must read authors, and I can say unequivocally that AL Jackson is one of those authors for me!

Pennie$ by Pepper Winters

Pimlico is a true Winters’ heroine because despite all that’s done to her…all that’s stolen from her…all that she must give up when she is stripped of her freedom, she’s still able to dictate her internal/external responses and have some sense of power in the weapons she chooses to wield.

For much of the story, readers must endure Pim’s mental and physical mistreatment right along with her, and while some actions are not vividly described, it’s still clear the abuse she suffers at the hand of her master. Through Winters’ powerful diction and her highly descriptive scenes, the painful process of Pim’s brokenness – both in body and soul – is felt down to the core. As every piece of her humanity is stripped away, readers can only question how much more Pim can take until her last bit of strength dwindles away with everything that she’s tried to keep locked away from her hellish existence.

So far, no one, Elder Prest is a wild card, an elusive man whose lifestyle has been inferred but not explicitly explained. It’s clear that Prest is a man of many nefarious talents, and in terms of right/wrong and good/bad, he unequivocally resides on the darker side of both. Pim intrigues him and he wants to steal her secrets and use them against her, but what that means for Pim remains unclear because her thoughts are worth more than a penny and even a dollar, so what it will take break the silence will be determined by more than just pieces of paper.

I have no idea where this series is headed, no one, but I do know that Pepper Winters’ storytelling continually leaves me spellbound, and even though Pim and Elder’s story is only just beginning, I’m already invested and intrigued with how a slave and a thief’s journey will take them to millions.

Wicked Bond & Sugar Daddy by Sawyer Bennett

Wicked Bond

Wicked Bond is a bumpy ride, but with a man like Bridger, I wouldn’t expect anything less because as toned as his body is and as hard as his head is, anything beyond what he knows and needs to remain in control is going to throw him off balance and have him questioning everything about himself. Sawyer Bennett does a fantastic job of illustrating Bridger’s struggles to come to terms with his past in order to have more than a sexual relationship with Maggie – one that is completely under his control. There were definitely times I wanted to throttle him and force him to truly see who he is beyond what he was made into by someone else’s sick and twisted preferences, but no one was going to lead him in a way that he didn’t want to go himself, so even though the path bent and curved and even digressed, everything that happened had to be done or else the bond of his past wouldn’t be broken and a new connection couldn’t be made.Get Wicked Bond now!

Sugar Daddy

I’ve always loved Sawyer Bennett’s stories, but Sugar Daddy is in a class of its own. It’s innovative and layered and there’s never a lull in the story line because readers are considering every character’s motive and actions. The connection between Sela and Beck radiates off of the pages of the story as does Sela’s need for vengeance.

Sela has infiltrated in order to trap her prey, but does she have it in her to murder one of the men responsible for her warped perception of sex and the damaged woman she’s become or does the man who has come to mean everything to her showed her a new plan for justice – happiness and love?

Retrieval & The Spiral Down by Aly Martinez

Retrieval

In Retrieval, Aly Martinez truly defines what it means to be a storyteller; readers can’t help but be lured into the story because her intensely poetic words and the complexity of her characters demand readers’ attention. There cannot be any distractions as readers consume Roman, Elisabeth, and Clare’s story; every part of it has to be felt and experienced as its most basic level because as the storyline strips its characters’ bare, exposing their hopes, fears, and ultimately, their strengths, every action they take builds from one to the next, forcing readers to keep a tenuous hold on their emotions as Roman and Elisabeth reunite two years after their life together imploded, helping them to see and understand that their undeniable connection is strong enough to repair the past and drive back the grief and bitterness as long as the present doesn’t force their hands in a way that will leave them irreparably broken.Retrieval (Part One):

The Spiral Down

The Spiral Down is Aly Martinez’s first M/M story, and let me tell you, she owned this new genre…OWNED it. The chemistry between Henry and Evan resonates off of the pages, and the passion that ignites with each sexual or loving embrace exemplifies just how good they are together and what could happen between them if Henry stopped worrying about labels and Evan gave in to breaking his rules, knowing that even if he got hurt at least he gave it his all.

Aly Martinez’s storytelling always consumes me; she has the ability to make me feel EVERY emotion throughout the duration of the text, and each and every time, I feel seduced by her words and controlled by the way the characters speak and act, wanting to understand everything that makes them who they are and witness them get their hearts desire. Henry and Evan deserve unconditional love and I adored witnessing their journey to get it, despite labels…despite their pasts…despite their fears.

The True North Series by Sarina Bowen

Bittersweet

Bittersweet is a fantastic start to Sarina Bowen’s True North series. Griffin is not your typical farm boy and there is definitely nothing wrong with that because he is every woman’s dream guy even if he’s a bit too focused on work. Audrey complements Griffin well because he feels more at ease and relaxes when she’s with him, and it’s that connection that shows them both that their lives are meant to be together even if there has to be some adjustments and compromises along the way.

Steadfast

Because Steadfast is told through both Jude and Sophie’s perspectives, readers are privy to all of the brokenness that they hide inside. They’re both in dark, empty places, and even though Sophie shouldn’t still want the man responsible for her brother’s death, Jude has always been the only person who truly listens to her and soothes her soul, so as much as she knows reconnecting with Jude is not going to end well, she’s addicted to him and needs him to feel whole again.

I have to admit that I was worried about Jude’s story. I knew that it was going to be emotional and heartbreaking, but the thought of him giving into his cravings completely tore me up before I even started reading. And, while there are extremely low points in the book where Jude has to fight with everything inside of him to beat back the cravings, Sarina Bowen realistically illustrates the struggles of an addict and the highs and lows that constantly occur just to make it to through the next minute…the next hour…the next day.

Sarina Bowen continues to pull me into her stories with her dynamically round characters and plot driven text. I felt like I was right along side both Jude and Sophie fighting to keep them above water…above the demons fighting to bring them down, and while it was a terribly difficult journey, both characters faced it head on and I was blown away by their tenacity and their heart in overcoming the obstacles that kept them apart.

I also love that the Shipleys still played a major role in helping Jude cope regardless of the fact that he no longer worked on the farm or lived under their roof. The Shipleys are definitely the kind of people I want to have on my side when my back’s against the wall because it’s clear they’ll step up no matter what.

Perfect Rage by Nashoda Rose

I’m absolutely addicted to Nashoda Rose’s storytelling and the way she weaves the darkness and light of the world in stories that are filled with both anguish, deception, and treachery as well as love, honor, and sacrifice. Rose’s characters are multifaceted; she portrays her heroes in a way that illustrates their entire character – the demons and vices they have as well as their commitment to right the wrongs that are done to the lives of those they love and the lives of the innocent.  Her heroines are strong, dedicated, and determined to stand by their man’s side even when it may not be the safe choice because they know that their world is incomplete without their other half, regardless of how imperfect he may be.

I can’t write my review for Perfect Rage without mentioning my love for Deck and his oath to get all of his men home by any means necessary. Deck has proven time and time again that he’s the man you want in your corner when your back’s against the wall and he also has shown how badass he and all of his associates are in righting the wrongs of the world. Rose’s Unyielding series may be complete, but I know that there are a number of badasses who deserve their stories to be told, and I can’t wait to see what she creates for those tortured heroes and the women who will help them heal.

Tally is a twenty-year-old single mother struggling to finish nursing school.  Has she made mistakes in life?  Sure, but her daughter isn’t one of them. She works hard, she studies even harder, and she’s only a few weeks away from graduating.

She’s living her life the best she knows how when she witnesses a near miss motorcycle accident between a car and a biker. A biker that happens to be the most talked about teacher at her college.

The moment she meets those startling blue, narrowly-escaped-death eyes, she realizes quickly that life as she knows it has changed.  No longer will she be content to let life pass her by, even if it puts everything she’s worked so hard for in jeopardy.

***

Tommy is a highly skilled doctor.  A teacher.  A veteran.  A fully-patched member of The Dixie Wardens MC.  He’s lonely, but also set in his ways.  What will it take for this man to accept that he needs to make some changes in his life? Apparently, it’ll take a guy in a truck, who’s preoccupied with his phone rather than focused on the road, nearly plowing into him on his bike at seventy miles per hour. Oh, and a twenty-something year old nursing student witnessing the entire thing from only a few feet away.

It only takes a second, a single heartbeat in time, as he looks into her worry-filled eyes to realize that he’d give anything for a single night with her.  He may lose his job in the process, but after that one incredible night turns into an amazing weekend, he knows it’s worth the risk for the promise of her forever.

“As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, your first clinical in the ER might be somewhat overwhelming. That’s to be expected. However, over time you will learn the ropes, find your stride, and realize that it isn’t some big scary place that will swallow you alive.”  Dr. Tommy—I refused to call him Dr. Bones anymore—continued.

I started doodling on my paper, drawing curls and swirls around mine and Tallulah’s names.

I’d just made a fourth star when a large tanned hand came and snatched the pen out of my hand.

“I can see now why your pen ran out of ink.” Dr. Tommy stared down at me with barely restrained impatience.

My face flushed.

If it were possible to sink into the floor in completely embarrassment, I would’ve done it.  Right then and there.

Jesus Christ.

“I think you should see me after class.” He murmured.

My brows furrowed.

I hadn’t done anything wrong.

Looking over to Hadley, she returned a sympathetic smile before turning her head down to her own work.

“Okay.” I finally said.  “I’ll see you after class.”

He nodded once, but kept his pen.

Irrational anger followed me throughout the rest of class, and by the time that it ended, I was beside myself.

“Do you want me to wait?”  Hadley asked.

I shook my head.

“No.” I snapped.  “I have to go to work after this anyway.  I just hope he doesn’t make me late.”

Hadley packed her book into her bag, gave me a worried look, and then left without another word.

I stayed in my seat once my bag was packed, waiting to see what Dr. McAsshole had to say.

Once the last person escaped, he stopped erasing the board, (and yes, I was admiring his ass if you were wondering) he turned and crossed his thick, muscular arms over his chest.

“The other teachers give you glowing recommendations.”  He started saying.

I licked my lips.

“Uh, thank you?”

I didn’t know what to say, nor where he was going with this.

“I wanted you to understand that I won’t tolerate this kind of behavior when I have you in my ER.”

I blinked.

Then blinked again.

“Uhhhh,” I started to say, but he interrupted me.

“You’ll be starting on your nurse internship next week.  You’ll be there two days out of the week, twelve hour shifts, and always under me or Dr. Wild.”

I blinked some more.

“I…I got it?”  I finally was able to get out.

He nodded his head.

“Though I expect that has more to do with who your mother is than whether you are actually qualified or skilled enough to be there.”

My mouth dropped open in affront.

“Oh, I assure you that I am skilled and qualified enough to be there.” My back straightened. “Is that all?”

I could’ve sworn I saw his lips twitch at my show of anger, but no other signs were apparent.

“Yes, that’ll be all.”

I nodded and stood, throwing my bag on my shoulder and practically stomping toward the door.

He stopped me, though, the moment I was about to exit fully.

“Thank you.”

I froze, and turned.

“For what?”  I asked stiffly.

“For not running over me this morning.  Thank you for paying attention.”

I didn’t bother to answer him.

Otherwise I might’ve said that I now wished that I hadn’t been paying attention.

Mother fucker.

Who did he think he was?

My mother wouldn’t stoop so low as to get her daughter a job…would she?
