Wound Tight is a story of self-discovery, and it’s the perfect title for two men whose feelings and nerves are coiled so taut that the process of realizing who they truly are, what they want, and what they deserve is lengthy and burdensome.

Renner Bastion is a stoic businessman whose life centers around the bottom line – money and numbers are his first and second loves, never finding time for anything or anyone else until Milo Bautista steamrolls into Renner’s life and asks for his guidance and mentorship when Milo finally realizes his sexual preferences and is now ready to explore that side of himself that he’s suppressed for far too long.

At face value, Renner and Milo are complete opposites. Renner’s a pessimist to Milo’s optimism and Milo actually lives life while it seems that Renner is just trying to stay alive. But despite their differences and Renner’s role as Milo’s boss and now mentor, Milo teaches Renner just as much about himself and his view of the world and Milo offers Renner a chance to do more than simply grow his company…he allows Renner to grow his life in terms of love and acceptance.

Renner and Milo’s story is about taking chances and putting oneself out there in order to experience the life one is meant to live and that lesson is an important one for both of them to learn, and by teaching each other that idea, Renner and Milo give into their feelings for one another despite the risks because the payoff is so much greater than the loss when it comes to finding the one person you can be yourself with and learn what matters most in life.

Overall, I enjoyed Wound Tight and I loved witnessing Renner and Milo’s slow burn relationship advance to scorching. But I have to admit that the ending felt a bit rushed…after everything that the couple went through and the back and forth readers endured, I didn’t feel completely satisfied with the ending. Also, at times, I didn’t really feel like Renner and Milo’s connection/attraction was solid. It might have been due to the third person perspective, but it took me a bit to see how these two fit together when their personalities are so strikingly different. But it’s still a good M/M read that readers of the genre will enjoy.

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Members of the Sectors as well as the Beyond series readers knew from the beginning that war with Eden was inevitable; there was no way that the Councilmen of Eden were going to allow the Sectors to continue their dubious ways without forcing them to heel. But where Eden messed up was in thinking that they could force fighting within the Sectors themselves, consequently wiping themselves out without Eden or its councilmen having to lift a finger. And this poor planning without a series of back-up plans is what Dallas O’Kane and the fighters of the rebellion are banking on in order to bring Eden’s wall down and for the elite of Eden to truly understand what the Sectors are all about, which is a lot more than simply fighting and fucking.

Like all of the stories in the series, Beyond Surrender has multiple plot lines unraveling with multiple voices giving readers insight into what’s happening at varying angles as readers continue their way through the book, and it only seems fitting that the couple central to the final book in the series would be the heart of the O’Kanes and the queen of the distillery, Nessa, and the man who has been training his entire life for the very mission that lies before them, Ryder.

In a war of this magnitude, casualties are inevitable, and because the leaders of Eden are willing to sacrifice just about every member of their society, innocents will die for a cause they wanted no part in, simply because they’re expendable, which forces members of the rebellion to treat all those against them as enemies, making the fight that much more deplorable.

This is a large-scale battle fought on a number of fronts, so while Nessa isn’t out on the front lines, she is pivotal to the rebellion, offering her liquor for medicinal as well as battle purposes and preparing to keep the distillery going long after the war when it’s time to rebuild and get back to living for the moment in all of its debauched ways. 

Ryder is a powerful weapon for the war, so his complete focus is required in order to save lives and protect the people of the sectors; this fight is the culmination of his life’s mission, and each part of his life has been carefully planned out in order to achieve success. But nothing could have prepared him for how he would feel about Nessa after spending stolen moments together and while he still offers safety, shelter, and protection against Eden, that singular focus becomes about more than just winning a war…it becomes about claiming Nessa, even if only for a short amount of time and finding a way to mesh what he’s been taught about war to what the O’Kanes can teach him about the need for debauchery, especially in times of trial.

Dallas and Lex will always remain the King and Queen of the Sectors because their reign is not one that can be challenged despite people’s efforts to do so, and in Sector Four’s den of sin, the rebellion will rise and even if it’s burned to the ground, it will rise again because no one can keep a man like Dallas and a woman like Lex down for long, especially when they have the backing of a group of people who truly understand what the O’Kane empire means and will rally around Dallas because they trust him and his ability to take care of them and theirs.

What goes beyond surrender and what does it mean for a collection of sectors who are barely hanging on due to negligent treatment and greedy, devious enemies? Sawyer Bennett continues to create dynamic alpha heroes in her Cold Fury Hockey series in her newest release, Max, but this time around, she gives readers a male athlete who’s all about finding love, acknowledging feelings, and being the best man he can be, both on and off the ice.

Max Fournier is strikingly different from the previous five Cold Fury stars; he doesn’t need a woman to be “better” for…he doesn’t need to find his other half in order to not sleep with puck bunnies. He’s a sweet, generous, and reliable man who knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to get it. What you see is what you get with Max, which is a refreshing break from the manwhores turned one woman men that readers find in a lot of sports romances, and it’s that fact that made me instantly adore Max and want him to get his happily ever after.

Regardless of how attractive Max is and how much her body wants him, Julianne Bradley has too much responsibility hanging over her head to get involved with anyone, especially one as famous and charismatic as Max. Her life revolves around her two nephews and her niece who were left in Jules’ care after their mother died. Everything she does each day focuses on the needs of those three kids, which means that finding time for herself is extremely difficult. Jules can’t allow anyone into her messy life, particularly a man whose career puts him in the spotlight and whose fans have a whole litany of things to say about anyone woman that seems to be important to him.

But despite the fact that Max’s world scares the hell out of Jules, Max finds ways to embed himself in her life and the three kids who are a package deal and he does so with the intent to prove that he wants Jules and everything that comes along with her because Max knows she’s worth it and each time he gets Jules out of her shell and out from under everything that’s weighing her down, the real Jules comes out, solidifying just how much he wants to be with her and her kids.

I absolutely loved how Sawyer Bennett wrote Max’s character and how he remained steadfast to who he was throughout the entire story and the fact that this laidback, caring, and dedicated man is also a freak in the sheets doesn’t hurt either;) Some readers might have a bit of an issue with Jules and her insecurities and second guessing, but I thought her reactions fit how out of control she felt with her situation and how she honestly couldn’t understand how a man like Max could want a disaster like her and the baggage that came with her.

Max is a steamy and sweet story that teaches a great lesson about taking people as they are and seeing them for who they are despite the craziness that surrounds their life. It’s a great addition to the Cold Fury Hockey series and it has me eager to dive into Roman’s story next!
