Review

For the past two years, Pim has been kidnapped, brutalized, and tortured, and in the process of being victimized, she somehow found a way to cling to hope and assert herself by allowing no one to hear her voice, fighting her battles with silence and keeping that one part of herself as her own despite the repercussions of that act.

Now she finds herself free from her Master’s abuse, but the question of the price of that freedom remains unanswered for both Pim and readers because Elder’s obsession with the silent one is still a puzzle to solve. Elder stole her with no intention of freeing her even if the cost of her captivity is too much for him to bear due to his predilections.

The second installment of Elder and Pim’s story continues to be a battle of wills and a game that doesn’t have rules or a set format, making every move suspect and powerful because there’s no way to truly know how the game will end or if there will be a winner when everything is said and done.

Pepper Winters continues her masterful characterization of Elder and Pim by only allowing a certain amount of enlightenment of who they were/are. Elder remains a mystery, for the most part, because there are so many facets to his personality, and he only bestows certain qualities upon the people who work for him as well as Pim herself.

As the days go by and Pim’s body heals and she begins to understand that being Elder’s captive is much different than how she was treated with her master, she feels torn in two because who she used to be – Tasmin – is just below the surface of her psyche, and even though she’s afraid to show who she really is and even use her voice to prove to herself that she can still have power without her self-imposed silence, the push and pull between her and Elder and Elder’s dismissive nature at times, leaves her in a state of uncertainty.

Elder’s reasons for stealing Pim still remain unclear and as readers witness Elder become unhinged and his control is mastered by a girl who has been battered and bruised, what his need for her mind as well as her desire for him only furthers the quandary of who Elder used to be and what his past means for his future with Pim.

I’m continually amazed by Pepper Winters storytelling…by the ease with which she delves into the darkest parts of human nature and exposes them in a way that illustrates the minuscule cracks that prove that goodness can still be seen in the most evil of places. As Winters continues to tell Elder and Pim’s story, I hope to truly understand who Elder is and what’s at stake for him in terms of his self-control when it comes to Pim remaining by his side. I’m intrigued by how the meaning of the series’ titles personify Elder and Pim’s worth and the price it will ultimately take for Elder to free Pim, if an amount will even allow him to give her up, which, at this point, I’m not sure matters to him at all.

DOUBLE COVER REVEAL AND EXCERPTS: Put Out and Beard Mode by Lani Lynn Vale

DOUBLE COVER REVEAL
by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Put Out

Series: Kilgore Fire Series #5

Author: Lani Lynn Vale

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release: January 26, 2017

Model: Matthew Hosea http://bit.ly/2fMEkqu

Angie is a survivor.  Anything you could throw at her, she could overcome.

After her father left her like a pile of unwanted trash, she began fighting.  Fighting to build a life. Fighting to keep her child. Fighting to matter.

She thought she had it all figured out.

Then Bowen Race Tannenbaum walks into her life, turning it into a flurry of confusion, hope, and then ultimately despair.  He tore down, brick-by-brick, her carefully constructed world, leaving her heart in tatters and longing for more. Such as a happily ever after, something that wasn’t ever going to happen for her. Not when she couldn’t give him what he wanted.  He’d break her, and she couldn’t be put back together a second time.

Bowe wasn’t always so jaded, but when you keep drawing a losing hand, it tends to affect a man. He didn’t mean to lash out so carelessly. But he was so over being told no. He was done being lied to. He was through with being cheated on.

This time, his heart was getting what it wanted. If Angie wasn’t able to see what he was offering, what was right here in front of her, well then, he’d just have to damn well show her.

“What’s wrong with you?”  Booth asked, following me.
I turned my head only far enough so he could see my glare.
Obviously, though, the glare didn’t’ have the intended affect when he continued to walk into the room, parking his ass in the bunk straight across from mine.
Sure, the bunk was his, and I wasn’t the only one who shared this room, but I wasn’t up for any chatter. Especially after the night I’d had.
“You gonna make me guess?” He continued as if I wasn’t ignoring him.
“You’re a persistent bastard,” I grumbled, turning my head to face the wall.
“Come on, you know you want to talk to your best friend, Booth.”  He teased.
I tossed the man a look.
“You’re not my best friend.”  I told him.
He pouted, and I sighed, rolling until I was on my back, very carefully since it seemed the bed was about the same width as my back.
“I’ve completely and utterly failed in getting the woman I want to go out with me to even hold a conversation with me for longer than a minute.” I told him.  “I saw her last night—with another man—and I don’t know what to do to get her to see me.”
Booth’s mouth fell open.
“You’re shitting me.”
I shook my head, feeling heat hit my face as I did.
“No.”
“But…you’re the dream boat.  You’re the man that Masen tells me all the time is the hottest guy at the firehouse. You literally could have anyone that you wanted.  What’s the deal?”  He kicked his feet up so they were resting on the side of mine.
“Nothing to tell.  I’m just…awkward.”
“Awkward, how?”  He persisted.  “Awkward as in you can’t talk to a woman awkward, or awkward in which you accidentally whip your dick out of your pants to break the ice instead of using your big boy words?”
I tossed him a look.  “She was shot…or something. I have the girl in the back of the ambulance with her shirt off and all I can do is stare at the scars on her abdomen. My staring kept me from asking her anything when I had the chance. Now that I’ve decided that she’s worth losing my favorite mechanic’s trust, I’ve done everything I could to speak with her, and she still ignores me.”
“Where does she work?”  He asked.
“The hospital and for her brother.  You know her.”  I cleared my throat. “It’s Angie.”
Booth stared at me for all of two seconds before he fell backwards to the cot.
“You’re doomed.”
I laughed, zero humor in my voice.
“Yeah, I know.”
The tones dropped indicating a call was coming through for us.
We both paused in our conversations, and I cursed when I heard what it was.
“Mother fucker.” I sighed.  “This has to be a fucking joke.”
Booth’s face showed the way he felt about the call that had come in just like I was sure mine was as well.
“This is some fucking cosmic joke, isn’t it?”  I asked.
“Sorry buddy.”
Hurrying to my feet, I jogged lightly to the bay where my turnout gear was located.
Despite this being a medical call, we were still required to put our gear on.
Which was why I was sweating my balls off when we finally arrived at Soco Garage, the very same garage that none other than Angie Soco also worked.

Aaron don’t ever call me Fatbaby’ Sims is lucky to be alive. Or at least that is what everyone keeps telling him. He doesn’t feel lucky, though.

He’s scarred, has more than a little bit of a bad attitude, and there isn’t a single day that goes by that he doesn’t wish his wife would’ve just finished off the job.

After being denied his old position at the fire department, he leaves, and doesn’t look back. He heads straight to Alabama and into the semi-welcoming arms of The Dixie Wardens MC. There he becomes a part of a brotherhood that forces him to get back in the land of the living.

Imogen is a smart girl. A girl who doesn’t always make the best decisions.

Her heart is in the right place when she walks into that prison, but it doesn’t take long for her to realize that her heart shouldn’t have had any say so in the matter. Especially when one wrong move lands her in the arms of a scarred man that looks frightening enough to scare any sane woman away.

Immediately enthralled by the angry man, she tries to get closer to him. But the harder she tries to get to know him, the further he pushes her away.

The only thing Aaron wanted to do after his now ex-wife was sent to jail was escape. Escape the awful memories. The pity-filled eyes. The curious glances.

He does a damn fine job at ensuring he draws as little as attention as possible, but then that annoying woman with her startling blue eyes starts hammering away at his resolve. Makes him feel when he doesn’t want to feel.

Imogen comes into his life and carves out a place for herself, obliterating his defenses one heated kiss at a time.

It doesn’t take long, and he realizes he’s in deep. Too deep to ever want to come out.

Imogen will know what it’s like to be loved by a reject.

“New guy.”  Someone muttered behind me.
I turned only my head to find Stone, the president, staring at me with hard eyes.
“Yeah?” I asked him, dropping my bag on the floor and heading in his direction instead of out the door like I’d originally intended.
“You’re here because you have a special set of skills that we need.”  The leader of the band of misfits, Stone, drawled.
I nearly laughed.
“That sounds like a bad line out of a movie.” I muttered, wondering where he was going with this.
He tossed me a glare and then yelled.
“Truth!”  Stone yelled.  “Ghost! Get the fuck in here!”
Ghost and Truth walked in the door at the same time, both of them turning to the side to walk inside, and stared at Stone
“Ghost, hold Truth down so New Guy can give him the fuckin’ shot.” Stone grumbled.
Ghost tackled Truth and wrestled him to the desk, then sat on him while Stone leaned back and watched.
“No, motherfucker!” Truth yelled.  “I don’t want it!”
“It’s the fuckin’ flu shot, you dumb shit.  Not a fuckin’ tracking device. Take a fuckin’ chill pill.”  Stone grumbled, staring at the scuffle that was going down in front of him.
I picked up the syringe from the table, similar to the one I’d given everybody else’s flu shot with, and stabbed it in the meat of Truth’s arm.
Truth bellowed in rage, and I flipped the guard up on the syringe before tossing it into the trash can.
“Done?” I asked Stone.  “I have to get to work.”
Stone nodded.
“Yeah, thanks.” He nodded. “Have fun at the nut house.”
I grunted something unintelligible, causing him to laugh.
“Don’t sound so excited.” He laughed.
I flipped him off and walked out the door just as Ghost was letting Truth up
“Why you gotta be such a big motherfucker?”  Truth growled.  “If you’d been anyone else, I’d have gotten away.”
“Why do you think I called Ghost instead of anyone else?”  I heard Stone reply.

Blurb

Billionaire Caleb Blackstone lives in the glamorous world of wealth and success, with every material luxury. But the moment he sees Brooke Casterley, none of that matters. Caleb is filled with a raw, undeniable need that he can’t ignore…for a girl who is so completely different from everything and everyone he’s ever known.

Only Brooke isn’t looking for love. She knows all too well just how much damage the wrong guy can do. Still, what sane, broke British girl can resist the charms of an incredibly sexy, chivalrous billionaire? What starts as flirtation quickly turns into all-consuming passion. Nothing could have prepared her for the searing heat of Caleb’s touch—or just how much she craves him.

Their whirlwind romance is the stuff of high-society fantasy—but for every moment of pleasure, there is a cost. Past mistakes and tragedy shadow them both…and falling for him might be the kind of trouble she can’t afford.

Review

“When you find whatever it is that makes you happy, hold on to it with everything that you’ve got.”

A simple statement but one that speaks to the heart of what life should be about…what love should be defined as…what the foundation of a relationship should be grounded in.

It shouldn’t matter one’s station in life…east side or west side…filthy rich or dirt poor…master or servant. Happiness shouldn’t be materialistic; it shouldn’t be based on what blood runs through one’s veins or what money can buy because love doesn’t work that way…happiness doesn’t work that way; in fact, it’s been proven over and over again in romance stories and in fairy tales that a woman like Cinderella will has a far better chance at a happily-ever-after than the wicked men and women who attempt to thwart the good from winning.

Caleb Blackstone is another one of Raine Miller’s alpha males who knows exactly what he wants once he finds it and refuses to take no for an answer. Caleb’s obsession with Brooke Casterley might have occurred a bit too quickly for some readers’ taste, but what made their relationship work for me was Miller’s characterization of them as well as their backstories. Miller worked meticulously to prove to readers that despite the polar opposite worlds that Caleb and Brooke come from, there’s no better person for one another because Brooke grounds Caleb and Caleb helps Brooke cope with the pain and heartbreak of her past. They provide each other with the love, support, and respect that all people deserve and they make one another’s life complete and whole.

What stood out the most in Filthy Rich was Caleb’s steadfast commitment to Brooke from the very beginning and the little ways he showed her his feelings and made her feel cared for and safe. Brooke’s past needed healing and her honesty with what happened to her and her endeavor to heal and move forward allowed her relationship with Caleb to blossom as much as she did due to his comforting and heartfelt ways.

I’m intrigued with the hero and heroine in the next Blackstone Dynasty book. With what little readers learn about the future characters, we’re in for quite a journey because it seems to me that at least one of them will fight their attraction to the other and it will be interesting to see how the other character contends with the wall that’s built to keep them out.

Excerpt

I would give this thing two drinks max before I was outie.

Nodding and saying the right things, I shook hands with the colleagues who’d known my father and accepted condolences from others. I made a mental note of the people who’d made the effort to mention his name to me, and I would write them down with the event and date as soon as I got home.

I’d worked my way through the room, as I had been taught by my dad—by the best to ever work a roomful of potential deals—when I decided I’d accomplished what I’d set out to do tonight. It was time for me to go. After setting my glass down on an empty table, I started for the door . . . until I saw her.

Just like that. She appeared in my line of sight and I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

The beautiful girl from this morning at the Starbucks on Hereford Street.

I knew it was her because how could anyone forget those sexy boots? Her blonde hair wasn’t down like it had been this morning, though. She’d pulled it back into a sleek ponytail . . . but she was serving at this event? I’d seen her go into that design studio next to Starbucks. She probably had two jobs. Industrious . . . beautiful . . . sexy.

I quickly returned for my half-empty glass and snatched it up from the table. I suddenly felt like an appetizer or two.

She saw me approaching and moved closer with her tray. “What are these called?” I asked without sparing her tray a second glance. Bad move on my part, but I was too busy taking in her golden eyes and hair, and everything else I could now see up close. Perfect skin, dark lashes that framed spectacular eyes, and a scar along the hairline of the right side of her face. Something had hurt her at some point in the past, and I found it utterly insane that I was disturbed by it.

She rolled her pink lips together as if she was trying to suppress laughter. “Well, they’ve told me it’s something called a . . . meatball. Very unusual gourmet creation. You should try one. They’re said to be quite delicious.”

That voice of hers was . . . fucking beautiful.

“Okay.” I picked up a meatball and popped it in my mouth. Didn’t taste a thing. I could have been chewing slaughterhouse by-products and I wouldn’t have known. My brain had shut off everything except her beautiful voice.

“You are either messing with me or that blow to your head must have been devastating. I would wager you’ve had a meatball before.”

“I am.”

She lost her smile. “You are messing with me?”

“No, I am devastating—I mean devastated—by the blow to my head.” What in the mother fuck was I even saying to this girl? I sounded like Rain Man minus the IQ. I needed to stop talking.

“I’m sorry to hear that. It looks painful.”

“It doesn’t hurt me now.” I think I smiled and shook my head but couldn’t be sure. Just call me the village idiot because I knew I was acting like one. I did love the sound of her voice, though.

“Another rare and precious meatball?” She offered her tray and studied me this time. She had to be disgusted by my appearance and turned off by my behavior, but she didn’t show it if she was.

“Yes, please.” I took another meatball but I didn’t eat it. “You are British.”

“You are American,” she said with a fast wink, before turning away to serve other guests.

I watched her walk away from me and felt the pounding of my heart vibrating throughout my entire body.

Something had just happened to me.

I wasn’t completely sure what exactly, but I was crystal clear on the reason.

Her.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Words I Couldn’t Say by Tessa Teevan

Title: Words I Couldn’t Say
Series: Promise in Prose #1
Author: Tessa Teevan
Release Date: Nov 22, 2016
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
You know the old adage “if you love something, set it free?”
It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
The dumbest thing I’ve ever done.
I loved her. I lost her. Hell, I let her go. And then spent five miserable years without her.
To cope with the loss, I put pen to paper and wrote her a love story, knowing when she was ready she’d hear the words I couldn’t say all those years ago.
Turned out, not only would she hear them, but when Hollywood came calling, I made sure she got the lead role. After all, no one else could portray the character whom she’d inspired.
Now she’s within arms’ reach and finally, she’ll know the truth in my heart.
Because that other cliché, “Actions speak louder than words?”
I’m going to prove it.
My words may have brought Ava Banks back into my life; I have to be enough to make her stay.
The air around us was silent save for the crickets chirping off in the distance. The cool Cincinnati breeze nipped at my skin while I waited for his reaction. When I’d started writing this novel, it had been an ode to my past love. My past life. But then it’d taken on a life of its own and become so much more. Which had made it that much more poignant. That much harder to fathom the one word that’d been haunting me for years.
Goodbye.
At long last, he turned to the final page and sucked in a breath. My stomach twisted in knots because he was about to read the end. And I didn’t know how he’d interpret it. Half scared he’d tell me that I’d lost my mind and no one would ever want to read this story, especially with that ending.
He didn’t make me wait long. As his head slowly rose, I was taken aback at the tears shining in his usually cheerful eyes. This man, who had always been like a second father to me, had been reduced to tears by my words. My words. Words we both knew for whom they were meant. And, instead of calling me a fool or attempting to kill me, he watched me with tearful appreciation, switching between nodding and shaking his head as if trying to process it all.
I didn’t know how to react, so I simply stared at him, waiting for him to say something. Anything.
He closed the manuscript and set it on the table in front of us before taking a long swig from his whiskey glass. I followed suit and enjoyed the smoky burn that did little to soothe my nerves.
“Jesus Christ,” he muttered, his eyes locking in on mine. “Tucker. You did it. You fucking did it,” he whispered, seemingly unashamed of his emotional display.
I nodded, the same emotion welling up inside me when I remembered the ending of my first novel. So many love stories begin with the girl who got away. Mine wasn’t any different. Not only in my novel, but in real life as well. Ava Banks was, and always would be, that girl for me. But, instead of slipping through my fingers, she’d made the conscious decision to leave. And, like most dumbass men, I’d let her. Hell, I’d pushed her away. I’d regretted it ever since.
But, now, I was hoping like hell I could get the second chance Trevor did. Hoping like hell my story would turn out differently than his. But, either way, I was putting myself out there, as terrifying as that was. She finally, finally would hear the words I couldn’t say all those years ago.
Now, I just had to wait to see what she’d do about it.

Review

Everyone has a story to tell…an exploration of the highs and lows of life and the lessons learned throughout the years. Sometimes the tale is romantic and loving while, other times, it’s painful and depressing, forcing choices to be made that unequivocally define who that person is and the path that person takes to find his/her happily ever after, if it’s even possible.

When art imitates life, a couple’s real story becomes fictitious, in a sense, because names have changed and the real-life ending hasn’t been written yet even though the book’s conclusion takes on a life of its own. But regardless of the fictional storyline, a couple’s own story is still in production, so that means there’s still a chance to change their story…to take advantage of a second chance for their first love and ride off into the sunset together, instead of walking away from each other without fighting for a love that’s been there from the very beginning.

Ava Banks and Tucker Manning were meant to fall in love…fate brought them together for a reason, but it also drove them apart in order for dreams to be fulfilled and unexpected circumstances to be controlled in a constructive way. Despite the heartbreak of being pulled apart and the lonely existence both have felt for the past 5 years, they’ve grown as individuals and are now ready to reclaim the person who’s always been theirs and change the ending that occurred all those years ago to one that fit how much they love one another and their willingness to fight instead of walk away.

I love the concept of a story within a story, and Tessa Teevan does an amazing job of tying the two together and using one as a stepping stone for the other. Writing Those Three Words was a cathartic experience for Tucker, and it’s one that solidified what’s been missing from his life for the last 5 years. Trevor and Abby’s story sets in motion his reunion with Ava and allows old hurts to be kept in the past and the focus to be on the present and creating a future where Tucker and Ava fight for their relationship instead of hurt one another all over again.

Words I Couldn’t Say is an emotional journey for both Tucker and Ava as well as readers. In flashbacks, we learn how they broke each other’s hearts 5 years ago and the extenuating circumstances that tore them apart and then we witness the ways they repair one another’s hearts and prove by their actions that the love they’ve always felt for one another hasn’t dissipated despite the time and distance; in fact, it’s been their guiding force to bring Ava back home to Cincinnati and back into the arms of a man she’s always belonged to since she was born.

Words have power…the power to destroy…the power to heal…the power to bring lovers back together, but words alone can’t overcome a heartbreaking past…that requires a combination of words and deeds as well as a little help from fate!

How will he convince her that he’s a changed man who wants nothing more than to make her his forever?

Hard As Steel by Laura Kaye
After identifying her employer’s dangerous enemies, Jessica Jakes takes refuge at the compound of the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club. Fellow Hard Ink tattooist and Raven leader Ike Young promises to keep Jess safe for as long as it takes, which would be perfect if his close, personal, round-the-clock protection didn’t make it so hard to hide just how much she wants him–and always has.

Stroke of Midnight by Lara Adrian
Born to a noble Breed lineage steeped in exotic ritual and familial duty, vampire warrior Jehan walked away from the luxurious trappings of his upbringing in Morocco to join the Order’s command center in Rome. But when a generations-old obligation calls Jehan home, the reluctant desert prince finds himself thrust into an unwanted handfasting with Seraphina, an unwilling beauty who’s as determined as he is to resist the antiquated pact between their families.

All Hallows Eve by Heather Graham
Salem was a place near and dear to Jenna Duffy and Samuel Hall — it was where they’d met on a strange and sinister case. They never dreamed that they’d be called back. That history could repeat itself in a most macabre and terrifying fashion. But, then again, it was Salem at Halloween. Seasoned Krewe members, they still find themselves facing the unspeakable horrors in a desperate race to save each other-and perhaps even their very souls.

Review

The 1001 Dark Nights: Bundle Seven offers a diverse set of novellas sure to please all romance and mystery readers, and even if readers aren’t a lover of paranormal, the two paranormal novellas included in the bundle just might change their mind. There’s steam, suspense, drama, and passion in this group of stories that will surely get readers hooked and because it’s such an eclectic set, hopefully, it will spurn readers to new genres and new authors, which seems to be what these bundles are all about!

Pure Wicked by Shayla Black

Jesse McCall and Bristol Reese, international superstar and small town girl, two people who are looking for a change, a way to move forward and find something meaningful – a way out of the mess that is their lives due to bad decisions and other people’s idiocy. They may come from two different worlds, but they’re the balm to allow each other’s current situations to change, and as long as they can both hold on and endure the ride – every wickedly sexy and confusing part of it – they may just have found the meaningful life they’ve needed.

Pure Wicked is a quick read that illustrates how life can change for the better unexpectantly. Bristol and Jesse’s relationship moves quickly from one steamy night into a whole lot more, and while I did feel like I had whiplash with how fast everything progressed and then felt a bit teased and unfulfilled at the end, the story perfectly fits the concept and reasons behind the storytelling of the 1001 Dark Nights series, leaving readers and listeners wanting more at the end.

Hard As Steel by Laura Kaye

I CANNOT get enough of Laura Kaye’s Hard Ink Men! All of them are alpha males to their core, but there is also a softer side of them…maybe even a tormented side due to circumstances beyond their control, and Ike Young, Kaye’s newest Hard Ink man seems to be weighed down with a past that won’t release him from moving on and enjoying more than living half a life. But if there’s one thing that Kaye has proven to her readers, it’s that her heroines are more than willing to battle their men’s demons and prove to them that they are more than worth the love and devotion these women want to bestow upon them.

Ike is no stranger to guilt and a past that he prefers to remain hidden, but he portrays himself as the badass motorcycle brother and tattooist and nothing more because he refuses to allow another woman into his life, especially one with as many problems as Jessica seems to have after a one night stand turns into someone who wants her dead. But Ike and Jess’s attraction to one another continues to sizzle as Ike secures and protects her from harm, and when two people with so much sexual chemistry are confined to a secluded cabin for an unforeseen amount of time, the steel wall Ike has around his heart/body is no match for his feelings for Jessica. But even though Ike wants her, she’s going to have to fight tooth and nail to get him to realize that he can have her…that he deserves her, which seems to be a much harder battle than the one the Hard Ink Men are fighting against their hidden enemy.

I’m sad to see my Hard Ink Men series ending, but the way Laura Kaye crosses over to her new Raven Riders series with Ike and Jess’ book proves that there are more alpha males and kick ass heroines in my future and perhaps even some visits of old friends.

Stroke of Midnight by Lara Adrian

I haven’t had much exposure to Lara Adrian’s paranormal worlds, but my introduction to her Midnight Breed series has me moving her books up on my TBR pile. The entire concept of the Breed Warriors and their Breedmates is an intriguing one and even though I’m late to the game in understanding how the ancient rules and procedures work, it was clear that familial obligation as well secure blood bonds are of the upmost importance in Adrian’s world.

Jehan and Seaphina may not know one another and may have greatly misjudged each other throughout their initial meeting, but it becomes clear, early on in their handfast, that there’s an attraction between them they can only fight for so long before giving into temptation and perhaps securing a blood bond becomes the only thing that matters to them. Their connection moves beyond a duty to their family and becomes one based off of reciprocated feelings that they tried like hell to deny but can no longer.

The Breed world is a highly sensual and action-packed one, and it will pull readers in due to its multi-faceted characters and a plot line that continues to alter based on the challenges that are faced and the complicated relationships of the hero and heroine. I adore series that are long standing because it illustrates the writing prowess of the author and her ability to maintain a world over the duration of the series, keeping it fresh and appealing to its readers, and I wholeheartedly believe that Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed is one such series.

4 Poison Apples

————————————————————————————————-

All Hallows Eve by Heather Graham

At first, the murder mystery story seemed out of place for this collection of novellas because while there’s an undertone of a love story due to Jenna Duffy and Samuel Hall’s long-standing relationship, All Hallows Eve is not a love story; it’s a paranormal whodunit and readers become super sleuths right along with the main characters as they work to solve the case before more people are murdered. But the more I thought about its place in the 1001 Nights Bundle, the more I understood the novella for what it was – a step outside the ordinary and an intriguing story set apart from the others to provide readers with a short introduction into a widely enjoyed series, the Krewe Hunters series and to allow readers the opportunity to participate into the paranormal investigation.

Rendezvous by Skye Jordan

All it took was one kiss to prove to Keaton and Brooke that there was something special between them…something worth exploring. But when Brooke’s family needed her, she left Keaton and any chance they had of starting a relationship, which sent Keaton back to his one night stands and “them crazy bitches” who only wanted a piece of what Keaton could give them both in and outside the bedroom.

One year later and Keaton’s finally done wanting anything to do with the trouble making bimbos he used to bring to his bed, and as luck would have it, he just happens to reconnect with the “one that got away;” now, all he needs is to figure out how to change their current situations so that they can explore the chemistry that sizzles between them and finally take a chance on something permanent instead of the temporary rendezvous he’s only ever been willing to have.

Keaton and Brooke’s story is a quick and dirty read that illustrates just how filthy a good girl can be when she finds the right sexual partner. Even though Brooke doesn’t know it yet, she is definitely Keaton’s girl…his perfect match, and he refuses to allow a bitchy diva or any other obstacles to prevent another Renegade from getting his forever girl.

Skye Jordan’s Renegades series is full of sweet and steamy contemporary romance stories with sinfully hot alpha males and sassy women who show their men exactly what they’ve been missing by living a life without love and commitment.

I absolutely loved Keaton and his determination to make Brooke his. He builds on each rendezvous they have and proves to her just how much he wants to make a relationship work with her despite his “temporary” lifestyle. There are some miscommunications and there are times Keaton and Brooke definitely don’t make being together easy, but there’s a connection between them that refuses to be broken, so with a little work and a few more rendezvous, perhaps this temporary relationship can become permanent, adding another happy couple to the Renegade family.

An ARC was provided.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to chop a cord of wood.

BLOG TOUR: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Fractures in Ink by Helena Hunting

SBPR-FII-BT.jpg

Fractures in Ink by Helena Hunting
Publication Date: November 14th, 2016
Genre: Contemporary Romance

FIInk HH Cover (1).jpg

Synopsis

Sometimes the things we shouldn’t want become exactly what we need . . .

Waitressing at a seedy strip club isn’t ideal, but it pays Sarah Adamson’s tuition. Her goal is to finish her master’s program and get a job that doesn’t involve tight skirts and groping hands. She doesn’t need distractions. Especially not the one that comes in the form of a hot-as-sin tattoo artist who works across the street from her apartment.

Kicked out at sixteen, and a high school dropout, Chris Zelter is familiar with wanting things he can’t have. His fractured life has never been easy. As the product of someone else’s bad decisions, he knows exactly what happens when the wrong person controls your marionette strings. Now an accomplished tattoo artist in a renowned studio in Chicago, Chris has it together.

Mostly.

Apart from his infatuation with Sarah. She’s way out of his league, and Chris knows it.

But he’s willing to be her bad decision. At least for now.

Excerpt

I’d been seeking out Chris as much as I could lately, even though he was worried about my lack of sleep. My feelings for him had become like weeds, growing faster than I could contain them. I should’ve been protecting my heart instead of trying to hand it over so it could be crushed later.

So tonight, instead of pushing him to talk about whatever was making him hurt, I let him have what he wanted: an escape. I could be that.

I was exactly that every night I worked in the club. I was my customers’ escape from life, from the wives who ignored them, or from the girlfriends who didn’t exist. I smiled and batted my eyelashes and pretended their lewd comments were funny.

Tonight I could easily be whatever Chris needed, and if that was naked and a distraction from the things outside of his control, so be it. Or that’s what I told myself as I pushed his boxers over his hips.

My clothing took a little longer to remove since I was fully dressed. Chris wasn’t as slow as usual, or gentle. There was an urgency in him I’d never experienced before. What he wouldn’t give me in words, he gave me in actions. Desperation leaked through, making him frantic as he pulled my shirt over my head and fought with the clasp on my bra.

“Fuck,” he groaned. “I just wanna get my hands on all of you.”

I brushed him away, taking care of the bra for him. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I opened my legs and welcomed him between them. He locked shaking fingers around the waistband of my jeans and paused, his expression clouding.

“You sure you’re okay with this?”

“With you wanting me?” I popped the button.

He lifted his gaze. “I fucking need you.”

I shivered at his tone, wishing it indicated a different kind of need—a sustained one that was more than physical. But I pushed the feelings down, locked them inside my aching heart, and released my zipper. “Then you should have me.”

Review

There’s not a person alive who doesn’t have some cracks in their psyche…some fractures in their self-perception that makes them feel less than they truly are. Whether it be caused by difficult experiences or the inability to take care of those they love, those fissures define them…illustrate all of the reasons that they don’t deserve anything in life but the crap hand they’ve been dealt.

Chris Zelter and Sarah Adamson have several chinks in their armor, and they’ve used those gaps to distance themselves from everyone, never letting down their walls…never sharing their truths, simply focusing on the present because their futures weren’t something they could define.

Chris and Sarah’s relationship isn’t complicated, at least in some ways, because they’re not willing to take down their emotional walls or find a way around them in order to have something more than late night sex…the risks seem too great and their secrets could only mess their lives up even more if they confessed them, so Chris and Sarah take what they can get from each other, anticipating the time when their paths will take them in opposite directions, proving they’re not worth anyone’s time, at least when it counts.

Helena Hunting does a great job of illustrating how Chris and Sarah’s pasts define their present. Their childhoods left them broken, leading them to want much different lives than the ones they were forced to endure, but they don’t truly know how to not go down a similar path and be someone’s solution instead of the problem. Their respective issues take time to heal from and with the maelstrom that continues to surround them, their fractures may never solidify, which means their relationship will be left as collateral damage.

I enjoy Hunting’s angsty reads as much as her comedies because she creates these realistically, flawed characters who readers can’t help but love. As individuals, I felt for both Chris and Sarah and the things that they were going through, and I wanted them to be able to break free from all the negative in their lives and truly live. As a couple, I did find myself not truly understanding their connection or feeling where the bond was formed beyond the physical intimacy that they shared. Maybe I was too focused on them getting themselves together that it made their relationship less important…I’m not sure but I would have liked more insight into the work they were willing to do to truly mean everything to one another – to put themselves on the same path where their needs were taken care of and understood.

I truly enjoy the Inked Armor crew and with the introduction of Chris’ sister and the changing dynamics of Hayden and Tenley’s and Jamie and Lisa’s relationships perhaps there’s more to learn and read about these broken but mended characters.

Excerpt

“Be on your best behavior, Drew,” he says, a teasing tone in his voice.

“I always am,” I reply, and the fact is, that’s true. Clean-cut is my nickname.

“And text if you’re done early.”

“If I’m done early, I’m having a date with my mattress.”

He groans. “You are the definition of no fun.”

I grin. “That’s me. That’s why Qwench wants me now. Because I know how to get a good night’s sleep and stay out of the line of fire.”

When I hang up, I step out of the car, hand the keys to the valet, and thank him. Then I head inside, where Stuart greets me in the room reserved for the event, claps me on the back, and introduces me to several people. A photographer snaps shots the whole time, and I play the role that’s hardly a role—the outgoing, non-trouble-making, peace-loving quarterback who doesn’t throw punches or raise fists, like others before me have.

Don’t smoke, don’t do drugs, don’t have unprotected sex, and I also don’t speed. Squeaky clean indeed. Not even a traffic ticket on the record, and certainly no knocked-up teenyboppers with mini Drews baking in their bellies.

Stuart introduces me to the red-haired, freckle-faced guy who heads up this charity. “And this is Drew Erickson. He’s our new starter. We’re thrilled to have him on the team, especially since he’s already active with many wonderful charitable endeavors,” Stuart says to the ginger-haired guy.

We exchange small talk for a few minutes, then Stuart drops a hand on my shoulder and tells me there’s someone else he wants me to meet. “I’d love to introduce you to a sharp-as-a-tack woman who makes sure I don’t fumble,” he says, then winks in case I didn’t realize he was making a joke.

I smile to let him know I got it—fumbling humor and all—then my smile turns into a ruler-straight line when I turn on my heels and see my surfer angel.

Holy shit. She’s hot as sin in a red skirt, white blouse, and black heels. She holds a drink. Her blond hair is twisted on her head. Damn. The smoking-hot look is almost enough to make me forget she blew me off. My dick, the traitorous bastard,

“This is Dani Paige. She’s an attorney for the team,” he says, and I attempt to school my expression as I come face-to-face with the woman who ditched me.

And all I want to do is toss her on my shoulder, stalk to the bathroom, slam the door, and ask her why the fuck she didn’t call. Then when she tells me it was because she was too busy getting off to thoughts of me, I’d kiss the hell out of her until she melted in my arms and begged me to take her. I’d happily oblige. Hoist her up, hook her legs around my hips, and fuck her against the wall until she comes harder than she ever has before.

Instead, I shake her free hand. “Pleasure to meet you.” Then I whisper, just for her. “Jaws.”

Review

Have Yourself A Sexy Little Christmas: An Ethan and Cassie Novella

Cassie and Ethan are by far the angstiest couple I’ve ever read about, which is exactly why their story and their relationship has consumed so many readers. Both of them repaired themselves before they mended their relationship, and while they are both still a work-in-progress and insecurities and old wounds are difficult to truly diminish, they are making it work and remaining solid in their love and commitment to one another.

Ethan may still be a bit of a bad Romeo and Cassie definitely is still a slightly broken Juliet, but together, they are grounded and whole, and that’s exactly what Leisa Rayven allows readers to see in Ethan and Cassie’s Christmas Novella.

The Naughty List: A Liam and Elissa Novella

Elissa and Liam’s story gives readers an inside look at how a couple maneuvers around the complications that arise from being a hot commodity movie star and the time spent apart due to filming. Rayven does a great job of illustrating the special things Elissa and Liam do while they’re apart to keep their relationship going and also the creative ways they both find their release even though they’re not in the same room;) Like Elissa, I would definitely put myself on Liam’s naughty list and make sure each transgression requires Liam’s punishment because his dirty talking and stamina are worth the price!

Happy, Horny New Year: A Josh and Angel Novella

I absolutely adored Josh in Elissa and Liam’s story; he is a definite hot geek, so getting to know him better and finding out how things are working with Angel is the perfect addition to the other couples’ novellas. The green-eyed monster rears its head in Josh and Angel’s story, which makes sense because of Angel’s movie star status and her love scenes, but if Josh learned anything from Elissa and Liam’s situation, it should have been that their feelings and the actual truth are all that matter.

Each novella has a good mix of angst, steam, and emotions, and while Cassie and Ethan will always be my favorite because of how much they had to fight through to be together, the other two couples are just as entertaining and dramatic as readers’ Romeo and Juliet!

I also adored the camaraderie between Ethan and Elissa and the bond that formed amongst the women. I’m so glad that readers got to catch-up with all three couples and see how their lives are going now that they’ve truly give themselves to one another!

Review

Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde created one hell of a group of brothers in their Dirty Series and now to learn that there’s a fourth one to add to the sinfully handsome trio only sweetens the pot, despite the brothers’ hesitancy when it comes to what Jackson Stone might want from them.

What struck me the most as I was reading Jackson and Tara’s story is how alike Jackson is to the brothers he only recently found out he had. Due to his childhood and other people’s deception, Jackson is extremely guarded, unwilling to trust people and refusing to let people in, which absolutely describes Clay, Mason, and Levi. Jackson has always felt like an outsider in his own family and by the Kincaid brothers shutting him out, Jackson, once again, feels like he doesn’t belong and that he’s not good enough for his own flesh and blood.

Jackson Stone may be Saint Clay Kincaid’s long lost twin, but there doesn’t seem to be anything saintly about Jackson, which is exactly what readers will adore about him, and it’s what Tara Kent is drawn to from their first encounter. Tara has her own insecurities and the baggage she carries definitely weighs her down, but her flirty exchange with Jackson and how they seem to captivate one another, helps them both to understand that their pasts should not define their present and risking their hearts to one another is not something they have to worry about because they make each other feel worthy and significant.

Both Tara and Jackson seem to be made for sinning and the sinful ways they explore one another solidifies a connection that has been there between them from the beginning, and their bond also gives Jackson a chance to prove himself to his brothers and hopefully build a relationship with them that will finally give Jackson a family who wants him and won’t betray him for their own gain.

Out of all the brothers, I have to say that Jackson might just be my favorite. I’d gladly sin with him that’s for sure because his alpha male characteristics along with his dirty talking skills and sexual prowess as well as his intelligence and drive to succeed make him one hell of a sinfully sexy package!

Synopsis

Jack Valentini isn’t my type.

Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.

Jack might be gorgeous, but he’s also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a “rich city girl” like me, and he isn’t afraid to say so.

But I’ve got a PR job to do for his family’s farm, so he’s stuck with me for ten days, and I’m stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles.

His huge, hard muscles.

Pretty soon there’s a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I’ve never done anything so out of character—but it feels too good to stop.

And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife three years ago left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn’t think he deserves a second chance at happiness.

But he’s wrong.

I don’t need to be his first love. If only he’d let me be his last.

“Second chances are not given to make things right, but are given to prove that we could be even better after we fall.” —Unknown

Excerpt

“Wow,” she said, shutting the screen door behind her. “That was close. Thank you so much.”

“You’re welcome.” I crossed my arms, wishing I’d thought to grab a shirt. “Want to tell me what you were doing out there?”

Her cheeks colored. “Um, I was taking a run.”

“Up a tree?”

She laughed nervously. “No. Well, I didn’t start out in a tree. That happened later.”

I cocked my head, unable to resist giving her a hard time. Not so sure of yourself now, are you, Barbie?  “Oh yeah?”

“Yes. See, I left the cottage I’m renting without using the bathroom by mistake,” she began, twisting her fingers together, “and I was planning on running a loop around the farm, but it’s bigger than I thought.”

“Ah. So you were looking for a bathroom in the woods?”

“Well, yes.” She swallowed. “Sort of. But then I heard a splash and saw you…” Her cheeks were practically purple now.

I played dumb. “Saw me what?”

“Saw you naked, OK?” she blurted, throwing her hands up. “I admit it—I saw you naked.”

I had no hangups about nudity, but I was damn serious about my privacy, and about people sneaking up on me. But her embarrassment was funny. The two times I’d seen her before, she’d been so polished and poised. It felt good to put her in her place a little. “So you climbed a tree for a better view, is that it?”

Bowing her head, she dragged the toe of one shoe across the wood planks of the porch floor. “Something like that.” Then she looked up at me. Took a breath. “I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I was—I mean, I got—I couldn’t—” She sighed, briefly closing her eyes. “I have no excuse. Will you accept my apology?”

She was prettier without makeup, I decided. And the way she wore her hair off her face emphasized the wideness of her eyes, the angle of her cheekbones, the arch of her brows. Her lips didn’t need all that glossy crap, either. They were a perfect rosy pink, and I wondered if they’d feel as soft as they looked.

Fuck. I hadn’t kissed anyone in three years.

Clearing my throat, I took a step back. “Yeah. It’s fine.” Now get out of here.

She didn’t move. “So you’re not going to fire me?”

“I never hired you.”

“I know. But I really want this job. I think I can help, Jack. I know I can.”

“Suit yourself. I want nothing to do with it.” My name on her lips was trouble. Needing some distance from her, I started walking toward the dock to get my shoes and socks, but she followed me. God, she was a pest. It reminded me of the way Steph used to tag along after the boys when we were kids, wanting to get in our games.

“Are you going to be like this the entire time I’m here?” she asked.

“Like what?”

“Moody and uncooperative?”

“Probably.”

“Why? Do you hate me that much?”

“I don’t hate anybody. I just don’t see why we should pay some city girl who’s never set foot on a farm to advise us.” We reached the dock, and I leaned down to get my stuff.

“I’m not even asking to be paid, so piss off!” she shouted, her voice carrying on the water.

I straightened. “Oh, you’re working for free?”

“Yes!”

“Then you’re an idiot. Or so rich you don’t need the money.”

“I’m not an idiot,” she said through clenched teeth.

“So you’re rich, then.” I don’t know why I was being such an asshole. But for some reason, I did not want to let her see another side of me, or see another side to her. “I should have guessed.”

She crossed her arms. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means you look like you’ve led a charmed life. Like you’ve had everything you’ve ever wanted handed to you. Like you’ve never gotten your hands dirty.”

“So get them dirty.”

I almost fell off the dock. “What?”

“Get them dirty. Teach me about working this farm. I want to learn.”

Was she serious? The last thing I needed was to drag her ass around all day, explaining things. Or stare at her ass all day, imagining things. But one look at her defiant face and I shook my head. “Why do I feel like if I say no, you’ll just keep bothering me?”

She smiled and clasped her hands behind her back, rocking forward on her toes. “Because I will. I don’t like being told no.”

“Of course you don’t.” Jesus, she was trouble. A bad apple—smooth and shiny on the outside, spoiled rotten on the inside. But for no good reason, I found myself giving in. “Fine. Go change your clothes.”
