For Sabrina James and John Tucker, their ultimate goals place them in much different situations as well as locations, but that doesn’t stop them from creating another life – one that ultimately shakes up every single part of their plans and leaves them with a lasting presence from what was supposed to be only a one-night stand.

Throughout the Off-Campus series, readers have met both Sabrina and Tucker, numerous times, and they’ve witnessed their interactions with the main characters of the other books, gathering information about them and understanding parts of their personalities. Based on those incidences, on the surface, Sabrina and Tucker seem like complete opposites, but it’s exactly their differences that allow them to connect in ways that Sabrina has never allowed another guy to do, and once Tucker eases his way into the parts of Sabrina’s life that she’s willing to give him, Tucker finds himself captivated by her intelligent brain, work ethic, and beauty, which causes him to realign his goals and work towards a new one – one that includes being bound to the two people who easily come to mean the most to him in the short amount of time they’re together.

Too bad that’s exactly where she finds herself and even though she tries to get Tucker to live his own life by not dragging him down or being a burden, what she doesn’t recognize is that Tucker’s new path is just as important as his previous one and having the added bonus of two people he loves only makes it that much sweeter.

John Tucker is one hell of a southern charmer; he could make any woman swoon by calling her darlin’ and taking care of not only her body but every aspect of her life as well. Tucker’s always been the level-headed, laid back hockey player who takes care of his team and is always there to lend a hand, and he becomes even more swoon worthy when he sets his sights on Sabrina and works to get under her cold exterior and show her exactly how someone’s meant to be loved.

New Adult romances can be hit or miss due to the drama involved and naive or over the top characters, but Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series has consistently produced books as well as characters who go through a series of difficulties that truly define who they are, which is exactly what Kennedy showcases about them. I understand that college characters may go through some unrealistic circumstances and be a little stereotypical, but even with some of those attributes, the heroes and heroines in this series are complex and have aspects about them that make them unique and endearing.

John Tucker is by far my favorite Elle Kennedy hero; there’s just something about him not being flashy or cocky while still exuding confidence that excites every part of me and even though I didn’t agree with Sabrina’s treatment of him or really understand her reactions and decisions, John Tucker was the only man who could prove to her that it’s okay to lean on someone else…give your heart to someone else as long as that person has your back and Tucker definitely is that for Sabrina!

I couldn’t write my review for Playboy Pilot without using a Beatles song and relating it to the events that take Carter Clynes and Kendall Sparks from complete strangers to owners of each other’s hearts.

Carter and Kendall’s love affair is a struggle for so many reasons, and while their connection is set up as insta-love, both characters are at an impasse in their lives.

Carter’s lifestyle, thus far, has allowed him to remain unattached while getting off as much as he can with a bevy of women. His past indiscretions never seemed to faze him, but as he gets to know Kendall and starts to see his behavior from her point of view, he realizes that the label he’s received for his choices isn’t really how he wants Kendall to view him, and for some reason, her opinion of him matters.

Kendall has always followed someone else’s set path for her. She’s never decided any part of her life on her own, which has led her to hopping on a plane and escaping her home in order to get some clarity of what she should do with her life. And while that was her initial plan, meeting Captain Carter Clynes definitely shakes up her life even more, causing her to be even more confused than she already was.

There are a lot of variables that prevent Kendall and Carter from fully giving into their feelings for one another, and those issues always seem to be popping up at inopportune times, forcing them to question how anything between them can turn into something more and if they’re even capable of having a relationship with the baggage they both have.

Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland do a fantastic job of illustrating Carter’s growth throughout the text. He definitely epitomizes the womanizing playboy, and while his transformation happens quickly in the story, the reasons for his lifestyle choices are explained and they make sense with what he had to deal with in his past. I would have liked to see a bit more of Kendall’s mindset. It’s clear that her decision weighs heavily on her and how she grew up is definitely a factor in her struggle, but so many times, Kendall takes time to think through things, but I don’t feel like I get her thought process enough to understand why she chooses to do the things she does. Carter is quite the charismatic hero, so it could be that, for me, he overshadowed Kendall and didn’t allow me to get a full view of her, but I do feel like I needed more of her internal musings to fully grasp her dilemma.

Ward and Keeland are quite the dynamic duo when it comes to giving their readers swoonworthy heroes and sassy heroines. I definitely think Captain Carter Clynes is my favorite because his playfulness and charming ways resonate off of the pages of the story and make me want to fly his friendly skies;)

“Can I come in?”

Still fully erect, I tucked my cock back into my pants as best I could before opening the door.

Her eyes trailed down to my massive erection. “I’m sorry….to make you resort to that.”

“It’s okay. My hand and I haven’t spent time like this since I was a teenager. I think he missed me.”

“What were you thinking about?”

“You.”

“Yeah…but what specifically?”

“It was this fantasy of fucking you on the dance floor back at the club.”

She looked down at me again. Her expression was serious when she asked, “You need some help?”

“I thought you said we weren’t going to go there.”

“I can’t have sex with you. But I want to touch you. I could take my clothes off, let you finish what you started. You know…help you.”

Looking up at the ceiling, I shook my head. “You have no fucking clue, do you?”

“What do you mean?”

“How crazy you make me. There’s no halfway with you. Jerking off with your naked body right in front of me…not being able to do what I really want to you…would be torture. I don’t have that kind of willpower, not with you, not anymore. Even when I kiss you, all I can think about is burying myself inside of you. But you naked in front of me? Too much, Kendall. Looking filled with remorse, she waved her hands. “Okay. I get it. I’m sorry…for interrupting.”

“Go back to bed. I’ll be right there.”

After Kendall left, I closed my eyes in regret. Was I crazy for turning her away like that?

Now that she knew what I was up to in here, I couldn’t relax. Still needing release like a motherfucker, I turned on the shower and got in. Ironically, I jerked myself to thoughts of her naked body against the bathroom door and imagined she was watching me.

“I would never hurt you,” he adds softly.

“Fine, but I’m not having sex with you.”

Anna is now lying on the floor of my office, her face scrunched up in agony, her head in her hands.

“We’ll see,” he says.

A girly bubble of laughter escapes my lips, and I clamp a hand over my mouth. I want to bitch-slap myself for that outburst. But Sterling only seems amused.

I didn’t know how J.L. Berg was going to make readers fall in love with Roman Cavenaugh, especially when he readily confesses that he’s the asshole that everyone says he is, and at the beginning of Behind Closed Doors, I’ll admit that I wasn’t too fond of him. The Dickhead of the East nickname that he was given definitely was fitting and regardless of how well he ran Cavenaugh Investment, his crassness and cold demeanor didn’t set well with his employees or me.

But that’s what I love about stories because a true storyteller can take an unlikeable character and turn him into a tarnished yet charming hero, which is exactly what J.L. Berg does in Roman’s story, and while Behind Closed Doors is about Roman and Cara’s blossoming relationship as well as Cara’s transformation from a Midwestern girl to a New Yorker who is still sweet and honest, to me, this is  Roman’s journey of self-discovery…it’s his chance to learn who he truly is without his father’s disapproval and his brother’s shining star.

I absolutely adored Lailah in the Walls Duet, so I knew that if she saw the good in Roman and went out of her way to share her loving and caring ways with him that I had to give him a chance to redeem himself…to prove that he’s more than an unsocial, temperamental jerk, and even though it took some time and he had quite a few missteps along the way, I was able to see what J.L. Berg, Lailah, and Cara saw in Roman and how if he started living for himself without worrying about the Cavenaugh’s legacy or walking a line that keeps him solely focused on his job in a way that he loathes, Roman’s life and attitude would drastically change, leaving him no longer closed off behind a door that everyone’s afraid to enter.

J.L. Berg always writes stories with an abundance of heart; she definitely knows how to weave a tale with a bevy of lessons about life and love, always showing the possibility of redemption and happily ever afters even when it seems an impossibility, and that’s exactly what Berg gives readers in Behind Closed Doors.

“Can I ask you something?” she said, drawing my attention away from the monotony on my computer screen.  I looked up to find her eyes dead set on mine.  It was unnerving.

She usually tried to avoid direct eye contact with me.  Maybe I intimidated her.  Perhaps she found me attractive and the idea of lusting after her boss bothered her.

Believe me, it bothered me too.

In a very physical way.

“Go ahead,” I answered, unwilling to break the intimate connection she’d started.

“When you saw me… at the club that night,” she said, her eyes wavering just slightly.  “What was it you saw in me? I mean, was it just the clothes?”

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion.  Even though I’d said we’d never speak of what happened that drunken night two weeks ago, I saw something in her eyes that needed an answer.

That needed something more.

“Why are you asking?”

“It’s nothing, sorry. I’m being stupid,” she backpedaled, as she began fiddling with the hem of her skirt.

Looking back at our few interactions, I suddenly noticed the difference in how she’d acted today.  Her normal never-ending stream of word vomit was there, but behind it, there was an internal struggle going on.  The hemline wasn’t the first thing she’d fidgeted with.  I’d watched as she’d pulled at the collar of her shirt and then, as if she’d realized what she had done was wrong, quickly lay it flat again.

“Does this have something to do with the way you’re dressed today?”

Pink tinged her cheeks once again.

“You noticed?”

I simply nodded, not trusting myself with words in that moment.

Because I’d more than noticed.  It’d been damn hard not to think about anything but.

“A gift from my boyfriend,” she replied. “He said my old clothes didn’t fit in with our new life style.  It was a very generous gift,” she added, never forgetting that politeness she’d no doubt been taught since birth.

“But?” I questioned, waiting for her to continue.

“But… I don’t feel like me anymore,” she finally admitted.

“And I’m guessing the night in the club was another gift of his as well?”

It was her turn to nod.

I could see the indecision and worry gnawing at her.  Someone like her, sweet, honest and good… she was meant for better things than a life with a man who didn’t appreciate her.

Leaning forward, I made sure she saw the sincerity burning in my eyes as I spoke. “That night in the club, I’ll admit, I noticed the dress first.”

She opened her lips to speak but I held up my hand to stop her, wanting to make my point.

“And today, when you walked in, I couldn’t help but give a second… or third glance at the way that new skirt hugged your ass.”

Her eyes widened at my blatant honesty.

“So yes, the clothes may grab my attention for a moment or two, but the fact that I’m still interested, two weeks later?  That’s you, Cara.  That’s all you.”

And just like that, I’d crossed the line.

I’d hit on an employee.

And there was no going back from that.
