Review 

I’ve been ready for Bridger’s story since readers first met him at the beginning of Sawyer Bennett’s The Wicked Horse series; as the series has progressed, we’ve been given small glimpses into the lifestyle choices of this complex and controlled man, but there’s nothing like getting up close and personal with the man himself, and even though Bennett alluded to Bridger’s past at the end of Logan’s book, and it’s been clear from the start that Bridger has some considerable demons to contend with, I never anticipated how deep his scars would go and how disgusted and ashamed he would be with what happened to him as a teen. Conversely, it does help to understand Bridger’s intimacy issues and his need for everything that The Silo offers as well as his view on sex and what he gets from it compared to what his partner or partners does/do.

I wasn’t sure who Sawyer Bennett could match up with this “beautifully fucked-up man”; there’s so many layers to Bridger, and because he doesn’t know how to have a normal relationship or see sex as anything but pain mixed with pleasure, it needed to be someone who was willing to go up against his walls and take what he can give while still trying to show him that despite his closed-off nature, Bridger can have more from sex and a woman than what he thinks he deserves.

Maggie Waylon enters Bridger’s life when she’s unprotected and alone, and because he knows exactly how that feels, he finds himself drawn to her, which only makes things worse for him because he doesn’t know what to do with his conflicted feelings for her, and he’s unwilling to give her or anyone else power over him.

Bridger and Maggie both have a distorted sense of self, which actually helps them relate to one another, but while Maggie can move past the things that she’s done and the things that have been done to her, Bridger can’t do the same because the man he truly is hasn’t taken back full control of his life; he hasn’t broken the invisible chains that confine him and he hasn’t stopped doubting himself and his ability to reconcile his past in order to move on with a more intimate sexual relationship other than wielding a whip and purging his memories every time he comes.

Wicked Bond is a bumpy ride, but with a man like Bridger, I wouldn’t expect anything less because as toned as his body is and as hard as his head is, anything beyond what he knows and needs to remain in control is going to throw him off balance and have him questioning everything about himself. Sawyer Bennett does a fantastic job of illustrating Bridger’s struggles to come to terms with his past in order to have more than a sexual relationship with Maggie – one that is completely under his control. There were definitely times I wanted to throttle him and force him to truly see who he is beyond what he was made into by someone else’s sick and twisted preferences, but no one was going to lead him in a way that he didn’t want to go himself, so even though the path bent and curved and even digressed, everything that happened had to be done or else the bond of his past wouldn’t be broken and a new connection couldn’t be made.

“Remember to Live”

At the beginning of Retrieval, that advice cannot be heeded because the main characters’ very existence is thwarted by their pasts as well as their confined presents, leaving them breathless and damaged, merely existing for their jobs and for those who depend on them, but any more than that is impossible because Roman, Elisabeth, and Claire are far too battered and damaged to truly claim their lives and live.

But the main characters’ suffering allows them to fight when it matters most, and as the storyline twists and tangles several lives together, this is the time that they’ll need to live in the present, letting go of the past and redefining themselves as fighters not those who check out and allow significant moments to pass them by.

I wasn’t sure how one story could be told about two very different couples; I worried that it would seem choppy or fragmented, but Aly Martinez seamlessly weaves their stories together, exploring how the power of love can transcend almost anything, and just when it seems like all hope is lost and there’s no chance things will work out, the path to do so becomes clearer and it forces its travelers to trust in themselves and what they feel while also calling in reinforcements when the fight can’t be won alone.

In Retrieval, Aly Martinez truly defines what it means to be a storyteller; readers can’t help but be lured into the story because her intensely poetic words and the complexity of her characters demand readers’ attention. “Where’d you get beer?” Elisabeth asked as she scrambled from the couch.

“Seth,” I replied, hanging my head and rubbing my eyes.

Jesus, I’d wanted to kiss her. She was being a bitch, spouting shit she didn’t mean just because she was too scared to let me in.

But, even through it, those plump lips were calling to me.

I’d never been able to resist that woman. Despite that we’d fallen apart, it hadn’t changed. The hum for her was still in my veins. It never went away, but for two years, it had been dormant. I’d packed it down so tightly that I’d hoped it had died. But, with one look, my body began thrumming like a live wire.

“Seth?” she asked as she bent over to straighten her tight, black pencil skirt.

It was a rare occasion to catch Elisabeth in something other than a perfectly pressed skirt and a pair of heels. But she’d been sleeping all day. It was wrinkled all to hell and back. The only thing her efforts succeeded in was drawing my attention down to her legs.

Legs that had spent many nights wrapped around my hips as she came while crying my name.

Shit. I should go.

But, after the way she’d latched on to me that morning, I wasn’t going anywhere.

“My assistant,” I answered. “I had him pick you up a bottle of wine, too.”

She blinked. “You have an assistant? Who delivers you beer? And your ex-wife wine?”

“No, I have an assistant who does whatever the fuck I need him to do. And, luckily for us, beer and wine happen to fall into the whatever-the-fuck-I-need-him-to-do category tonight.” She fought back a smile as I finished, “So do gyros.”

“Damn. I need to get one of those,” she mumbled to herself.

I smirked. “Cash my checks and you could afford one.”

It was a dick move, bringing up the money right then. But, despite her expert hand in decorating, that little starter house we’d bought with rose-colored glasses now needed a shit-ton of work.

Her back shot ramrod straight, fury crinkling the corners of her eyes as she snarled, “I’m not cashing your checks.”

I shrugged. “Guess you’ll have to figure out how to get your own wine and dinner after tonight.”

“I think I can manage,” she fired back.

“Suit yourself.” I pushed off the couch and meandered to the kitchen.

I went to the fridge and leaned in, searching for anything I could snack on. With the exception of at least a dozen Tupperware containers, she didn’t have much in the way of a quick bite.

Snagging a handful of grapes from the drawer, I made a mental note to send Seth to the grocery store after he’d delivered dinner.

Popping the grapes in my mouth one by one, I felt her watching me in what could only be defined as silent awe. I decided my best move would be to ignore it. “You know, I should have invented Tupperware. You alone could keep me in business,” I told her, retrieving a beer and then shutting the door.

She scoffed then muttered, “At least then I would have benefitted from you abandoning our marriage.”

Lava fresh off the volcanoes in Hell boiled in my veins.

I cocked my head to the side and questioned, “I’m sorry. Come again?”

“You should go,” she snapped.

Think a-fucking-gain.

“Nah, I’m good. Got any movies?”

I tipped the bottle to my lips, doing my best to calm the storm brewing within me, all while still fighting the desire to take her to the floor, plant myself between her legs, and remind her how that fucking attitude affected me.

Clearly, she had forgotten.

My cock had not.

“Roman, it’s been a crazy day. Please don’t do this tonight.”

“Do what?” I asked, leaning back against the huge, granite island.

She threw her hands out to the sides in frustration. “What you always do.”

“What do I always do, Lissy?”

“This!” she yelled.

I frowned and took another pull from my beer. “Haven’t been in our kitchen, drinking beer, in a long time. I hardly think it’s fair to say I always do it.”

Her eyes nearly bulged from her head. “My kitchen, Roman. This is my kitchen. Not ours. And you know good and damn well that is not what I’m talking about.”

My lips twitched as I pointed the neck of my bottle at her. “No. What I know good and damn well is that I have no idea what the fuck you are talking about. Or why you’re slinging unnecessary and, might I add, undeserved attitude at me like a short-order cook at the bitch house.”

“He did not say that to me,” she whispered to herself.

When I lifted a shoulder in a half shrug, she swung a pointed finger toward the door and yelled, “Get out!”

I grinned, crossing my legs at the ankle. “You always were cranky when you were hungry.”

And that was the exact moment her head exploded.

And, when you get a group of professional hockey players together who want a permanent reminder of their days in the NHL, there’s no way their girls aren’t going to tag along and be in the presence of an excessive amount of hotness and perhaps add some metal or ink to their own bodies.

I force myself to look away because . . . well, because he’s a stranger. In my house. Naked. And oh my God, something is wrong with me, because I’m not running and calling 911 like I should.

When his chuckle subsides, he brings his head back down, so I can see the tears in his eyes from laughter. “That thing is my cock, and since this is my bathroom and you seem to be attempting to seduce me in my house, I don’t think you have any right to tell me what to do.” And with that, he leans a hip against the counter and folds his arms across his chest, eyes locked on mine and one eyebrow lifted. Everything else is left hanging out there in the wind.

“Your house? Seduce you?” At that point I realize I’m sputtering and shaking my head. “This is my house. You’re in my house.”

Confusion drifts across his face and his jaw falls lax. “Hold up.” He lifts his hands in the hold on a minute position, drawing my eyes back to where they don’t want to be. If this whole situation weren’t so unbelievable, it would be comical, and yet as true as that is, I don’t seem to be laughing at all. “I think there seems to be some misunderstanding.”

“No shit.” Sarcasm is my fallback and it doesn’t disappoint me now. A lot of good it does me, though, as I’m still doing the naked dance while trying to react to this surreal situation.

The look of disdain he gives me at my comment earns him no points in my book. “While I’m digging the socks with your outfit,” he says with a smirk, eyes veering down and then back up to my strategically placed hands, “you should cover up.” I catch the towel he tosses me and immediately wrap it around myself. I’m certain my mismatching knee-high socks make a statement about me, but I’m beyond caring, because I’m still alone in my house with a strange man and have no answers as to how this has happened.

With one hand clutching onto the towel at my collarbone, I use the other to motion to him. “You too.”

A lightning flash of a grin glances across his lips. “Sorry, but you just took the only towel left.”

In an epic battle of man versus penis and one hell of an invasion by “horny aliens,” Wyatt Hammer tries to overcome his need to “screw, pound, and drill” his trusty assistant, Natalie Rhodes, while contemplating the complexities and dangers of mixing business with pleasure. And, even though Wyatt knows that anything sexual between them is risky and somewhat forbidden due to his strict code of conduct as well as a no go due to one too many deceitful women who crossed over into his working domain, one adventurous night in Vegas threatens Wyatt’s good guy “remodel” and his boss/employee relationship with Natalie. But sometimes building a solid foundation and working with the best materials is the only way to construct a lasting bond – one that will see through until he and Natalie are well hung up on each other.

I absolutely adore the male perspective in storytelling and Lauren Blakely continues to NAIL IT time and time again. The way she presents her male character’s voice with his internal musings and friendly conversational tone with us the readers truly allows for an in-depth understanding of her big package hotties beyond their good looks, charm, and sexual innuendos.

It’s clear from the start the reasons for Wyatt’s refusal to mix business with pleasure; he’s been burned one too many times, and he doesn’t want to drink that nasty cocktail again. But what’s also clear from the beginning of the story is Wyatt’s chemistry with Natalie. There’s always been a flirtatious connection between them – one that is amplified with Wyatt’s smooth talking and Natalie’s ability to hold her own with one liners and double entrendres – a characteristic that constantly forces him to keep his impressive endowment under control whenever Natalie is in his presence.

Well Hung oozes with sexual tension, hot as hell sex scenes, an epic Vegas adventure, and a male hero who’s a dirty talking, big hearted, hardworking, sexy as sin man whose fear of being played again just might lose him the best thing to ever happen to him OR he just might trust it gut this time around and end up with an “almost ex-wife” who becomes his everything.

Let’s back up.

How did we get from not kissing to kissing? What was that turning point? Did she lean into me?

Did I move closer to her? Details matter. I’ll gladly share them.

 Start with six months of sexual tension. Add in two mojitos for her, two beers for me, and a couple vodka tonics. Stir that with some bad news on the business front, and top it with the cherry of Natalie’s hit-me-over-the-head-with-a-stick comment that left no question as to what she wanted…and here I am.

We don’t lean into each other. There’s no inch-by-slow-sensual-inch pull. It’s not a slow burn.

It’s a fiery crash. We’re two cars speeding on the highway of this night, and we slam into each other, crawl across the hoods, and kiss like crazy.

Nothing is tentative about this. We go from not kissing to kissing in less than sixty nanoseconds. Yeah, I don’t really know what a nanosecond is, either. But it happens in no time.

And now my hand is in her hair, yanking her close as we crush our lips together. We kiss hard and rough, fueled by pent-up desire and more than enough vodka and rum to make this inevitable.

Her teeth scrape me, and I growl, loving her roughness. I suck hard on her bottom lip, and I’m rewarded by nearly the same sound from her. She’s like a tiger, and together we’re animals.

I grip her head tighter, and her hands are all over me—in my hair, then down my chest, then along my arms. We kiss so deeply, it’s like we’re trying to climb each other.

At some point, she breaks off, breathes out hard, then whispers in my ear, “I’ve wanted to do that for so long.”

“Not as long as I have. Now get those lips back on mine,” I tell her, and she complies.

My hands cup her cheeks, but I’m not gentle, and she doesn’t want me that way. She’s not a gentle girl. She’s badass and tough, and she wants what I want. I hold her face tightly in my hands, and she practically crawls into my lap in a rush to get closer, then closer still as she presses her tits against my chest.

I’m seated on a stool at the bar, and we are putting on some kind of show. But I don’t care.

My tongue searches and hunts, wanting to taste every corner of her mouth, savoring the vodka and the tonic and, most of all, the Natalie. She whimpers and moans, and I swallow every sexy sound she makes.

This stool is ours. This bar is ours. The night belongs to this kiss, because it’s not a starter kiss. It contains all the clues necessary to assemble the puzzle of where this night will end.

With unwavering certainty, I know what kind of kiss this is.

Carefully refolding the letter, I place it gently on my nightstand. The stack of adoption paperwork is next. I skim the words, not completely sure of the lingo. My dad and Michelle’s names pop out a few times, along with the name Sarah Collins. She was sixteen when she had me.

I stare at the mirror hanging on the wall opposite of my bed. She was my age.

Looking down at my stomach, my hand pressing firmly into my skin, I think about how different my life would be if I had a baby right now. The stares and murmurs as I walk through school. No prom, no dating, no driving. I can’t even imagine.

I finger through the rest of the paperwork before coming across another envelope with my name on it. The handwriting is loopy and unrecognizable.

Opening up this one, I see that it’s from Sarah to me.

My little Roly Poly,

Where do I even begin? I fell in love with you the moment that test said positive.

I don’t know how old you’ll be when you read this. I bet you’re a beautiful girl. I always pictured you to have chestnut hair with green eyes, just like my mom’s. You’ll probably be a mess as you grow older, getting into trouble left and right. But you’ll have the heart of an angel, caring and loving. I hate that I’m going to miss all of this.

Mia, please know that I didn’t want this. Unfortunately, we don’t always get what we want. Mr. Dylan seems to be a saint of a man. I could tell from the moment I met him that he was going to take good care of you. If you ever want to get up with me, please, don’t hesitate. Mr. Dylan and I have agreed to stay in touch.

So, as I sit here and stare at you, lying in the nursery with all the other babies, my heart breaks. I love you so much and I will pray every day that you are happy and well.

The letter shakes in my hands. Without hesitation, I grab my phone, dialing the cell phone number left on a contact sheet in the back. I don’t want to talk myself out of it. I just want to hear her voice.

“Hello?”

My tongue is suddenly made of sandpaper. I swallow some spit, hoping to find a voice.

“Hello?” The voice sounds slightly irritated.

“Sarah?” My words come out like a choke, and I cough to clear my voice. “Sarah Collins?”
