My feet carried me right to her door. I had the clarity of mind to knock instead of barging in, but I was about to lose patience when the door opened. There, in an oversized Disciple’s supporter tee she’d worn to bed for years, her eyes slightly reddened from tears, was my Ash.

Mine.

“Go away, Sketch.”

Not a fucking chance.

I backed her into the room. She fought it until I muscled my way passed the door frame. Then, she threw up an arm and turned her back to me, walking away to put space between us. I shut the door and silently flipped the flimsy lock on the knob for good measure.

“What do you want?” she snapped.

“I didn’t fuck her.”

That affected her. I saw the way her body locked up for a moment before she could hide it.

“Good for you.”

“Ash,” I called.

“I don’t care if you fucked some slut.”

“I didn’t recognize her, not ’til Cami said something. But I didn’t fuck her anyway.”

“Sketch, just get out. I don’t care.”

She could throw attitude all she wanted. I wasn’t going anywhere.

“If I’d realized who she was, I wouldn’t have fucking touched her at all. I would have thrown her ass out.”

Ash didn’t even respond that time. She just turned to glare at me, her arms crossed and her hip popped out just slightly. She was a work of fucking art.

“Doesn’t matter, though. I threw her ass out once I realized I couldn’t fuck her. Didn’t matter that I had no idea who she was.” Still nothing from Ash, so I went on. “I couldn’t fuck her, firefly. I couldn’t have her when she wasn’t you.”

That got through. I watched the nickname her dad had given her as a little girl cause the crack, and my confession impart the shattering blow.

Her first retaliation was anger.

“You expect me to believe you haven’t fucked any club sluts since I’ve been gone? Are you kidding me?”

Call me a pervert, but her anger always did something to me. Ash didn’t get angry easily. She wasn’t one to show that kind of emotion often. When I got it, it always got to me. Probably because I knew I was the only person she would blow up at like that.

“No. I didn’t say that. I’ve fucked other women. You were gone, and eventually I had to accept that. Now, you’re not gone. You’re right fucking here, and I won’t settle for anything else anymore.”

“I—” she stuttered. “What are you saying?”

I moved across the room, not containing my grin when she backed into the wall, trapping herself. I got right up against her, feeling her tits press against me, loving the slight tremble that I knew wasn’t fear moving through her, glorying in the way she jerked from my hard on only to subtly press back against it.

“I’m saying,” I answered, leaning down so my mouth was right at her ear, running my tongue along the shell, “that you’re mine.”

I absolutely adore Sawyer Bennett’s Cold Fury Hockey series! This time around, readers get a new player’s story – one who we don’t know much about because he just joined the Fury, but Hawke is a good fit for the team and he’s definitely like all of Bennett’s other hockey alphas in the fact that his past has affected his view on relationships and his focus has been solely hockey for many years.

But Hawke is also a bit different than the previous heroes because the heroine is from his past, so they have a lot of baggage that exists between them and both of them have overwhelming emotions due to how their relationship ended – feelings that become a jumbled mess when they become part of each other’s lives after 7 years of separation and the state of their connection becomes even more tenuous due to the hurt and betrayal that festers in their hearts.

Vale and Hawke’s younger selves were free spirits; they wanted to experience everything in life and they wanted to do it together, but somewhere in the course of their wild and uninhibited adventures, things got too far out of control and decisions were made that ultimately ended everything good that Vale and Hawke had, resulting in them taking much different paths and never resolving the conflict between them.

Now there’s a wall built up between Vale and Hawke that Hawke refuses to fully tear down because he’s too stubborn to see their situation for what it was and how it is now, which only further fuels the passion and the hate between Vale and Hawke, and what happens due to that roaring flame can either heal or further destroy both of their lives.

Can a couple move forward from a past that still remains completely unresolved or are they destined to keep making the same mistakes because they can’t let go of the hurt and see the truth? “Hi,” I managed to say.

Nate nodded toward my legs. “Your pants are making me hungry.”

Aaaand that was the point where I stopped breathing. Except to say, “What?”

His eyes trailed down my body and rested on my thighs. Self-conscious, I looked down, almost sighing with relief when I realized my lower half was indeed covered this time, but that feeling went away pretty fucking fast when I saw the ice cream cones on my pajama pants practically flinging themselves at him.

Yes, I’d gone out in public in pajamas, so sue me. I hadn’t counted on running into…well, anybody.

“Oh. Oh yeah, um…I like ice cream,” I mumbled. “Especially from Licked, my friend Ryleigh’s store, although I have to say, her boozy shakes are unreal, especially the Make Me Quake Shake, which has these amazing pieces of those Ferrero Rocher balls in them, and they just give it the perfect amount of crunch so that you—” I stopped and took a breath when I noticed his grin getting wider. I swallowed and then said, “Not that I go there all the time or anything. Because I don’t. I mean, I’ve only been once or twice. You know…to taste test. Actually, I never eat sweets.”

He laughed then, and those penetrating eyes, tinged with more green than brown today, made their way up my body once more, pausing with what looked like amusement at my full hands. Then his gaze was on me and those dimples were out in full force.

“That’s too bad,” he said. “I’ve got a helluva sweet tooth.”

Wait…was he flirting with me? Was that a come-on? Or just stating a fact?

“Yeah, well, in that case your dentist probably hates you,” I said, readjusting the cold-ass meals in my arms. I’d be damned if I let those suckers go now. I’d tied my jacket around my waist, and my thin tank top would reveal a tit-bit more than I needed him to see.

He chuckled at that. Hmm. He had a nice chuckle. And a husky laugh. Both of which made my eyes zoom in on his throat. I wondered if it was as warm as it looked. He must’ve caught me staring, because he coughed, bringing my attention back to his face. His eyes were twinkling something wicked.

“You might be right about that,” he said. “Maybe I don’t like people telling me what to do. Or dictating what I can and can’t put in my mouth.”

My mouth dropped open, but I quickly snapped it shut. This guy was obviously a charmer, and after dealing with guys like him all day, the last thing I would do was fall prey to another arrogant playboy. Nope. Not me. Not gonna happen.

Review

I love quirky, adorable heroines whose internal dialogue is both witty and rambling, and Brooke Blaine’s newest heroine, Shayne, is every bit the lovable, foot-in-mouth girl that I adore to read about because she truly doesn’t see how amazingly unique she is, which only makes those around her love her more.

Shayne may be the finest “hooker-upper” in LA, but her hook-up expertise doesn’t apply to her own life partly due to her inability to follow through with her good intentions and partly because she’s a lot to take own – her craziness, her long-winded musings, and her eclectic style. But all of the things that make Shayne a complex woman are the exact reasons that she deserves her own happily ever after – her own man to sweep her off her feet and be her perfect match.

Nate Ryan just might be Shayne’s other half because he knows how to push her buttons and he refuses to back down from her even when her mouth has no filter and she tells him exactly what she thinks in more words than necessary. Brooke Blaine does a great job of illustrating Nate and Shayne’s flirty interactions and witty banter, allowing readers to see beyond Shayne’s words and understand that even though her mouth says one thing, her body and her heart show something much different.

Nate and his suspenders had me on the hook from the very beginning, and there was no way Shayne wasn’t going to fall for him as well; slowly but surely, Nate proves to be the guy for her, but of course complications have to arise, causing some double dealings to take place that put Shayne in a rather precarious position – one that might just cost her everything.

Hooker is a fantastic romantic comedy; it has an amazing group of characters – ones, who even though they are secondary to the plot, play a major role in the hero and/or heroine’s life. Shayne’s bond with her three girlfriends is one of the aspects I love about Blaine’s L.A. Liaisons series, and she writes those interactions so well that it allows readers to visualize those scenes and hope to have friendships like that themselves. Another secondary character who definitely needs his own story some day is Ace. He’s not who the paparazzi has made him out to be, which is exactly why Shayne feels the need to help him even if it drastically complicates her life.

Shayne’s story is comical, steamy, and highly entertaining due to her and her friends’ antics. Shayne is a nut, which works so well for Hooker’s storyline and further endears her to readers and characters alike. I can’t wait for Pagie’s story because after being introduced to her sworn enemy and witnessing their interaction, it’s definitely going to be an adventure for PITA and readers.

Each new release by Alessandra Torre has dynamic characters, a twisty storyline, and writing that is fluid throughout the text. Torre’s versatility as a writer is showcased in Love, Chloe; what makes Love, Chloe different from Torre’s other books is that it’s a romantic comedy, which is a complete 180 from the dark and twisted reads readers are used to getting from her.
