Synopsis

Michael Valente…

My father was the Underboss of an organized crime family. He was murdered when I was a teenager leaving me broken. My mother died in a tragic accident, her death annihilated me. My life was in shambles until Victor Pastore, one of New York’s most notorious gangsters and my late father’s best friend, recruited me to work for him.

Everyone expected me to walk in my father’s shadow, to be the prodigal son, the next big thing to hit the mob. I was torn between filling those expectations and walking the straight line my mother wished I had. Nothing made sense and I felt as if I was just passing through life.

The only beacon of light in my otherwise dark world was the one girl that was off limits to me. The one girl who could bring me to my knees consuming my mind, body and soul.

She’s the sweetest temptation I’ve ever known and the most illicit.

Nikki Pastore….

My father’s a gangster. My boyfriend’s is the king of New York’s nightclubs. I am often labeled as Vic’s daughter or Rico’s girl, never just Nikki. I struggle for people to acknowledge me for the woman I am and not for the men in my life. I’m fighting a losing battle.

There is only one person who sees me for me, my Mikey.

He’s wild.
He’s reckless.
He’s hot as hell.

He’s completely unattainable, but oh so tempting.

ILLICIT TEMPTATIONS- PROLOGUE

Present Day: Michael

It all happened so quickly. I chased the sound of her desperate cries, her dull voice begging for someone to help her. I turn the corner of the abandoned warehouse careful not to make my presence known. I breathe through my mouth because the stench in the air is so vile smelling like piss, death and filth. There is silence. I can’t make out her cry anymore. The only sound I catch is the water dripping from the leak in the roof onto the concrete floor.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

“Help me. Dear God, please help me,” she cries out. Her voice sounds weaker than before, as if she’s giving up, resolving that no one will answer her plea for help.

I step in something sticky forcing me to glance down at my foot that is now covered in blood. My eyes follow the trail of crimson to the dead body that is decomposing in the corner. I want to scream. My gut clenches thinking of all the horrors my girl must have been exposed to and how it’s all my fault.

I failed her.

I won’t fail her now.

Never again.

I take a few more steps, hiding behind a palette of wooden crates, peaking between them, I spot her. My girl. She’s sitting in a metal chair. Her wrists are tied behind her back and her ankles are tied together. Her head is down so I can’t see her face but I notice she’s still wearing the same clothes as she was the day they took her. I silently will her to lift her head. I need to get a look at her face. I need to see she’s okay.

“No one’s here to save you sweetheart.” I hear a taunting voice speak to her.

I’m here to save her you fuck.

His body comes into my view as he stands in front of her, slowly bending so they’re eye level. I watch, struggling not to do anything stupid, hearing Vic’s voice in my head reminding me not to be a cowboy.

Patience.

Her life is at stake.

He cups her face not so gently and forces her to look up at him. He blocks my view of her so I shift to my right hoping to catch a glimpse.

“My father will kill you.” She shouts. “Do you hear me? He will kill you! Just let me go.”

He laughs. “Your father can’t save you little girl just like he couldn’t save his best man. And when you’re dead, he won’t do anything either just like he didn’t after I killed Val. Daddy’s not in control anymore, you’re at my mercy.”

I freeze for a moment at the mention of my father. The man who has his back to me, the man torturing my girl, is the same man who killed my father. I didn’t even have a chance to process the information because his hand reared back and slapped Nikki across her face. He takes a step backward, and she comes into my view, lifting her head slowly. Her eye make up is running down her face. One of her cheeks is red, branded from that son of a bitch’s hand and yet she’s still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

Something is triggered inside of me and I know it’s time to end this nightmare. I straighten my posture, my hand securely holding my gun at my side. Slowly I lift my hands, my gun cocked aiming the barrel of it straight at the back of the enemy’s head. I look at Nikki once more, she’s all the strength I need to pull the trigger. She turns her head, her dull brown eyes meet mine and for the slightest moment I see life reborn in them.

I take one hand off my gun and lift a finger to my lips, signaling her to stay silent. I want the motherfucker to be surprised when I riddle him with bullets. I hold her gaze and hope she trusts I won’t let anything else happen to her.

I’m here Princess

You’re safe now.

I gradually step around the pallet I was hiding behind and creep up behind him, keeping a steady eye on my girl. I wrap my finger around the trigger. This is it. I’m about to kill a man. I’m about to put someone else’s blood on my hands. I am about to walk in my father’s shoes.

I avert my eyes to the back of my target’s head, tearing my gaze away from Nikki. I lift the gun and then it happens…

“Mikey watch out!!” She screams.

I pull the trigger.

All of a sudden my gun isn’t the only one going off in the warehouse. The sound of gunfire erupts as I watch my bullet pierce my victim. I turn toward Nikki, hurrying to make my way to her. My victim falls face forward onto the floor, a single shot to the head killing him instantly. Nikki screams out as his blood splatters onto her. She’s shaking her head screaming no as I struggle to make my way to her.

“Mikey Get down!!” She screams through her sobs.

I don’t fully comprehend what she’s saying. I think I’m still reeling from the fact that the man I put a bullet in was about to kill her— just like he killed my old man. All I cared about was taking her in my arms and holding onto her for dear life. I needed to touch her, to feel her, to know she really was okay.

She is shaking her head violently forcing me to focus on what she is trying to warn me of. I glance over my shoulder, eyes wide as I see the ambush Victor and his men are taking part in, guns blazing as they seek revenge on the rival family that held his daughter captive for two days.

They don’t go down easily and men start appearing from all over the warehouse, firing back at Victor and his gang. I lift my gun, ready to help Victor, out of the corner of my eye I notice a man to my left, his gun aimed at Nikki. I keep my gun aimed at the men firing against Victor and look over my shoulder towards my girl. She’s oblivious to the gun pointed at her and there is little she could do to protect herself since she’s still tied to the chair. I walk backwards towards her, debating if I have time to take out the gunman.

I turn my gun towards the man aiming at Nikki but he pulls the trigger.

I’m too late.

“No!” I hear myself cry out as I run, attempting beat the speed of the bullet. I dive on top of her, my body shielding hers, knocking her and the chair she is tied to backwards as the bullet sears through my flesh.

I’m here Princess. You’re safe.

The gun slips from my hand as I roll off Nikki. I stare up at the ceiling. I hear her crying beside me, I try to reach for her hand but I can’t move. The heat sears through my body. I’m trying to contain the blood, but it pours from my wound uncontrollably. There are more gunshots fired. I hear Nikki’s cries become muffled until everything fades to black.

Review

This was my first book by Mary Elizabeth, and the synopsis intrigued me from the start; I liked  how different the story line was and how there wasn’t really a hero/heroine per say because they were bank robbers, and Mary Elizabeth portrayed Low and Posey in a way that allowed readers to see beyond their criminal actions and try to understand the reasons for their unlawful decisions.

I also liked the Bonnie and Clyde feel to the bandits, but Low and Posey stand out in their own right too because they’re not your typical criminals; they may be on the most wanted list, but all Low and Posey want is to get out of the hood and live their lives with nothing more than the essentials of survival: food, shelter and not much else. But that just doesn’t seem in the cards for them, so when Low feels like his back is against the wall and there’s no other way to turn, his criminal background shines through because desperation makes him see no other way and add to that the fact that he feels guilty for dragging Posey into his outlaw life, he’ll do anything to take care of her even if it means sacrificing himself in order to do so.

While there are aspects of the story that worked well for me, some things did not work for me. But I do have to say that this book seems to be a case of it’s not you…it’s me because the other reviews I’ve seen of Low from bloggers who read a lot of the same stories as I do loved Low and Posey’s story while I was left a little out of sorts throughout the Four-Four Bandits crime spree.

Low and Posey’s crime spree is a well written and suspenseful plot line, but I didn’t feel at all connected to them as characters. Some of it might be from the fact readers aren’t privy to Posey’s perspective, so it’s difficult to ascertain why it’s essential for her to stand by Low and live the dangerous lifestyle she finds herself immersed in due to the risks she’s willing to take because of her love for Low.  I also didn’t get a true sense of where their love stems from because the ways in which they talk to each other didn’t mesh well with the concept of undying love. But their circumstances are quite bleak, so it does stand to reason that their relationship would be a bit different and unconventional, and intellectually, I understand that, but I still would have liked to feel Low and Posey’s connection more and why Posey chose to stand by Low no matter what happened.

Even though some parts of Low left me feeling a bit conflicted about the story as a whole, I do know that readers will enjoy this outlaw story and find themselves symphatizing with Low and Posey and the circumstances that left them with no other choice but to live a life of crime in order to survive.

3.5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

“Keep the engine running,” I say. “If I’m not out in five minutes, leave.”

Poe nods her head, but doesn’t argue.

When the nine o’clock hour comes, both she and I watch the clock on the dashboard turn to one minute after.

“You’ll need to keep your mask on, Poesy. Make sure none of your hair is showing,” I say. “Keep your head down the entire time.”

“Okay,” she answers in a small voice.

“If you see cops—”

“I know what to do, Lowen. I know you want me to leave you.” She sighs. “But I don’t know if I can.”

Despite our circumstances, I smirk. “Hopefully you won’t have to.”

At nine thirty, Poe and I switch seats, and she gets behind the wheel while I load the pistol. With hands that shake uncontrollably, I place the ski mask over my head but don’t pull it down my face. I help Poesy with hers, tucking in every stray strand of hair so they remain unseen.

She grabs my wrist, and our eyes meet. I see fear combined with love and loyalty in her stare.

I kiss her knuckles and promise with the chance of lying, “We’re going to be okay.”

Unlike when we drove into the garage, the streets are alive and filled with a variety of automobiles, and dirty sidewalks carry several pedestrians. The forty-second drive to the bank feels like forty years. Thick blood courses through my veins, and I feel it flow through arteries and vessels, nourishing muscle and bone. My head echoes with the thump, thump, thump of my hard heartbeat. Every breath is shallower than the one before it.

“Pull down your mask,” I say, but my voice sounds foreign and feels a million miles away.

As Poe drives into California Credit Union’s parking lot, I grip the cold steel in my hand.

The edges of my vision blur; I’m blinded by adrenaline.

My skin crawls like I’m covered in spiders; I’m delirious with edginess.

“Your ski mask,” Poesy shrieks. “Cover your fucking face, Lowen.”

My girl reaches over and pulls it down for me. The car stops to a screeching halt, and reality crashes into me in a brutal rush, stripping me of air and voice.

“If we’re in this, you need to go,” Poesy says in a calm but stern tone, hidden behind her black mask.

There’s peace in her eyes.

There’s strength in the girl who stayed with me when I was locked up.

The one who’s remained by my side, believing and starving all at the same time.

With the gun in my hand and determination in my heart, I leave Poesy in the car and push open the glass double doors into the bank.

As I step foot onto the burgundy carpet, I yell, “Everyone down on the fucking floor!”

REIGN M.N_

Review

The bad boy and the good girl story is a conventional plot line in romance novels, but the way M.N. Forgy stretches that concept to its breaking point in Reign is definitely different than what readers are used to…because the bad boy is an emotionless killer…a product of his environment…a tortured man who thrives on madness and mayhem. The good girl is most definitely on the right side of the law, but she’s so far right that she has the badge and the sense of justice to go along with it, and in a city where the outlaws rule the law and send out their own form of justice, it doesn’t seem like the side one would want to be on and survive.

But what happens when a line is crossed on both sides of the law, and the bad becomes a little better and the good becomes a little badder? What happens when lives are on the line and your obsession could get you both killed?

Zeek only knows one way to live and it’s the ruthless lifestyle of an outlaw – one that feeds off the smell of violence and terror…one who is incapable of trust, love, and family because those are things he feels he doesn’t deserve or wouldn’t know how to immerse himself in when for most of his life, he’s been nothing more than an animal without feelings.

But there’s more to the president of the Sin City Outlaws even though society’s perception of him has never allowed him to live outside the life of a criminal…of a killer…of a menace to society. But that’s about to change, at least when it comes to a certain rookie deputy because his obsession with her is not something he can let go of regardless of the danger it puts them both in. Because when Zeek and Jillian are together, he’s not the bad guy and she’s not the good girl – they’re just two people who share a connection that they can’t deny.

Zeek and Jillian’s story is absolutely about loyalty, deception, honor, and betrayal, but at its core, it’s about a man and a woman, who may come from two very different worlds with different rules, but regardless of their differences, their hearts and bodies crave the one thing that might just seal their fate – each other.

Be warned, there’s a doozy of a cliffhanger at the end of Reign, but, in my opinion, that only adds to its intrigue because after everything that went down and the insights readers and Jillian have gained, nothing is going to be the same for the outlaw and the deputy and what their new life looks like is still up for interpretation, but there’s one thing for sure, they’re no longer safe and their secret is no longer hidden.

“Really? You got me donuts?” I arch a brow, dropping the lid.

He turns, a mischievous smile fitting his face.

“Don’t all cops like donuts?” he jeers. I roll my eyes, placing my hand on my hip.

“That’s so stereotypical,” I huff.

“Oh, really?” he replies, grabbing the box off the table, a smug smile still on his face.

“I’ll get rid of them then.”

“No, wait!” I nearly trip over my feet trying to grab the box of donuts. He holds them higher than me and smiles so big I think I see two dimples. Really, he’s pulling the notorious bully move holding them just above my reach? Why am I attracted to him again?

“I thought you didn’t like them,” he taunts.

“I do like them. A lot, actually.” I cross my arms, my cheeks flushing. My dad used to always take me to the local bakery to get donuts on the weekends. I would get whatever I wanted—usually anything with sprinkles—and we would drop the rest off at the department. What can I say, embrace your stereotypes.

“So, it’s true. Cops love donuts,” he states arrogantly, sitting the box back down.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ AND REVIEW: Chasing Spring by R.S. Grey

Title: Chasing Spring
Author: R.S. Grey
Release Date: Feb 1, 2016
Find on Goodreads
I thought I’d left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn’t belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn’t listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.
I didn’t ask for a hero. I don’t want to be saved.
To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin’ out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I’d assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost girl.
I didn’t want to be her hero. Some girls don’t need to be saved.

review

Chasing Spring is very different from the romantic comedies that readers have come to expect from R.S. Grey, which speaks to her diversity as a writer and her ability to draw on many other emotions besides happiness and joy.

The subject matter of Lilah and Chase’s story is one of quilt, regret, grief, and sadness.  It’s a story that illustrates the lasting impact of bad decisions and all those who suffer at the hands of one person’s missteps.

The title itself is metaphorical in the sense that Spring represents a number of events and emotions that occurred during that time frame in both the past and the present, situations that were more dark and ugly than light and beautiful. Spring is supposed to be about renewal and growth, but those pleasant memories have been replaced by the sins of the past, destroying everyone in their path and irrevocably changing lives, especially those of Lilah Calloway and Chase Matthews – two best friends, just like their mothers, but due to circumstances out of their control, their friendship has fractured and what lies in its place is misplaced blame and the fear of ruining everything regardless of how unlike their mothers Lilah and Chase truly are.

Lilah has been chasing spring ever since her mother left her at a young age and no matter how tenacious she is in her quest to outrun it and create beauty in place of the loneliness and desperation she feels, she can’t do it alone, but she doesn’t want to reach out to the one person who could help her, Chase, because she feels like they’re going in the opposite directions and the path that Chase is on is not one Lilah sees herself pursuing no matter how much she loves and wants Chase to be hers.

R.S. Grey does a great job of allowing readers to understand how Lilah’s life and focus completely changed two years ago, and even though she’s back in her hometown of Blackwater, the place where she lost who she was unless she’s willing to face her past as well as the true nature of the events that occurred, she’ll never be whole again no matter how hard Chase tries to bring out the old Lilah and prove to her that they can get through anything as long as she lets him in for good.

Chasing Spring is a coming of age story that illustrates what happens when innocence is shattered and lives are destroyed by one person’s selfish acts. But even though the undertones of the story are weighed down with darkness and depression, there’s always hope…there’s always light because each year, spring will come back around, so a fresh start is always within one’s grasp as long as that person’s willing to reach out and begin anew.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

FORBIDDEN VALENTINE

EXCERPT

Dani couldn’t catch her breath. Ransom was insatiable, devouring her mouth like a man starved. She curled her arms around his neck, throwing herself into his dark kiss, exhilarated by his need for her, and hers for him.

Of the few boyfriends she’d had, none had affected her like this man—a near stranger. Someone who was, as far as she could tell, damaged. And not an average, run-of-the-mill kind of damage that nearly everyone in the world experienced.

This was soul-deep. His heart hadn’t just broken. It’d been shattered. And it was obvious to her that he was desperately searching for something to numb the pain. Help him forget. He’d chosen booze, and because of her own past demons, she hated it. Which was why, when he’d confessed his affliction, she’d drawn a line, putting an end to his self-abuse.

Her need to help, to fix, was in full-effect. Her ex always said it was her worst quality. Told her on numerous occasions that she was a fool for caring so much. That it would be her downfall.

Maybe she was and maybe it would be, but at least she would know that, in whatever small way, she’d helped.

And even if Ransom didn’t know it yet, he needed her.

But maybe not in the capacity he was currently aiming for.

As much as Dani loved the feel of his mouth on hers, his tongue dipping and diving into every unchecked corner, stoking a fire inside that threatened to blaze out of control, she knew if she allowed this to continue, she’d be taking advantage.

“Ransom.” With regret, she broke the sensational kiss, determined to end this before it went too far, but Ransom only detoured, licking and nibbling a path down the side of her neck that made her shiver.

“You taste so good,” he murmured against her heated skin. “So sweet. And you smell like heaven.”

Obsession, actually. She’d picked up a bottle on clearance following the holidays…What the hell was she going on about? She needed to put an end to this madness before it got out of control. And with the way her body was responding to his every touch and caress, that moment was fast approaching.

Tunneling her fingers through his hair, Dani formed a tight grip, intending to pull him away, only to hold him closer as his warm, wet mouth found the top of her breast. The way he lavished her body with attention, feasting on every inch of her flesh with an almost feral passion, was addictive. Dani had never had a man react to her that way. It was as if he couldn’t get enough. His hands gripped her hard, one around her hip, the other her right butt cheek. His mouth skated across her cleavage, worshiping her as he forged a path toward her hardened nipples. And his body—hard in all the right places—pinned her in place, demanding fealty that she was tempted to give.

Her back hit a wall, rattling a painting, and his knee wedged between her thighs. Heat seared her, clenching her core, and Dani moaned. As his hand left the curve of her ass and slipped around her thigh, her head began to lighten, her thoughts growing foggy.

The only noise between them was that of heavy breathing and the soft lapping of his tongue. When she felt his fingers pass over the top of her thigh and sweep up the center, painting a vivid picture of what he planned to do to her, she clenched her eyes shut and hated herself for what she was about to do.

Author: L.B. Dunbar
Genre: Contemporary New Adult Romance/MMA
 Release Date: January 25, 2016

I’m not a fighter.

I was born into a fighting family. As the middle child, I was overlooked in favor of my older brother.

He took the negative attention, too. In comparison, there’s nothing special about me.

I’m not as big as Cobra. I’m not as strong as Cobra. He’s the alpha.

I’m a beta.

The second son.

The lesser one.

The one never encouraged to fight, never encouraged to do anything, but stay out of my father’s way.

I’m not a lover either – but I wished to be – that’s why I needed her.

I met a girl in the pouring rain.

Sounds cliché, but it’s true. It changed everything.

Because of love, I learned to fight.

Betas come second, but in this fight, my story is first.

Excerpt

If I thought I was going to make a speedy getaway, I was wrong. My savior caught up to me, half way down the walk, outside the finance building. He was quick and a large hand wrapped around my upper arm.

“Whoa, sister,” he said, slightly out of breath. “You almost got away from me again.”

“What?” I questioned. I had no idea what he meant: again.

“Never mind,” he muttered, his hand still on me. I looked down at it and he immediately released me. My eyes pinched as I realized I didn’t mind his hand on my skin. There was something nonthreatening about him. He seemed rather innocent, studious, actually. His shirt was buttoned almost to the top and tucked into his pants. The sleeves secure at the cuffs. His jeans were snug and hugged him well. He wore dark rimmed glasses that screamed smart. Brown boots looked too new on his large feet. It was like he had the right parts but the wrong combination.

His blue eyes were soft and easy to look into. They practically spoke to me, but I had no idea what he was saying. His dark hair was disheveled, a bit shaggy, but cool looking. He kind of looked like a pop star, which was a little too sugar sweet for me. His form was questionable. It was hard to tell what kind of body he had under those clothes. He looked rather preppy, like half the guys at this university. I didn’t want to think about it. I’d just sold my soul for another semester.

“So when do you want to do this?” I asked. His blank stare told me he had no idea what I meant.

“Us,” I said, pointing between him and me.

“I…” His voice trailed off as he gawked at me. His expression changed from confusion to shock.

“I didn’t buy you to sleep with you,” he said, a touch of disbelief in his voice. His face turned crimson, then fell. “Why, have you done that before?” It was my turn to be surprised and offended.

I turned on my heels and began stomping away from him. He was too quick and he caught me again. His hand on my arm halted me. This time he didn’t release me when I peered down at his fingers wrapped around my bicep.

“Look. I need help,” he blurted. His face pinked a little, and it was sweet. “I don’t need help with sex. I need help with before.” His tone dropped, and he looked side to side to see if anyone would hear him. I took his meaning.

“You don’t know how to do foreplay?” I questioned in a loud whisper, trying to hide my astonishment. How could anyone have sex and not know a touch of foreplay?

His face pinked again.

“Not that,” he said, sounding like a child. “The flirting. The dating. The…other stuff.”

I was stunned. I stared at him, taking in his features again. He was kind of cute, leaning toward the potential for good looking. He couldn’t possibly need help with this request. The confusion on my face made him speak.

“I don’t know how to flirt.” The words swirled between us.

“I don’t understand.” I didn’t. I didn’t know what he wanted from me.

“I need lessons how to be…cool: with girls. Call it a tutoring session. I need to learn how to be…seen.” His voice took on a touch of sadness. He couldn’t possibly be serious. I continued to stare at him. My mouth might have actually dropped open a bit, and I noticed he was watching my lips. It was a little exciting the way he stared at them. I licked them and his pupils dilated, filling in more black over the blue. His expression changed. Knowingly, he blinked when he realized I was teasing him. His lip quirked up and a dimple showed in his cheek.

“I need to date you,” he blurted. “To learn how to do, what you just did to me.”

Review

I’ve been anxiously waiting for the conclusion of Anna and Xavier’s story since the explosive ending of book one. I knew going into Xavier Cold that they were going to have to fight through all the bullshit occurring at Tension with Rex, Vicky and Deena, but I didn’t expect the shitstorm to come in as many directions as it did, causing Xavier to shut down and feel like Anna was better off without him.

In book two, readers are privy to more of the demons of Xavier’s past and why he does his best to forget that time in his life despite the nightmares he still endures. But back in Detroit, he’s forced to face them head on, which further puts a divide between him and Anna because he’s not good at sharing or letting people in because he’s used to them leaving him, but if Xavier can’t control his actions and be more open and honest with Anna, the darkness might completely take over and leave him without the only person who brings in the light.

As hard as it was to hear everything that Xavier went through as a child/teen, it made it easy to understand why he self-destructed so often and flew off the handle so easily. Not only did he have to deal with his grandmother, but the area he lived in, The Block, didn’t give him much of a chance either, forcing Xavier down a path that he knew wasn’t right, but one that he didn’t know how to get out of because he didn’t know what else to do or where to go to get what he needed.

I loved getting more of X’s point of view in Xavier Cold because it forced me not to feel wrecked by his secretiveness or his inability to trust Anna completely because it was made clear by his inner turmoil why he chose to do what he did when it came to not letting Anna fully in for much of the story.

Anna illustrates how much she’s grown as a person when she does her best to soothe Xaiver’s rage and proves that he’ll never lose her because they’re stronger together. There are times throughout the text that readers can feel how heartbroken she is by Xaiver’s inability to trust and his constant need to protect her by pushing her away, but we also can sense her strength and her resolve to stand by her man even when it doesn’t feel like he wants her to do so.

There are a few twists in the story that I didn’t see coming, which added to the intrigue of the story line, but at the center of the plot was Xavier’s struggle to move on from his past and accept Anna’s unconditional love without doubting that she’s going to stick around forever, which is why I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

On the surface, I have it all—a career I adore, a loving family, the Nixon metabolism but not the Nixon ears, and a salary that supports my lavish taste in designer shoes, fine wine, and lacy lingerie…but I have no one to share it with.

Until the day I run into him—my one night stand from college with the cocky smile, let’s-get-out-of-here eyes, and dirty, dirty mouth.

Levi Brooks is six feet four inches of hot bearded fantasy. A sexy single dad with broad shoulders, strong hands, and a fantastically big…heart. (I mean, it’s massive. And generous. And it pumps so hard… um. Sorry. Lost my place.)

But he lives for his son, and he’s keeping me at a distance because he thinks I deserve someone better—a man who can give me more time, more attention, more of himself. He doesn’t believe he could ever be enough.

But he’s wrong.

He’s everything.

“So.” I glanced out the windows to the patio. “You want to go back out there?”

“Not really,” she said.

“You want to get out of here?”

She grinned. “Yeah. I do.”

I watched her rush up the stairs to get her things, and as soon as she was out of sight, I adjusted myself in my pants. My dick had jumped to life the second she said yeah, I do, as if the question had been you want to get naked and fuck? rather than something much less suggestive. Not that I didn’t want to get naked and fuck—hopefully I’d last a little longer than I had in the broom closet eleven years ago—but I didn’t want to make her feel like that’s what I expected. She wasn’t a horny nineteen-year-old college student anymore; she was a doctor, for fuck’s sake. She was beautiful and smart and mature and sophisticated, and a woman like her did not want some Neanderthal who probably needed a haircut and a new pair of shoes to throw her up against a wall for a five-minute fuck.

A woman like that deserved attention all night long. She deserved someone who would undress her slowly and delight in each new inch of her skin as it was revealed. Someone who would run his hands all over her body and find out where she liked to be touched, how she liked to be touched, what she wanted to hear whispered to her in the dark. Someone who would wrap those gloriously long legs around his neck and use his tongue until she begged for his cock, then use his cock until she begged for mercy.

Fuck. I could be that guy.

Except I couldn’t be. Not tonight. Because I wasn’t a horny college student anymore either—I was just a horny single dad who didn’t have the luxury of taking a woman home and lavishing all my time and attention on her the way I wanted to.

As soon as I had the thought, I felt guilty. Scotty was the love of my life and always would be, and whenever I felt the slightest bit resentful about something I couldn’t do because of him, that resentment was immediately crushed by shame. He didn’t ask to be born wired differently, into a terrible relationship, to a mother who would decide she couldn’t handle being a parent, to a father who wasn’t prepared for any of it. He was completely innocent, and he needed me to be a better man.

Running a hand through my hair, I exhaled and wondered if I should ask Jillian for a raincheck on a night when Scotty’s usual sitter could be there. If he woke up again and I wasn’t home yet, he might never get back to sleep. We’d be up all night, tomorrow would be miserable, and the whole start to the week would be off.

But she was so beautiful. And I hadn’t been this attracted to someone in so long.

“Fuck,” I muttered, checking my watch. What was the right thing to do? If she were a different sort of woman, if her brother-in-law weren’t my friend and client, if we lived three states apart…if any number of circumstances were changed, I’d grab her hand, drag her out to my car, and spend the next thirty minutes fucking her brains out in the back seat. It would feel so good to take control that way, to lose control that way, to release some of this fucking tension. But was that fair to her?

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

“Hello?”

“He’s up again.” Monica’s voice was strained, and in the background I heard the familiar keening of a nighttime meltdown. My chest hurt, the way it always did when Scotty was upset.

“Shit. OK, I’m on my way. Twenty minutes, OK? Thirty at the most.”

“OK.”

“Tell him he can play on his iPad.”

“That’ll just rile him up more. He’s tired. He needs to go to sleep.”

I clenched my fist. “Just do it, OK? It will help calm him until I get there.”

As I ended the call, I heard footsteps above, and then Jillian appeared at the top of the stairs carrying a small suitcase. I watched her descend, the tightness in my chest growing. Also the tightness in my pants. “Hey.”

“Hey,” she said, her face concerned as she reached the ground and saw my expression. She set down the suitcase. “What’s up?”

Sighing, I put my phone back in my pocket. “I have to get home. Scotty woke up and he’s upset.”

“Oh.” She tried to hide it, but I saw the disappointment in her eyes.

“I’m really sorry. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

“That’s OK. I understand.”

“Can I call you?”

“Of course.” She smiled, and her lips looked so soft and inviting, I took a step closer.

If you kiss her, it will be that much harder to leave.

I knew it was the truth, but I couldn’t help myself. One kiss. Just one. And then I’ll go. I moved even closer and took her head in my hands.

The curve of her smile deepened. “What are you doing?”

“I’m thinking about kissing you.”

“Stop thinking.”

I lowered my lips to hers and let them rest there, fully intending the kiss to be short and sweet, just a goodnight.

But I couldn’t break it off. I wanted more—I wanted to taste her. Slanting my head, I changed the angle of the kiss, teasing her mouth open with mine, slipping my tongue between her lips. A little sigh escaped her, and my dick jumped to life again.

You have to go, you have to go, you have to go.

But her hands were moving up my chest and my fingers were sliding into her soft brown hair and I could smell something sweet and citrusy on her skin and it mingled with the taste of whiskey on my tongue and oh God, I wanted my tongue everywhere on her body. I wanted make her come with it just so I could hear that little sigh again and again and again. And I wanted to feel my hands in her hair just like this while she got on her knees and took my cock between her lips, looking up at me with those big blue eyes…

Groaning, I forced myself to take my lips off her before I completely lost my senses. “God, I wish I could stay,” I said, resting my forehead against hers. “I wish a lot of things.”

“I know.” She played with my tie again. “I wish I was taking this tie off you, not straightening it.”

“What a coincidence, that’s one of my wishes too.”

She laughed and kissed me quickly. “Another time, maybe. You better go.”
