Excerpt

He’d lost track of time since the last couple had left. It was hard to tell when time to him was counted in centuries. So many years, and so many disappointments, but still he waited.  One day she would return, he was sure of it.  One day she would find him again, and then he would be able to put things right.  Only then would he finally be free. He also needed her to know that she’d been the only woman he’d truly loved, and what had happened had left him a broken man. Afterwards there had been no joy in anything in life, nor any peace in death.

His line of thought was interrupted by the sound of a heavy lorry on the road outside the cottage. He moved swiftly to the small window that looked out over the front garden and saw a removal van turn slowly into the drive.  His brown eyes, so dark they looked almost black, watched keenly as he waited for the occupants of the following car to get out.

The driver got out first, a very tall, broad shouldered man, in his late twenties he thought, with a mop of blond hair, dressed in the scruffy clothes so favoured by younger men now. But the man was of no interest to him. It was the woman he wanted to see. As the passenger door opened he realised that he was holding his breath, hoping, praying that at last, this time, it would be her.

She was holding one hand up to shield her eyes from the bright summer sunlight, and her long chestnut hair fell to her waist in the tight curls he remembered so well.  His fingers moved as he remembered the way her hair had felt when he’d run his fingers through it, and how she’d watched him, half-warily and half expectantly as she’d waited silent and obedient for him to take charge.

Next to the blond man she looked tiny, as small as he’d remembered her, and she was still as slender as a reed, with a tiny waist. She was wearing a pretty floral dress that reached to her ankles, and he realised it was the first time he’d seen her wearing anything other than black and white.  It was a shock, but apart from that nothing had changed, and through the ill-fitting window he heard the sound of her laughter, that well remembered sound of delight and excitement that he’d so often coaxed from her, and he knew that finally the wait was over.

Excerpt

Mac was sitting across from him with Tina’s chair situated flush against his, her mouth close to his ear. Probably whispering gross, sexual things to him. Yuck.

Taking a sip of her drink, ‘Talk Dirty To Me’ began playing and she reached out her hand to Zach. “Come on and dance with me,” she called out to him. Jokingly, she added, “It’s our song!”

He shook his head, giving her a rueful smile. “Next one,” he yelled back.

Raine blew him a kiss before she returned to the dance floor. Just as she had resumed dancing on her own, she felt hands strongly grip her hips from behind and a body press flush against her, moving suggestively. Raine froze, certainly not enjoying the sudden invasion of her space by a stranger. Then, a voice spoke in her ear, “Move with me, baby.”

No. Just, no.

Before she could remove herself from his grip, Mac appeared in front of her, holding out his hands for her to grasp. He gave a hard glare to the guy behind her that must have communicated something in man-speak to make the creeper let go of her. She mouthed “thank you” to which Mac merely winked.

He pulled her close as he danced with her, looking down with a wide grin on his face, that dimple of his making itself known. Twirling her quickly, he swung her back, close to his body as they continued to dance together.

Usher’s ‘Yeah’ came on next, causing her to squeal in excitement, making Mac shake his head in laughter, as he watched her begin to dance with vigor. He cast out an imaginary fishing line and she pretended to get hooked, with him reeling her in. They did the ‘lawnmower’ and ‘shopping cart’ moves, each of them bursting with laughter at each other’s antics.

“Now, we’re going to slow it down a bit for this next one,” came the DJ’s voice as the beginning of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ began to play.

Mac offered his hand to her. “May I?”

Eyes shining up at him, she took his hand. “You may.”

They slow danced together like they had a dozen times before. Like she had done with Zach or Lawson or even Foster.

Suddenly remembering that Mac hadn’t arrived alone tonight, she looked in the direction of their table. The guys were sitting there in conversation, but Tina was nowhere to be seen.

Her head swinging back toward Mac, Raine opened her mouth to ask about the absence of his ‘friend’ when he simply told her, “She left.”

Brows furrowed, Raine looked at him, waiting for further explanation. He simply shook his head. “Just dance with me.” He twirled her out and back again, but this time, she stumbled on the return and, off balance, came flush against his chest.

She looked up at him to apologize but suddenly faltered as she met his gaze. The way he was watching her was unlike the usual way in which he looked at her.  His gaze was noticeably different; heated and full of interest and with a hint of yearning?

No. That couldn’t be. She wasn’t even his type.

With her low heels on tonight, the top of her head still barely came up to his chin. She suddenly became aware of his hard body pressed against hers. She knew from when they went running together or to the beach that beneath his clothes was a well-defined chest and abs. But she felt more awareness in the air between them. Raine felt breathless, realizing her breasts were pressed against him, feeling his hardness against her stomach.

Mac leaned in closer, his hooded gaze locked onto her lips as her tongue slid out to wet them. Her breath hitched in anticipation. Just when she thought their lips would meet, she felt Mac press his forehead against hers instead. Raine exhaled slowly, trying to calm her own breathing.

What the hell just happened?

She had almost crossed the line with her friend. Willingly. Wanted to, even. And that was not okay.

“Mac?” she whispered to him with what she knew was a confused look on her face. He released her as the song ended and gave her a forced smile. “I’ve got to run to the restroom. Guard those hips of yours from creepy guys.” With a wink, he was gone.

Which left her to wonder whether she was upset about what had almost happened between them…or disappointed that it hadn’t.

***

What the fuck was that?

Mac scrubbed his hands over his face as he stared at himself in the restroom mirror, waiting in line behind another guy.

He’d come so close to kissing Raine on that dance floor. So fucking close that he could nearly smell the vanilla vodka from her drink. And breathe in the vanilla scent of her shampoo.

Fuck.

He needed to get his head straight. He could not –would not– screw this up. Raine was amazing and one of the best people he’d come to know. She had fast become one of his best friends, for God’s sake.

Is this why you sent Tina on her way?

The question nagged at him even though he knew the answer deep down.

After he finished in the restroom, he felt like he’d composed himself enough to return back to his friends. As soon as he exited, he stopped short as he saw Foster waiting for him, arms crossed in a stance that made him uneasy.

He nodded to him. “Hey, man.” Mac tried to walk past him casually, but Foster put his palm to his chest. Not terribly hard but forcefully enough to get him to stop.

Foster stepped up to his face, eyes hard. “What the fuck was that all about?”

Mac clenched his jaw so hard it was a wonder it didn’t crack. “Nothing. It was nothing,” he said behind clenched teeth.

“You’re damn right. It’d better be nothing. And that little ‘nothing’ shouldn’t happen ever again.” The last two words were punctuated with his index finger pushing into Mac’s chest. Hard enough to make him wince.

“Roger that.”

Holding Mac’s gaze a moment longer, Foster finally moved aside. “Need anything from the bar?”

“Nah, man. Thanks, anyway,” he answered.

He made his way back to the table to find everyone on the dance floor except for Zach. Zach was looking a bit tortured as he watched Laney enjoying herself and flirting openly with the guy she was currently dancing with.

Mac slid into the chair next to him and leaned in slightly to be heard over the loud music.

“Women, huh?”

Zach opened his mouth to respond but stopped. Then he looked over at Mac for a moment, studying him closely, making him a bit uncomfortable with the sudden scrutiny.

His friend turned his gaze back to Laney on the dance floor briefly before turning back again to Mac. “Just biding my time, friend.”

Mac looked at Laney dancing close to the guy. “Better not bide it for much longer. Don’t want to run out of it.”

“Same goes for you, too,” came the quick, unexpected response.

Whipping his head back to Zach, he gave him a cool look before glancing around the room, trying not to let his gaze linger on Raine.

“Don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Scoffing, Zach raised his eyebrows at him knowingly. “Seriously, man. It’s obvious what your kryptonite is.”

Mac flashed him a cocky grin. “Are you referring to me as Superman? Because, if so, I like it.”

Ignoring his attempt at diverting the conversation, Zach tilted his beer in the direction of Raine on the dance floor. “That right there is your kryptonite, man.”

Mac followed his gaze to the dance floor to see Raine, Tate by her side, arms raised in abandon, laughing with her head thrown back, hair cascading down her back in waves. The pure delight on her face, eyes sparkling in laughter, smiling widely, she was breathtakingly beautiful.

Beautiful and totally off-limits.

Tearing his gaze away from her, he shook his head and looked at Zach sharply. “Glass houses, dude.”

Zach raised his hands up as if in surrender. “No stone throwing from this guy.” He paused. “Just an observation.”

“Noted.”

“I gotta say, you chose well,” Zach remarked.

Mac’s look was cautious. “What do you mean?”

Zach looked back over to the dance floor to where Raine was dancing. “Raine is like a sleeper. You meet her and you think, eh, she’s cute and fun but nothing super striking about her-”

“Not true,” Mac interrupted. “Her smile.”

Zach nodded in agreement. “You’re right. But she’s not one to be classified as a stunner. Until you get to really know her and, suddenly, she’s become this witty, smart woman who is hot.”

Mac gave him a sharp look.

Zach help up a hand. “Ease up, dude. She’s like a sister to me. I’m just saying that if she weren’t, I would be the first in line to be her fan club president.”

Zach set down his beer, noticing the guy Laney had been dancing with had walked away from the dance floor. With a pat on Mac’s shoulder, he left to join Laney, twirling her around once before he began doing the running man and making her double over in laughter.

Mac’s eyes trailed over to Raine as she danced like a madwoman with Tate. Raine’s dress bounced around her legs and he watched as the muscles flexed with her movements. Her face was bright, showcasing the fun she was having with her friend.

He ran a hand over his face with a long sigh. For the first time in a while, he was regretting his decision to be the go-to designated driver.

Fuck it.

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

He rose from his seat and walked over to the two women on the dance floor.

It was then that he realized Zach was wrong. Raine wasn’t his Kryptonite.

She was his temptation.

She was his wildest dream.

And he had no business dreaming of her as his.

Review

Capture Me is a fantastic conclusion to Smith and Belle’s story – their respective pasts must be dealt with, and the outcome of those situations as well as the guilt Smith feels for tainting Belle’s life will push them both to their breaking points, which means that the solutions to their problems may wind up separating them instead of bringing them closer together when everything is said and done.

There has always been two sides to Smith Price, and it was clear early on that even though he sold himself to the devil, he still remained a man of his word. Smith has always been an honorable and protective man and even though he committed heinous crimes, he never allowed his choices to fully taint him, and when he met Belle Stuart, he refused to let the darkness consume him, finding a purpose and a reason to live in her need to be conquered and freed by him.

But as much as Smith tried to shield Belle from his world, there’s a price on both their heads, which means the action in Capture Me escalates quickly. Smith understands that’s there only one way to defeat his past and that’s to face it head on, which he’ll willingly do if it means that Belle remains safe, but there’s one thing that Smith didn’t think about when it came to his plan and that’s that Belle would not allow him to struggle on his own…that she would fight for him as much as he fights for her, which is not something he ever thought he would have again, and it’s now something he can’t live without.

Geneva Lee illustrates the passion, love, and commitment that exists between Smith and Belle in every action they do and in the words they speak. There’s no doubt that they would willingly die for one another because they give each other everything that they’ve desperately needed for so long. They are each other’s reason to fight…reason to submit…reason to conquer their pasts and start a future that includes nothing but dominance, submission, and freedom.

Review

Guilt can be a draining emotion, and Tyler Bell definitely has more than his fair share after forsaking his vow as a priest and giving into his feelings for Poppy. For a lot of the novella, Tyler is the one who seems like the list lamb, unable to stop tormenting himself with lingering doubts and never truly feeling like he’s enough…in God’s eyes, in Poppy’s eyes, and even in his family’s eyes.

Sierra Simone does a fantastic job of delving into Tyler’s head once again and sharing his overwhelming guilt and fears. It’s like he’s lost his direction…his purpose, and in doing so, he’s lost what’s defined him, and he doesn’t know how to get it back because all he seems to be doing is letting himself and the woman he loves down.

It’s clear that Tyler and Poppy’s life together is not going to be easy due to the circumstances of how their relationship began, and I love the fact that Simone writes about their struggles and Tyler’s crisis of faith because going from a priest solely devoted to God and his parish to being a husband and a student while still dealing with the aftermath of a decision that changed every aspect of his life cannot be easy and his conflicted feelings and struggles truly illustrate what Tyler and Poppy are going through even after being married for three years.

Tyler may see himself as unredeemable, but he is his harshest critic. His failures have the ability to make him stronger but the more guilt that builds up, the more penance he feels he needs to pay, but what’s left to give to others who need him?

Tyler Bell, in a way, is a contradictory man due to his extreme devotion to God and his need for control, submission, and kink; he still needs aspects of Father Bell to help him remained grounded and also to give Poppy what she craves.

Sierra Simone created one dirty, holy man in Father Tyler Bell, and I have to admit that I wouldn’t want him any other way;)

Blurb

A new dark romance series from the New York Times bestselling author of Twist Me

She fears him from the first moment she sees him.

Yulia Tzakova is no stranger to dangerous men. She grew up with them. She survived them. But when she meets Lucas Kent, she knows the hard ex-soldier may be the most dangerous of them all.

One night—that’s all it should be. A chance to make up for a failed assignment and get information on Kent’s arms dealer boss. When his plane goes down, it should be the end.

Instead, it’s just the beginning.

He wants her from the first moment he sees her.

Lucas Kent has always liked leggy blondes, and Yulia Tzakova is as beautiful as they come. The Russian interpreter might’ve tried to seduce his boss, but she ends up in Lucas’s bed—and he has every intention of seeing her there again.

Then his plane goes down, and he learns the truth.

She betrayed him.

Now she will pay.

NOTE: Capture Me is the first book about Lucas & Yulia and has a cliffhanger-ish ending. It’s a long novella/short novel of approximately 45,000 words (about 200 pages) and is a spin-off from the Twist Me trilogy. It’s not necessary to have read that trilogy to enjoy Capture Me, but the book does contain major spoilers for books 2 and 3 of Twist Me.

Excerpt

Author’s Note: This is from Yulia’s POV. For those of you familiar with the Twist Me series, this scene takes place in Moscow, when Lucas & Julian were there to meet with the Russian officials.

He steps into my apartment as soon as the door swings open. No hesitation, no greeting—he just comes in.

Startled, I step back, the short, narrow hallway suddenly stiflingly small. I’d somehow forgotten how big he is, how broad his shoulders are. I’m tall for a woman—tall enough to fake being a model if an assignment calls for it—but he towers a full head above me. With the heavy down jacket he’s wearing, he takes up almost the entire hallway.

Still not saying a word, he closes the door behind him and advances toward me. Instinctively, I back away, feeling like cornered prey.

“Hello, Yulia,” he murmurs, stopping when we’re out of the hallway. His pale gaze is locked on my face. “I wasn’t expecting to see you like this.”

I swallow, my pulse racing. “I just took a bath.” I want to seem calm and confident, but he’s got me completely off-balance. “I wasn’t expecting visitors.”

“No, I can see that.” A faint smile appears on his lips, softening the hard line of his mouth. “Yet you let me in. Why?”

“Because I didn’t want to continue talking through the door.” I take a steadying breath. “Can I offer you some tea?” It’s a stupid thing to say, given what he’s here for, but I need a few moments to compose myself.

He raises his eyebrows. “Tea? No, thanks.”

“Then can I take your jacket?” I can’t seem to stop playing the hostess, using politeness to cover my anxiety. “It looks quite warm.”

Amusement flickers in his wintry gaze. “Sure.” He takes off his down jacket and hands it to me. He’s left wearing a black sweater and dark jeans tucked into black winter boots. The jeans hug his legs, revealing muscular thighs and powerful calves, and on his belt, I see a gun sitting in a holster.

Irrationally, my breathing quickens at the sight, and it takes a concerted effort to keep my hands from shaking as I take the jacket and walk over to hang it in my tiny closet. It’s not a surprise that he’s armed—it would be a shock if he wasn’t—but the gun is a stark reminder of who Lucas Kent is.

What he is.

It’s no big deal, I tell myself, trying to calm my frayed nerves. I’m used to dangerous men. I was raised among them. This man is not that different. I’ll sleep with him, get whatever information I can, and then he’ll be out of my life.

Yes, that’s it. The sooner I can get it done, the sooner all of this will be over.

Closing the closet door, I paste a practiced smile on my face and turn back to face him, finally ready to resume the role of confident seductress.

Except he’s already next to me, having crossed the room without making a sound.

My pulse jumps again, my newfound composure fleeing. He’s close enough that I can see the gray striations in his pale blue eyes, close enough that he can touch me.

And a second later, he does touch me.

Lifting his hand, he runs the back of his knuckles over my jaw.

I stare up at him, confused by my body’s instant response. My skin warms and my nipples tighten, my breath coming faster. It doesn’t make sense for this hard, ruthless stranger to turn me on. His boss is more handsome, more striking, yet it’s Kent my body’s reacting to. All he’s touched thus far is my face. It should be nothing, yet it’s intimate somehow.

Intimate and disturbing.

I swallow again. “Mr. Kent—Lucas—are you sure I can’t offer you something to drink? Maybe some coffee or—” My words end in a breathless gasp as he reaches for the tie of my robe and tugs on it, as casually as one would unwrap a package.

“No.” He watches as the robe falls open, revealing my naked body underneath. “No coffee.”

Synopsis

He was my salvation.

Interviewing the notorious owner of ‘Ignition’ should have been simple. When asked to go home with him, I should’ve said ‘no.’ But Noah Hamilton’s tattooed, hard body and rugged features were impossible to resist. I wanted him to touch me. And I longed to be loved again. I craved the escape and was desperate to know him. Much like his lifestyle, our heated affair took off at warp speed, proving to be stronger than either of us anticipated. Trapped between my past and future, there was only one decision to make. So I ran…

She was my downfall.

From the moment Lizzie Ryder stepped into my shop, I wanted her. Had to have her. A reserved journalist with a body of sin and mesmerising eyes was all it took for me to fall. Hard. The night she let me touch her, taste her, I knew I was done for. I never deserved her, but needed to make her mine. She found the heart I never knew I had, brought it to life, and then crushed it to dust. And just like her storm-filled eyes, I drowned in the flood of her desertion. Reaching my breaking point, I struggled to forget the only woman I ever foolishly fell for and dove headfirst into my dark past, barely surviving her.

And now she’s back.

What happens when our weaknesses become our strengths? Do we reveal and fight…or keep our secrets and run? And can we withstand the devastation left after the Beautiful Storm?

Noah, are you awake?” Lizzie whispers, her voice breathy.

Her daft question makes me smile. I just moved. “Yeah.” I tighten my arms around her and lean in to kiss her temple.

“I love being here with you. Being cocooned in your arms. Held like you fear I might vanish at any second.”

“You planning on disappearing on me?” I ask. My voice’s gruff and my heart squeezes at the thought. But I do hold her like that.

“Never,” she answers confidently. And I feel her smile against my chest.

I let out a relieved breath I didn’t even realise I was holding as she continues.

“I thought I understood what love was, but the dream became battered and broken. I always believed love was a safe place, like here.” She traces the tattoos on my chest. “But did you know love could be twisted and painful? I know it’s really stupid, but I never realised it could hurt, not without betrayal.”

I can’t figure out where she’s going with this so I let her continue, but my chest gets tighter with each word.

“I’m worried because I love us. This.” She peers up at me through her lashes. “But I’m frightened by what I feel for you. It’s stronger than anything I’ve ever felt before, and it could crush me if I let it.” She moves her hand down to rub circles on the forearm wrapped around her waist, her gaze follows it.

Without exact words she just told me she loves me and I want desperately to tell her something she wants to hear, but I can’t.

“I don’t know what to say, angel. I could beg you to let me in, to trust me, and I could promise that I’ll never be that man, that I’ll never hurt you. But—” I shift so I can look into her eyes. “It’s probably likely. I’ve never done anything like this. Never wanted to.”

I keep to myself the reasons why and continue. “You distorted my world, made me view things a little differently. You made we want things I’ve never thought about before. Made me think about a future. But I can’t promise you I won’t mess up, and I can’t promise you a happy ending.”

The warning needs to be out there, no matter what feelings swirl around in me. I’m not relationship material and if we continue down the path we’ve taken she may get hurt, fuck, she will get hurt.

Synopsis

Sadie Miller and Brady Carson began their journey together two years ago. Now, after most of their friends have married, it’s finally their turn to say I do.

Brady has always been the patient one. He’s the father figure and sensible one of the group. But the fears of failing at marriage still run deep within him. A week before the girl he lives for takes his name, a surprise shows up on his doorstep, and his neatly organized life is thrown off-kilter.

Review

I Won’t Let Go – that was Brady and Sadie’s promise to each other after they dredged through the shame and guilt of their respective pasts and vowed to hold on to each other despite the chaos that surrounded them, and for two years, they have successfully kept that pact, but with their wedding only a week away, it seems as if the past is holding both of them back and the disconnect between them illustrates that Brady and Sadie may be pros at fixing other people’s problems, but they seem to have a hard time facing their own.

Through all the books in Michelle Lynn’s The Invisibles series, Brady and Sadie have, in a way, been the patriarchs of their circle of friends, always reaching out to help those in need and making sure their friends know they have their backs through everything. But now that Brady and Sadie’s wedding has become more about guest lists, dresses, and seating arrangements, both of them feel lost, and they’re drowning in past regrets and hurt feelings, which is turning what’s supposed to be the best day of their lives into something they just want to get over with as quickly as possible.

But if there’s one thing readers are meant to hold on to throughout the ups and downs of Brady and Sadie’s novella, it’s that their love for each other is always there and it never dulls because they saved each other and set one another free from their pasts when they never thought it could be done.

I’ve loved The Invisibles series since the first book and with each couple’s story, I felt more like I was a part of their family because I’ve witnessed all the trials and tribulations that they had to wade through and I’ve watched them grow into people they should be proud of because even though it took some of them quite some time to change for the better, they were able to with the help of one another and the person who claimed them as their own.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

I stand and swing my keys around my finger. An internal debate weighs inside of me on whether I should leave or not. “I’m going to head out.”

Trey swings his arm around my neck and puts me in a headlock. “Nah, we’re going to the park.” His knuckles rub along my skull.

“I’d rather leave.”

“I’d rather get laid every night, but those days are long gone.” Trey, Grant and Rob laugh. Paige hits Rob in the stomach and he pulls her closer to him. They’re still in that happily-ever-after phase. When you don’t see your relationship as anything but perfect. I miss those times.
