Are people born pure?

Is evil learned, or is it birthed into one’s soul, like a fallen angel who was previously part of graciousness?

Rhys is decayed, black, and bad. He cut distortion out of his life years before, but he let her live; his only way to gain redemption once more.

As his sinful needs blanket him with dread, he seeks penance from the soul he saw as a second chance.

Is absolution too late for Rhys?

**Warning, dark scenes depicted heavily throughout this novel. Read the Author’s disclaimer carefully before proceeding with this title.**

He brushed a tangled strand of dark hair away from the girl’s battered forehead, not an ounce of empathy filling his shadowy heart. He wished he could talk to God, but there was no God where he was birthed. God was learned. God was forced. He believed in Him once, only to be left. Stranded. Alone. Evil was easier. Turning to the darkness was the simplest route. Cutting them away from his life, making the hurt stop was the method to his madness, the start of something beautifully fucked that he would never be prepared for.

WRAPPED 2

Excerpt

The door creaked open. She stepped in just as Jason threw his shirt on the bed, naked from the waist up—every muscle well defined, ripped to perfection, and covered with various tattoos.

Heat.

Fire.

And crazy need stirred between her thighs. No surprise there. Jason naked, half-naked, or fully dressed, always managed to produce a reaction. Lately, she just couldn’t follow through.

A thick blanket of guilt smothered her heart.

They held each other’s gaze for a few seconds. “I don’t know where to start,” she said into the silence.

“Try the beginning.”

final debt teaser

Review

The end has come…the final debt must be paid, but it’s unclear who will pay it because, now, it’s so much more than simply the Hawks against the Weavers. Nila has vowed since the beginning of the series that she was going to rewrite history…that another Weaver woman would not be touched after her because she’s going to end the Hawks cruel, barbaric, and unjust reign over her family. But to accomplish that feat, Nila needs to become the very thing she hates – a Hawk – a predator, and even though her prey is larger and stronger than her, she has one thing that they don’t – she has nothing else to lose, so her dance with the devil…her plunge into purgatory is no worse than her would be fate at the hands of Cut and Daniel if she doesn’t do everything in her power to create a different ending for herself and those she loves.

Power. Corruption. Vengeance. These are the things that have driven the Hawks since their patriarch, Mabel Hawk, found a way to acquire wealth and control by any means necessary. And, even though their history delineates from their prescribed path at times due to a family member’s conscience and/or emotional investment, the Hawks have risen to power by underhanded contracts and actions that have never been tested until now.

Pepper Winters has always incorporated lessons and history in each of the Indebted series books, but in the Final Debt, she provides readers with multiple perspectives and accounts of how the Hawk family came to be and who held the reigns throughout the centuries. I whole heartedly agree that there are always multiple sides to the truth – that nothing is simply black and white or right and wrong, and by allowing us a full view and understanding of the past, present, and possibly the future of the feud between the Hawks and the Weavers, it’s easy to understand what’s been at stake for both families since the beginning. It’s not so much about a simple debt to be paid; it’s more about power and control. It’s about remaining untouchable by corrupting everyone involved to the point that one person’s vendetta becomes a whole family’s battle regardless of personal beliefs or feelings.

Winters has weaved a truly remarkable tale throughout the course of this series. The environment she created as well as the depth of the two families’ history and the varying personalities of the characters is writing at its finest. Every question I had was answered; every twist was unexpected and necessary to move the story forward and to reach the required outcomes. I am absolutely in awe of Winters’ ability to dive into the darkness and manipulate it the way she does in order to bring readers a captivating and mind boggling story of corruption, betrayal, and loss as well as love, redemption, and sacrifice. I love that Jethro and Nila’s tale is so much more than good vs. evil because nothing is ever as clear cut as that idea and by illustrating the multiple dimensions of those two concepts and proving that there are always exceptions and complications to them, it serves as a reminder that history doesn’t have to repeat itself and one’s fate/destiny can be changed as long as that person is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure a new future occurs.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt: Final Debt

nila

“READY TO DIE, Nila?”

Cut’s voice physically hurt me as he forced me to my knees. The ballroom splendour mocked me as I bowed unwillingly at the feet of my executioner.

Velvet and hand-stitched crewel on the walls glittered like the diamonds the Hawks smuggled—a direct contrast to the roughly sawn wood and crude craftsmanship of the guillotine dais. No finesse. No pride. Just a raised podium, framework cushioning a large tarnished blade, and a rope dangling to the side.

“Don’t do this. Cut…think about what you’ve become. You can stop this.” My voice mimicked a beg but I’d vowed not to beg. I’d seen things, understood things, and suffered things I never thought I would be able to endure. I refused to cry or grovel. I wouldn’t give him that satisfaction.

“In five minutes, this will all be over, Weaver.” Cut bent to the side and collected a wicker basket.

The wicker basket.

I didn’t want to think about what its contents would be.

He placed it on the other side of the wooden block.

My lungs demanded more oxygen. My brain demanded more time. And my heart…it demanded more hope, more life, more love.

I’m not ready.

Not like this.

“Cut—”

“No. No more talking. Not after everything you’ve done.” Ripping a black hood from his pocket, he didn’t hesitate. No fanfare. No second guesses.

I cried out as the scratchy blackness engulfed my face, tightening by a cord around my throat.

The Weaver Wailer chilled me. The diamond collar that’d seen what I’d seen and whispered with phantoms of my slain family prepared to revoke its claim and detach from around my neck.

This was it.

The Final Debt.

Cut pushed my shoulders forward.

A heavy yoke settled over the top of my spine.

I closed my eyes.

I said goodbye.

I waited to die.

Coincidental Cowgirl by Jillian Neal

Date of Publication: December 1, 2015

Blurb

Born and raised on the sunny shores of Gypsy Beach, Hope Camden is struggling to make sense of life on her husband’s family cattle ranch which is often buried in three feet of snow. She willingly traded in her flip-flops for cowgirl boots, but life on the ranch isn’t quite how she imagined it. Truthfully, she doesn’t understand how anyone survives in a town where the cows vastly outnumber the people, the mailman reads the mail before delivering it, the doctor’s office is in an old mechanic’s shop, and the poodle-grooming beauty shop owner moonlights for the mortuary? Her husband is kind, sweet, and oh so sexy, but the Nebraskan winter may be more than she can withstand.

Born and bred to be a cowboy, Brock Camden is desperate to make Hope love Pleasant Glen as much as he does. There’s nothing better than having his wife in his arms or in his bed. He just has to show her that life on his family’s cattle ranch will be just as magical as their life on Gypsy Beach if she’ll give it a chance.  A shocking twist of fate has both of them clinging tightly to one another, and Brock has to prove that he’ll stand by her side come thick or thin. Will the fiery passion they have between the sheets be enough to keep them burning through the long, cold winter nights?

Excerpt

Much to Hope’s delight, Brock appeared just as she was dipping her plate in the soapy water she’d run in the sink. “Hey, you’re here.” Drying her hands quickly, she raced into his arms. Chuckling, he hugged her to his chest, but she couldn’t access much of him. The hardened planes of his chest and his muscular arms that always made her feel safe were bundled up against the elements. The freezing cold was trapped inside his coat and chaps. It transferred to her as soon as she embraced him, but she didn’t care. She’d endure the cold to be in his arms. There was nothing better.

He set his cowboy hat on the counter. The front hung off the edge, and Hope resisted the urge to scoot it back. Apparently, that damaged the rim and made cowboys unhappy. She’d deciphered that much in the last couple weeks. Maybe with a little more time, she’d figure out more about ranch life since Brock really didn’t have time to teach her. She’d always been a quick learner. She’d figure out ranch life soon; she was determined.

Tugging off his deerskin gloves, Brock brushed a kiss on her cheek. The cold bristle of his slight beard stung her jaw. She shivered until he drew her back in his arms and mated their mouths in an unexpectedly passionate kiss. “God, I miss you.” His hands squeezed her backside and just like every time before, she let her frustrations melt in the heat that emanated between them. “You okay, darlin’?” Concern darkened the golden rims of his eyes.

She angled her head, hungry for more, when he broke the kiss. Avoiding his question, she replied to the first comment, “I miss you, too.” Her tongue stroked hers, coaxing her, tasting her mouth. A shiver that had nothing to do with the weather quaked through her body.

After earning a degree in education, she discovered that her passion could never be housed inside a classroom. A vehement lover of love and having maintained a lifelong affair with the awe-inspiring power of words, she set to turn the romance industry on its head. Her overly-caffeinated, troupe-spinning muse is never happy with the standard formula story. She believes every book should be brimming with passion, loaded with hot sexy scenes, packed with a gut-punch of emotion, and have characters that leap off the page and right into your heart.

Her first series, The Gifted Realm, defines contemporary romance with a fantasy twist. Her Gypsy Beach series will leave you longing to visit the sultry shores of the tiny bohemian beach town, and her erotic romance series, Camden Ranch, will make you certain there is nothing better than a cowboy with some chaps and a plan. The sheer amount of coffee required to keep all of those characters dancing in her head would border on lethal, so she unleashes their engaging stories on page after page of spellbinding reads.

Jillian lives outside of Atlanta with her own sexy sweetheart, their teenage sons, and enough stiletto heels, cowgirl boots, and flip-flops to exist in any of the fictional worlds she brings to life.

Brandon: I’d kill for her. I want to see the bastard who murdered her mother burn in hell. No other woman has made me feel so much. My heart aches for her more than my cock does. I want her to be mine. I want to own every ounce of her body and her soul. But I’m trapped by another who’s holding a gun to my balls

Unexpected events and a fluffy little dog bring the twosome closer to their destiny, but an evil force threatens to end their journey. Fate’s a bitch, right?

Review

If only Brandon could make his sensual dreams his reality instead of the messed up situation that he finds himself in – pining for his assistant and dealing with an out of control fiancee who’s hellbent on spending as much of Brandon’s money as she can and basically leading him around by his balls because the manipulative bitch knows just what to do to ensure that he doesn’t get what he wants no matter the cost or the amount of broken hearts.

In Unforgettable 2, about the only thing that seems to be going right in Brandon’s life is his career – the words are flowing, and his acting is truly inspired, but his real life is a jumbled mess. He has to contend with an agent he doesn’t really trust and a fiancee who does nothing for him sexually or otherwise. On top of that, he has an assistant who soothes his soul and makes him yearn for things he can only seem to dream about, which is forcing him to figure out how to get himself out of the situation he’s in without ruining his career or facing off with a woman who’s determined to have her man exactly where she wants him – under her thumb.

Zoey is definitely Brandon’s perfect match but regardless of how much they crave each other, happily ever after doesn’t seem to be their reality because everything is too complicated and there’s too many variables going against them, so when their story does fade to black, it’s unclear if Zoey and Brandon will only be together in their fantasies or if a dramatic plot twist will allow them to be together. It’s all about to Nelle L’Amour and from what I already know about her writing and dramatic endings, Zoey and Brandon are going to have to work rewrite their story!

I take another hit of the Campari cocktail. “Have you ever gone swimming in the Mediterranean?”

He smiles. “Dozens of times. The water is incredible. If we have time, I want to take you swimming.”

A frisson of anxiety curls in my gut. Not only am I afraid of swimming in the sea, but I also sure as hell don’t want Brandon to see me in a bathing suit again.

“I don’t think so. You know, I’m still afraid of the ocean.”

He laughs. “The Mediterranean isn’t an ocean. It’s a sea. And technically, the part here in Cannes is a bay. So, the water is very calm. Barely a wave.”

“B-but I didn’t bring a bathing suit.” The truth. I never even thought of bringing one since I packed so hastily.

He laughs again and unnerves me. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll buy you a bikini.”

I gulp. A bikini—the last thing I want to be caught dead in! Especially with Brandon. As I envision the worst, he continues.

“There’s probably a boutique right in the hotel.” He regards me coyly. “You may only need a bottom. Most women here sun and swim topless.”

I gulp again. The ring of Brandon’s phone saves me from responding. Thank God, because I’m at a loss for words.

My eyes stay on him as he pulls out his cell from his jeans pocket and glances down at the caller ID. His lips twist and his brows furrow. Katrina? The phone continues to ring while I anxiously circle the rim of my glass with my fingertip. To my relief, he doesn’t answer it, and, in fact, turns it off. “Fuck it,” he mumbles under his breath. His frown morphs into a smile when Antoine personally brings us our meal along with the bottle of wine.

“Bon appetit,” says the jovial man, setting our order down.

The tantalizing, garlicky aroma of the mussels wafts up my nose. My appetite is aroused.

“Antoine makes the best mussels meuniere in all of the Riviera,” Brandon tells me.

Antoine smiles proudly. He uncorks the wine and pours Brandon a bit. Brandon takes a sip and nods approvingly. “C’est parfait.”

It’s perfect. He’s perfect. We share the big bowl of mussels and the crispy fries, sensuously feeding helpings to one another and imbibing the refreshing pink wine between bites. Moans escape my mouth. Not only are the mussels divine, but their tender meat is also charging me with sexual energy. Mussels must be some kind of aphrodisiac. But actually, everything is turning me on. The food, the wine, the setting. And most of all, the mouth-watering man sitting across from me. My eyes don’t waver from him as I feed him the last mussel. His luscious lips clamp down on the edible part and then he sucks on it.

“Mmm,” he moans, closing his eyes as he does. Every ounce of me is buzzing and there’s a wet fire inside my panties. He swallows and licks his upper lip. Another gush of wetness and a rush of hot tingles besiege me. He re-opens his eyes and meets my gaze, holding it fiercely. Before either of us can say word, a staunch, swarthy woman appears on the terrace. Holding an accordion, she heads our way. Once at our table, she stretches out the instrument and starts to serenade us.

Inoubliable…”

Oh my God! In one word, the song is instantly recognizable. “Unforgettable.” Mama’s favorite song…sung in French. With the husky voice of a fallen angel, the songstress’s moving rendition pulls at my heartstrings. Tears flood my eyes.

“Why are you crying?” Brandon asks, tenderly brushing my unstoppable tears away.

“This was Mama’s favorite song. She sang it all the time. It reminded her of Papa.” Sniffling, I pause while the dark memory fills my head. “It was playing on the Pier when she was shot.”

“I’m sorry. It’s a beautiful song,” he says softly, cutting into the painful, unforgettable memory. His violet eyes burn right through me and his voice grows softer. “Almost as beautiful as you.”

My watering eyes blink several times while my breath hitches in my throat and my heart hammers against my chest. His words swirl around in my head like confetti. They shower my flesh with flecks of heightened sensation and my soul with explosive emotion. I begin to unravel.

And then he does something that totally turns me into vapor. Tracing my tear-soaked jaw, Brandon sings along in English, his voice pure velvet, as devastating as the man he is

“Oh, Brandon!” I weep out his name. The impact of this magical moment has reduced to me to mush.

Still singing and melting my heart, my gorgeous god of a man stands up, and rounding the table, pulls out my chair. “Dance with me, Zoey.” A soft but strong command.

On my next sniffle, I’m in his strong arms, my head resting on his beating heart, my arms draped around his shoulders, as he moves me slowly to the melody and words. Swaying me side to side, he sings into my ear while tears stream down my face and dampen his linen shirt. I lose myself in him with each slow measured step. It’s as if there is no one else in the world but the two of us. Unforgettable…as the word drifts into a hypnotic hum, he draws me closer to him, pressing his lips on my scalp. I feel the warmth of them and his taut body flush against mine. I melt into his ripples and his arousal. He owns me and I don’t have the strength or desire to break away. Physically or mentally.

I’m drunk with emotion. And one forbidden four-letter word. So intoxicated, I can’t think straight or question what I’m doing. I just cling to him. Like a song of love. Finally, I lift my head, and look up at him, my bleary eyes searching for answers. His impassioned gaze holds me captive. My already racing pulse accelerates.

“Brandon—” I don’t know what words will spill out of my mouth next, if any at all. It doesn’t matter. Because on my next heartbeat, he fists my hair and tugs back my head. Before I can take another breath, his lips come crashing down on mine like a meteor. Still humming, he sucks and gnaws my hungry mouth. White-hot balls of passion explode inside me, showering me with fireworks from my head to my toes. I moan into his mouth and then I part my lips, allowing his tongue to find mine. Entwined, our tongues dance sensuously, swirling and twirling to the music and lyrics. Oh my God. This kiss! This incredible kiss! I cup his strong, stubbled jaw, deepening, and extending it, as he draws me closer, one hand gripping my ass. The song drifts into my ears like a magic carpet. The sparks now blind me. I squeeze my eyes shut. Yet, he’s all I see. Never before has anyone been so unforgettable in every way. After what seems like an eternity, the timeless song ends, and he gently breaks his lips away. My heavy eyelids rise like theater curtains, and our glazed eyes lock in a passionate exchange. Shouts of “bravo” from patrons and bystanders reverberate in my ears. I feel myself flush with embarrassment, but Brandon’s dimpled smile fills me with a rush of lust and desire as he holds me tight in his arms.

Tears flow from my eyes. Everything’s been so perfect. The setting. The meal. Our dance. Our kiss. But something is so wrong with this picture. A blaring ambulance races by. The sound of the siren startles me back to my senses, out of my drunken stupor. Brandon’s name burns on my heart. Remorse singes my brain. I want to rip that dazzling smile off his face. What the hell is he doing? What the hell am I doing? He belongs to another. As reality sets in, so does a bitter mix of panic and regret.

Oblivious, Brandon kisses my tears away and then breathes against my neck. “Baby, let’s make this night unforgettable.”

Blurb

When Ronan Sharpe unexpectedly left Colorado for parts unknown, he took a piece of Keely Carmichael’s heart with him.

After leaving his hellish roots behind him, Ronan found contentment when he started over. Thoughts of the past had been pushed down for so long; he hardly thought about it at all.

He intended to keep it that way.

When unexpected circumstances force Ronan to return to Colorado, the Keely he finds is no longer the adolescent girl he remembered. Torn between desire and fear, Ronan struggles with his feelings for Keely and his need to escape the town that scarred him so deeply years ago.

Letting go is all Ronan’s ever known. Will he realize a life with Keely is something he should hold onto at any cost?

all that's left to hold on to teaser 4

Review

People are shaped and molded by their pasts and how they’re treated by those who are supposed to love and care for them. With the way Ronan and Keely were treated by their so called loved ones, it would have been easy for them both to go down reckless paths, but  neither did – Ronan didn’t because he left his past behind to find a future that didn’t include destructive people, and Keely is just too good of a person to allow it to destroy her, even though at times it felt like she would succumb to pain and neglect.

Now, Ronan and Keely are blessed with a gift from their siblings that they’re meant to protect and care for, and they’ll do whatever it takes to ensure Emma has the best possible life with two people who love her unconditionally and vow to give her the family she needs.

This new life that is paved for Ronan and Keely may be nothing like they anticipated, but it’s a chance for them to prove they are so much more than a product of their environment, and they’re going to make it work not only for Emma but for themselves because there’s something between them that can’t be denied; it was there 5 years ago, and it’s only amplified when Ronan finally sees the woman Keely has become.

The past is not something either Ronan or Keely want to remember, but it’s also hard to completely let go of, but this story demonstrates the need to do just that because if they stay locked in the past, they’ll miss out on a bright future with one another and their beautiful baby girl.

All That’s Left to Hold is a great reminder about what’s important in life…what’s necessary to live a good life…what’s needed to remember what’s worth the risk and pain and what is not. Ronan and Keely’s lives have never been that easy, but together, they can ensure that Emma’s life is filled with enough love and good memories to make even the hardest days easier.

4.5 Poison Apples

all that's left to hold onto teaser 6

Prologue

There were nasty looking bruises on his cheek and jaw, his lip was swollen and his knuckles were scraped and bloody.  The instant I got a good look at his face I knew something was horribly wrong.  It only went downhill from there.

My attempts to contain my panic weren’t working.  Choking back a sob I blubbered, “Why do you have to go?”

The anger was all but pouring off of him.  Not toward me—he’d never once been angry with me. I knew anger though, and it was more than obvious he was furious about something. A permanent grimace seemed to have set up camp on his face.  For him, it was highly unusual.  Even in the toughest of times, he kept his cool.

Suddenly, he wasn’t calm at all.  He was angrier than I’d ever seen him.  It was obvious he’d been in a fight, but it didn’t change his status as the most attractive guy alive, in my opinion.

I saw his jaw clenching and unclenching which I figured meant he was trying to control himself.

“Because this piece of shit town is like a fucking cancer,” he spat.  “I’m so done with the crazy assholes around here. People like us aren’t normal—we’re the freaks for trying to be good people.”

I didn’t know how to argue with his words.  He wasn’t wrong—there was a lot wrong with many of the people in our town. Most of the crazy people were either my family members or his.  I knew it and so did he.  There wasn’t a response to erase the reality of the kind of people we dealt with.

“Are you going alone?”

His hands clenched into fists at his sides as he nodded stiffly. “Yes.”

“Even though you live with—”

His hand shot up into a stop gesture to keep me from finishing the sentence.

“Don’t say her fucking name. If I never hear it again, it’ll be too soon. I don’t live with that crazy bitch anymore.”

I couldn’t stand her so it wasn’t like I was going to push. She was an evil troll. If he had to go, I was glad he wasn’t taking her with him.  It would’ve made me ill. She pretended to be sweetness and light when he was around but it was nothing but a charade.  She was terrible.  I was glad he wasn’t taking her, but the fact he wouldn’t say her name told me his leaving was somehow her responsibility. I hated her more than ever.

“Where will you go?”

He gestured back over his shoulder toward the street with his thumb.

“Wherever my car takes me once I pull out,” he said.

I couldn’t imagine life without him, nor did I want to. Not only had he been my crush for as long as I could remember, he was the only person who ever really listened to me.

“Will you ever visit?” I asked hopefully.

He was shaking his head in the negative before I’d even fully finished asking the question. I knew he wouldn’t. The bone-deep hatred he had for everything about where we lived was stamped all over his face.  I wanted so badly to know what, exactly, had sent him over the edge, but when I asked, he’d refused to tell me.

It sucked being fourteen because he treated me like a kid.  My age said I was a child, but I was so different than any of my peers it wasn’t even funny.  Because of this, they teased me often, referring to me as Granny Carmichael.  I hated it.  It wasn’t as though I’d had a choice.  My childhood was over the moment my mother got sick.

His expression softened when he looked me over. “You need to get back inside before you get pneumonia.”

The frigid Colorado air wasn’t even making an impression on me until he pointed it out. I realized my tears were leaving cold trails on my face, but I couldn’t walk away. All I cared about was how much I didn’t want him to leave.

“I don’t care about the cold or getting pneumonia.  I don’t want you to go!” I cried anxiously.

He hugged me then, his strong arms wrapping around me to give comfort.  I hadn’t hugged him since I’d been much younger—probably five or six.  Those hugs had mostly involved me wrapping myself around one of his legs.  This was different. I wrapped my arms tight around him and cried against his chest, holding on for as long as he allowed me to.

“I’m sorry,” he said as he ended the embrace and stepped back. “I have to leave.”

Knowing my denial and resistance weren’t going to make any difference, I swiped at my tears as I nodded.

“I’ll miss you,” I said on a choked sob.  “Take care of yourself.”

“I’ll miss you too,” he replied softly.  “You’re one of the few good people here.”

My heart galloped in my chest. I loved him for saying what he did—but hated that it came at such a horrible price.  Losing him was unbearable.

He turned as if to leave, then stopped.  Spinning back my way, he stared at me intently for a few moments before he spoke again.

“You’re so much better than any of these people. Don’t ever let them change who you are. The world needs a lot more you and a lot less them. No matter what anyone tells you—you’re perfect.  Got it?”

I nodded as I wiped at the tears running unchecked down my face.

He hugged me again, very briefly. My heart skipped a few beats when he dropped a kiss on top of my head.

“Don’t ever forget your worth—not even for a minute,” he murmured.

When he let go, he said nothing else.  He just turned and walked to his car.  As he went, the chill in the air suddenly took hold of me.  Hugging my arms around myself, I watched as he got into the car, turned it on and then pulled out of my driveway.  He looked at me one last time before putting his hand up in a goodbye gesture.  I did the same.  A few seconds passed before he put the car in drive then sped off into the night.

I stayed outside for two or three minutes, hoping against hope he would change his mind and come back.

He didn’t.

Hours later when I got into bed, I prayed fate would bring him back one day.  I said the same prayer most nights for a long, long time. Eventually I had no choice but to accept reality.

Hell would freeze over before he returned.

Former tennis player Easton Bradbury is trying to be the best teacher she can be, trying to reach her bored students and trying to forget her past. What brought her to this stage in her life isn’t important. She can’t let it be. But now one parent-teacher meeting may be her undoing…

Meeting Tyler Marek for the first time makes it easy for Easton to see why his son is having trouble in school. The man knows how to manage businesses and wealth, not a teenage boy. Wanting him is taboo. Needing him is undeniable. And his long-awaited touch will weaken Easton’s resolve—and reveal what should stay hidden…

Review

Misconduct is an amazing story that is about so much more than a forbidden love affair between a teacher and a student’s parent. It’s about deciding between wants versus needs; it’s about struggling for control in an environment that can suck you in and spit you out. It’s about putting the important people/things first and ensuring that they stay there regardless of the different directions you’re pulled. It’s about feeling safe; it’s about speaking your mind and fighting for yourself.

There are so many layers to the story line and the characters that I couldn’t read fast enough; I needed to understand Easton and Tyler’s state of mind and the reasons they were so driven, sacrificing quite a bit to achieve their goals, especially Tyler. As the story continues and builds, Easton and Tyler grow as individuals and begin to question many things, ultimately not finding the answers until they dig deep and realize what they need to be happy.

Both characters have dual identities – one used in public and one used in private and while in order for their liaisons to stay private, they need to watch their actions and body language, the pull that they feel towards each other is not easily hidden because it’s more than their bodies that they crave – it’s how they make each other feel and what they offer to one another outside of the bedroom as well.

Regardless of their age difference and the forbidden aspect of their relationship, Easton and Tyler risk their careers, their ambitions, and those they love in order to continue their relationship and even though it’s a matter of when not if their misconduct is made public, they need to decide what’s most important to them and what they’re willing to lose to remain together.

Penelope Douglas continues to mesmerize readers with her versatility as a storyteller and her creation of multifaceted characters. Despite knowing the difference between right and wrong, Douglas makes us question why a relationship like the one Easton and Tyler share is inappropriate when it seems to be one that frees them more than confines them. Why can’t they be both Easton and Ms. Bradbury and Tyler and Mr. Marek? Who does it hurt? What do they gain except each other? In terms of the black and white of life, I understand the misconduct at play but because life is messy and mostly grey, it would seem there are more dangerous relationships.

5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

“Good morning. Tyler Marek’s office,” a woman’s pleasant voice chirped. “How can I help you?”

My heart pounded in my ears, and I could feel the pulse in my neck throb. I held back, almost wishing he wasn’t in his office after all.

I needed time to calm down.

But I swallowed and pushed forward anyway. “Yes, hello,” I rushed out.

“Easton, keep your cool,” I heard my brother warn from my side.

I bit my lip to keep the anger out of my voice. “I’m Easton Bradbury calling for Mr. Marek,” I told her. “I’m sure he’s not in today, but—”

“Just a moment, please,” she interrupted, and disappeared.

I sucked in a breath, realizing that he was in after all.

“Marek?” my brother asked. “Tyler Marek?”

I glanced at him, arching an eyebrow in annoyance.

“Easton, get off the call,” Jack ordered.

His arm shot out, trying to grab the phone, but I slapped his hand away.

“Watch the road!” I barked, pointing at the street ahead.

“Easton, I’m serious,” he growled. “Tyler Marek has a workforce of more than ten thousand people. He may be a senator, for crying out loud. It isn’t your place to argue with him.”

I shot him a look. My place?

My brother was worried about his career, but I didn’t care who Marek was. He was still a man.

Nothing but a man.

“Ms. Bradbury.”

I turned my head away from my brother, suddenly hearing Marek’s voice in my ear.

Thick anticipation filled my chest, and I dropped my eyes, disappointed that I was actually excited.

“Mr. Marek,” I replied curtly, remembering why I had called. “I received your e-mail, and I’d love to . . .” I trailed off, wiping the sweat off my hairline. “I’d love to schedule a meeting to sit down and work out a plan for Christian.”

“We’ve already met,” he pointed out, his voice clipped. “And it was not a productive use of my time, Ms. Bradbury.”

I tried reasoning. “Mr. Marek, we both want what’s best for your son. If we work together—”

“Ms. Bradbury.” He cut me off, and I could hear people talking in the background. “Apparently I wasn’t clear enough in my e-mail, so let me save us both some time. My son has no problems with any other teacher, so it goes without saying that you’re the problem.” His stern voice cut me, and I felt like shrinking. “You suffer from an overindulged sense of entitlement, and you forget that your job is on a yearly contract.”

My eyes widened, taking in his threat that my job this year could belong to someone else next year. I fisted the hem of the skirt at my thigh.

“Now, I’m a busy man,” he continued, sounding condescending, “and I don’t have time for silly young women who don’t know their place.”

My skin stung from where my fingernail dug in. His son didn’t have problems with me. Perhaps I graded harder than other teachers, and I might have had unorthodox methods, but most of the students enjoyed my class, including Christian. When he participated. If he ever challenged me, it was because his father wouldn’t allow him the freedom to have the tools to participate like all the other students.

“Now, can I get on with my day and consider this issue settled?” he sniped.

Heat spread over my skin, and I bared my teeth. “You can go to hell,” I shot back, raging. “No wonder he can’t stand you.”

“Easton!” Jack burst out next me.

But it was too late. My eyes widened, and my hand tingled, nearly losing grip on the phone.

What the hell did I just say?
