No female can prepare for or contend with a Mayson male when he has his sights set on them and who would want to? Even though Ellie doesn’t know how to deal with Jax and his persisting, claiming ways, it doesn’t mean she’s adverse to them; she just doesn’t know how to handle his advances because she hasn’t led that kind of life. Ellie’s in a complicated situation because there are things she hasn’t shared with Jax…things that could completely change his view of her, and she doesn’t feel ready to expose those secrets because in her mind, Jax is still a wildcard due to his past with women.

Jax is an amazing hero; the way he steps up for both Ellie and Hope is swoon worthy. Through his words and his actions, Jax proves how much he wants Ellie to be his and the steps he’s willing to take to make her believe that what he feels and what they could have are real. Jax is a Mayson, so it goes without saying that he’s had his share of women but just like his father and uncles, he knows when he first sets his eyes on Ellie that she’s the only one for him, and he goes about making sure everyone around them understands that as well.

“Thank you again for taking me.” Pulling my eyes from the road for a brief moment, I look at Ellie. Her head is resting against the window, her legs pulled up onto the seat, tucked near her ass, and her arms are wrapped tight around them. One thing I’ve noticed about her over the last few hours is she’s always wrapping her arms around herself or tucking her body into a tight ball. It’s like she’s forcing herself to stay together.

“I told you I got you, baby,” I say gently, wanting more than anything to take her hand in mine, but every time I touch her, she freezes up like she’s waiting for me to strike out at her, and I would be lying if I said that didn’t piss me the fuck off. It does; it feels like a slap in the face every time it happens.

“I know,” she whispers, and the tears I hear in her voice cause a sharp pain in my chest.

Fuck.

“This is the turnoff.” Her feet go to the floorboard and her hands to the dash as she sits up taller, moving her face closer to the windshield. We drive up a long dirt driveway with forest and the occasional broken down car on each side. When we make it to the top of the hill, a singlewide trailer comes into view, with junk cars and garbage piled up out front.

As soon as I come to a stop, she opens her door and hops out before I can tell her to keep her little ass in the cab. I don’t even know how I’m going to deal with the range of emotions that have settled over me since seeing her for the first time.

“Fucking Boom,” I mutter, getting out behind her and doubling my steps until I’m able to reach her side, where I wrap my hand around her waist and pull her closer to me. She’s so fucking tiny that the top of her dark head sits right at my chest. So fragile, from her too soft skin to her petite size. And she’s mine.

“When he comes over please don’t say anything stupid or act funny around him. Please. I’m begging you. He’s just a normal guy like you and me,” Anna pleaded, wide eyed.

At the mention of the ‘normal guy,’ Anna couldn’t help but notice the wide, suspicious eyes staring back at her. It was obvious that her comments had had the exact opposite effect than the one she’d been after. Instead of acting natural and normal, now Anna was worried what would fall out of their mouths. And what confused her more was why. After all, they’d all known each other for years, but now and all of a sudden Anna didn’t trust them. Not as far as she could throw them.

But in the same moment the thought crossed her mind, James edged his way around the bar toward them. Daniel was first to see and recognise him. The Secret’s Out is another great biker book from Lila Rose! It’s a bit different from her other MC reads, which isn’t a bad thing, and it actually fits the dynamic of the story quite well. The pace was a bit slower, but that part  also makes sense due to Josie’s need to go slow and Pick and Eli understanding that fact and doing everything in their power to put her mind at ease while still showing her how much they love her and want her to be theirs.

A relationship with two people with dark pasts and haunting demons is bad enough, but when you throw another person in the mix, one who may not have had as horrendous a past as the other two, but doesn’t truly know the feeling of love, complications will arise and complex feelings will have to be dealt with in a way that doesn’t alienate any of them.

What I find most interesting about the dynamics between Josie, Pick, and Eli is that it actually seems like the only way a relationship will work between them is if it’s all three of them – only two doesn’t work because there’s too much darkness that could consume them; the right amount of light and feeling of home can only be provided in a triad relationship and Lila Rose does a great job of illustrating that fact throughout the course of the text.

Josie Alexander is an interesting heroine; she may not be as confident or have a backbone like Rose’s typical heroines, but the way she is able to survive and live on her own for so long dealing with the horrors of her past and the torment of her present proves how much of a fighter Josie is. And even though Josie didn’t have to go it alone, I give her credit for wanting to prove to herself that she could.

Pick and Eli – it’s amazing how effortless it is for them to give Josie everything she needs not asking for anything in return. By having Josie’s back together even when they thought there was no way for either one of them to have her as theirs is a testament to the type of men they are, despite the abuse Pick went through as a child and the loveless childhood that Eli had. I do wish the relationship/feelings between Pick and Eli was explored more; they had a few encounters and comments about how they felt for one another, but I wanted to feel their connection more…understand what it is that they gave one another without Josie in the middle.

Regardless of my desire for a bit more from Rose’s alpha men, The Secret’s Out is a great spinoff of Rose’s Hawks MC Club series, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for more of her tough and tortured heroes and kickass heroines.

I was born in Brisbane, Australia. My step-dad was in the Army, which caused us to move around a lot. We finally settled in country Victoria, Australia. I am the youngest of four children and I can say that I was spoilt a bit. I drove my mum crazy when I refused to eat meat at a young age. Now I live with my husband and two children, and I find myself regretting all the troubles I put my parents through because my monsters are just as picky as I was.
