Don’t judge me. I know you want to, but let’s get some facts straight in my defense.

1. I love Arturo King

2. Arturo left me behind.

3. I was lonely.

4. Lansing was an old friend.

5. I love Arturo King.

Did you burn the fictional damsel in distress that cuddled and kissed her best friend when her fantastical boyfriend disappeared for months? No, you didn’t. You sympathized with her loneliness before you read ahead to make sure the boyfriend was coming back to her. Loneliness is not a crime. It’s cruel to be alone, but not a crime, the last I knew. If it is a crime, I’ll light the match to ignite myself for what I’ve done. Goodness knows, I’m burning up with guilt as it is. In my defense, I want my story to be told before I’m judged too harshly. Arturo King might be a rock legend, but he and I are human. We make mistakes. We made mistakes. Do we need to suffer for all of eternity because of them? I hope not. The jury still seems to be out, though. The greater question is: Is it possible to rekindle our love, when the past could burn us all?

Review

I was so happy to be back in L.B. Dunbar’s meticulously crafted rocker world. Throughout all of the other bandmates’ stories, readers have been kept apprised of Arturo’s sparse interactions with his friends and Guinevere’s poor decisions and heartbreaking self torture, but both of those have occurred through other people’s perspectives, not their own. In The Trials of Guinevere DeGrance, readers get what they’ve impatiently been waiting for – the fallout of Guinie’s lonely discretion and the reasons behind Arturo’s chosen absence. Arturo and Guinie’s relationship wasn’t a slow burn – it was fast paced and their emotions and their bodies were tangled up in each other right from the start, and for this reason, both are hesitant to completely let go of one another and the passion they share, but they also don’t know how to get past the time, secrets, and heartbreak that lies between them. There’s no question that they love each other, but sometimes when there are so many other factors going against a relationship, love is not enough, especially when there is a lack of trust and a plethora of anger.

Guinie’s emotional torment resonates off of the pages as does Arturo’s, but his is more subdued because he doesn’t know all that he has lost. When all of the secrets are exposed, both suffer immensely and Dunbar does a fantastic job of showing their distress and proving that it will take time and communication in order to repair what both of them have broken with their bad decisions.

I’ve hated Ana from the beginning and that is only reinforced in this story, which means L.B. Dunbar created quite the stellar female antagonistI I’m not sure what to think about Morte…there’s so much anger within him, which is going to be difficult to be rid of until he gets help and his parents figure out a way to give him the love and care he desperately needs and craves.

The other couples are a big part of The Trials of Guinevere DeGrance; Guinie gets support from an unlikely ally, which makes all of the difference in her decisions. Perkins will always be my favorite and he continues to be a calm presence in the story for everyone around him.

The ending was perfect because there was too much turmoil at the end…too many variables to consider for there to be a complete Happily Ever After. Don’t get me wrong, Dunbar does a great job of leaving everyone in a good place, but there’s no 5 years later, etc., which is perfect in my view because the band nor Guinie and Arturo truly knows what the future holds.

Prologue

Guinevere

If I ever wondered what the pits of hell felt like, I sensed my current position was similar to being in the fiery depths. The orange-yellow glow danced before me; blinding me to the man I knew was on the other side of the flames. His face was melting, fading in the fumes that surrounded and flowed from the heat. I sensed the wooden walls of the barn structure were crackling and eventually would crumble, but I continued to stand as if frozen. There would be no chance to freeze under the circumstances. If anything, I should be melting slowly to form a puddle on the floor. My skin felt as if it would peel off of me, one droplet of sweat at a time.

The blaze started in an attempt to gain Arturo’s attention. The boy wanted to impress his father: a rock god who stubbornly ignored his son, as he had done over a year ago in this same barn. The Barn. The place of inspiration for Arturo King and his band, The Nights. The place where they performed their magic through music. The place that marked where history was made.

I continued to stare through the flames that separated us. I could see that his lips were moving; calling or shouting out to me, but I couldn’t hear over the roar of the fire. His face was warped in my vision, drifting with the bright light that framed his head filled with dark waves and a jaw covered thicker than before. His brown eyes looked black as they stared back at me. I was trapped. The flames formed a wall between me and my beloved; a man I loved more than anyone. A man who I hurt more than I ever intended. A man who hurt me with his mysterious disappearance and lack of communication.

I didn’t move. Allowing the heat to consume me, I decided this might be my fate. Death by fire was how the adulteress was punished in ancient times. Of course, in romance novels a hero comes to the aid of the persecuted. My mind flashed to another man. He had been a hero to a little girl trapped within a burning building. He had been my hero, as well, when I was kidnapped in a drugged induced haze. He was someone I should not have been thinking of.

I continued to watch the movement of Arturo’s mouth. The roar of the flames was all that I heard. It made music to my ears, drowning out the accusations.

How could I do it? How could I be with another man?

The world seemed to stop as I struggled to give my answers. In contrast, it came alive in an orange glow that spread rapidly along the old wooden floor. My back was now against the warmth of the stones behind me. It was almost like I imagined a brick oven would feel. The ancient fieldstones were absorbing the heat and reflecting it back within the cramped space. Wood crackled above my head. The ripping sound only assured me that my end was eminent. The walls were catching and the barn was doomed to collapse.

Suddenly, I heard my name. The voice that screamed to me was clear, familiar, and not the voice that should have called for me.

“Guinie, turn around and reach up your hand,” he shouted down to me. It was like an angel spoke to me from the heavens. I couldn’t break my gaze on Arturo, but he was gesturing above me. His expression showed he clearly recognized who was over me, who was calling me. His eyes found mine through the flames and he nodded once. Then he looked away and I quickly spun reaching upward blindly. My eyes were dry, boiled orbs within their sockets. The smoke so thick, I confused it for fog. Stretching, my fingers connected with those reaching down for me. One hand was clasped, the opposite wrist encircled, and up I went into the freshness of the cool summer afternoon air. The scent of pine and lake water burned my smoke encrusted nose and I gasped for more oxygen. It was like I’d been drowning. A brief sensation I’d had a year ago in the water of that lake below.

My mind was clouded, but a passing image flashed of Arturo and me spinning in the blue water. He’d kissed me for the first time on that day then rolled us off the boat into the water in distraction. We were playful then. Not today. I heard his voice ringing in my head; his words enflamed with his bitterness.

How could I do it? Didn’t I love him?

I balanced on hands and knees in the dry earth near the burning barn. My throat was hoarse from gassy fumes and screams. I called out his name one more time, and then the inevitable happened. The wooden structure collapsed.

Author Bio

L.B. Dunbar loves the original legend of King Arthur. Inspired by this classic tale, she pulled over to the side of the road to take notes when it hit her that if King Arthur lived today, he’d be a rock star. A lover of fairy tales, myths, legends, and anything with happily ever after, she loves to read and write contemporary romance. Her Legendary Rock Stars series is complete with the final tale: The Trials fo Guinevere DeGrance, but the story began with The Legend of Arturo King. She also wrote The Sensations Collection, which includes five stand alones based on the five senses in a small town setting near Lake Michigan. Raised on one side of that lake, she grew up in Michigan, but now lives on the other side, in Chicago. Mother to four, wife to the one and only, and teacher to hundreds of former students, she looks forward to sharing more stories in the future.

“SO LET ME get this straight.” Dr. Glover lifted the end of his pen to his lips as his eyes narrowed on Evan over the top of his glasses. “The woman we’ve been discussing over the past few weeks finally shows you that she wants more, and you left her in an emotional heap in her office. Did I get that right?”

Evan stretched his long legs out in front of him. She thinks I fucked a prostitute the day after I left her apartment, so, yeah, that’s about right. Sighing, he leaned back into the worn leather couch. “You left out the part about her being a liar. And not someone I met in the last few weeks. She had an agenda.”

“So did you.”

“And what the hell was that?”

“You wanted to fuck her.”

“Jesus, you get right to the point, don’t you?”

“Well, that’s what you do. Isn’t it?”

I thought it was until I became obsessed with a leggy fucking blonde. Evan glared at the man whose eyes he swore fucking twinkled. “Even if it is, what therapist talks like you do? I’m positive they don’t teach you that in Patient-Client Relations 101.”

“I’ve always been a firm believer in no bullshit. I told you that the day you walked in and tried to lie to me. We aren’t going to make any progress if you don’t trust me and I don’t trust you.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re just—”

“Yes, Evan?”

Evan waved him off. “Nothing. I guess I’m still trying to process the fact that Reagan is that little girl from so long ago. A whole fucking life ago. It’s… I don’t know,” he said, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “It’s disconcerting. She knew me before.”

“And that bothers you.”

“Fuck yes, it bothers me. I was ten years old the last time I saw her. Innocent. And now I’m…this.”

“You’re awfully hard on yourself. I wonder if you’re upset over what you’re saying or over Reagan thinking bad of you.”

And there it was. The truth he didn’t want to admit. Reagan accusing him of being with anyone hours after he’d been with her had infuriated him. Which was ridiculous, because he knew what he was. The demons he’d been trying to fight. Why would she assume anything but the worst? But with that anger came embarrassment and shame. He hated that she’d seen him on that corner. Hated that she’d seen him with Layla. But how the fuck could he ever convince her otherwise? And why would he even want to?

“She’s a liar,” he said.

“And you’re a sex addict. Fantastic pairing.”

About Brooke

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

Flash Point is her debut solo novel, and she is the co-author of the erotic serial, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released on November 11, 2015.

If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find – just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for ten years.

RELEASE BOOST: EXCERPT AND GIVEAWAY: The End Game by Kate McCarthy

Title: The End Game

Author: Kate McCarthy

 Release Date: September 8, 2015

Blurb

“Professional athletes are pillars of their respective communities. They are heroes in the eyes of boys and girls and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents their community.”

The public loves a good scandal. Seeing someone fall from the pinnacle of success makes a great headline. No one knows that better than I do. What started out as a promising career in college football, spiraled into scandal and shame.

But being a hero is easier said then done. Especially when there are those who expected to see the great Brody Madden fail. I craved nothing except being the best—willing to do anything to prove them wrong. But I went too far, and I tried too hard, and it broke me.

“At the time of going to print, Jordan Elliott was unavailable for comment.”

I met Brody Madden in my senior year of college. An Australian native on an international scholarship, I was the female soccer sensation with stars in her eyes and no room for a hotshot wide receiver with a chip on his shoulder.

But a heart bursting with ambition and a driving fire to succeed isn’t made of stone. I became his strength, his obsession, and the greatest love of his life. Only I wasn’t there when he needed me most.

This is a story about love and a game that takes everything. Where the path to glory is paved with sacrifice. Where pressure makes you, or breaks you, and triumph is born in the ashes of failure. Where two people’s end game will change everything.

Excerpt

Shutting the door, I walk up the slight incline behind Brody. He sits down at the top of the crest and pats the grassy spot beside him.

“You didn’t mention this part when you explained our date.”

“I can’t give away all my secrets now, can I?”

The grass is a thick blanket on the ground and when I stretch out flat, the rich, earthy scent of soil sweeps over me. My eyes lift to the sky and that’s when I get it. It’s perfectly clear and millions of stars are scattered diamonds twinkling above us—bright and magical.

“Besides,” Brody adds as he lies down beside me and sweeps out his arm, encompassing all of it. “How do you explain that?”

He’s right. You can’t. “It’s beautiful.”

“Is this what the stars are like for you back home?”

“No. Back home it’s different.”

“Different how?”

Homesickness swamps me. As beautiful as Texas is, it’s not Australia. Somehow the stars are always brighter where you belong. “Because there’s no place like home.”

“You’re wrong.”

I turn my head and stare at Brody. He’s not looking at me. His head is tilted toward the sky, eyes riveted on the beauty above him. My gaze follows the line of his profile. From the curl of his hair to the perfect line of his nose, down to the mouth I want kissing me right this very instant.

“Home’s not a place where you live. It’s a feeling.” His hand nudges my own. An invitation. I twine my fingers with his and he squeezes them lightly. “Whether it’s where you are, like the football field, or who you’re with.” Brody turns his head, looking at me when he says that. It’s comforting because it unites us somehow, like it’s slowly becoming us against the world. “You can be anywhere, Jordan. Home will follow you if you follow your heart.”

My breath hitches from the beautiful simplicity of his words. Before I can talk myself out of it, I roll over and straddle him. My knees hug his hips, and he stares up at me from my seated position. My pulse pounds a heavy beat in the silence. Thump, thump, thump. It’s so loud in my ears I’m sure he can hear it.

“Show me,” I breathe. A gleam lights his dark eyes, and he sucks his lower lip inside his mouth. He knows what I’m asking, but I spell it out anyway. “Show me one of those wicked things.”

In a move that steals the air from my lungs, he takes both my hands and pulls me down against the broad width of his chest. I’m rolled over and underneath him before I can blink. The squirm in my hips is instinctive, the ache between my thighs relentless.

“Careful what you ask for,” Brody says roughly, every exquisite inch of his body pressing down on mine.

“Why?”

His lips curve. “Because when I give it to you, it won’t be enough.”

My fingers trail down the side of his face, grazing the firm jaw, cupping his cheek in my palm. Foreboding swamps me. I’m falling hard into uncharted territory, and all I see is a broken mess at the end. How is this going to end well for either of us?

“You’re an arrogant man, Brody Madden,” I whisper.

He brings his face to mine, so close I see the brilliant gold in his eyes, like flecks of light in the dark. “And you, Jordan Elliott, will be the woman who brings me to my knees,” he whispers against my lips.

“Show me,” I beg on a shaky breath.

Brody’s lashes lower and he presses a kiss to the corner of my mouth. I tilt my chin upwards, inviting more. Rather than take my lips like I ache for him to do, he shifts sideways and begins nipping at my jaw. His breath is a rasp when he reaches my earlobe, taking it between his teeth. A sharp pinch from his bite forces a whimper from my throat.

“More?” he asks, drawing back to look at me.

“Is that even a real question?”

Brody chuckles as I slide my hand up and around his nape, dragging his mouth down to mine. He groans and kisses me gently, once, and then twice.

“Brody,” I whisper, and he kisses me again, forcing my mouth open hard like he can’t hold himself in check anymore. My hair is loose and he fists chunks of it in both hands while his tongue rubs against mine, hot and aggressive. It’s almost too much, and when I jerk away I’m left gasping.

Brody doesn’t pause. He ducks his head to my neck, his tongue tasting its way down. He finds my pulse point and sucks. It’s fierce and my back arches involuntarily. His mouth shifts further down, moving on before he leaves a mark.

Sitting up, he takes the neckline of my dress in both hands. Five dainty buttons hold it together. A single wrench will rip the flimsy fabric in two. He pauses and looks at me, inhaling raggedly. “Jordan … I don’t want to ruin it.”

My brow furrows. I glance to the hands poised on my dress. They’re tense, veins straining under his skin. My head is lost in a fog when my gaze returns to his face. “Ruin my dress?”

Brody groans, a deep sound of regret and frustration. “Us.”

“You don’t want to ruin us?”

He draws his hands away from the neckline of my dress. “No.”

“How would you do that?”

“I don’t know. I just get this feeling I’m going to.” He shifts away, moving off me and rolling to his back. I turn my head. Brody’s gaze is back on the stars. I watch his throat work as he swallows, the pulse in his neck pounding visibly. “All I’ve ever wanted is to be the best. Whatever it takes. I’ll do anything. That’s how I’ll ruin us, Jordan. How can something so sweet survive a sentiment so dark?”

I roll to my side, holding my head in my hand. Cupping his face with the other, I nudge gently until he’s looking at me. “I won’t let you.”

Brody’s voice is urgent, his eyes fierce. “Promise me.”

I can’t shake the apprehension. It’s set in my bones and when I speak it feels like a lie. “I promise.”

But with the explosive secret they’re hiding, will their enemies ever let them live happily ever after?

For six long years I lived on the run, in fear and devastated by loss. That began to change the day I met Liam Stone, who is so much more than his money and power, and even the protection he has offered me. He is passion. He is friendship. He is love and happiness, and the man who made my enemies his own. And now with his help, the secret that drove me into hiding is buried, our enemies contained. Liam and I can finally start our life and put this behind us. The nightmare is over. Unless…it’s not.

Review

“Apart, Liam and I were indeed broken. But together, we are unbroken.”

For six years, Amy has been in hiding, relying on only herself to keep her safe, but now that her brother’s enemies have been taken care of and there’s a plan in place to protect the cylinder, she can now breathe easier and hopefully regain some of the control she lost while on the run.

Unbroken is about facing fears and reaching for and finding that safe place that Amy has only dreamed of, and with Liam Stone by her side, it seems like anything is possible. He works hard to give her all her desires while protecting her, and in return, she helps to put his broken pieces together with hers to have a future filled with love and happiness.

The puzzle doesn’t seem completely solved even at the end of Unbroken, but that works well for me because there are still many variables at play and a close eye needs to be kept on all of them to ensure that Amy, Chad, and Liam are no longer in danger and they can get back to living not just existing.

I’ve loved this series from the beginning, and Lisa Renee Jones gives Amy and Liam exactly what they need at the end, and while it may not be perfect and there Amy still might be afraid at times, she is no longer broken.

Excerpt

“Let’s make more good memories, baby.”

“Yes. Please,” I say, and my words land on his tongue as he kisses me tenderly. His mouth lingers over mine, my body coming alive, and I feel him breathing with me. Sometimes it feels as if he’s the only way I can breathe.

Liam shifts the spell between us to new places, turning me to face the massive four-poster bed that stirs wonderful, intimate memories, and I am most definitely ready to make more. He unzips my skirt and with deft fingers undresses me, removing one of the barriers between us. Slowly. Seductively. Somehow he never touches my skin but I feel him everywhere. My skin tingles the way my backside had when he smacked it. I know he’s teasing me, driving me to a place where there is only this man, this room, and me. I feel the energy shift and know that he’s no longer directly behind me, leaving me naked and untouched. The freedom to be vulnerable with this man, which I don’t dare with anyone else, is sexy in a thrilling way.

“Turn around,” he orders, and the rough, aroused quality of his voice tells me I affect him, too. I like that even when he’s in control, there’s a part of him that I set free.

I face him, finding him close, but not close enough. He shrugs out of his jacket and I’m mesmerized by him, his power, his grace. Every move he makes is controlled. Every action calculated. And I realize something I think I’ve known all along: we are the same. Both damaged. Both shattered in some deep way. Both defending ourselves from future wounds with our self-control.

He tugs his tie off and wraps it around his hand, silently promising me that soon I’ll be at his mercy. It’s not the first time he’s tied me up, and each encounter is different in a good way. Yet tonight feels like the first time—as if we really are starting a new chapter.

During our first encounter, he’d said, “Sometimes having a safe place to give it away is the best way to block everything else out. I’m asking you to let me show you that I’m that safe place.”

And Liam is my safe place.

“Amy.”

His voice commands my attention, and I look up to find I’ve missed the delicious moments leading up to him now being gloriously naked. My gaze lands on the “pi” tattoo on his belly, the 3.14 etched above a row of numbers in an upside-down triangle that is all about the infinite possibilities of life. It’s both thrilling and terrifying at times when I consider them with this man.

“Hold out your hands,” he orders, and it speaks volumes that I no longer hesitate to give myself fully to Liam.

He twists his tie around one of my wrists, and I think of the many ways he has helped me escape my past. But what about his past, which is just as etched in heartache as mine? He doesn’t talk about his mother, not since his sole emotional breakdown. Since then, he’s protected me—but who protects him?

He completes the knot binding my hands and pulls me to him. “And now, you’re mine to please and tease.”

“Yes, I am,” I agree.

About the Author

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Message from Jillian Neal

Hi everyone,

I’m so excited to share the cover of Gypsy Hope with you! I love the way the designer captured Brock and Hope for the cover of their novel. They are a very special couple with a very special story. I promise all of the hot sexiness that always comes with a Gypsy Beach novel, but Brock and Hope’s tale has another element that I think makes their story all the more compelling.

Around the world, 757 million adults over the age of 15 cannot read or write a simple sentence. Thirty-two million American adults cannot read and the illiteracy rates in this country aren’t improving. We know that one in four American children grow up without learning how to read, and that students that don’t read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.

My oldest son was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was eight. Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects the ability to read and comprehend. Forty million American adults are dyslexic and make up a large portion of illiterate Americans. I wanted to give voice to those who struggle with illiteracy, and I’ve partnered with ProLiteracy for the release of Gypsy Hope to help them stamp out this global crisis. ProLiteracy is an organization that works to educate and provide resources to help teach adults to read. For every copy of Gypsy Hope sold, I will donate $1 to ProLiteracy.

If you love to read hot, sexy romance, or know someone who does, consider ordering a copy of Gypsy Hope and know that you’ve done something to help. Share the cover and the story on social media to help us get the word out. We can all do something to help. Working together, we can make a difference in the lives of so many. By simply purchasing a book, we can help ProLiteracy help those who need it most.

Title: Addicted To Sin

Series: Book #1 in the Sinful Pleasures Series

Author: Monica James

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance

Publisher: Bookoture

Release Date: October 8th, 2015

Blurb

Tell me your deepest, darkest secrets. I dare you.

Addiction comes down to one simple, primitive concept. Desire.

My name is Dr. Dixon Matthews, and I’m New York’s finest shrink. For $500 an hour, people tell me their darkest, most sinful secrets.

My own addiction?  Sex. A good f**k really is the best medicine.

I might be certified in solving other people’s problems, but not mine –

I know I’m a lost cause. I don’t do relationships.  I don’t even do the same woman twice.

But that’s all about to change, thanks to two entirely different women who awaken my deepest desires.

Who will I choose?

I know who I should choose, but I never said I was the hero of this story, or even the good guy. And besides, who wants to be good, when it feels so good being bad?

My tale isn’t for the fainthearted. If you’re game, strap yourself in and expect the unexpected.  But don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Excerpt

I pulled up outside of my boyfriend’s house . . . No, he was my fiancé now. I pulled up outside my fiancé’s house and looked down at the ring on my left ring finger. It was a simple yet beautiful engagement ring, but it was fitting. Our love was a simple.

Robert and I had been dating for three years, but we’d been best friends since fifth grade. He moved to our town and we just clicked. Immediately. It didn’t become romantic until the sum- mer before our junior year of high school. He kissed me and asked me if I’d go out with him. It was so sweet and unexpect- ed. I’d dated some, mostly casual dates, but Robert never dated. Anyone.

Maybe he’d always been waiting for me.

We were even more inseparable after that. He was my sup- port system when my sister, Cassie, was banished from our fam- ily. He helped me sneak out of my house when things were real- ly bad and my dad’s temper flared.

He was always there.
He was my constant.
And now he would be my husband.
Normally, Robert was super cautious; he had a one-year plan

all the way through a ten-year plan. He was attending college up in Maryland, yet he came home every other weekend to see me. I assumed if marriage was in our future, an engagement would happen nearer to when we were both done with school.

I was still deciding what to do with my life and taking class- es locally until I figured it out. My parents weren’t happy that I was in my second year of school and still going to community college. But I had no idea what I wanted.

Other than getting out of my house. That was what I wanted more than anything.

When he knelt down and proposed to me on the dock, sur- rounded by pink rose petals, I thought I’d melt. I wasn’t normal- ly the type of girl who liked romantic gestures, but romance was in Robert’s bones. He was always surprising me with flowers or chocolates. He even surprised me by taking me shopping. Most boys didn’t like shopping, but not Robert. He was as into it as I was.I loved him so much. Sometimes, though, it felt as though our love was comfortable . . . simple . . . not vivid. But then I thought of how much I loved him, how he’d always been there for me, how he picked me up after my sister left. That’d be enough.

I climbed out of the car and shut the door. I walked toward his sidewalk and paused for a second. There was a bright red hatchback in his driveway. His parents were out of town this weekend, so it wouldn’t be one of their friends. I shook off my curiosity and hurried toward the door. My parents were thrilled about our engagement and wanted to go to dinner tonight to celebrate.

Okay, my mom was excited and wanted to go to dinner. I hadn’t heard from my dad, which wasn’t unusual. I had tried to get in touch with Robert for the past couple of hours and he didn’t answer, so I decided to stop over after I was ready. I wore my red dress, which was his favorite on me. I had on black heels that made me just a little taller than him, but he didn’t mind.

I opened the front door. I’d been coming here for most of my life and Robert’s parents considered me family. I’d been just walking in forever.

“Robert?” I called, peeking my head around the door. “You here?”

I heard a deep, masculine grunt. My heart pounded, won- dering what was going on. I stepped inside and pushed the door closed behind me. A balled up shirt on the floor caught my eye. My brows furrowed as I walked over and picked up the baby blue polo—the one Robert wore earlier when he proposed. Another article of clothing at the entrance to the hallway caught my eye. A pair of jeans, faded with rips in them.

Definitely not Robert’s. He’d never wear something so trashed.

I picked those jeans up and clutched the two articles of cloth- ing to my chest as if they were a shield.

I had a feeling I’d need it.

As I picked my way down the clothing-littered hallway, I heard a rhythmic creaking. My hands shook and my heart pounded in my throat.

What the fuck was going on?

Robert’s door was cracked open and the noises were defi- nitely coming from there. My stomach turned and rolled and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to discover what was behind that door.

At the same time, I couldn’t stop my feet from propelling me forward, craning my neck to peer through the small opening, clothes still pressed to my heart.

How was it that my heart was already breaking?

“Fuck,” Robert moaned. The word grated me. Robert never swore, at least not with me. He didn’t like it. He thought it was crass. A painful lump formed in my throat.

Whatever was behind this door . . . it was going to change everything. I already felt my life collapsing around me, turning upside down. My stomach was in knots and I felt as though I was about to be sick.

I reached forward, nudging the door open inch by inch. The scene in front of me unfolded slowly.

I couldn’t stop the sob from exploding up my throat.

The thrusting and moving limbs in front of me stopped. Cold. Robert cursed under his breath and scrambled.
