She has the mind and the attitude to do a kickass job on any case, which she definitely illustrates throughout the text, but what I love most about book 2 is that amidst the uncovering of clues and interviewing potential suspects, we get to see a softer side of Noelle – a side she doesn’t want others to see because it goes against her “badass gene.”
Noelle always comes across as a confident, independent woman, but when dealing with a certain Alpha Detective, her temper gets the better of her and the control she tries so hard to hold onto slips when they go head to head.
Drake Nash knows exactly how to get under Noelle’s thick skin, which consistently leaves her in a state of flux, wanting to give in to his demands and also threatening to destroy his manhood. Noelle thinks they’re opposites in every way, but to me, they’re too much alike, which is the stem of their problem and hostility. I love how Emma Hart plays up their attraction for one another as well as their constant state of fury. Drake and Noelle blaze with hatred and passion for one another and that is definitely made clear in every interaction they have, both professionally and personally.
Emma Hart has created a fantastic romantic suspense series with a hero and heroine who keep readers entertained with their banter and chemistry, and a detective storyline that flows seamlessly with the tension and sizzle of Noelle and Drake’s relationship. Readers can play along as the Detective and PI work to solve the case, developing their own theories and uncovering the guilty parties, which actively keeps them engaged from start to finish.
I can’t wait for Noelle and Drake’s next case and their continued relationship in both the private and public sectors.

I choke on my water and thump my fist into my chest. “Excuse me?”
“Dinner. You come-a together?”
Unfortunately, I catch Drake’s eye. He’s grinning at me. Bastard.
“Yes,” he tells Nonna. Double bastard. “We came together.”
“So you-a dating? Noella! You-a dating?” She spins around quickly, the spoon still in her hand. White sauce splatters across the cupboards. “You-a really-a dating?”
“Dating is a strong word,” I hedge, shooting a fuck-you look to Drake over the top of Nonna’s head. “We are…trying not to kill each other every time we see each other.”

“So you-a admit-a it is-a a relationship?”

I purse my lips, but he winks, exaggerating his smile, and I laugh at him. To be fair, Trent and Alison never really got it right until he finally learned how she takes her coffee on a morning before her shifts…and that took him eighteen months. So Drake does have a point there.
“What if one of us didn’t drink coffee? Then what?” I ask, fitting the lid on my cup.
“Let’s be honest here. You’d never be the one to not drink coffee, and if I didn’t drink coffee, I wouldn’t come near you before four in the afternoon. I wouldn’t be brave enough to face you until you were falling asleep.”
“I could so go without coffee,” I argue, grabbing a muffin and shoving it at him. “I’m not that much of a bitch without it.”
“Sweetheart, don’t take this the wrong way, but you can be that much of a bitch with coffee.”
I glance at the clock on my fireplace before I step outside. “Fifteen minutes into the day. I’m going to count myself as the bigger person here and not respond to that asinine comment.”

I’ve never read a book where the heroine is the Domme in the relationship, but let me tell you, if all of them are like Mistress Anne, I’ll gladly read more.
What I loved most about Anne is that everything about her screams independent woman, but there’s also a softer side to her that few know about because she doesn’t willingly expose it. She’s all about control, and she’s ice cold with her emotions or so she wants everyone to think, but beneath the Domme exterior is a woman who has deep feelings for her friends, an affinity against change, and a deep seated need for her father’s approval.
As I read her and Ben’s story, it amazed me how well Anne kept her mask on around everyone. She never came across as a vulnerable woman; she’s hardass to the core and that’s exactly what she wants to be perceived as, but I think it also makes it easier for people to disregard her feelings, never looking beyond the façade and seeing the woman within.
At face value, Ben’s a dominating guard dog who serves and protects with ease. As a former Army Ranger, he understands the control that’s needed to ensure everyone’s safety. But, like Anne, there’s a different kind of man beneath the tough and gruff exterior. A man who fights demons from his time of service and actually likes to give up control and be told what to do because following directions allows him to simply act.
Anne and Ben together doesn’t seem to make sense – a sadist and a vanilla – but looks can be deceiving, and as they explore the connection that’s between them, readers witness both of them changing with every interaction, making them both question if how they’ve been living is what they truly want or if change can actually be a good thing, leading towards something better.
Cherise Sinclair’s Masters of the Shadowlands series continues to be a collection of well written, character driven stories where the sexual encounters illustrate the characters’ personalities and what they need to either help them cope with issues from their past or to allow them to express who they are at their core. The series also allows readers to understand the many facets of the BDSM world and get a taste of the different kinds of relationships, play situations, and scenes that are involved in this sensual environment.
Servicing the Target is a great storyline that allows Anne and Ben to show multiple sides of their personalities and prove to readers that there’s definitely more to what people want and need than their outward façade portrays. What I also love about the book/series is that there are always follow-up scenes that allow readers to catch up with past couples and see how their futures are working out. Z and Jessica will always be my favorite couple and to see their love grow during Anne and Ben’s story made it that much better.

Zachary studied the man sitting across from him. Muscles slightly tensed, eyes level but wary, face blanked of expression. Protective posture. Protective thoughts. For Anne.
Of course.
Benjamin had grown up on New York streets, caring for his mother and sisters. He’d joined the U.S. Army to protect his country and moved into the Rangers to do an even better job. Anne might be the Dominant, but this soldier operated under his own priorities.
Zachary did the same.
“Should I sign you up for membership in the club?” he asked in a flanking maneuver.
“Sh*t.” Benjamin choked on his beer and coughed. “Ah, no. That’d be like pulling the trigger before aiming.”
“I see.” What he could also see wasthat Benjamin had, indeed, enjoyed the session and wanted more.
As the Domme, Anne had the next move. She’d apparently not made one.
These weren’t two people he’d have predicted to be a good match, but their scene on Saturday had held tremendous energy and chemistry. They’d been caught up in each other.
