Dreams Lost

No truer words can express Zack and Anna-Grace’s lives for the past twelve years – the years after their young love was shattered leaving both of them in a state of confusion, fury, and pain. For Zack, the years have been filled with uncertainty, not knowing if his Gracie is alive or dead and wondering why she left him if she is alive. Gracie has lived a life of fear since she was 16, allowing her past to haunt and dominate her present and her feelings of betrayal to consume her. Neither Zack nor Gracie has had any closure on the events that separated them because Zack’s been unable to find her, and Gracie wants nothing to do with the man who shattered her heart. But the past is exactly what they’re going to have to confront when they come face to face and answers are not going to be easily found because one is completely in the dark and the other wants nothing to do with the person who betrayed her in a way she believes there’s no coming back from…can Zack and Gracie’s dreams be reborn or are they too far gone to be found?

As I read Safe At Last, my heart broke for both Zack and Gracie. Maya Banks does a great job of illustrating all of the emotions that the first loves go through as they deal with the fallout of reconnecting and setting facts straight. Both of them feel betrayed by the other and that type of feeling cuts deep and changes a person, is clearly shown in Zack’s frustration to understand what Gracie is accusing him of doing all of the those years ago and Gracie’s overwhelming fear to be anywhere near him.

The plot line centers on Zack and Gracie unearthing the truth about what happened to their relationship twelve years ago, but there is also a secondary storyline that deals with a dangerous enemy threatening their lives. The situation forces them together, and Zack and his teammates must work to protect those they love while Zack also works to understand how he lost the love of his life. Maya Banks seamlessly ties the two situations together, allowing readers to understand what’s at stake for all those involved, but the one aspect I would have liked to see a bit more of is Zack and Gracie’s reconnection…everything that happens after the truth is learned…how the issues are resolved…how they reestablish themselves as a couple. I was waiting for that insight as I rode through the torment and anguish with Zack and Gracie, and I just didn’t feel like enough information was given.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed Zack and Gracie’s story, and I’ll definitely be checking out the first two books in the series.

Perk walked to his bed and sat with a plop on the edge. It was going to be smaller than the king size bed in his home in the city, but if I thought about it, we slept close to each other every night when we were together. The smaller mattress would make no difference.

“It seems that everywhere I turn, someone knew you. Someone knew where you were. I’ve been searching for you for twelve years, and I was the only one who didn’t know where you were, while everyone else did.”

“Twelve years?” I asked, as I came to sit next to him.

He rubbed a hand down his face and told me about a rainy night long ago in a decrypted home. He claimed he saw me, with Elaine and Elliott, at the side of my sick uncle’s bed. It seemed a mystery to me that the same man who found me in the tent, had been the boy I scolded outside my uncle’s manor house. It seemed a bit like destiny that he kept finding me, although I didn’t remember him as clearly. He was a boy at a confusing time. He was a teenager at a time of dismay. Now, he was a man.

When his tale was complete, he looked a bit exhausted as if the weight of years got heavier instead of lifting off his shoulders. I was barely dressed as I left the bathroom in one of his large t-shirts. He undressed down to his boxers, which had become his custom and he covered us in his teenage bed.

I had to giggle as I snuggled up to face him.

“How many girls did you have in this thing?” I laughed, a bit bitterly with hope that the number wasn’t large.

“None,” he said immediately.

“Come on. No high school crush? Summer love? Stolen night or afternoon while your mother was away?”

“No one ever. In this bed.”

His words stunned me. Visions of Perk in hallways with women pinned to the wall and barrooms with girls on his lap filled my mind.

“Other beds, huh?” I questioned in disbelief. I’d seen his room the first night I stayed. It was obvious someone had slept there with him.

“No girl. No bed. Ever,” he repeated, staring up at the ceiling. He had one hand braced behind his head and the other lay between us, which wasn’t our customary position. I lay on my side, watching his body grow rigid with each part of my inquisition.

“I saw your room that first night. You’d had a girl there. Maybe not to sleep over, but someone had been there.” Bitterness was fully in my mouth at this point, as I envisioned someone else sleeping with him in the same manner we slept.

“No one in my bed. Before you,” he said, blowing out air. I could see his chest rising and falling exaggeratedly. If I didn’t know better, I thought he might be trying to calm himself as if he were about to explode at me.

“Perk, honest, it’s okay. I get it. You’re a rock star. Women have thrown themselves at you. It happens, right?” I wasn’t as convinced as I tried to sound, as if this was okay with me.

“Hollister, drop it. Please. There’s been no one else.”

“It’s fine, don’t tell me. I’m sure you’ve lost count,” I said snippily. Suddenly he turned to face me and the old mattress jiggled under his weight.

“I’m only going to say this once; one more time. There’s never been another woman in my bed. There’s never been any woman in any other bed with me. There hasn’t been any one else.”

From the glow of the moonlight outside his unshaded window, I saw his chocolaty eyes sparkle. His face was firm as he emphasized each word.

“Perkins, it’s okay…”

“Hollister, drop it,” he interrupted.

“I don’t need to know. I’m just…”

“I’m a virgin,” he blurted. The words hung in the darkened room.

My books all tend to be darker romance, edge of your seat, angst filled reads. My advice to my readers when starting one of my titles…prepare for the unexpected.

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters growing up. We also used to put on performances by acting out stories. I wanted to become an actress from an early age so I could live out many roles but unfortunately I learned early on that my mind was too active…(I would end up wanting to change the script)
I would watch films or TV shows and think of ways they could have improved the story if they took another direction so I thought it best that I tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light; some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

Some would say, including Arrow himself, that the hellish life he’s lived for the last five years since Mary’s death is from his own wrong doings…you reap what you sow, and it seems Arrow has garnered nothing but guilt, regret, and self hate. Anna and others would say that Arrow is a victim of circumstance and he didn’t make Mary’s choices for her; she chose to be with him, knowing the kind of lifestyle he led. Regardless of who’s to blame…where the fault truly lies, ever since the might Arrow lost Mary, he’s closed himself off from everyone, especially any woman who could make him feel more than icy bitterness and self disdain.

Arrow’s a wildcard for Anna – not only because she’s supposed to be off limits to him because her older brother’s a member of the Wind Dragons MC but also because at this point, Arrow’s incapable of having any kind of relationship with a woman, even of a physical nature and the push and pull between them due to Arrow’s issues is bound to cause her heartache. But Anna’s a headstrong woman who set her sights on Arrow and now will do what she can to pull Arrow out of the dark pit he finds himself in, even if it means falling in with him.

I felt both frustration and compassion for Arrow through much of the book…readers can truly understand why he’s so conflicted, but his hot/cold actions could drive anyone mad. Anna takes on a lot when she steps up for Arrow and tries to tackle his demons with him. It’s a difficult situation that doesn’t have a straight path or clear resolution, which Chantal Fernando does a fantastic job of illustrating. Arrow holds himself back from living due to guilt, and it’s going to take a lot for him to feel worthy of Anna, which may never happen.

The Wind Dragons MC is a family at its core; they may be dysfunctional and rowdy, but they have each other’s backs at all times. Chantal provides readers with insights into more than just Arrow and Anna’s relationship; we get to see Anna reconnect with her brother, Rake and establish a friendship with Tracker and Faye. I love that the story is about way more than the conflict or the main couple; it’s about the club and those who live for each other due to the brotherhood.

On a side note: Tracker is a fantastic supporting character; he brings humor and raunchiness to ease some of the heaviness of the overall story, and I can’t wait for the crazy that comes with him and his story!
