COVER REVEAL AND GIVEAWAY: Switch by Jennifer Ryder

Title: Switch
Series: Spark #5
Author: Jennifer Ryder
Cover Design: LM Creations
Release Date: September 2015
Synopsis

With an ex fiancé leaving her in debt, breaking up with her girlfriend and struggling to find a place she can afford, Sophie McKenna has hit an all-time low. Everyone thinks she’s a lesbian, and she likes it that way, but her estranged parents know better.

The foul-mouthed motocross mechanic, Rocco De Luca, only has his incarcerated brother left. Every day is a battle of the mind and of the bottle. Tequila and easy women soothe the pain, but they never fill the void.

Rocco doesn’t mind offering his spare room to the hot lesbian he refers to as ‘Suds’. She won’t be clingy, far from it, and he’s keen on the idea of getting to see a bit of girl on girl action.

With such volatile personalities under the same roof, and being in April and Spencer’s wedding party, they both have to learn to get along, even though they can’t stand each other.

He never thought he might actually grow to like her.

She never thought she might actually hate him less.

RELEASE WEEK BLITZ: REVIEW, EXCERPT, AND GIVEAWAY: Fury by Fisher Amelie

Fury RWB Banner

Fury

FURY Synopsis

Revenge is an euphoric thing. Trust me on this. Nothing compares to the release you get when you ruin someone’s life. When they’ve stolen important things. Things that didn’t belong to them. Things I revel in making them pay for.

What? Have I offended you? I’m not here to appeal to your delicate senses. I have no intention of placating your wishes or living within your personal belief system nor do I care if you hate me. And you will hate me. Because I’m a brutal, savage, cold-blooded murderer and I’m here for my revenge.

I’m Ethan Moonsong…And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most sacrificing man to the most feared and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I was Free banner

Review

A man filled with fury is one who seeks destruction and violence…one who is hellbent on surrounding himself with rage, hate, and the quest for revenge.

In Greek Mythology, a fury is a spirit of punishment – an avenger and tormentor of criminals. One who looks to right injustice but does so in dark and harsh ways.

Ethan Moonsong, Fisher Amelie’s latest hero in her Seven Deadly Sin series, embodies both of those definitions, and his thirst to release that fury nearly leads to his undoing on more than one occasion. There’s a battle waging inside of Ethan – one that he will have help to fight in the form of a girl who allows him to breathe just by being in her presence, but ultimately, Ethan will have to decide what he’s capable of…destruction, atonement, revenge, salvation – these are all a part of his make-up…all within his grasp… but it’s too soon to tell which side will ultimately be Ethan’s fate.

Finley Dyer is the antithesis of fury – she quells Ethan’s darkened soul; she’s the balm and comfort he needs. She has her own reasons to allow the darkness to consume her and to rage against the path that she has been forced to walk, but she chooses not to…she chose a different road – one that readers will realize is just as dangerous as the one Ethan was on without her due to the risks she’s willing to take to unburden herself from her past.

In the second half of the book, Ethan transfers his fury from a cause that has absolutely no merit to one that has more than enough, but that rage and unleashed darkness and passion can get out of hand and result in destructive situations where there’s no coming back from…even with the hope of salvation from the one person he wants to be worthy of – Finley. Because once a monsters created – even one that’s a shield and protector of those in need – misguided deeds can irrevocably alter someone’s path…someone’s future regardless of those who try to ensure otherwise.

Fury attests to the idea that human beings are capable of both heinous and admirable actions and that most of the time those two ideas are not separate but fused together and it’s up to each individual to make a choice which acts will define them.

Ethan and Finley’s story is quite the contemplative read…it delves into the human psyche and forces an examination about what’s truly at the core of individuals, especially those who have been altered by past events. Fisher Amelie does a fantastic job of illustrating Ethan’s torment and the darkness that consumes him, and she also allows readers to understand how/why things change for him, but there is also an emphasis on the fact that there is a part of a person that is never truly gone…it just lays dormant until it feels the need to be unleashed, which absolutely occurs when Ethan gets to Vietnam.

I absolutely love The Seven Deadly series by Fisher Amelie; she creates riveting story lines and characters who are complex and intriguing . As reader, I get to truly understand who each of Amelie’s characters is and why they’ve made the choices they have and what they plan to do to expunge their demons to become whole again. It’s never an easy process and sacrifices most definitely have to be made but that’s exactly how the characters grow because through the darkness, they are intelligent enough to grab on to even the smallest amount of hope and light to get them through.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

I took a deep breath as my fingers found their purchase and pulled out my keys. The key I needed somehow hit home and the lid sprang open, the knives staring at me, daring me. I watched them, waited for them to tell me what to do, but nothing came. They laid still, gleaming in the moonlight waiting for me too, it seemed. I sat in the passenger side seat, one boot still on the gravel, and made the first move. Raising a trembling hand toward the temptation, my fingers felt the cool length of each blade.

The rage still burned in my veins and I felt myself sobering, hesitating. No, I kept hearing. Pick them up, a voice said, so I did. Their weight felt good in my hands, comfortable. I breathed three breaths before gripping their handles and twirling them quickly in my palms. Even drunk, I could slaughter anything that moved. I was made to hunt. And hunt you shall, the voice urged.

I nodded and stood, shutting the passenger side door, tucking the blades into the back of my jeans, and camouflaging them with my shirt. My boots echoed with each step back toward the bar, heavy and dark like the night that surrounded me, like the thoughts in my head.

The adrenaline seared through my body, heightening every nerve, intensifying every sense. My heart pounded like a bass drum in my chest, pressing painfully against my ribs. My skin burned with anticipation.

I reached for the door handle.

“Where do you think you’re going?” a voice whispered, startling me.

I stopped, one hand on the handle. “Finley, go home,” I ordered her.

She stood from her leaning position against the outside wall of the bar, out of the shadows, and walked toward me. Her eyes seared through me. She came to me, stood closely, the heat from her body enveloping me.

“No, I don’t think I will,” she told me, looking up into my eyes. “At least not alone.”

She stood tenaciously, fearlessly. I noted how much taller she was than Cricket and it was a little bit intimidating to me, like what she said was going to happen whether or not I liked it. I respected her and I didn’t know why. I stared at her hard, but she didn’t budge. No, instead, she strengthened her own resolve, her jaw tightening with the decision and glared back even harder. She said and did things with such righteous authority, I felt powerless to her. I’d never felt that way before about a woman. It wasn’t pushy or irrational, it was simply as it was going to be.

My eyes and face relaxed the moment I acquiesced. “Fine.”

Her body followed suit and she nodded once, grabbing my arm and leading me toward my truck. Her hand reached into my jeans pocket, sending an inexplicable electrical charge through me, which I promptly chose to ignore, and yanked out my keys.

“Get in,” she ordered and I obeyed.

She threw herself into the driver’s side and slammed the door shut, sticking the keys in the ignition and turning only once. The engine started, daring not to further goad her. The stereo kicked on, belting something indicative of the moment we were leaving behind us, full of bass and a sharpness so edgy it echoed through my chest and head.

She shoved the truck in reverse, throwing her arm over the back of the bench, and her stare found mine. It was a solid look, packed full with a storm of unspoken words. Without breaking her gaze, she shifted into drive. She held there for a moment, driving her disappointment in me deep down into my soul before finally looking ahead to the end of the parking lot. I know I’m toxic, Finley, I thought, but that didn’t stop my mouth from retching awful thoughts.

“You have no reason to be pissed at me,” I told her, practically begging her to speak.

She didn’t say a word as she pulled out onto the road with more punch than the Finley I knew normally would have, turning toward the interstate. I had no clue where she was taking us, but I wasn’t about to ask.

Just make her turn around, I thought. Tell her you won’t do anything.

I opened my mouth to speak but caught a glimpse of her hair whipping about her determined face from the open windows and forgot what I was going to say. I turned my gaze toward the windshield. The light from the headlights exposing just enough of the road to make me nervous at the speed we were traveling. One hand found the dash to steady myself.

“What’s wrong, Ethan?” she asked.

“Huh?” I asked, whipping my head her direction.

“Too fast for you?”

“No.”

“Liar,” she said, calling me out.

I wiped my palms down the thighs of my jeans. “Slow down,” I said, swallowing.

“Oh, now you want to play it safe?” Her eyes narrowed. “You’re so selfish, you know that?” she asked. I was taken aback. She’d never talked to me like that.

She leisurely drove across lanes as if traveling more than a hundred miles per hour was completely normal.

“What?” I demanded, feeling alert. The adrenaline had sobered me quickly.

“You’re selfish. And stupid. Let’s not forget stupid.”

My blood boiled. “Whatever, Finley.”

“Whatever, Finley,” she mocked. “Don’t you know I’m suffering? That I’m the only person in the world who suffers? Can’t you see that I’m determined to be foolish, Finley?”

“What do you know of suffering?” I asked, incensed.

Wide eyes met mine and her jaw clenched as she pulled over, slamming us to a stop. Her hair flew forward from the force before settling onto her chest and shoulders.

“I know more about suffering than you could ever possibly imagine. You don’t know shit! So you got your heart broken. So what! There are worse things, you know. There are things out there that would curl your toes to know about, Ethan.”

About BURYING WATER

The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

Luke Boone doesn’t know exactly what his uncle Rust is involved in but he wants in on it—the cars, the money, the women. And it looks like he’s finally getting his wish. When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set—one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it’s not exactly legal, Luke’s never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of gorgeous socialite named Rain.

Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game—at only twenty-six years old, she’s one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington, DC, major crime unit, and she’s just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the West coast’s most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she’ll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year-old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle’s footsteps.

As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she’ll be able to leave it all behind. Or if she’ll even want to.

About CHASING RIVER

Armed with two years’ worth of savings and the need to experience life outside the bubble of her Oregon small town, twenty-five-year old Amber Welles is prepared for anything. Except dying in Dublin. Had it not been for the bravery of a stranger, she might have. But he takes off before she has the chance to offer her gratitude.

Twenty-four-year-old River Delaney is rattled. No one was supposed to get hurt. But then that American tourist showed up. He couldn’t let her die, but he also couldn’t risk being identified at the scene—so, he ran. Back to his everyday life of running his family’s pub. Only, everyday life is getting more and more complicated, thanks to his brother, Aengus, and his criminal associations. When the American girl tracks River down, he quickly realizes how much he likes her, how wrong she is for him. And how dangerous it is to have her around. Chasing her off would be the smart move.

Maybe it’s because he saved her life, or maybe it’s because he’s completely different from everything she’s left behind, but Amber finds herself chasing after River Delaney. Amber isn’t the kind of girl to chase after anyone.

And River isn’t the kind of guy she’d want to catch.

Anger still simmered in her eyes and her body was stiff. I pulled cash out of my wallet and laid it on the table. It was enough to cover the check and a decent sized tip. Cassie slid out of the booth and I followed her out the door. When we were in the parking lot, standing beside her car, she turned to me. I buried my hands in my pockets.

“Before you leave, I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I’m sorry for everything. I’m sorry for what I did to you and I’m sorry for what I did to Ben. I was a complete fuckup and I hope someday you can forgive me.”

“You fucked up, Jax.”

“I did. I know I did and I regret it. Every day.”

She nodded, her eyes still full of anger. “I should hate you.” I nodded and glanced away. “I should hate you and want nothing to do with you. I should never want to forgive you or ever want to talk to you again.”

“I know. And I’m sorry. I’m so damned sorry.” I tried my best to hold it together. I never thought I’d get this chance to say I was sorry to her face. Hell, I never thought I’d be face-to-face with her to begin with. “I wish there was more I could say, but that’s it. I’m sorry. I wish there was something I could do to make it up to you.”

“I want to hate you.” Her voice wavered and she sounded like she was either fighting back anger or tears. Her eyes were full of turmoil, as though she was battling with herself. “I want to hate you, Jax. So damned much, but I can’t. I can’t find it in me to hate you. I hate what you did. I hate what you became, but it’s so damned great to see you like this.” She blew out a breath, as though preparing herself. “I can’t hate you, Jax, because I still love you.” She paused and stared into my eyes. My heart thundered as I waited for what came next. “I hate that I love you.”

That hurt. A lot. “I’m sorry, Cassie.”

“Stop calling me Cassie!” she screamed. She turned and opened her car door and I was so fucking confused. What the fuck was happening? One second she seemed remorseful, then angry, then like she wanted something more from me.

“What do you want me to do? What can I do?”

She whirled and faced me. “I don’t know. I don’t know what to do. I don’t even know how I fucking feel.”

“I understand that.”

“You can’t understand anything, Jax!” A tear fell down her cheek and I had to fight to keep my distance. “I loved you, Jax. And then I lost you. I know I walked away from you, but I lost you long before I left. I wanted to be with you, despite all of the shit you put me through. Even though you kept tearing me apart. I loved you so damn much, I was blind.” Tears fell freely down her cheeks. “Every time you come into my life, it ends up in pieces. Before, then at my wedding, and again now.” She wiped at her cheeks angrily. “Fuck, I’m sick of crying over you! I’m sick of my heart hurting and I’m sick of missing you.” A sob broke free. “I’m sick of loving you, Jax, because it hurts too damned much.”

Amy

Everything freezes, including my breath.

I’m pretty sure the shiny brass desk clock on his stupidly large desk even stops ticking.

“What the fuck?” The man, who is most definitely not Edward Merritt, hisses softly.

Years of practice keep me from completely losing it in that moment. I cross my legs and channel all the Gwyneth Paltrow-cool hammered into me from finishing school.

“It’s… You’re…” The Man from Wilmington extends his phone toward me, but he must not’ve had a good grip. It slips like a bar of soap from his hand and arcs through the air straight into my lap.

Thank God for small mercies. I’m snort a laugh, which cuts the tension at once.

“You’re welcome.” With a teasing smile I lift the small black device and place it on the desktop in front of me.

Going forward, I will never forget his response. It’s splendid in its precision. I can’t help but admire his control. Marcus Merritt sits in his leather-studded chair, and his face transforms into a mask of professionalism.

The slightest smile curves the side of his mouth, and a tingle moves across my stomach. “Good catch,” he says.

“It’s not every day I have expensive technology lobbed at me.”

“Sorry. Strenuous call.”

“Opposing counsel?”

“Dry cleaners. They keep breaking my buttons.”

My lips tighten against another laugh, and I fight every urge humming under my skin. Damn him for being as witty as he is attractive.

“You are not Edward Merritt.” It’s a nice, orienting statement.

“Edward is my father.” His brows knit over green-hazel eyes as he looks down at his desk. “Who the fuck is Amalie Knight?”

“My mother was going through a French phase.” I give him a teasing wink, and his eyes flick away from mine fast. If he weren’t so composed, I might take that to mean something.

“So Amy is short for Amalie?”

“Patrick couldn’t say Amalie when he was a little boy.”

His eyebrows rise and he leans back nodding. “Right. Patrick… and Stuart’s little sister.”

His playfulness shuts down, and I refuse to let disappointment rise in my chest. So we have a nice, teasing banter to go with our blazing-hot hook-up sex. I will not be hopping out of any frying pans into any fires. My moment with this “Man in Wilmington” will remain precisely that. A moment. In Wilmington.

Lightening my tone, I force a bright smile and lay it all out there. “My mother and your sister think you can introduce me to all the right people in Chicago.”

“I doubt you need my help with that.” His eyes don’t meet mine. In fact it seems he’s avoiding my eyes now.

“I don’t, but it means a lot to them.”

That makes him look up, but only to my neck. “You’re looking for something in marketing?”

“Yes.” I swipe the screen on my phone. “Give me your number, and I’ll send you my resume. I have a finance degree from Cornell, but I minored in marketing. One of my graduate projects was a rollout for a software design company located in Ithaca. My team won an ADDY for it.”

He leans forward and reaches across the desk. “It’s probably easier if I enter my number.”

His white cuff ends just above his large hand. Neatly trimmed nails… My lip involuntarily catches in my teeth at the memory of those fingers clutching my bare ass, those large hands pulling me against his rock-hard cock, driving deep between my thighs. My back slammed against the wall, his groan in my ear as he came. Shit.

“Sure.” I blink fast, dismissing that red-hot memory as I pass my brushed-gold phone to him. “I’ve opened Messenger. Just enter your number, and I’ll send it to you.”

“We don’t have a full-time PR function in our office.” His voice is apologetic.

“Most smaller firms don’t. It’s a contract service.”

He passes the device back, watching our hands. Our fingers brush lightly, and I swear to god it sparks. Get it together, Amy.

Looking down, I see the digits and debate whether to save them. It’s a recipe for trouble, but I do it. Then I attach my resume and hit send.

“You’ve got it now.” I lift my chin, and… eye contact.

Shit on a stick. He was right in avoiding it. Looking into his smoky hazel gaze, I see all my naughty thoughts reflected right back at me.

“It’s probably best we don’t work together anyway.” Why did I say that?

An eyebrow arches, and that damn sexy grin is back. “Really? How come.” He thinks he’s got me.

“Nepotism.” He can’t honestly think I would grow up in the house of alphas I did and be weak.

“I think we’d have to be related to be accused of nepotism.”

“We practically are. I mean, with Elaine and Patrick and all.”

“My sister, your brother. There’s no relation between us.”

“I suppose that’s a good thing.” Damn my mouth. Standing, I decide it’s time for me to get out of here before I say anything else. “I know you’re busy. Thanks for taking the time to meet with me.”

“I’ll give you a call if I hear anything.” He stands just as fast. “And maybe I’ll see you around.”

My eyes sweep his too-large office as I think. “It seems likely our paths will cross.”

COVER REVEAL AND GIVEAWAY: Fighting For Forever by JB Salsbury

Title: Fighting for Forever
Series: Fighting #6
Author: JB Salsbury
Cover Design: Pixel Mischief Design
 Release Date: June 23, 2015
Synopsis

Slut. Hooker. Whore.

The taunts never bothered me. They only see what I allow them to see, and a Las Vegas stripper is the perfect cover.

My life had direction. I had a mission—until the man I needed vanished and is presumed dead.

It’s time to move on—give up the dream for revenge—and no one shows me that more than the mop-headed fighter with eyes the color of the ocean.

If anyone can teach me just how sweet life can be, it’s him. But first, I’d have to let go.

Mase. Baywatch. Mayhem.

I’m known by many names, but there’s only one that stirs panic and worry in my gut every time I’m called it.

Brother.

I’ve bailed him out of trouble for years, so when he turns up in Vegas and asks for me, I’m prepared for the worst. And the worst is exactly what I get in the form of a lilac-eyed beauty named Trix.

She’s everything I hate about Vegas: a stripper, loose with her body and her morals. But there’s something about her, a complexity that she buries deep, and I’m determined to uncover it.

The deeper I go, the less I understand. When I finally learn the truth, we engage in a battle where life and death hang in the balance.

Fighting could kill us both, but if we win, forever is the prize.

COVER REVEAL: Let Me Go (The Invisibles #5) by Michelle Lynn

Blurb

My name is Rob Winters, aka, Jackass. Even to my closest friends.

I wasn’t always so arrogant and condescending. It only took one night to change me—one point twenty-seven seconds, to be exact.

When tragedy struck, I promised myself, no matter what, unbreakable chains would lock my heart. If one veers too close or digs too deep, the cruel and mean bastard many hate is unleashed. My plan has succeeded for the past seven years.  I’ve driven away a girlfriend and killed a few friendships along the way.

Then, just when the chains loosen around my heart, she walks into my life—or worse, the room next door. She strolls into my house with her bouncy brown curls and banging body, slithering herself through the smallest opening and making me crave the one thing I’ve denied myself these past years.

Her smell, her eyes, and her caring nature are everything I’m not worthy of enjoying. How long do I have to struggle with the demons that haunt me every night before the torture ends? Forever, I remind myself, but the links protecting my heart break each time Paige Kensington enters the room.

AmazonBarnes & NobleiBooks

Elements of Chemistry: HEAT is part 2 of a 3 part series (65k word novel) and ends in a cliffhanger.

**Blurb contains spoilers if you haven’t read Elements of Chemistry: ATTRACTION**
Four days left.
Private beach (…and boat).
Not so invisible girl.
And maybe less of a jerk-faced bully than originally thought.
What’s the worst (or the best) that could happen?

Kaitlyn is finding life outside of the science cabinet of obscurity to be quite illuminating …and so are her pants.
When things heat up between Kaitlyn Parker and Martin—previously known as the jerk-faced bully—Sandeke, she places her trust in the one person she never thought capable of earning it, let alone keeping it safe. Fortunately or unfortunately for Kaitlyn, where she gives her trust she can’t help but also give her heart.

But how will the world beyond the sanctuary of their newfound connection react to their relationship? Soon senators, chinless billionaires, and elements beyond Martin and Kaitlyn’s control want to weigh in on the young couple’s future.

Navigating the chaotic inferno of new love might be more than Kaitlyn bargained for, and much, much more than her trust—or her heart—can handle.

Review

Heat is an apt name for book 2 in Penny Reid’s Elements of Chemistry series because boy do Martin and Kaitlyn bring the sizzle in this one, and as their relationship grows and they begin to get to know each other better, their bond solidifies but Kaitlyn’s constant questioning and scrutiny may hinder any true connection.

After Martin explains to Kaitlyn the events at the end of Chemistry, the logical and reasonable Kaitlyn gives into the plethora of feelings she has for him, and for once, she tries not to rationalize every move she makes or question every word or act Martin expresses. Martin pushes Kaitlyn to see what’s right in front her and for once stop overanalyzing everything. But because emotions have always been difficult for Kaitlyn to express and the fact that they come with a lack of control and an abundance of confusion, her head is at odds with her heart and her body, which further complicates Kaitlyn and Martin’s week together.

Reid explores the intensity of Kaitlyn and Martin’s attraction to each other in Heat – their passion and their lust; the book also focuses on unearthing a bit more about who Kaitlyn and Martin are as they get to know each other better and as they begin to discover new things about themselves as well. But Kaitlyn’s overthinking and Martin’s quest for something that she doesn’t believe in threatens to undo any of the progress that Martin has made with Kaitlyn and then with the cliffy at the end, it’s too soon to tell what Reid has in store for them in Capture.

The continuation of Kaitlyn and Martin’s story brings all the feels with it for both the characters and the readers. There are moments of passion, excitement, intrigue and fury, and the last emotion is mostly towards the predicament that outside forces thrust upon them and Kaitlyn’s staunch adherence to reason.

Reid’s flawless writing continues to capture my attention, and although I know she’s going to force her characters to work to create a future together, which will undoubtedly torture her readers, the buildup/flow of the story and the characters Reid creates make it worth the angst filled journey.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

“What are you doing?”

I lifted my eyes at the sound of Martin’s voice, but not immediately. I finished the paragraph I was reading, then I looked up, holding my place in the book with my thumb.

He was dressed in swim trunks and he was wet, with beads of water dripping down his chest. As such, he looked super hot. However, only the right side of his body was visible as the door blocked the other side. His hand was still on the doorknob and he leaned a tad to one side, into the room.

My eyes wandered over his form and I allowed myself to appreciate the beauty of Martin Sandeke like I might admire the beauty of a cold, soulless statue. Physically, he was a magnificent male specimen: corded muscle, long limbs, and rigid angles. Even his temples were drool worthy, especially since I knew his head housed a giant—albeit mismanaged—brain. Truly, he was one of our finest. His ancestors should really give themselves a big pat on the back.

A little pool of water had gathered at his feet, which made me wonder how long he’d been standing in the doorway. My eyes traveled upward again and I noticed he wore an angry expression. He looked livid.

I started a little at the heated annoyance in his stare. Then I glanced around the laundry room, searching for the source of his anger. I found that I was still alone. Therefore, I surmised his fury must be directed at me.

But, just to be sure, I said, “Who? Me?”

“Yes. You,” he growled, then stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. “What are you doing in here?”

I raised the book and tipped my head toward it. “I’m reading.”

Martin exhaled loudly, another growl. “I can see that, Parker. But why the fuck are you in here reading?”

I frowned at his use of profanity, my shoulders bunching with tension. I realized I’d gotten used to it, how often he cussed; I’d accepted it as part of him. But that was before he’d left me standing at the entrance to a party I didn’t want to attend, and that was before I’d seen him kissing a random girl.

“It’s the first sequel to The Three Musketeers. I’ve been meaning to read it. I found it on the shelf in the library—or living room, or whatever room. There are too many rooms in this house, so I don’t know what half of them are called.”

Martin gritted his teeth, and I got the distinct impression he wanted to strangle me. “Parker. This is a party. And you’re in the laundry room? Reading?”

I paused a beat to make sure this wasn’t a trick question. When I could find nothing amiss with his interrogation, I nodded slowly. “Yes. This is a party. I am in the laundry room reading.”

“Why? What is wrong with you?”

My mouth opened and closed but no words arrived, because his questions continued to confuse me. Finally, I admitted, “Martin, I don’t know what you want me to say or why you appear to be upset. I found the book when I was in one of the several rooms with lots of books. I’ve been meaning to read it. So I picked it up and found a quiet place. Why are you so angry?”

He charged at me and I ineffectually scrambled backward on the washing machine. In less than two seconds he’d pulled the book from my hands, slapped it on the counter at my left, and braced his arms on either side of my legs, leaning forward.

I realized he’d made me lose my page in the book. I decided to ignore my urge to vocalize this complaint, because his eyes were beyond heated.

They were incensed blue flames. I braced myself, my gaze wide and watchful, and flinched when he lifted a hand. I relaxed a smidge when he used it to push my hair off my shoulder.

When he spoke, his voice was low, strained, like he was trying very hard to control his temper. “I brought you here as my date. That was our agreement.”

I nodded once. “Yes. I know.”

“And, instead of talking to people or having fun, you’re in here reading a book.”

I kept my voice even and calm, tried to sound soothing. “I am having fun. I’m reading a book.”

About Penny Reid

Author-Photo-Penny-Reid-300x300

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
