“Don’t you have a date to get back to? I’m sure you would rather annoy her.”

He laughs at me. I’m starting to get angry with him. Why can’t he ignore me like he’s done the past eight years? I was fine before he came back into my life. I want to return to my mundane Keegan-less existence.

“Do you mean Gretchen? You know she’s my assistant, and she attends these things with me time to time.” he answers.

I look at him dumbfounded, “You’re kidding. Right?”

“No, we’re just friends, actually have been since college.”

Did he say since college? What the what?

“Since you two are such great friends then you don’t need me, do you?” I bark at him.

“Aimee, I’ve needed you since the day we met. You should realize that by now.”

Now this conversation is ticking me off. I’m losing my carefully composed patience.

“Wow, what a load of crap. I’m not playing these games with you Keegan; I’m not a child anymore, and I know exactly what this is” – I wave my hands between us –“You couldn’t just leave me alone. You left me, Keegan, without an explanation. It’s been eight years and suddenly you need me. Where were you when I needed you? I’m not the girl I was before you left. I’m stronger, and you know what, I don’t need you. Do me a favor and pretend I don’t exist. You’ve had plenty of practice, so I’m sure it won’t be too hard.” My breathing is hard, he’s staring at me and I swear I see a hint of desire in his blue eyes.

“There’s that fire I’ve missed.”

I let out a laugh. “If you’ll excuse me, the air in here is stifling.”

I turn and walk away towards a set of French doors that lead to the outside terrace. My breathing is fast and the confrontation with him is making me tremble.

I hear footsteps behind me and know he’s followed.

Without turning to face him I ask, “why can’t you just leave me be?”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t Aimee. I want to fix this between us,” he admits.

“You’ve ignored me all week. I get that you’re busy and important and all . . . ”

He smirks at me, “you think I’m important?”

“Hello? This is all for you. Everyone is here for you,” I say.

“And I’m only here for you.” He closes the distance, and my heart plummets. I’m on the verge of tears. What the hell is he saying?

“What?”

“You. I’m here for you. I miss you Aimee.”

I can’t hold back the tears any longer and my eyes start to water. Keegan steps even closer and grabs my face in both hands, taking his thumbs and wiping away my tears.

“Don’t cry. I’m here for you and nothing else. I only care about you.” He says looking into my eyes.

He closes the remaining distance and brushes his thumb along my lower lip and my legs lose all feeling. I may just pass out from his touch. He says he’s here for me and I can’t help but melt in his arms. Staring at me, he says, “I’ve wanted to do this again for eight years.”

His lips drop to mine and I close my eyes relishing the moment. I can taste the scotch on his lips and it’s divine. I pray he doesn’t hear my heart pounding. He kisses me slowly, his lips soft and tender. He let’s go of my face and pushes me against the railing behind me. His body is hard against mine and I feel his warmth. I deepen the kiss and wrap my arms around his neck. Our lips move together feverishly and I’m in heaven. Too soon he breaks the kiss and I whimper at the loss. He places his forehead against mine as both of us try to catch our breath.

“I’m here for you.” He whispers and I nod at him, holding him close, not wanting to lose this feeling.

Excerpt

Once I’m completely nude, I kneel in the center of the room with my gaze trained on the floor and wait. My heartbeat is crashing against my ribs, and I’m filled with a strange sense of longing and anticipation. Sex is never like this. It’s always been in a bed, under the covers, without any dirty talk or forceful commands. Simple and straightforward. I know sex with my Dom is going to be anything but ordinary. And that’s way more exciting than it should be.

As I kneel in my darkened bedroom, naked and wet between my legs, the noise in my brain begins to quiet. I’m singularly focused on him. My gaze never strays from its focus on the floor near the door, on the swath of light that comes from the hall. My heartbeat grows heavy with anticipation.

I continue waiting in my spot and several minutes later, I hear him. Footsteps coming closer.

When he enters the room, he’s carrying some type of small black leather bag. My heart riots in my chest.

He calmly crosses the room, all but ignoring me, and sets the bag on my bed. I don’t know if I should watch, but I can’t help my eyes from following him. He removes his suit jacket and neatly folds it, placing it on the table beside my bed. He unzips the bag and removes a black strip of fabric, and then turns to face me.

“Those greedy little eyes want to see everything, to form an opinion on it all, yes?”

I don’t answer. My breathing grows shallow as I continue watching him.

“The only thing I want you focused on is sensation, feeling. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

“I want to show you what you’re capable of. Do you trust me?”

“Yes,” I say again. I’m not sure why, but I do. And trust me, I’m aware it’s absolutely insane.

He stands behind me and fastens the silk fabric over my eyes, tying it behind my head. It blocks my vision entirely. My heart rate increases as the realization that I’m in total darkness sinks in.

I listen closely and hear him walk toward the bed. Then I hear a match spark to life, and my entire body stiffens. His footsteps cross the room, and I’m about to ask what’s going on when the faint scent of sandalwood and black currant greets me. He’s lit a candle, I’m pretty sure. Maybe this is all part of a ritual for him. Nothing is rushed, everything is calculated and planned out, and I like that he’s taken so much time and care into planning my lessons.

Yield is the conclusion to Cal and Macy’s story, and it’s where Macy’s secrets are revealed..where Cal and Macy’s “filthy fucking” turns into so much more for both of them…and where Macy must decide whether or not she’s going to surrender to her past and continue to let it define her or fight through the pain and confront her “monsters,” never yielding to it/them again.  It’s the story where Macy tries to find solace in Cal’s love despite her deep rooted feelings of inadequacy…of being damaged beyond repair, and it’s where Saint Cal attempts to slay all of Macy’s dragons and prove to her that she’s worth EVERYTHING.

As much as this is Cal’s story and Cal’s perspective, this is just as much Macy’s, and even though readers don’t get much of her viewpoint, Sawyer Bennett does a fabulous job of illustrating all of Macy’s feelings through Cal’s tender treatment of her and his fierce loyalty.

I love how Sawyer portrays Macy throughout the series and the fact that Sawyer doesn’t transform Macy into someone completely healed at the end of the series. Macy is such a dynamic character; she’s fierce and protective, but she’s also vulnerable and somewhat weak despite the mask she attempts to continually wear. And, Cal is all sorts of sexy goodness wrapped up into one hell of a chivalrous man.

Macy’s back story is tragic and scarring and Sawyer is sensitive in her presentation of what happens to Macy and concretely shows the struggles and destructive patterns that can result from such heinous acts. Cal is Macy’s perfect shield in dealing with the fall out and I loved that he never backed down even when Macy tried to push him away; he remains steadfast, which is exactly what Macy needed.

Yield is such  a fantastic conclusion to Cal and Macy’s story…the sex is still kinky and hot, but there’s so much more to their relationship now, which is clearly shown in the final book of the series.
