“Take off your clothes.” My voice is gravelly and I hardly recognize it. I’ve imagined how she looks naked a million different times. Dreamt of this moment more than I can count. My hands circle around the device clutched in my grip, squeezing firmly.

Prologue

Three little words.

Cory James knows that better than anyone heading into the final volume of Hardcore. Cory felt powerless against Jade and her blackmail and now she has to face the fallout of her thievery, which means breaking the heart of the man she has grown to care for and her own. But despite the pain, shame, and loss that Cory feels, she also rebuilds and redefines herself, becoming a more complete person and realizing that sometimes loyalty and sacrifice come at a pretty big price.

I loved how the final volume in the serial focused on Cory’s personal growth first and then worked on repairing her relationship with Van. It was a slow process, which, at times, was a bit frustrating as a reader, but it had to be that way in order for everyone to be able to move forward.

Staci Hart’s Hardcore serial was an absolute pleasure to experience. The idea of freedom through parkour is an intriguing idea and one that is delivered beautifully. It’s refreshing and innovative, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Staci Hart.

Leaning across the bed, I grab a condom from the side table and hand it to her.

MacKenzie doesn’t do reckless – at least when it comes to her heart. Growing up in foster care and taking care of herself for most of her life, she’s used to being alone. It’s safer that way because there’s no chance of getting hurt; she can rely on herself and keep all emotions at bay. But Kenzie’s carefully constructed life gets turned upside down by a wild fighter who makes her want to connect with him in a way that she has never allowed herself to want before.

Ian knows a thing or two about letting it all hang out in the ring as an MMA fighter and as a bit of a ladies’ man. Ian’s first priority, though, is his fighting career, putting that ahead of everything, even his lust for Kenzie. Their “almost” night together was thwarted due to Ian’s training, but that doesn’t mean their attraction to each other fizzled out; in fact, it has only intensified regardless of how hard they both try to fight it.

Reckless Love is a great title for Kenzie and Ian’s book because it speaks to their inability to see what’s clearly right in front of them. Kenzie and Ian want each other; they’re desperate for that connection. Kenzie feels safe and protected by Ian’s side, and Ian feels complete in a way that he never realized he would. The rashness they display in terms of their feelings for one another is not in a way most would think because they don’t give into their attraction easily. Their hasty acts actually keep them at arm’s length – both thinking they’re not what the other person wants. Kenzie doesn’t want to be a distraction or a burden even though she desperately wants to be wanted and cared for by Ian.

Kenzie and Ian’s relationship is a slow burn, taking two steps forward and one step back on multiple occasions throughout the story. It’s a bit frustrating at times to witness how hesitant both of them are to dive into what they so desperately want and need, but Kendall Ryan makes it clear why the reluctance is there. Getting both Kenzie and Ian’s perspectives also provides necessary insight into the choices made and gives readers hope that the next reckless decision they make will be succumbing to overwhelming feelings for each other.

“So, it’s true then?”

My breathing stopped. “What’s true?” I asked cautiously.

“That you don’t have sex before a big fight.” Her look was so innocent and hopeful, yet it still took me a second to figure out why she was asking this.

“Yes,” I finally answered. Her cute little frame seemed to relax a little, making me feel—once again—like a total dick. She didn’t know I paid Sara; she was talking about something completely different, about the night we almost hooked up. The night I told her I couldn’t because I had a fight the next day.

She chewed at the inside of her cheek a moment, maybe considering what I’d just said. Shit, that meant she thought I’d just made that up to get rid of her. Not fucking likely. Putting the brakes on that night had been the hardest thing I’d ever done.

“So,” she said as she looked up at me innocently through her eyelashes. “What does that do? For a fighter, I mean.”

I chuckled. “You mean besides frustrate the hell out of us?”

She smiled—thank fucking goodness—then nodded for me to continue.

“You know that stereotype that most guys are boneheaded cave dwellers driven by instinct?”

“Is it considered a stereotype if it’s true?” she said, then giggled.

God, she had a great laugh.

I nodded. “That’s what I was getting at. On some very basic level, we fight in order to survive and procreate.”

She scrunched up her nose, making her look super cute. “But wouldn’t you fight better then? If you have sex, then you have someone to fight for, right?”

Her hand went up to mine, which was still resting on her shoulder. She absentmindedly played with my fingers until she noticed I was watching her, and realized what she’d been doing. She let her hand drop.

I shook my head. “We fight to procreate. Once we’ve had sex, we’ve done the job and have no reason to fight.”

“Maybe she’s upset because she’s named after a teenage vampire.” I laughed.

“It’s not a vampire. It’s the teenage vampire’s girlfriend and it was a book! Roni loved it,” Trigg said, running his hands through his already tussled hair.

Bella’s crying slowed down to a sniffle and she grabbed at my Adam’s apple. I looked down at the little girl and her eyes were fixated on my neck with her mouth in a perfect O.

“Bwoooo,” she said, patting her chubby hands on my neck.

Trigg and Trey stared at me as if I was some sort of science experiment.

Bella just giggled and patted both hands on my neck. “Bwoo! Bwoo!”

“I think she likes your tattoos,” Trigg whispered as if he was afraid to say it out loud.

I smiled. “Yeah? Do you like Uncle Trippy’s ink?”

I moved slowly until I was able to sit on the couch and pull one of my sleeves up. “See, Bella? Uncle Tripp has more. We have some foxes. Some rabbits. And look green leaves.”

Bella giggled and tapped her palm on my arms.

I looked up at Trigg. “I think your daughter’s going to be the next tattooed Chapman. I can call and get her an appointment if you need to.”

Trigg smirked. “Very funny.”

Bella tapped on my arms and tried to pull my sleeve up. “Bwoo! Bwoo!”

“Okay, Okay, I’ll show you more.” I pulled my sleeve up as high as it could go and turned my arm over. She clapped her hands and giggled, slapping my arm.

“I think we may be calling you as a babysitter soon for Oveta,” Trey said, taking the seat next to me.

I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Trey. “Oveta? That’s seriously what you’re going to name your kid?”

Trey nodded and looked at me like I was an idiot. “Yeah, Oveta Culp Hobby was the first female secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and the US Army Corps.”

I laughed. “So, Monica didn’t want to go with Condoleezza and you wouldn’t go with Hilary?”

He sighed. “Something like that. Okay, naming kids is hard!”

I glanced at Trigg, who was still standing and watching us. “I guess it could be worse. It could be a teenage vampire.”
