Blurb

Road Captain of the Devil’s Dust Motorcycle Club, Bobby has the scars to prove just how dangerous his life is. He gives the world he knows hell and loves every moment of it. Wearing a panty-dropping grin along the way, his fierce life has never been a problem for him, until her. Jessica is the only female who has him distracted in his game. After taking him to bed, she’s the only woman to tell him to take a hike. Waking with her gone, he can’t resist her pull. He’s seen the marks on her body, ones which tell the horrors she’s lived through. He’s also seen the fear in her eyes when she lets herself become weak to his advances. Bobby has a decision to make. Can he help Jessica, or will it mean giving up his carefree life?

Jessica, also known as Doc, lives life in fear. Years back, she ran to the Devil’s Dust for protection, seeking the demise of her abusive, dominant husband. Her mind and soul tortured by her past, she can’t allow herself to move forward. The only thing in her sight is her daughter’s safety. Even if she has the attention of one particular tattooed biker, she can’t succumb to his charm and drag her daughter back into a world of danger, no matter how much he thinks he can save her.

Mistakes will be made.

Fears will be faced.

Pain will be remembered.

Can Bobby and Jessica survive the dangers they bring upon themselves?

I was happy until I met him.
I was content until I met her.

That’s a lie. I was lonely.
That’s a lie. I was incomplete.

He was nothing but a handsome distraction.
She was nothing but a pretty pastime.

That’s untrue. He changed my life.
That’s untrue. She altered my world.

I blame him.
I blame her.

I blame myself. He wasn’t to know.
I blame myself. It wasn’t her fault.

I don’t want to need him.
I hate that I want her.

There’s no easy solution.
There’s no going back.

Excerpt

I realise that I’ve been waiting to see her since the last time she was here. I’ve wanted to feel that electricity that fires off her when she holds my gaze, and every week that she’s not been here, I’ve been disappointed. We haven’t spoken, haven’t even exchanged smiles. There’s just something there. It’s like we seek each other out, and I don’t know why. It’s turned in to a habit I like more than the ecstasy I take.

“Hey Finny boy, Tequila, you in or you going for a piss?” Kyle calls out behind me loading his question with the silent search of my intentions for this evening.

I glance back at him answering “Yeah, man.” When I look back, she’s still there. Looking. Just looking. No smile. No scowl. Just looking at me like there’s something compelling her to do so. The light catches her lip ring and my eyes roam the length of her body like a hungry man that’s been starved for weeks, no, months. She gives off something that makes my hormones run rampant, like an unbalanced teenager. Only I’m fully aware that I’m a grown man and I know exactly what I want to do to her. God, what I would do to her. She’s dressed in a little black dress, and I mean, little. It’s simple, but the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. It hugs her tiny, perfect waist, and only just covers her ass. Her legs, her perfect legs, which even though she isn’t tall, look just long enough to wrap around my waist …

“Here.” Harley nudges my arm and hands me a shot of Tequila. I take it mindlessly, all the while still locked on to the enigma on the other side of the room. Then she does something that floors me. She nods, winks, and raises her glass to me across the room. For a second, I’m stunned at the action. We’ve been watching each other for weeks, no words, no actions, just the silent knowledge that we both know we are looking at each other. Now she’s broken the silent pact, what does that mean?

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: April 10, 2015

Cover Design: Melchelle Designs

Synopsis

Not afraid to speak his mind or make a scene, Nathaniel Kelly has made a name for himself as country music’s ultimate bad boy.
Covered in tattoos, singing songs about drugs, drinking and heartache, Nate acts more like an out of control rock star than the grandson of one of the genres most influential and legendary stars. Every man wants to be him. Every woman wants just one night with the hard-rocking country rebel.
Except me. I just want to know that the boy I used to love is happy and that I didn’t break his heart in vain. That’s why I buy every magazine that even mentions his name; at least, that’s the story I tell myself.
When my friends gave me a birthday present any fan would die for, I was suddenly face-to-face with the man I never thought I’d see again. My body wasn’t supposed to react to him the way it did. And, Nate sure as hell wasn’t supposed to look at me the way he used to.
Can someone you loved as a teenager really have a hold on your heart twelve years later? Is it ever too late to say you’re sorry and make up for past wrongs? I’m about to find out.

Excerpt

I’d always planned to get the hell out of my hometown as soon as high school was over. Hell, once I hit tenth grade, I couldn’t pack my bags fast enough. I wanted nothing more than to see that shitty little town, and all of its residents, shrinking in my rearview mirror as soon as possible.

What I hadn’t planned on was having someone in my life who was so important that he made me question everything and wonder if I should stay. Or, that someone giving up everything so he didn’t have to leave me. I couldn’t let him do it, couldn’t let me be the thing that held him back, couldn’t let his love for me destroy his dreams. So, I did the only thing I could do; I wrecked it all.

For me, there was no simplicity of burning bridges. No, I strapped dynamite to every single one, blowing them into tiny smithereens. Then, I’d bulldozed each surviving piece into a pile, doused it with kerosene, and aimed a blow torch toward the debris, just to make sure there would be nothing left. As the flames roared to life, I danced around the blaze, drinking whiskey straight from the bottle, toasting the life I’d had, acting like a crazed woman performing a sacred ritual. As the last of the ashes drifted into the sky, fading from red hot into cold black, I sobbed, knowing there was no way I could ever undo the damage I’d just done.

It was stupid, dangerous, and devastating, but I needed to make sure every single relationship I had was destroyed. The only way I would be able to move on somewhere else was if there was no reason left for me to go back, and no way I could ever show my face there again, even if I’d wanted to. Unfortunately, I needed to hurt him, to decimate him, so he would hate me and could let me go and build a stronger life without me.

The one thing I never thought about, the one thing I hadn’t taken into consideration, was that most eighteen-year-old girls are idiots. They run on pure emotion, thinking with their heart, not their head. I’d thought I was so mature, that somehow I’d had all the answers and knew what was best for everyone, so I made their decisions for them. In reality, I was just a naïve small-town girl with more fashion sense than common sense – and looking back at the pictures proves I didn’t know fashion for shit. What seemed like the perfect idea all those years ago was now my biggest regret.

Excerpt

The group of girls that had been holding a vigil since the news broke Luke was quitting Five Guys was singing loudly and off key. In the past week they’d been camped out, they’d gone through Five Guys’ extensive song list. I wanted to shove extra thick cotton into my ears. Luke had almost called the cops but his manager had discouraged it. He said feeding the hungry vultures known as the media was just asking for trouble.

“You’re dead,” I reminded Luke gently. “Luke Anderson, the rock star is no longer alive.”

“That was never me. I was always just Luke. They chose to see me that way,” he said, referring to his fans.

“I know, but you built a brand.”

“I’m not a goddamn Pepsi can.”

“No, you’re handsome, brilliant, an amazing dad, and the proud owner of Norma Jean’s. That will all come to light eventually. Be patient.”

Luke dropped the curtain and faced me. Endless love shined in his gaze. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

Author Q&A

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

From my curiosity about what it’s like to be left behind when you’re spouse pursues their dreams.

Where do you find your inspiration?

The world around me, which is a cliché answer but it’s the truth. I love going on adventures and soaking in different cultures.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I don’t find the act itself hard but I do find the ability to sit down and focus to be a challenge on a daily basis.

What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on the next installment in the Love of a Rockstar series called Broken Lullabies. It’s about Matthew, the lead singer of Five Guys and Camilla.

Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and your most recent published work?

If I’m being honest, an improvement in the quality of writing is probably the most glaring difference between my first novel and my most recent published work. Practice makes perfect.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I want my readers to walk away with the notion that no matter how hard life is at the moment; a happy ever after is in arms reach.

Does music play any type of role in your writing?

It doesn’t. I’m easily distracted and have to have complete silence to write.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your life?

What’s that saying? Write what you know.

What books have influenced your life most?

The Weetzie Bat Books by Francesca Le Block sparked the creative juices and I haven’t been able to put down the pen since.

Are there any new authors that have grasp your interest?

Lily Paradis is relative newcomer to the scene and just released her second novel, Volition. Besides being a gifted writer, she is also talented at social media marketing. I have watched her gain readers by the trunkful over a short period of time. I could defiantly learn a thing or two from her.\

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I actually shared the first two chapters of Broken Lullabies at the end of To Cherish and To Hold.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you a million times over for loving my characters as much as I do.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?

You are more than welcome to stalk my social media pages where I post updates and sneak peeks of my latest WIP.

Do you have a special time to write? How is your day structured writing-wise?

I usually write in the mornings till late afternoon with intermittent breaks.

Why did you choose to write Contemporary Romance stories?

I wrote a plethora of different genres before I settled on Contemporary Romance. It’s simply what comes most naturally for me.

What is for you the perfect book hero?

My perfect book hero is complicated with tons of layers to peel back and reveal.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I have the basic plot line in my head but the characters form themselves.

When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing at such an early age that’s unclear why exactly I started. If I had to guess though, it was probably because I liked the fiction world better than reality. Always have.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I think the moment my short story won first prize in a literature contest. That’s when it dawned on me that I didn’t want writing to be a hobby. I wanted it to be a career.

List three books you have recently read and would recommend.

The Secret Place by Tana French

Chasing Me by Jennifer Probst

Becoming Rain by K.A Tucker

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.

I know how to do a headstand without falling on my ass.

Will you write more about these characters?

While Luke and Marlene’s story is over, they will make the occasional appearance in Broken Lullabies.

You don’t know when…

You don’t get to choose if…

When it’s time to join…you’ll know.

You might think you want to be a member—but trust me this is one club you don’t want to join. It’s not a place where people go to live out their deepest, darkest sexual desires—there are no handcuffs or blindfolds.

The 27 Club only admits those who die young and tragically. My brother was recently bestowed membership and joined many of our ancestors before him. I know I’m next. This is my destiny, and I was ready to yield.

But then I met Nate. He awakened a sensuality in me that had never been explored, never satisfied. I knew then I could no longer accept my destiny. Nate’s presence controls me. I’m overwhelmed by his touch, his words; my every thought is consumed by desire. I believe he was brought into my life for a reason.

Nate doesn’t believe in destiny.

But I do.

And if there’s a way to cheat it—I must.

Review

Dylan Thomas said it best ~

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Death is not a topic that too many people freely discuss. It’s morbid and scary. But it’s reality. Regardless of the fact that death will come for everyone at some point, it’s up to each and every person to decide what they are going to do with the time they are given, even if it’s way shorter than they were hoping.

Zoey Flowers and Nate Hanson, the main characters in Kim Karr’s newest release The 27 Club, may have different views on living and whether or not they believe in fate, but neither of them is truly living their lives to the fullest – both out of fear but for very different reasons.

Since she was young, Zoey’s believed in destiny, losing many family members as the years had gone by. But since her brother’s death at the young age of 27, she’s allowed fate to lead her into darkness and sadness, simply waiting for the same fate as many of her bloodline. For the past 27 years, she’s lived a tame life, meeting expectations in a boring and calm way. She wants a reason to move forward, but she won’t allow her uncertain future to ruin anyone else’s life. With extreme acquiescence, Zoey’s resolved herself of her fate, but while she waits, she wants Nate to show her how to be untamed and carefree because she’s never felt more alive than she has since meeting his brother’s best friend.

Nate Hanson’s life is one of control and work but not love or commitment. His path has been shaped by watching his father lose the love of his life and endure years of suffering. He refuses to walk that same route, so he keeps people at bay, never allowing anyone close until Zoey. Nate takes it upon himself to teach Zoey how to be wild and free, but in return, Zoey shows Nate what his life’s been missing; now, he just has to decide if he can see past his hang ups and change his destiny.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Fuck destiny! Fuck fear! Fight against it and win!

Regardless of if you believe in destiny/fate or not, The 27 Club sends a clear message about living life to the fullest and figuring out how to grab hold of the present by letting go of the past and not worrying about a future that may or may not occur.

Kim Karr’s newest release is a different kind of read, but it’s so worth the read because at the heart of the story is two people finally realizing how to live a life worth living!

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

My jaw practically hits the table.

The chocolate crêpe!

I can’t believe it.

Harnessing all of my willpower, I fight the sudden inclination I have to leap around the table and jump onto his lap. I always tell people I prefer dessert before a meal, but never has anyone taken me seriously.

Never.

Tension coils deep in my belly. Lust flows through my veins running faster and faster with each passing second. I look over at him and as soon as I see his face, I can feel myself coming unhinged. Urges I can’t deny surface. The need to know the taste of his lips, to feel his hard body,

to be able to lick the chocolate he just ordered off his chest, and to slide my tongue down his stomach so I can taste him.

Looking thoughtful, his return gaze slowly changes to one of concern. “Have you stopped planning for your future because you don’t think you have one?” he asks softly.

Remnants of our conversation must have been lingering in his mind. Slamming my eyes shut, all of the erotic images I had conjured up immediately disappear as I fight to breathe.

Suddenly the air becomes thick in my lungs and I can’t get it out. I take deep calming breaths. As the haze around me dissipates and I fight off the panic attack, I hear a fumbling in front of me. I force myself to lift my lids. Nate is attempting to open my clutch. “What are you doing?”

“Trying to get you your inhaler.” Panic seems to drown out the deep green of his eyes.

I push to my feet and give him a disbelieving look. “I’m not having an asthma attack.”

“You’re not?” He sounds uncertain.

Shaking my head, I set my napkin on the table. “Excuse me, I have to use the ladies room.” I walk inside the restaurant, realizing I have no idea where I’m going. Looking around, I find the bathrooms immediately.

Just as I pull the door open, a hand covers mine. “You’re upset.”

I drop my head. “No, I’m fine.”

Fierceness grips his voice. “You’re lying.”

Summoning all of my willpower, I raise my eyes.

Nate lifts my chin. “You didn’t let me finish. I’m trying to understand you. I want to know why, if you believe in destiny, you’d change your path. Why wouldn’t you do what you had always planned on doing? Why change your course? Personally, I think destiny is bullshit. I also think not pursuing your dream is bullshit too.”

Caged by his body, his scent, his presence, I look up into his burning eyes and I can see compassion there. I believe he wants what’s best for me. If I think I know him through my brother, he thinks he knows me through my brother as well. And Zach wanted me to continue my education. His dream was that someday I’d be Dr. Zoey Flowers. Nate knows this.

“Zoey?” Nate’s voice is questioning. Low. Maybe even slightly fearful.

“Nate”—I press my finger to his lips—“I think I need to tell you something about myself.”

“What?” he asks.

In all our e-mails after my brother’s death, I never mentioned the real reason for my delay in coming to Miami. I keep my eyes open even though I want to close them. “I had a breakdown shortly after Zach died. I took a leave from my job. I couldn’t get out of bed. I couldn’t plan one day, let alone the next. And somewhere during that time, I let any plans I had for the future fall to the wayside. I don’t know what I want anymore.”

Shock appears on his face. “Why didn’t you tell me in any of our e-mails?”

The truth is hard to admit. “I actually looked forward to your weekly e-mails. But I did lie to you. It wasn’t work that kept me from coming to get my brother’s things. It was me and my inability to cope.”

Nate stares down at me.

My entire focus is on him. “Don’t think I’m crazy. I’m not. Really, I’m not.”

His gaze continues to pin me in a way that makes me think he understands me.

It holds me in place. Keeps me calm.

“Zoey, God, I don’t think that at all,” he breathes. “I can understand how that would happen.

With everything coming at you at once, and the shock of Z’s death, coupled with the revelations about your family, it was just too much. I get it.”

I just stare at his lips, longing to kiss him. My body is filled with so many wants and needs, and all these new urges I’ve never felt before.

And all I want is just for him to set me free.

BLOG TOUR STOP: REVIEW, TEASERS, AND GIVEAWAY: #Player by Cambria Hebert

Player Blog Tour Banner
Title: #Player
Series: Hashtag Series
Author: Cambria Hebert
Genre: NA Contemp/College Romance
Release Date: March 9, 2015

Players gotta play.

Hate is like a poison. It contaminates everything.

So does doubt.

Even though I deny what I overheard, even though I insist it isn’t true, the seed of doubt has been planted. I can’t help but be tormented with the endless what-if’s that have taken over our lives.

Romeo and I were happy in love. The future stretched before us brighter than any star in the darkest sky. Now everything is broken. Literally broken. Romeo’s entire career is at stake, my entire future is threatened… and my past?

It’s coming back to haunt me.

To haunt us.

Romeo says we’re in this together and right now the only sure thing is us. But how far can a love so new be pushed? The lengths we will have to go to save each other puts everything at risk.

Romeo is a #player but how much of the game can one person play?

Review (1)

I have been eagerly awaiting #Player, book 3 in Cambria Hebert’s Hashtag series, especially with the ending of #Hater. Both Rimmel and Romeo have grown immensely throughout the first two books and have become a couple to be reckoned with, which is exactly the solidifying bond that they’re going to need to hold onto as they head into the high dramatics of a psycho stalker and whatever else Hebert throws their way.

#Player – the title itself has multiple meanings. It sheds light on Romeo’s old philandering playboy ways, and it also holds value in terms of his football career. But its true meaning, at least in my view, is the idea of someone who is constantly a work in progress – someone who is working towards something – always practicing and never giving up. If there’s one thing readers have learned about this power couple it’s that they’re fighters; they call their own shots, and they fight like hell when everything’s on the line, and that’s exactly where they find themselves in the conclusion of their story.

Rimmel has to be my favorite nerd ever because she’s so much more than that – she just needed the right person to get her out of her shell. Her intelligence is definitely a major part of her, but she’s also compassionate, strong, honorable, and she loves with ever part of herself. She’s been through hell and back, but she doesn’t allow it to define her. She has come a long way from the shy, lonely tutor girl that Romeo first met in book 1. She’s his lifeline…his everything…his biggest win, and she’ll never let him forget it.

Romeo – his growth over the series has been astounding. Cambria Hebert was spot on to give readers his point of view. His perspective helps us to understand him in so many ways that we would not get solely from Rimmel’s standpoint. He’s Rimmel’s one constant in the shitstorm that hits their lives in #Player. He’s a man who protects the woman he loves, and when his back’s against the wall, he only fights harder, working to get the result that he not only needs but that he demands of himself and those around him.

Hebert created a great college atmosphere as well as phenomenal main and secondary characters in this series, and I’m excited that she plans to continue it with Braedan’s book – big brother needs a reality check of the female persuasion, and if the female lead is who I think it is, he’s going to be in for a rude awakening.

This is definitely a series I would recommend one-clicking!

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

You can often find her running on the treadmill (she’d rather be eating a donut), painting her toenails (because she bites her fingernails), or walking her chorkie (the real boss of the house).

‘My inspiration for Retrace’

“I can’t put my finger on anything specific that inspired me to write RETRACE. It was more a blend of many things that eventually grew into a story about letting go and learning to love and accept. Some of the key elements that did inspire me though, were a few crazy, vivid dreams that eventually turned into scenes, music, a lot of music, and mainly the characters themselves. Reeves and Nia practically seized my mind to the point I couldn’t concentrate on anything else and just had to pour their story out of me. The book traces their hesitant journey into deep friendship that helps them cope with traumatic pasts, and gradually leads them to discover the path to heal and accept. As Nia and Reeves’ characters developed into people I believed my readers would feel strongly about, and connect with, in tandem the story took shape into an emotional ride with touches of angst, humor, suspense and a whole lot of steam…”

Excerpt

Chapter 1

JaxPresent

The engraved invitation I held was heavy in both my hand and my heart, but it confirmed I had the right address. I examined the church before me with a sigh.

It all came down to this.

Cars parked and people streamed inside. I hung back, leaning against a tree. I’d hoped I would catch a glimpse of her, but she must have gone inside before I got here. Everyone was dressed in their nicest clothing and chatted amongst themselves, enjoying the day that was sure to be filled with happiness and love.

Only my heart was being slowly ripped out of my chest.

People stopped filtering into the church—there was no time like the present. I slipped inside; maybe no one would notice me.

Excitement filled the interior, creating an almost audible hum. I went down a hallway to see if I could locate her. When I spotted women dressed in dark purple dresses, my heart sank. I had found her.

As the ladies talked and giggled, I pressed myself against the wall, praying they would be too caught up in their excitement to notice me. They walked right by me as though I were a decoration. When they were out of sight, I continued down the hall until I saw the sign on the door. Brides Room.

I’d known what to expect, but it didn’t help. I was devastated all over again.

This should have been our day. She should be getting ready to walk down the aisle to marry me. Not whomever had been holding her in his arms instead. If only I hadn’t been such a disaster, it could have been me.

I rapped on the door and looked up and down the hall to see if anyone would come and interrupt me.

“Come in,” she called from the other side of the door. My breath caught in my throat. It had been five years since I heard her voice. I closed my eyes and gave the knob a slow turn, opening the door just enough for me to slip inside.

My heart stopped and my lungs failed when my eyes fell on her. She was facing away from me, watching through a full length mirror. When she saw me, her eyes widened and she gasped. She wore a tiara on her head that caught the sunlight from the open window and a veil that fell down her back. Her long, red hair hung in curls. Her dress hugged her body in an amazing way and it was hard to look away. She was still as gorgeous as the day I last saw her. Her blue eyes still captivated me. It was like no time had passed and she was the same girl who stole my breath from the moment I first laid eyes on her in the diner.

If only I was strong enough back then to hold on to her.

“Jax,” she said, and turned to face me. Her hands flitted down her dress, smoothing the fabric. “What are you doing here?”

“I came for you,” I said, stepping closer to her. Her eyes filled with tears and she shook her head.

“You can’t be here. Not today.”

“Cassandra.” She winced when I said her full name. It felt wrong, too intimate to call her Cassandra after so many years apart. “Cassie, you can’t marry him.”

“You’ve been gone for years, Jax. Years. I’ve moved on.” She tried to sound convincing, but her voice wavered. That little bit of hesitance gave me the courage to tell her what I came to say.

“Please, please don’t do this.” I moved in closer until I could touch her. Running a finger down her arm, feeling her skin, the same electricity that was always between us sparked, and goose bumps popped up on her flesh. She closed her eyes as though she were in pain, yet her body swayed toward me. I took her face between my palms, running my thumbs over the soft skin of her cheeks until she looked up at me. Her eyes were full of regret and tears.

“I’m getting married today, Jax. You can’t be here.” She said the words, but her body pressed closer to mine until only a breath separated our lips. Her eyes seemed to plead for me to take her away and also to leave. She was torn, wanting me and pushing me away at the same time.

“You don’t have to get married. You could leave with me right now.”

“I can’t. My family is here and his family is here and I can’t just leave. What about Ben?”

Of course her first thought would be about her son. “We can leave through the back and I’ll call my sister. Ry won’t mind grabbing him and meeting us wherever we go.”

She closed her eyes again and tears leaked down her cheeks. I brushed them away with my thumbs. When she opened them, I could see the pain and uncertainty circling there. My eyes dropped to her lips and she parted them, pulling her full lower lip between her teeth. I met her gaze, where desire swirled with the uncertainty and pain.

That was all I needed. I closed the distance between our lips, and her eyes slid shut. A small sigh escaped her. I pressed my lips gently against hers, reveling in the warmth and the perfection of her mouth. She deepened the kiss, her tongue stroking against my lips until I opened them. Her hands slipped into my hair, holding on tightly, as though I would disappear. I held her face between my hands, not wanting to let her go, afraid of what would happen when this moment ended.

She moaned and pressed closer to me until her body was melded to mine. One of her hands dropped down and grabbed the waist of my jeans, pulling me to her. Her body still felt familiar as I slid one of my hands down her torso and gripped her waist. Our lips moved in a frenzy as we clambered to get closer to one another. The need for her was almost painful. It had been five years since I held her this way and tasted her. I wanted more. I wanted to devour her and make it so she wouldn’t want to leave. I knew, somewhere in my heart and mind, that once our lips separated, the moment would be over.

As her hands tore at my shirt, trying to get underneath it, someone knocked on the door.

“Cassie?” a woman called through the door. She pulled away from me and I felt the loss of her immediately. I wanted to pull her into my arms and convince her not to let this be the end.

It couldn’t end this way.

“Yeah?” Cassie answered, attempting to catch her breath. She took a few hesitant steps away from me, but her hands were still clenching my shirt, holding me.

“It’s time. Are you ready?”

“Yeah. Just—” she sighed, closing her eyes. “Just give me a minute, okay?”

“Sure. I’ll wait for you down the hall.”

“I’ll be there in a minute.” Cassie’s eyes were full of resignation. They locked on mine.

“Cassie, you don’t have to do this.”

“I can’t leave Nolan, Jax. I care about him.” She let go of my shirt and took a few steps away from me, then turned back to the mirror. She ran a finger under her eyes and around her lips, fixing her slightly smudged lipstick. When she was done she turned back to me and her eyes were no longer churning with emotion. She was surrounded by impenetrable walls. “You have to leave, Jax.”

Pain twisted my heart and my stomach dropped. “Please, Cassie. Just give me a chance.”

“You had your chance. You had years to come back and now it’s too late.”

I moved closer to her as pain made it hard to breathe. She held her hand up, stopping me. “I’m done, Jax. I’m getting married. You need to leave.”

“I love you,” I pleaded. I had to stop her from walking out the door and out on me. I felt her slipping through my fingers again, but this time I would fight for her. She gasped and her eyes widened briefly before she caught herself and her walls rose again.

“If you won’t leave, I will.” She walked to the door, her dress rustling with her movements. Before she opened the door, she bowed her head, her back still to me, and she rested her hand on the doorknob. “Goodbye, Jax.”

She opened the door and stepped out, leaving me behind.

I stood in the middle of the room, still feeling her skin under my fingers and her lips against mine. I replayed her voice over in my head, aching to have her come back, but I knew I had lost.

I had lost my reason.

Time lost meaning as I stood there, staring at the door and feeling the loss of her. Somehow, I found my way out of the room and then the church. Once I was in my truck, sadness overwhelmed me and I rested my head against the steering wheel. For the first time in years, I craved the oblivion alcohol gave me. Something, anything, to make this pain more bearable. But I had fought too hard for my sobriety to ruin it. Without hope, though, I wasn’t sure what the point was.

I put the car in gear and drove slowly away, but I was leaving a huge part of myself back in the church.
