Love of a Rockstar is a second chance romance story about Luke, a young guitarist, who gives up the love of his life and his unborn child to pursue a music career; it’s about a young man who doesn’t feel he deserves the happiness that Marlene gives him, so he leaves and destroys the woman who has always owned his heart.
Four years later, fate reunites Luke and Marlene. A young runaway helped to change Luke’s perspective on what matters most in life, so he’s back to prove to the woman he loves and the daughter he has never met that he can be the father and husband Marlene has always wanted him to be.
Since Luke left, Marlene has guarded her heart and has done her best to provide a stable home for her daughter Nil. Luke’s return threatens to turn her “safe” world upside down, and she’s not ready for the potential devastation that it could bring to not only her life but to her daughter’s life as well. But the heart wants what the heart wants and soon, Marlene finds her love for Luke resurfacing. But will Luke be able to prove to her in the 4 days he has with her that he’s worth another chance – that he won’t let her down a second time?
Love of a Rockstar is not your typical rocker book. It is not angst driven. The rocker’s lifestyle is hardly mentioned because the book is about getting one’s priorities in order and making amends for past misdeeds. The story focuses on the idea of putting family first, and it illustrates the need to sometimes look at one’s life and realize that what matters most are not fancy objects or prestigious careers – it’s people…family.
The premise of a redeemed rocker always makes for an interesting storyline, but, for me, there are gaps in the plot. At times, I felt like the storyline was rushed – the reunion seems too quick. The supporting characters’ acceptance of Luke so easily is a bit problematic given the past four years of Marlene’s life. It just seemed too easy all the way around. Marlene’s only actions that show her four years of suffering are the snide comments she makes in passing when Luke is trying to get back with her. There’s really no screaming or confrontations. Yes, she has her daughter to think about and Nil desperately wants her father, but Marlene gave in too quickly without a proper discussion of the past…Luke’s promises seemed empty, but Marlene was willing to believe them. I also wish the conclusion provided a bit more closure. I wanted to see Luke make good on his promises…I wanted to see Marlene living her dream as a baker. I wanted more of a hea.
Despite some problems, though, Nicole Simone’s debut novel definitely shows promise. Give it a try and see what you think.
