REVIEW
***Arc was provided by authors in exchange for an honest review***
In Bound, readers are introduced to a grief stricken Kate after the loss of her unborn child, and as she seeks comfort in a group of people who are all grieving, she meets the man who will fight to bring her out of the darkness, Jason “Ryke” Ryker. Due to his wife’s death, Ryker became closed off to love, only looking for warm bodies to share one night with, but all of that changes when he sees Kate. By the end of book one, Kate and Ryker are “bound together by the thread of grief, but it wasn’t just our mutual losses that united us. We’d survived them, found each other and discovered that sometimes, from darkness can come light.”
In Captive, Kate and Ryker have to fight to stay in the light when tragedy, depression, and fear take control. This book will take readers through the gamut of emotions. Kate will frustrate you and break your heart at the same time…for much of the book, fear has her in its vise, and it is unrelenting and uncaring, but she’s a fighter, and with Ryker’s strength and loyalty, she will break free, but it takes much of the book for that to happen.
Ryker was amazing in Bound, and he only gets better in Captive. His devotion to Kate is ever present despite his frustrations with her and the temptations that surround him on the road as a professional hockey player. Kate is IT for him, and he makes that exceedingly clear to anyone or anything that tries to break their bond.
What Kate and Ryker go through as a couple is extremely realistic, and the grief they experience is shared by so many people in society that this book will resonate with many readers. Brenda Rothert tells a great story about facing fears and fighting through them to live the life you were meant to lead. With the well developed storyline and complex characters, readers understand what it takes to overcome the darkness of depression when faced with constant adversity. Captive is a testament to the true meaning of marriage and family, and the idea that both take a lot of work to be successful, but if you are willing to put the effort in, the payoff is beyond measure.
Thank you, Brenda Rothert, for such a fantastic story with an ending that couldn’t have been written any better. I can’t wait for Luke’s story!
