My Review
One idea that I appreciate about the new releases from Smartypants Romance is the diversity of topics as well as the social issues/concerns that are not only alluded to but addressed in a way that allows for reader contemplation and discussion. And with Weight Expectations’ subject matter, readers will identify with the heroine and hope that the hero knows what’s important in a partner and is not simply attracted to surface level features.
Rian is a heroine who readers will connect with on a number of different levels; it was easy to relate to her struggles with weight, with self-worth, with the reasons she wants and maybe even needs things to change in her life, and I very much appreciated the way M.E. Carter crafted Rian’s personality and developed it over the course of the story.
I do have to admit that I struggled a bit with Carlos; it took me awhile to figure him out and to understand exactly how he viewed his life and what he truly wanted out of it. But once I wrapped my head around the kind of man he is and the fact that even though he may appear to have it all together with the way he carries himself, the flaws are there and are admitted to, at least on some level.
Like in the other stories I’ve read in the Pennyverse, the cameos by characters I’ve loved makes the story that much sweeter; these are characters I will never forget and would love catching up with them as much as possible, so the fact that readers get that throughout the new releases makes my love for all things Penny Reid even bigger.
