My Review

What I’ve always loved about Kylie Scott’s stories is that her heroines are everyday women – ones with curves, with insecurities, with intelligence, with backbones. They’re not fragile or withering flowers, and they refuse to change who they are for anyone, even if it’s the men who own their hearts.

And in Scott’s newest release, The Rich Boy, the female lead, Alice Lawrence, has all the characteristics I’ve come to love about the author’s leading ladies, and while Alice may be a little less driven than some and not have a true direction for where she wants her life to head, she still works hard to provide for herself and do the things she wants to, and at 22 years-old, she has time to decide and might as well live life as fully as she can.

Enter Beck – the new busboy where she waitresses – and let me tell you, the way these two meet and their instantaneous connection make it seem like they’re destined to be together, and Beck definitely agrees since he’s ready to start planning their wedding after only knowing each other for a few days, which may be a bit presumptuous but it sure is cute that he’s already imagining all the things he could have with Alice.

If Alice and Beck could have stayed in their California bubble, things would have proceeded at a quick pace because it’s more than clear that they want more from each other than just conversation and flirty interactions. But when Alice lands in Beck’s true ‘reality,’ the rules change…the environment changes…and Alice gets bombarded with all the ways she doesn’t fit into Beck’s Colorado lifestyle – one that is filled with large sums of money and affluent individuals who aren’t too keen on allowing an outsider and a nobody into their world.

Some readers might not appreciate just how slow the burn is of this story, but, to me, it fits the characters and the situation that they find themselves in when they get to Colorado. Alice is shell shocked when she learns just how different her life was/is compared to Beck’s most eligible bachelor and richest guy moniker in his hometown and state. And as both Alice and Beck try to work around the complications and the obstacles that are placed in front of them, they focus on what matters most, to them, and nobody else, and even if it’s easier said than done with what they’re facing, they’re willing to risk it all for a chance at what feels a lot like love.

My Review

I’m a huge fan of A.L. Jackson’s Bleeding Stars series; they’re some of my favorite Rock Star Romances, so the fact that Jackson returns to this setting in her new release, Kiss the Stars, felt like coming home again, catching up with old friends and making new ones along the way.

What I always find interesting about Jackson’s heroes and heroines are how the pairings, at first glance, don’t seem to make sense, partially due to the fact that they appear to come from two very different situations and perspectives and also because of the amount of work that they are putting in to heal themselves from a painful past of heartbreak and sorrow, which means that adding another person to the mix seems more detrimental than helpful. But as the characters’ personalities evolve and the time spent together helps to delve deeper into who they are and what they want and even need, it’s at that point when it becomes abundantly clear just how perfectly imperfect their connection is and how essential they become for one another’s growth and stability.

Mia West and Leif Godwin couldn’t be more different and their outlooks on life in general puts them on seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum. But Mia doesn’t give up easily and once she acknowledges the connection she feels to Leif, she does what she needs to in order to prove that he’s worthy of her regardless of his persistent feelings to the contrary. There’s a lot to sort through and work to be done for these two to make something long lasting, but Mia’s refusal to give up and Leif’s capitulation once he realizes just how deeply he feels for her and how full his life is with her in it, even the biggest obstacles and fears won’t prevent them from kissing the stars.

The best part about heading back to a much loved setting is that old characters stop by and readers get to catch up with everything that’s been happening in their lives since we left them to ride off into the sunset.

What I appreciate the most about A.L. Jackson’s characters and the way she crafts them is that they’re flawed and imperfect in ways that readers can relate to and while they may have endured painful pasts and they may still be fighting those demons, there’s always hope for redemption…hope for putting their respective pasts behind them and realizing that they are worthy of all the wonderful things that life offers.

And that’s what emotional romances do…they provide an opportunity for love, even when those involved don’t feel like they deserve it.

“Close your eyes.”

I slant a curious look at Gavin, taking in his kiss-swollen lips and flushed skin, his untamable mop of hair and the blaze of excitement lighting up the blue of his corneas.

Gavin squeezes my hand reassuringly as I do what he’s asked, then slowly walks me the remaining few steps toward our cave. Without vision, my other senses are heightened. The cry of birds sounds closer, like they are perched just overhead instead of on branches thirty or forty feet above. The bite of the breeze on my skin is sharper, each gust sending a chill racing along already sensitive nerve endings. The smell of ripe earth and rich evergreen and the clean, bracing scent of Gavin himself is downright intoxicating, my head swimming as I pull breaths deep into my lungs.

Most of all, the moonstone pendant laying against my collarbone is making my chest tingle, my heart fluttering against my ribcage.

“Okay, open them.”

I do, immediately gasping in surprise at what Gavin’s done to our little cave. There are candles burning and scattered rose petals—no, poppy petals—and a basket filled with drinks and snacks. A pile of blankets and pillows.

“You did all this for me?” I ask, my voice sounding whispery and weird.

I feel whispery and weird.

I’ve never had a birthday like this. I’ve never even imagined a birthday like this. First the necklace and now, seeing the lengths Gavin has gone for me…

Beneath the surface of my skin, I’m a chaotic mess of emotions. I don’t know what to say, how to act. This is uncharted territory for me.

“Of course,” he says, as if it’s nothing. But it’s not nothing. It’s everything.

Before I dissolve into a teary puddle, Gavin reaches into his pocket and pulls out a deck of cards. “You taught me how to play gin rummy—how about I teach you to play poker?”

About J. Sterling

My goal is to write books that you can get lost in and stories that will leave you with a smile and a full heart. If you can forget about the real world while you’re reading and fall in love with my characters, then I’ve done my job. A lot of what I write has real life aspects in it, but that’s what makes the stories so relatable- the fact that they could happen to anyone… and have!

I live in California with my son, Blake. If you can’t find me sitting behind a computer screen, then there’s a good chance I’m sitting in the bleachers of a baseball stadium watching him play. I love traveling to new places, meeting my readers and spending time with the love of my life, my very own second chance romance, who inspires me daily.
