I need somewhere to wipe my palms; but the puffy skirt of my designer gown doesn’t seem appropriate.

Five hundred pairs of eyes look my way as I sashay down the middle of the glass-ceilinged ballroom my father has decked out with nauseating arrays of flowers, of twinkling fairy lights and enough champagne to fill the San Francisco Bay that shimmers beyond the heights of our palatial hotel.

Really, that’s what it’s called: The Palatial Hotel. Because it’s like a damn palace built on the edge of the financial district, full of Austrian crystal chandeliers and Calacatta marble floors.

It’s unseasonably hot in San Francisco this year, especially since we’re in the middle of a heat wave. People in Southern California would probably laugh at us as they roast through their regular hundred-plus summer days, but in the North we’re a little more used to clouds and fog.

I could blame my sweaty palms on the heat wave, but it’s crisp and cold inside the hotel’s grand glass enclosure. Cold like a refrigerator. Like a morgue.

I take a deep breath and focus on my father’s booming voice, forgetting about the crowd of family and my father’s friends. Many of the men eyeing me off in the crowd find that staggering wealth extremely attractive.

Me, I learned a long time ago that money doesn’t mean much. Beyond granting you food, and shelter, and warmth, money doesn’t do much at all. It doesn’t hold you at night when your father is still working, always working. It doesn’t help you trust anybody who might be a romantic possibility.

Money doesn’t bring your mother back from the dead after she dies giving birth to your stillborn brother when you’re twelve years old. It doesn’t help you understand why your older sister drowned in your backyard when she was about to be married off, leaving you to inherit the burden of everything she was better equipped to handle than you will ever be.

Money: I’m about to have more of it than any of these greedy fucks could imagine.

And I don’t want it.

Not a nickel. Not a penny. Not a dirty dollar bill.

Carefully constructed words…intriguing storytelling…meticulous world building…authentic character development…these are all the things I adore about fictional stories, because even though the lives that are created come from an author’s mind, they become quite realistic, allowing readers to enter those texts and settle in for one heck of a wild ride.

Alessandra Torre’s newest release, Hidden Seams, embodies all of the qualities I’ve grown to love about romance stories. Its unique storyline, complex hero and heroine, and double-meaning title proves her ability to think outside the box and offer readers an insightful experience all within the pages of her book.   

The title itself forces readers to see beneath the fairytale lifestyle that Marco Lent has led for the past decade with his partner, infamous fashion designer, Vince Horace. Because while Vince is out and proud as a gay man, few people see the reality of their situation because Marco and Vince are experts at concealing the truth…experts at building their brand and their reputation while also hiding behind their label and how it’s presented and represented.

Marco and Vince are a united front, but Marco, the man, is a fraud and now that the fashion world has lost an icon…lost one of its kings, the man who has lived a double-life for 10 years – one that now seems unwarranted – is left wondering where his place is in his own life because he truly hasn’t been his own man since he agreed to Vince’s proposition and became a cover, a kind of beard if you would, for a man who Marco saw as a friend, a father-figure, and a mentor, but keeping up the facade becomes a lot more difficult when a certain woman enters Marco’s world and threatens to burn it to the ground, not necessarily due to her actions but more so due to an electric connection that neither can deny.

If readers have read many of Torre’s stories, they’ll know that she doesn’t usually write the male perspective, but Marco’s point of view is essential to the story line; he’s the only person who can truly shed light on Vince’s choices…he’s the only one who truly saw the man beneath the fashion icon…he’s the only one who knew their truth, and he’s still fighting to protect it, even though the cover is a bit too much for him to bear now that Vince passed away.

Readers need to hear his side of things…need to understand why Marco became Vince’s dutiful partner because even though Marco can dress it up any way he likes…rationalize that it was all done for Vince’s legacy…for his brand…for his empire…it still doesn’t help him in working out where he goes from here now that he’s the only king of the Horace brand.

Avery McKenna is an intriguing heroine; she’s independent, feisty, and not afraid to take risks, even when they could hurt her. Her back story illustrates a girl who

couldn’t fit into her old life, simply because that wasn’t the path she wanted to follow… she didn’t want to live that way…she wanted to make her own path…carry her own weight and in a place like Detroit, she’s done an amazing job in proving her intelligence and her worth, but not even Avery could navigate amongst the fashion elite, so even though she believes that’s where she needs to go for answers, it doesn’t mean she’ll make the correct choices, especially when it comes to a certain fashion designer and a desire fueled on lust and perhaps even love.

Hidden Seams is definitely both Marco and Avery’s story, so hearing both of their sides is paramount to understand the plot line and to build a bridge between their two drastically different lifestyles. Torre smoothly intersects Marco and Avery’s lives and quickly shatters the facade that Marco’s been living for 10 years, but what that means for Marco’s inheritance and where Avery fits in the hidden seams of his life can only be figured out by watching their story play out and willing their truths to be exposed and all I have to say is I enjoyed every delicious and devastating minute!

And, man oh man how he blows Nat Rossi’s mind AND body AND soul! But what he also unknowingly blows apart is Nat’s heart because when it comes to sex and love, it’s impossible for a girl like Nat to not fall for a guy like Hunter – one who, on the surface, is a persistent flirt…an intelligent wiseass – but he’s also a man who is beautiful, inside and out, which is why the NOT LOVE part is so difficult for Nat to maintain…and I can’t say that I blame her in the least.

For much of Hunter and Nat’s story, they dance around each other, creating quite the ‘will they or won’t they’ conundrum; every time Hunter reenters Nat’s life, he’s slowly wearing her down, making her resistance futile and their intimate time together inevitable.

But despite Hunter and Nat’s insane chemistry and how much they desire each other on a carnal level, there are variables at play that make anything more between them but hot sex impossible, and it’s those obstacles that drive up the angst factor in their story and the main reason I read this book in one setting; I NEEDED to put all of the puzzle pieces of Hunter’s backstory together because, like Nat acknowledged, it’s clear pretty early on that Hunter feels more than just lust for her but holds himself back from making any commitment or giving Nat any expectations other than what she can expect from a sexual relationship with him.

And boy does Vi Keeland make readers and Nat wait for those answers, but once they’re revealed, the picture clears and the only thing left to figure out is if there’s any hope for Hunter and Nat’s ‘sex, not love’ relationship to turn into something more…something that they both seem to want.

I really enjoyed Hunter and Nat’s story; Hunter is a fantastic hero – one with many layers that are developed as the book continues. There are specific reasons he chooses to live his life the way he does and the way Keeland explores those ideas helps readers to understand his side of things, even if we do still want to shake him.

I loved Nat; she’s a woman who has been through so much but who relentlessly works to make her life better and to protect her ex’s teenager daughter at all costs. Nat’s fears of getting her heart broken again and her leeriness of men make perfect sense due to the men in her life who let her down time and time again. She doesn’t want to fall for Hunter but there’s no stopping it once she gets to know the man behind the perverted comments and unwavering confidence.

Sex, Not Love is another great text from the creative mind of Vi Keeland, and I can’t wait to meet her next couple!
