Synopsis

When I was nineteen years old, I was faced with a choice that changed my life.

Keep the safety of what I already knew or risk losing everything with the young, hotheaded soldier who stole my heart.

I chose the wrong man, and for seventeen years, I paid in tears, blood, and shattered dreams for that decision.

Now, there’s a man in my house, holding a gun to my head on the order of my ex-husband—given from his prison cell.

That hotheaded soldier I was too afraid to choose? He’s now a six-foot-three wall of muscle who works at the country’s most premier bodyguard agency. I’ve always wanted him, but now, I’ve never needed him more.

It’s the call I’m terrified to make.

I’m sure he still hates me… Even though I’ve never stopped loving him.

Review

Thrive is defined as one’s ability to prosper; to be fortunate or successful. 2. to grow or develop vigorously; to flourish

Any way one looks at the word, whether its denotative or its connotative meanings, it’s clear that if one’s life ‘flourishes’ then s/he is leading a good life…one filled with positivity and success.

Based on this definition, it would seem that the hero and heroine in Aly Martinez’s newest release would live charmed lives, reaping the benefits of a fortunate life and reveling in all the happiness that has come their way.

And that kind of life might have happened…and perhaps in some ways both Mira and Lark did have times of joy and prosperity, but overall, especially in regards to Mira’s life and circumstances, thriving would not be the word to describe all that’s happened in the 17 years that these two have been apart, all because of Mira’s decision when they were both young and naive.

Based on how both Mira and Lark are described as well as how they react and what actions they take when Mira returns, some readers, understandably, will not know how to feel about the hero and heroine of Thrive. Miscommunication between them seems to be the leading cause of their separation all those years ago, and while a certain amount of it makes sense, the fact that the path of their lives was irrevocably changed due to their inability to honestly communicate is frustrating to witness, especially because of the damage it has caused.

The cause of Mira and Lark’s reunion is where the series’ title, Guardian Protection, comes into play, and while the danger Mira’s in and the extenuating circumstances and outside forces that she and Lark have to contend with definitely play a role in whether or not the love these two feel for each other stands a second chance, the couple also needs to deal with the past and what forced them to spend 17 years apart and be with other people while their hearts were still with each other all along.

I definitely enjoyed the wild ride Aly Martinez took me on in Thrive. Mira and Lark’s story has suspense, drama, steam, and a whole lot of heart, and while I found some of the hero and heroine’s actions and reactions problematic, I still eagerly waited for them to figure out their shit, put the past behind them, deal with the current drama, and be together like they were supposed to be from when they were teens.

REVIEW TOUR: BAD FOR YOU by J. Daniels

“If you’re a fan of Kristen Ashley, then you will love this book.”

-Aestas Book Blog on Four Letter Word

He didn’t want to be bad. He just didn’t have a choice…

Shayla Perkins isn’t the kind of girl who makes the same mistake twice, especially when it comes to Sean “Stitch” Molina. So when he gives her the world’s biggest rejection, that’s it–she’s done. Until the sexy, silent, unavailable Sean makes Shay a very personal offer. Of course, it still doesn’t mean he’s interested in her. Or does it?

Sean has done things in life. Bad things. And he’s paid the price. All he wants now is to make up for his past by doing good in the present. And no one deserves more good than Shay. Beautiful on the inside and out, Shay is the kind of woman who should be cared for and protected–especially from a man like Sean. He’s tried to keep his feelings for her in check, but a single, reckless impulse pulls them closer than ever before.

Soon the two are sharing their biggest dreams and satisfying their deepest desires. But what will happen if the only way to truly give each other what they want most…is to let each other go?

“The perfect mix of funny, hot and heartwarming. I enjoyed it immensely!”

–Mia Sheridan, New York Times bestselling author, on Four Letter Word

Review

Imagine being led to believe at a young age that you are nothing…

Imagine that the one person who’s supposed to love you and take care of you tells you that you’re a waste of space…

Imagine not knowing what love felt like since your were a child…not understanding why your basic needs aren’t being met…

Imagine being told you’re nothing special…that you’re garbage and don’t deserve anything….

Imagine having no other choice but to fend for yourself by any means necessary….

What choices would you make? How would you feel about yourself? How impossible would it be to feel like you deserved anything when all you’ve ever had is someone else’s voice inside your head constantly telling you that you’re trash…that you’re a waste of space.

That’s how Sean ‘Stitch’ Molina started his life…that’s how he was taught to think of himself…that was what was ingrained in his mind when he left to try and make it on his own…and now, even at the age of 29, that’s still how he feels about himself and no one has been able to replace that demonic voice in his head…the words that are on repeat inside his psyche and have attached themselves to his soul.

The power of words, especially when they’re the wrong ones…the hateful ones…the hurtful ones…the punishing ones…their staying power only intensifies…their wounds dig deep and leave scars that never erase…not with time…not with other words…the only way the old words become powerless is if new ones penetrate them and create a new state of being…a new way of thinking…but it’s not easy; in fact, most of the time, it never works…but none of them has what Sean has…a certain pixie girl who refuses to not get through to him…he talks louder and maybe more than necessary because she has seen Sean’s worth since their first encounter.

I’ve always adored J. Daniels’ words and characters, but there’s something extra special about Bad For You as well as Sean Molina and Shayla Perkins. Their story is raw…it’s heartbreaking and heart mending…it’s a realistic presentation of someone who feels he deserves nothing and the woman who’s willing to give him everything because that is what he ultimately deserves.

It’s not easy to hear/witness Sean’s hateful words about himself; in fact, it made my heart ache and it made me wonder what it was going to take to get him to see himself as worthy of his kids and Shay.

Sean is living proof that one’s circumstances define him…that they mold him and attach themselves to him, refusing to let go, especially when faced with someone who could force him to see that he doesn’t have to be a victim of his upbringing. The hold that the words of the woman who gave birth to him have over him is daunting and they taunt him endlessly, especially when he’s by himself and there’s no other voice to shield him from their mistreatment.

But as Sean and Shay’s story progresses, her voice…her comforting and encouraging words start to penetrate the thick barrier around Sean’s enemy, and while it takes time to surround that hateful vocabulary, Shay’s at Sean’s back cheering him on and proving that she’ll always be there to tell him and show him just how worthy he is.

I don’t think I can clearly express how amazing Shay is…she’s this little ball of energy and she’s only 23 years old, but she brings so much light to everyone who crosses her path. She’s a fighter…a go-getter, which is exactly the type of person Sean needs in his corner and let me tell you, she is most definitely on his side and willing to go above and beyond to rid him of the darkness that has infected him and to fill him with all of the goodness that he’s always deserved but never received.

Nobody but Shay could get through to Sean, and while it took him quite awhile to believe her words instead of the ones that he’s always listened to, Shay is bound and determined that he will get there and when he does, his past will no longer hold him down and terrorize him with cruelty and hate.

I can’t say enough about this story…it’s an agonizing journey…there were plenty of tears shed, but I’m so glad that I was able to witness Sean’s rebirth…Sean’s acknowledgement that he means something to people…that the love they feel for him is real…that he is deserving of every wonderful moment with his girls and every one of Shay’s bright and loving touches.

J. Daniels has definitely created two of my top favorite characters and Sean and Shay together are one hell of an amazing couple.

RELEASE DAY LAUNCH: RESPECT by Aleatha Romig

Respect – An Infidelity Stand-alone Novel

“The making of a man”

From New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a stand-alone novel, a spin-off from her beloved Infidelity series. With classic Aleatha Romig twists, turns, deceptions, and devotions, this new epic mafia love story/ thriller will delve into a world where family takes on new meaning, and even the inhabitants are suspicious of the next chapter.

“Standing at what I believe is the precipice of my life, I, Oren Demetri, was too young to understand that it wasn’t and too old to imagine that it couldn’t be.

The already hefty accumulation of my successes and failures, bravery and fears, and rewards and suffering, had brought me to this point. It was hard to contemplate the things I’d done, and yet in reality, I’d only begun to learn the possibilities.

I suppose that’s how it was for me at twenty-nine years of age on the brink of all I’d ever wanted without fully realizing the price I would pay. Yet in that moment, I knew there would be no cost too great or sacrifice I wouldn’t make. I had no idea how far-reaching that moment of self-discovery would be because as the congregation’s murmurs quieted, bleeding into silence and allowing the thump of my heart to be the only sound I heard, I was a man filled with love and adoration, emotions in stark contrast to those I needed in the world I’d built or the one I was about to enter.

Angelina Costello was my dream and now my reality. I’d worked diligently to move beyond the actuality of being a dockworker’s son to becoming a self-made, successful entrepreneur, all in an effort to earn the right to call her my own. I’d overcome servitude to others, collecting their paychecks and lowly praises, to become the one who signed the paychecks and offered the accolades when they were rightfully earned.

The world was my oyster and walking toward me on the arm of her uncle was my pearl. I’d found her amongst the empty shells life had offered. There was no need to pry open another possibility. Angelina was all I wanted. Yet my path was uncharted. There was more for me to earn, lose, and willingly give.

The top of that list was respect.”

This stand-alone novel may be read before or after reading the Infidelity series or on its own.

Review

Olivia Barton and her hired guide/protector, Thomas, couldn’t be more different…at least that’s his initial perception when it comes to the woman he’s agreed to take into the ruined and dangerous parts of Colombia. But first impressions tend to be wrong…or at least skewed and so as these two strangers spend copious amounts of time together alone and off the grid, both Olivia and Thomas realize that there’s more to the other than what their appearances say.

Olivia may come from money, but it’s clear that it doesn’t define her. All of her life, she has felt unimportant to the people who she was supposed to matter most to, and for that very reason, she needs answers from Alec, the man she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life with…she needs to understand his disappearance and the reasons her private investigator found him in Colombia

But while Olivia seeks those answers, she also finds herself seeking something else…something she can’t quite describe because she’s never felt the way she does in Thomas’ presence before, and while she’s looking for the man she was supposed to marry, she’s finding herself attracted to a man who clearly lives in the shadows…one who has a certain set of principles that Olivia may not like or even understand and while that scares her…more than anything, it makes exploring these newfound feelings almost essential because in the midst of their unknown and dangerous adventure, a spark has ignited between them and regardless of the mitigating factors of their journey, it won’t be denied, no matter what they don’t know about each other or what Thomas’ end game seems to be.

Seek is the perfect title for Olivia and Thomas’ story, and even though the title points to the specific task of finding Livvy’s ex-fiance, its meaning moves far beyond that surface level idea and speaks to even more complicated situations, namely seeking the truth amidst the lies…finding the strength within despite the fear…learning that sometimes hurting others is for the greater good.

Thomas is definitely a man of mystery, so it was nice getting his perceptive as his and Olivia’s journey takes them further into darkness and danger. He has his reasons for holding back from her, and it’s clear that there’s more to Thomas’ job as Olivia’s guide, but that information doesn’t come until the end of their trip, which means that readers and Olivia don’t learn the truth until things have already progressed too far and new realizations have been made.

One thing I particularly appreciated was the way Olivia accepted or maybe the better word is understood Thomas’ vigilante justice…there is always a gray area when it comes to right/wrong…good/bad and it’s that middle ground that Thomas finds himself on many occasions and while doing things for the greater good may be a necessary evil, he also makes those decisions keeping in mind that sometimes, the innocent may be worth protecting as well when it comes to the big picture, not only for the world but for Thomas himself.

I love and appreciate the fact that Mia Sheridan went outside of her comfort zone for her newest release. There’s a certain risk to venturing out of the norm, especially when it comes to romance writers, but she definitely proved her versatility in this steamy, suspenseful, and adventurous tale, and I, for one, would follow Ms. Sheridan into any genre or trope because it’s her writing and storytelling that always brings me back.

RELEASE REVIEW: Ryan’s Bed by Tijan

Summary

I crawled into Ryan Jensen’s bed that first night by accident.

I barely knew him. I thought it was his sister’s bed—her room. It took seconds to realize my error, and I should’ve left…

I didn’t.

I didn’t jump out.

I didn’t get embarrassed.

I relaxed.

And that night, in that moment, it was the only thing I craved.

I asked to stay. He let me, and I slept.

The truth? I never wanted to leave his bed. If I could’ve stayed forever, I would have.

He became my sanctuary.

Because—four hours earlier—my twin sister killed herself.

Review

There are a couple of reasons why I didn’t hesitate to request an ARC for Tijan’s newest release, Ryan’s Bed, even though I knew it would be a difficult read for me. The subject matter is apt due to what’s happening with the youth of today, and because I’m a high school teacher, I have firsthand experience with what a teenage suicide does to those who s/he leaves behind. In my 18 years of teaching, there have been several students’ deaths in my tenure, but out of all of them, there are two individuals who took their own lives who I was close to and had to witness as well as endure what these two young men’s deaths did to their friends, their parents, and their peers. I don’t think there is anything more difficult in my profession than feeling helpless as students you have grown to care for are left with a mountain of unanswered questions and overwhelming grief because they wished they could have prevented it from happening.

I knew, before I even started Mackenzie’s story, that it would be an emotionally driven story line, not so much angst, but an abundance of over-the-top teenage feelings that none of them would know what to do with…how to channel the pain and anger…how to move forward when everything stopped being what they had grown to expect from their lives when the news was delivered. While this is wholeheartedly Mackenzie’s journey…she’s not alone in her conflicted feelings or the numbness that seems to consume her every minute of every day, except, perhaps, when she’s in Ryan’s bed. Mackenzie’s experiences are ones that readers who have dealt with similar situations can relate to, and while some readers might find her reactions and actions as exaggerated and a bit unrealistic, they would do well to remember what it was like to be a teenage girl and how everything went from one extreme to the next…there was never a middle ground, especially for the things that truly mattered…or at least the ones they thought mattered the most.

Ryan’s Bed is not so much a coming of age story; it’s more Mackenzie’s journey through the stages of grief and how she handles each one and those who try to help her as she stutters, stalls, and stops moving forward in hopes that her present reality is nothing but her worst nightmare. There is no right or wrong reaction to a tragedy of this kind and the lessons from such an occurrence won’t be learned for quite some time, so because readers are experiencing Ryan’s Bed only four hours after Mackenzie’s twin sister committed suicide, the extreme rawness and extraordinary feelings of anguish are apt and speak to the mind frame that Mackenzie is in as she tries to cope with a loss that no one should have to endure.

Tijan’s title choice is an interesting one, at least in my opinion, because while Ryan Jensen plays a pivotal role in Mackenzie’s story, he’s not necessarily the hero nor is he Mackenzie’s focus as the book continues. Don’t get me wrong, Ryan is essential in helping her work herself out of the darkness that consumes her and what develops between them is something that she uses as a lifeline. He’s her anchor when she feels like drowning and he’s her mender when she doesn’t think the broken pieces of her heart and soul can be repaired, but the first steps of healing and making herself somewhat whole again has to come from within. Mackenzie has to be able to save herself before anyone else can help her along. Ryan’s bed is a safe haven for Mackenzie; it’s the place she can go to rest her mind and take enough calming breaths to make it through each day and while those things seem insurmountable at the beginning, it’s quite inspiring to witness her fight through the hellish ordeal she finds herself in due to someone else’s choices.

Tijan takes the sensitive issue of suicide and speaks for the survivors…speaks for the people left behind, and as she gives them a voice, she works hard to provide a realistic experience, which she definitely accomplishes and while some readers might be turned off by how over the top they feel some situations were handled or how some reactions were portrayed, I can honestly say that because I witness how the teenage mind works day in and day out in a school setting, no one can say what depictions are real or fabricated because every single teenager reacts differently regardless of the situation.

Tijan definitely did Mackenzie’s story justice and perhaps in doing so allowed young adults to cope within the pages and the words of Ryan’s Bed.

Review

Fake relationship√

Inheritance on the line√

Insane attraction and chemistry between hero/heroine√

I’ve learned after reading my fair share of romantic comedies that when the above three circumstances mix together, it’s anybody’s guess how everything is going to play out, but one thing is for sure, by the time the story is over, readers will be thoroughly spent giggling, swooning, and shaking their heads at the antics of both the hero and the heroine and what develops out of their ‘all for show’ romance.

Max Carlisle is the ultimate billionaire bachelor, but it’s a title he doesn’t really covet; his passions and his family’s legacy are what mean the most to him, and while his swagger and cockiness is on point, what I loved most about Max was that once Hallie worked herself past his defenses and allowed her to see the ‘real’ man beneath the billionaire, that’s the man who I knew was a perfect match for the witty and beautiful photographer.

The plot is a bit chaotic, but that’s what happens when the end prize is life changing and the hunt they go on proves more dubious than it appears, but while Max and Hallie’s journey, at first, is a means to an end, it’s clear that with each new obstacle they face, their partnership becomes more about their feelings for each other than what treasures they’ll find as they continue their quest because it’s clear that the ultimate riches don’t come in material form but more like a beating heart that’s ready for love.

Very Irresistible Playboy by Lila Monroe is a highly entertaining romantic comedy told in dual point of view, which works well because the readers get to see where Max and Hallie’s thoughts and feelings are at the beginning of their ruse and how they transform into something neither of them ever expected upon their initial encounter.

“I think we should establish some ground rules,” I announce, as we drive along the curving ocean road. Palm trees are swaying, the ocean is glittering aquamarine blue, and it’s all so gorgeous and romantic, I need to cling to some semblance of professionalism.

Max groans. “Do we have to?”

“Yes,” I say firmly. “We’re pretending to be in a relationship, so things could get . . .”

Hot . . . Tempting . . .

“Complicated,” I finally decide.

“OK.” Max sounds amused. “What did you have in mind?”

“No touching below the waist,” I say. “No PDA except holding hands and quick kisses. No tongue. And no talking about our imaginary sex life.”

I’m a little too hot and bothered just imagining we have an imaginary sex life.

“Fine.” Max grins. “I promise not to ravish you in front of my entire family.”

Welcome to the blog tour for The Bitterroot Inn by Devney Perry!

Be sure to grab your copy & check out my review below!

Title: The Bitterroot Inn

Author: Devney Perry

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About The Bitterroot Inn

Her past. His secrets. They have more in common than she knows.

Maisy is happily content with the life she’s built for herself and her young son in small-town Prescott, Montana. Her child is thriving, her business is growing, and her family is as close as they’ve ever been. But when a handsome stranger walks into the lobby of her motel, her simple life is swept up in a wave of affection for his gentle heart. None of those feelings can be trusted, though. She made that mistake before with another man. The man she murdered.

Hunter was a different man when he first saw Maisy Holt from afar. He took one look at her and ran in the opposite direction. But years later, he’s back in Montana and unable to keep his distance. He shouldn’t have tried to find her but he never was good at rejecting temptation. The promise of the good she could bring into his life is too hard to resist. Maybe if he can disguise the lies and hide the deceit, he can keep her from learning the truth. Because his only chance at a future with her is by burying his past.

Review

Hunter Faraday has made it his mission to protect Maisy Holt since he understood the type of woman/person she was from one overheard conversation, and even though he’s supposed to keep his distance, like he did three and a half years ago,  he’s drawn to her beauty, her warmth, and her strength in a way that prevents him from not making her and her son, Coby, a part of his life…perhaps even the main focus.

But Hunter is a man of mystery and he feels his secrets are best left buried until he can prove to Maisy just how good things can be between them, and while Hunter’s one word answers and brush-off responses leave Maisy confused and a bit scared due to what happened with Everett and the secret life he led, Maisy can’t help but want to put an end to her loneliness and feel strong enough to open her heart again; this time to a man who seems to adore her and her son and who makes her yearn for a relationship and a life that she never thought possible after the hell she endured at the hands of a man she once loved.

Maisy is an extraordinary woman who has kept a positive attitude and an open mind despite the difficulties she has faced. There aren’t many women who could keep moving forward after what she went through at the hands of a monster and while she’s still dealing with the aftermath of an horrific situation, she never lets her son see her struggles and she makes sure that her anxieties, her fears, and her stressors do not control her every aspect of her life because letting a psychotic man take any more of her life away from her is unacceptable.

It was clear from the start that there was a reason as to why Hunter felt he needed to protect a woman he didn’t know and hadn’t ever talked to before, and as the story continued, my need to understand his connection to Maisy as well as why he refuses to divulge his past even if it means that he’ll lose the two people who have come to mean everything to him only intensified.

Hunter is a tough hero to truly figure out. There’s a reason for every one of his actions, but getting to the point where he voices those motives is a bit frustrating for everyone involved, especially Maisy, and even though he and Maisy form a pretty solid connection, starting off slowly and then progressing to something that they are both desperate for, I was always waiting for the aftermath of the revelations that he was so desperate to keep hidden until he felt it was the right time because whatever that information was, I knew it had the chance to destroy absolutely everything between Hunter and Maisy.

The way that Devney Perry lays the groundwork for the big reveal keeps readers invested every step of the way, allowing us to construct our own theories and see how close we are to the truth, and while Hunter’s ties to Maisy are deeper than I thought, once all of Hunter’s secrets are revealed and the fallout occurs, it’s interesting to look back and see the ways in which Perry set Hunter and Maisy on a path that only led them in one direction with the ultimate goal being a partnership that allowed them both to truly live in the present instead of constantly dealing with the past.

But the road Hunter and Maisy take to get to a place that ultimately provides them with everything they’ve always wanted is one filled with life-altering secrets, torturous nightmares, and deep-rooted fears that are difficult to see past and when Perry adds more chaos and difficulties to an already precarious situation, there’s no telling how the characters are going to react or have to deal with until everything plays out and let me tell you, there’s definitely a lot to sort through by the time Maisy knows everything there is to know about Hunter Faraday.

It’s truly been a pleasure to visit Devney Perry’s small Montana town; each story used the setting as a character in its plot line and it provided Perry and her characters with limitless possibilities. Perry’s Jamison Valley series may have reached its conclusion, forcing readers to say goodbye to characters and a place that they’ve grown to love, but it’s also allowed us to start a new adventure with Perry and to be introduced to a new cast of characters and a new location that I’m sure will be every bit as intriguing and complex as the series that allowed readers to see what a gift Perry has for story telling and just how enjoyable it is to enter her world and become an honorary member of it.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Sky’s the Limit by Elle Aycart

#NewRelease #SkysTheLimit #ElleAycart #DoomsdayPreppers #OneClickIt

iBooks : smarturl.it/SkystheLimitEA

Amazon : smarturl.it/SkysTheLimitAycart

Kobo : http://bit.ly/2lumw5J

Goodreads : http://bit.ly/2z1jLQn

Tired of waiting for her big break in the fashion industry, Sky Gonzalez, eternal part-time student and overworked retail drone, quits her job, sublets her New York apartment, and embarks on a semester abroad study program in Paris. Paris! Time to throw caution to the winds and jump-start her dreams. What’s the worst that could happen?

How about getting sent to the wrong Paris? As in Paris-frigging-Minnesota?

Bye-bye career dreams. Bye-bye glamour and haute couture. Hello flannel shirts, mind-numbing cold, zero bars on the cell phone, and socially challenged mountain men with tons of unruly facial hair.

So yeah, let the truck barreling her way hit her, please. Less painful.

Logan should have dodged the little lost waif and kept on driving. Who in their right mind walked in the middle of the road, dressed in white from head to high heels, during a snowstorm? Clueless city girls, that’s who. Sky is all that Logan has gladly left behind: stylish, cosmopolitan, and a massive pain in the butt. He wouldn’t trade a single day in his quirky little corner of the woods for all the high-maintenance beauties the city can offer.

Too bad this beauty has been deemed a health hazard and quarantined in his house. Damn his doomsday-prepper neighbors and their paranoid emergency protocols. Now  he has to keep Sky in and the pandemic squad out until the roads are clear. The question is, will that happen before or after Sky realizes she’s under house arrest?

Ah, the best-laid plans…

Review

I can honestly say that I never thought I would find myself surrounded by a community of Doomsday Preppers, and even though it’s only in a fictional sense, as big city girl, Sky Gonzalez, maneuvers her way through a crash course in survival and a pandemic squad whose unannounced drills and game plan don’t quite play into Sky’s fashion sense and beauty regiment, I found myself giggling at the absurdity of the situation but also understanding how the idiosyncrasies and crazy standards of the inhabitants of No Name, Minnesota, can make a woman like Sky – one whose appearance seems to mean EVERYTHING to her – reevaluate her life choices and reconsider high society/big city’s fakery as well as what’s important in the grand scheme of things when one never knows when the world might end;)

Logan Nolting is one FINE mountain man. He’s a nerdy, socially challenged chemist who is all about developing practices that are environmentally friendly, and while for the life of me I can’t understand how and why he puts up with this kooky mix of survivalists, he seems to fit in better than he think he does, handling everything the pandemic squad throws at him and doing what he can to not pose a security threat to this motley crew of doomsdayers.

What I love most about Sky is that she’s not the woman her appearance and lifestyle depict her to be; in fact, Sky proves rather quickly that the woman Logan’s pegged as is only partly true because while she does love fashion, brand names, and beauty products, she can make do and think on the fly, which is way more than his ex ever could do.

Elle Aycart really stepped outside of the box for her newest release, and I’m so glad she did! The setting and characters that Aycart introduced readers to are definitely eccentric and over the top when it comes to their end of the world practices, but the people of No Name, Minnesota, are actually happier and more alive than most city dwellers who lavish themselves with an extravagant and materialistic lifestyle.

Sky’s the Limit is a great introduction to Aycart’s Doomsday Preppers series; the groundwork was quite extensive in book one when it comes to building this world where all escape plans are created, explored, and firmly established making survival possible even in the worst of end days’ possibilities like a Zombie Apocalypse. As Sky is introduced into this prepper lifestyle and required to conform to their standards and run their required drills, readers are also given a crash course into what it takes to survive, and while I can’t say that I would want to live in such an environment, it makes sense that someone like Sky…the woman she becomes by being around the No Name residents and Logan…definitely

Even though Sky and Logan’s story felt a bit too long and a tad slow at the beginning, I really enjoyed meeting Aycart’s new cast of characters and I can’t wait to see whose stories she’ll make a part of this new series.

Logan addressed the pandemic squad up on the platform. “Sorry to break it to you. This is a free country. You can’t go quarantining people at will.”

“Wrong. Exactly because this is a free country, we can.”

There were some mumbles of agreement from the crowd, “That’s right” and “You got it” and “Try to stop us.”

“We live in a democracy. Let’s take a vote,” Carol suggested. “All in favor of quarantining Patient

Zero, please raise your hands.”

Everyone, including a smirking Ty, raised their hands.

“Oh, come on,” Logan grumbled. “Really? You serious?”

“Motion accepted,” Carol said, wrestling the gavel from the mayor and banging it on the podium.

“Besides, Patient Zero doesn’t have to know she’s been quarantined. Just keep her indoors by any means necessary until she gets better.”

“Or she kicks the bucket,” somebody chimed in.

Nuts. The whole bunch of them. Down to the very last one.

“She’s not Patient Zero, people. Her name is Sky and she’s got the flu, damn it. Not Ebola. Just a common, garden-variety flu.”

“By our calculations, Patient Zero has been here almost twenty-four hours. We’re late on containment,” Carol said.

Logan shook his head in dismay. Man, like talking to a wall.

“You had her hidden away for a whole day?” Ty asked impishly.

“She was just sleeping on my sofa.” Logan realized his mistake right away and turned to Carol and the rest. “You are not burning my sofa. Are we clear?”

Whether it was clear or not, Logan didn’t know, because Carol ignored his words. “And we’ll be monitoring you,” she added while the rest nodded. “At the slightest indication you’re sick—”

“Yeah, yeah, you’ll quarantine me too, and if I don’t get better fast enough, you’ll shoot me and cremate my remains.” Along with the damn couch, of course.

Carol rolled her eyes. “Don’t be silly.”

“Yeah, don’t be silly,” someone interjected. “We’ll autopsy you before that. Dissect you into tiny pieces.”

Jesus fucking Christ. Why couldn’t his neighbors have been the gearheads prepping for solar flares that would fry the grid? More kumbaya. Less ready to dissect.

“This is all your fault, Megan,” he said to his sister, who was sitting two rows behind him.

“Couldn’t you have moved somewhere else? A normal fucking place?”

She just laughed. “You heard the lady. Keep Patient Zero indoors—by any means necessary.”

“Ha. Ha.”

“What? Skills too rusty to keep a woman indoors?” she asked.

“I can help,” Ty added. “Is she pretty?”

Gorgeous, actually. Big, dark eyes. Olive-colored skin. Delicate features. But that was beside the point too.

“Fuck off, both of you,” Logan muttered. Raising his voice, he addressed the crowd again. “You’re certifiable. All of you.”

“I totally agree,” Carol said. “We give you far too much leeway. Look at how flexible we’ve been about your toxic contaminants.”

After a colorful array of jobs all over Europe ranging from translator to chocolatier to travel agent to sushi chef to flight dispatcher, Elle Aycart is certain of one thing and one thing only: aside from writing romances, she has abso-frigging-lutely no clue what she wants to do when she grows up. Not that it stops her from trying all sorts of crazy stuff. While she is probably now thinking of a new profession, her head never stops churning new plots for her romances. She lives currently in Barcelona, Spain, with her husband and two daughters, although who knows, in no time she could be living at the Arctic Circle in Finland, breeding reindeer.

Elle loves to hear from readers!
