Review of Ignite by Amity Cross

Ignite is a story about taking chances…about risking one’s heart even if there’s a distinct possibility it will be broken because living instead of simply existing definitely comes with growing pains. It’s a story about how people see themselves and see one another and the ways that those perceptions are changed through appearances and attitude. It’s about trying to break down walls of insecurity and rebuild self-confidence and positive thinking.

Ignite’s hero and heroine will frustrate readers, but I think that’s normal when it comes to a story whose characters are constantly trying to evolve but end up getting in their own way a significant number of times. Alison Anders is a complex as well as a confusing heroine…she desperately wants to be noticed…to be accepted…to be wanted, but she doesn’t know how to make that happen and the way she chooses to initiate that change could actually get her killed because the Underground isn’t the type of place a woman like Alison should go to reinvent herself, but then again, she doesn’t have any other place to go.

Alison’s metamorphosis happens gradually throughout the story, and it’s a process that repeatedly stops and starts due to her own doubts as well as the actions of others around her. For too many years, she’s isolated herself and allowed others to walk all over her, so it takes time to be strong enough to make the necessary changes, but Alison wants to reinvent herself…to step outside of her shell and break free from her past and have a say in her future, so she has to stop hiding and learn to no longer hide in plain sight.

The Underground may not be the best place for Alison to reinvent herself, but because anything goes there and she can blend in without drawing too much attention to herself, she finds comfort in the darkness and while she gets herself into a few difficult situations, she also blossoms a little bit each time she steps outside her comfort zone and lets her walls down enough to show the her inside.

Liam, known as Blade at the Underground, doesn’t know how to let anyone in beyond a night or two in his bed. In the past, he was always left behind, so now he takes the steps necessary for that not to ever occur again, which means he pushes people away before they can leave him, but for someone like Alison who desperately wants and needs a connection, the game he plays with her is one she may not recover from, which is why I had a difficult time warming up to Liam throughout much of their story. He royally messes up, and while he’s not the only one sending mixed signals and making mistakes, he is in control of his actions and he’s an abrasive asshole when it comes to how he handles Alison, and I had a hard time seeing past that behavior.

“If you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way.”

This is the true lesson of Ignite…and the path one takes to accomplish those goals is definitely not going to be a straight shot, and perhaps if I can remember that and understand that it’s a process with ups and downs, I can get over Liam’s shitty actions and see that in the end, he made the best move possible as a fighter…as a friend…as a lover.

Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. Excerpt

“This life is not glamorous,” Duke told her. “We travel constantly. We sleep on the ground most nights. When we’re not in danger from storms, we’re in danger in cities where we are considered criminals. This life is not for the faint of heart.”

“There are things I do not know, things I will have to learn. But I am capable. I am familiar with sacrifice. I know what it is to make hard choices.”

“Tell me you’re not considering this,” Locke said to Duke.

The old man was silent for a long moment, both Locke and Roar looking to him for support. Duke rubbed at his mustache, a habit of his when he was thinking deeply. “Let’s think about this, Locke. She’s smart. And determined.”

“She’s a child.”

Roar’s shoulders hunched in Locke’s peripheral vision, and he swallowed back the guilt. He could apologize later. For now, it was imperative that he won this argument.

You were a child when I brought you into the fold,” Duke said. “She’s a young woman with a good head on her shoulders. And if this is what she wants, I’m inclined to at least hear her out.”

Just like that, Roar’s shoulders straightened, and Locke turned to watch a devastating smile bloom across her mouth. His weakness when it came to her only made him more cross.

“What skills do you have?” he snapped at Roar.

“Skills?”

“Yes, skills. What can you do? Or do you just plan to tag along for the ride?”

A flush spread over her cheeks, and her voice was tentative when she answered, “I’m good on a horse. Very good.”

Where in the world would she have learned to ride? He quickly hardened his expression. “Horses are fine for travel, but they don’t do well in storms. They, unlike you, have good survival instincts.”

As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Locke could have sworn he felt an updraft—the first sign that bad weather could occur—and he knew that this time he had pushed too far.

Roar marched toward him, spearing a finger into his chest and said, “I can read and write. I can speak Taraanese, Finlaghi, and Odilarian. I can read maps. I know enough about grassland vegetation and wildlife to survive without a market to buy food and drink. I’m good with knives and a bow. I learn quickly, and I’m not afraid of hard work. And I’ve spent my entire life reading as much about storms as I could get my hands on.” For a moment, her voice cracked under the weight of her anger, but she took a huffing breath and continued: “I’m good with numbers. It’s been a while, but I think I can probably still draw the constellations from memory, which should make me decent at navigation. I can—“

“Enough.” Locke’s voice came out in a deep rasp. He captured her long, delicate finger in his fist before she could continue poking him. He felt short of breath at the sight of her—livid and lovely. “Enough.”

The old Locke might have kept arguing, and Roar would have met him toe-to-toe. But if becoming a storm hunter had taught him anything, it was that fighting head-on wasn’t always the way to win. Sometimes strategy was required. He met Duke’s eyes over her shoulder, and if he had thought Roar looked smug before, she had nothing on his mentor. The man raised his eyebrows in a challenge and asked, “You?”

He hated the idea of bringing someone into this dangerous life, but if it was going to happen regardless, he sure as hell wouldn’t hand her safety over to anyone else, not even Ransom. And at the very least, it would give him the opportunity to change her mind. He gritted his teeth and nodded his acceptance.

THE LAST GUY

By Ilsa Madden-Mills and Tia Louise

Publication Date: June 12th

Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Comedy

Synopsis

The first rule of office romance is don’t do it—especially if your dream is to hold the anchor spot on the nightly news and your boss is trying to get you fired.

But one look at Cade Hill, the sexy new sports director, and uptight reporter Rebecca Fieldstone is daydreaming about other things.

Sex in his office…

Sex in the on-set kitchen…

Sex in the supply closet…

She can’t stop thinking about the former NFL quarterback and how perfect he’d look between her sheets—except he’s an arrogant jerk with a huge… ego.

He’s the last guy she’d ever have a one-night stand with.

Cade Hill draws a thick professional line on office romance—until it comes to the hyper-focused Rebecca. He wants her, and he gets his wish when a chance encounter has them having the hottest sex of their lives.

It’s just a hook-up, she says.

When can we do it again? he says.

With Rebecca determined to keep Cade in the friend zone, it’s going to be an uphill battle for Cade to convince her he’s the last guy she’ll ever want.

THE LAST GUY is the first white-hot CONTEMPORARY ROMANTIC COMEDY from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills and Tia Louise. It features Fireball-fueled hookups, Doritos Locos Tacos, attack monkeys, toddlers in tiaras, and one fabulous drag queen. Prepare for frantic clicking (or page flipping!) and smoking-hot sexytimes all the way to the out-of-this-world happily-ever-after.

Review

“The dream is not the destination but the journey.”

That’s a hard lesson for Rebecca Fieldstone to learn because her dream job…her end game has always been to obtain the news anchor position for KHOT News. Rebecca’s put in the time, the effort, and is damn good at her job regardless of how underappreciated she seems to be by one of her bosses.

AND, Rebecca sure as heck can’t get romantically involved with one of her co-workers because she won’t allow anything or anyone to ruin her quest for stardom. So regardless of how sexy and attractive Cade Hill, the sports director, is, Rebecca refuses to give into her lust fueled feelings…too bad she couldn’t rationalize that idea due to one too many Fireballs and one filthy talking ex-NFL superstar.

The Last Guy is the perfect kind of romantic comedy. Both Rebecca and Cade are extremely likable characters, and even though they’re co-workers, which makes any kind of relationship a bit forbidden, that’s not what drives their story line because as Cade so eloquently describes it to Rebecca, they’re working on their own story, which is just as or even more important than the ones delivered on the news each day.

Rebecca may seem like a hot mess, but she’s an endearing one because it’s easy to see the passion she has for delivering the news and with her trademark wink and pencil skirt, she definitely knows the kind of persona she needs to be successful at her job. Things may go a bit sideways throughout the story when it comes to proving herself to her boss, but even through those trials, her professionalism never sways…in fact, if it were me, I probably would have gone off on quite a few of the employees of WHOT News.

Cade may come from money and his NFL career definitely helped pave the way to his job as sports director, but it wasn’t just handed to him and he’s more than just a dumb jock who discusses sports with other dumb jocks. He’s intelligent and compassionate and he knows way more than some people give him credit for, and while Rebecca’s disinterest in him intrigues as well as baffles him, he knows there’s so much more to the “prickly, uptight” newsgirl than she willingly shows and he’s all about finding out the things that make her who she is, both in and outside the newsroom;)

The behind-the-scenes look into the ins and outs of a news station is incredibly important for Rebecca and Cade’s story. In this “competitive, appearance-driven field,” nepotism exists, and people’s best efforts aren’t always awarded due to the nature of the profession and the need to keep things fresh and current. Ratings are what drives this business and with that focus in mind, decisions are made that may cost them a lot more than simply their ranking.

I also have to give a shout-out to Rebecca’s best friend, Chas, and Cade’s brother, Trent; their engaging personalities added the right amount of comic relief in certain situations that allowed both Rebecca and Cade to relax a bit and not make everything so taxing.

Ilsa Madden-Mills and Tia Louise created a world all about commercialism and contemporary news and issues, and in doing so, they not only illustrated the complex workings of a newsroom but also a much needed lesson – one about going after something a person wants regardless of the difficulties or roadblocks that stand in the way.

Excerpt

“Ooh, look! A new one just was added to the database,” Penny coos in excitement as she points to the screen.

We’re gathered around my iPad at Speakeasy, our favorite Midtown haunt, perusing the latest offerings on a bank I’ve been in touch with in Manhattan.

“He’s five-foot-nine. College educated. Plays the violin. And he has red hair,” Delaney reads, then runs her fingers over the ends of my hair. “Do you want little redheaded babies?”

I laugh. “I think I’d like the choice whether they should have red hair or not, and clearly I’m only bringing recessive genes to the equation.”

Penny swipes left dramatically as if the new donor is a Tinder no. “Anyone else? And are we ever going to see what they look like besides when they were five years old?”

I shake my head. “In most cases, only childhood photos of donors are posted. Every now and then you hear of a woman who’s seen adult photos of her donor, but that’s highly unusual, and only allowed at a few, select banks. It’s actually quite rare to even see high school or college photos, since a lot of donors only do it because it’s anonymous.”

Penny points to the screen, reading another donor’s profile in frustration. “Look. This guy is six feet, has blue eyes, played hockey in high school, went to UCLA, and works in tech. But what does he look
like?”

“Unfortunately, we’re just going to have to imagine,” Delaney says, with a heavy sigh.

Penny reaches for her red wine. “That makes me so sad I need a drink.”

“And let’s be honest, looks do matter,” Delaney adds.

I nod vigorously. “They do. That doesn’t make me vain, right?”

My girls shake their heads in unison, defending my stance. “We all want a cute elephant baby for our matriarchy,” Penny says, patting my hand.

I laugh. “But seriously. You think it’s reasonable to want a handsome donor, right? In addition to all the other things that are obviously critical. Not a serial killer. No criminal record. College degree. Height, etcetera, etcetera.”

“Absolutely,” Penny says, setting her wineglass down with a resounding smack. “How are you possibly supposed to say a green-eyed, five-foot-ten, college-educated man with no murder convictions is
enough?”

“It’s like online shopping without seeing what you’re buying,” Delaney adds. “Who buys anything on the Internet without seeing a photo? You don’t shop for shoes just by the size, color, and style. You need to
see them. Try them on.”

“I don’t think trying on is an option.” I wink.

Delaney sticks out her tongue. “But you need to see the goods. You can’t fly blind.”

I reach for my water. No more chardonnay or mojitos for this mama-to-be. I’ve had all my health screenings, too, and my doctor sees no reason why I can’t get pregnant. All I need is the other half. “I
just wish I knew more about these men.”

Penny peers at the site’s latest offerings once more. “This is crazy. You can select whether someone has skills in auto mechanics, plumbing, or kickboxing. You can choose if your donor has detached earlobes, a
particular kind of eye spacing, and his favorite subject in school. You can even opt for someone who’s a good cook. But you can’t see if his jawline is actually square, if his lips are truly full, or if he’s as handsome as you’ve dreamed.”

I scrunch my forehead and imagine my dream candidate. Briefly, my mind is blank, but then an image pops into my head. “I just wish I knew the guy was going to be a Ryder Lockhart level of hot,” I say, matter-of-factly.

“Oh, he is a hottie,” Penny says, and Delaney nods her agreement. They’ve both met him at my work events and the occasional group happy hour.

“He’s gorgeous. Just the other day I found myself cataloging his features. He really does have it going on. Plus, he’s smart and funny and good to animals.”

Penny hums mournfully. “Too bad he’s not a donor.”

“Ha. Yeah, it’s a bummer he hasn’t made a deposit at this sperm bank.” I tap the screen. “I’d order up one serving ASAP. Get that turkey baster inside me stat,” I bark as if I’d be saying that to the nurses
while I tell them to shoot me up with Ryder Lockhart’s DNA.

Wait.

Ryder Lockhart’s DNA.

The clouds part. The sun rises. The bells ring. Never have three words sounded more like a perfect solution to a problem.

COVER REVEAL AND GIVEAWAY: Pitch Please by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Pitch Please

Series: There’s No Crying in Baseball #1

Author: Lani Lynn Vale

Genre: Sports Romance

Release: September 8, 2017

Photographer:  Michael Stokes

Model:  BT Urella

Goodreads:  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35402234-pitch-please

Baseball is life, the rest is just details.

Everyone who’s played the game has heard those words a time or two. But Hancock has heard them his entire life from his parents. His family has lived and breathed baseball even before he started little league.

Hancock “Parts” Peters has a name that inspires grins across many faces, but the moment those faces get their first look at him, those grins slide away.

Hancock is gruff, filterless, and doesn’t give a crap who he offends.  He is the only man in baseball who doesn’t care if he gets an endorsement or not. He’s there to play the game. He’s there to win. He’s there because baseball is his life.

People think he’s a jerk.

And maybe he is. But if that’s how he has to come off to get people to leave him the hell alone so he can play in peace, so be it. The less people he has to worry about offending, the better.

***

Don’t let the fear of striking out hold you back.

Sway Coffman didn’t mean to rock the boat.  She was just there to do her job.

Sure, she was a woman in a man’s world. Yes, she beat out several of those men to get the job as head athletic trainer for the professional baseball team, The Texas Lumberjacks.  And yeah, she now got hate mail from those men.

But she’s good at her job, and she earned the position.

What she is not good at, however, is talking to men.

Men seem to see her curvy hips, large breasts and thick thighs and automatically think she is incompetent.  Because surely a fat girl couldn’t get the job treating some of the most fit and athletic men in the world, right?

Wrong.

This fat girl got the job, and she is proud of it.

What else did she get?

The attention of the sexiest bearded man she’d ever had the pleasure of laying eyes on.

It was enough to bring to her down to her knees…in front of that man, the hot and grumpy baseball player, Hancock Peters.

“Mr. Peters!” Someone called from further down the hallway that led to the field.  “Mr. Peters! Wait!”

Hancock looked over his shoulder, agitation clearly written all over his face.

“I’ve already told you I won’t be doing it.”  Hancock informed the small man.

And he was small.

Maybe not compared to a normal man, but standing next to Hancock the man looked positively minimal.

“Please,” the man continued as if Hancock hadn’t even spoken.  “This is a multi-thousand dollar commercial that we’ve been planning for months. Surely you understand that we’re doing it for…”

“Craig,” Hancock growled.  “I am not doing the Harlem Shake. Do I look like a man that does the fucking Harlem Shake?”

Craig, who I guessed was in control of PR, smiled soothingly.

“Parts,” he held out his hand.

I still wondered why he was called Parts, but I wasn’t ever going to ask him.

It was weird, and it was also a freakin’ secret. Everyone in the entire league wondered and speculated why he was called Parts. Nobody knew, though.

“I’ll be there. But only if I can sit in the back and nobody sees me.”  Hancock conceded.  “And don’t try to move me, or I’m leaving.  Capisce?”

Craig nodded his head urgently.

“How much time do we have until we start?”  Hancock asked Craig.

“Oh, about twenty minutes or so.  Do you need me to bring you anything to drink?”  Craig asked, happy now that he’d gotten his way.

But I knew that Craig hadn’t gotten his way.

Far from it.

If I had my guess, Hancock wouldn’t even be in the commercial.

He’d literally stay on the sidelines and make it a point to stay out of each of every shot, just like he did after games when reporters were hoping to interview him.

Then there were the photos that featured him in them.

None of them were taken with his permission.

Other than the one that the MLB used to show his stats during games, I’d never seen one picture with him looking at the camera.

“No, no drink Craig. Thank you.”  Hancock waved Craig off.

The moment Craig was dismissed, he hurried back in the direction of the field, a freakin’ skip in his step.

When he rounded the corner, I turned to face Hancock fully again.

“What?”  I asked, wondering what that look on his face was about.

“I’m not doing the Harlem Shake.” He repeated.

I held up my hands in understanding.

“I’m not much of a dancer, either. You and me can hang out in the back like the losers we are.”  I teased.

I hadn’t meant that either of us were necessarily real losers or anything, and the moment the words left my lips, I realized how it sounded.

“I’m sorry,” I said, holding up my hand.  “In no way, shape, or form am I accusing you of being a loser.”

He grinned.

“It’s okay.” He winked. “I don’t dance. I don’t do pictures.  In fact, if I had my way, I wouldn’t even be here right now.”

I smiled at him.

“Sway!” Someone called.  “Let’s go! We have to sit together in the front.”

Sinclair, the one man in the entire complex that I didn’t want to see, was standing there sneering at me.

“She’s not sitting in the front, Sinclair.  She’s sitting with me in the back. We have to talk about what I expect out of her this season.”  Hancock rumbled, stopping me with a large hand on my arm when I went to move around him.

I’m a married mother of three. My kids are all under 5, so I can assure you that they are a handful.
I’ve been with my paramedic husband now for ten years, and we’ve produced three offspring that are nothing like us.
I live in the greatest state in the world, Texas.

Introducing book 1 in the Logan & Kayla saga of the Checkmate series from a secret duo of romance authors who teamed up under the USA Today Bestselling pseudonym, Kennedy Fox! This second-chance romance will have you gasping and cheering this two on from the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the final game?

***
Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor.
A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts. Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable—or so he says.

He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.

I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way—messy past and all.

He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.

Checkmate, Knight.

*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.*
**This is book 1 in the Logan & Kayla Saga–a second-chance romance. You don’t need to read any of the other Checkmate series to enjoy this one, but is always recommended as they are both introduced in the earlier books.**

Every part of my body is on fire, fueled by the electricity between Logan and me as his lips glide across the softness of mine. The low hum in my stomach aches when he pulls us apart, and I fight the urge to press my lips back to his.

His lips are red and swollen, probably just like mine are right now. I don’t know what got into him, but Logan and I have never, ever kissed before. Hell, we’ve slow danced before at weddings, but nothing this intimate—ever.

“I think that did the trick,” he finally says, catching his breath. Fred left over two minutes ago.

“Yeah, I think so.” I take a small step back, trying to act unaffected, but the hard beating in my chest gives me away. I know he feels it, too. I just don’t understand why he pretends he doesn’t. “Thanks for your help,” I say, breaking the tension.

“Anytime. It was fun watching him sweat.” He grins, rocking back and forth on his feet, gripping the coffee cup tight in his hand. He’s just as nervous as I am.

“Don’t you get enough of that at work?” I tease.

“Can never have enough.” He flashes a pleased smile.

“You do have some sick fetish for that, don’t you?”

“I do. Gets all my juices flowing,” he quips.

And just like that, we’re back to our platonic friendship as if the kiss never happened. However, the ache between my legs knows otherwise. It happened, and it was hot as hell.

“What are you doing on a dating website anyway?” he asks after I grab another cup of coffee and sit across from him at the table.

“How else am I supposed to meet guys?” I ask, although it’s really a rhetorical question. “Guys in bars just want sex and one-night stands. I have a strict no dating guys from work rule and everyone else is taken or just wants me to be apart of their menage a trois.”

His brows lift. “What kind of people are you hanging out with?”

I sigh. “This city literally has no available, decent, single men. I might as well just move to another planet. Like Pluto. Get as far away from here as possible.”

“Actually, Pluto isn’t a planet anymore,” he tells me matter-of-factly.

I blink, unamused. “Great. I can’t escape this damn city.”

He chuckles, and I only slightly hate that he finds my pathetic dating life entertaining. “You’re still young. No need to panic until you’re like…thirty.”

I grab a piece of his pastry and throw it at him. “You suck.” I scowl. “I’m twenty-six, which means I’m almost thirty, and almost thirty means I should be with the guy I’m planning on marrying. Otherwise, I’ll be forty, my looks will be gone, my boobs will have fallen to my feet, and I’ll have gray hair,” I ramble, knowing I’m over exaggerating, but right now it feels true. Every date is a disaster. More than the last.

I wasn’t looking for Derek Wolfe.

I wasn’t looking for anybody. All I wanted was to start a new life in America. But when I found myself stranded here with no place to go, he came to my rescue, offering me a place to stay.

He’s smart, successful, and sexy as hell—I can barely sleep knowing he’s right down the hall. And when the chemistry between us explodes one night with fierce, fiery passion, it’s hard to deny there’s something real between us.

But he does.

He says he was drunk. He says it was a one-time thing. He says he’s not into guys and what we did meant nothing.

He’s lying. Because it happened again, and again, and again. And it’s better every time.

I know we could be good together, and I want the chance to try, but I’m done hiding. If he’s not strong enough to admit the truth, I’ll have to be strong enough to walk away.
