“You’re going to say no to Benjamin Drake? The man you’ve lusted after for five years? The guy you just spent the night with and can’t even remember a single second of?”

“Don’t remind me.” I reached for the sheet and pulled it over my head. “Tell him I don’t make appearances.”

“It’s for a good cause. It’ll be good for the Crown. It’ll take the spotlight away from Aramis and in turn, Elias and Adeline, and give them a moment’s reprieve.”

I’d gotten used to living under a microscope. Sometimes, I absolutely hated it, but I was the sister of the newest King of France. Living under scrutiny was to be expected. My father’s passing had garnered all of us even more attention from the press, especially Addie and Elias. The paparazzi loved them, but it had gotten to be too much. They couldn’t even walk the Gardens at Versailles without having photos snapped, so I understood when Joss said that this would help to give them a break while they figured things out.

My Review

Like most of L.J. Shen’s hotholes, Hunter Fitzpatrick, to the outside world, is a self-absorbed playboy who thinks with his lower appendage way more than the head on his shoulders, and for that very reason, he finds himself being ‘babysat’ by someone who is the complete opposite of the women he normally spends his ‘time’ with, which is the point, but what that means for Sailor Brennan’s new 6 month ‘assignment’ and both of their futures is still to be determined, especially when Sailor and Hunter’s verbal sparring, pithy exchanges, and volatile feelings change the dynamics of their newfound arrangement, redefining, not only Sailor’s job, but the man Hunter allows people to see.

Sailor is probably one of my favorite LJ heroines, and one of the biggest reasons is that she owns who she is, what she values, and what she stands for…she’s independent, intelligent, and driven to be, not only successful, but a good human being, which is why she’s the perfect woman to show Hunter that allowing people beneath his playboy exterior to the way more complex man he is, is what will set him on the path he needs and ultimately wants to be on, and it’s one where there’s so much more to life than the next party and the next good time girl.

As much as I connected with Sailor from the start, it took me a bit to warm up to Hunter, and I’m not sure if it’s because he’s really good at playing the role of a carefree rich guy that it took quite awhile to get to the heart of who he is, but the more time he spent with Sailor, the more his true nature was revealed, I started to see what Sailor was seeing and understand her love/hate feelings for him and where they were leading them.   

What I always appreciate about Shen’s character exchanges is just how fitting the word choice is that’s used and how fast-paced and dramatic those conversations are that pull readers in and have them inwardly shouting, BURN!

I’m intrigued by the Boston Belles and just how eclectic this group of characters are and with the upcoming releases’ titles, I can only imagine the kind of journeys LJ Shen plans to take, not only her characters, but her readers on as well.
