My Review

The title alone connotes multiple characters in play in a litany of gatherings, acquiring a collection of sorts, but more so in the unraveling of, not only the place, but those who have come together in this setting, and with the group of ‘friends’ involved, it means that nothing is what it seems and everything is a menagerie of chaos, seduction, secrets, and lies, and not everything that comes out of the harvest will be sighing in a pleasurable way.

Even though book three focuses on the evolving relationship of Delphine and Rebecca, what happens between them, what they experience together, also affects the other four friends who have come to Thornchapel. And it’s how Sierra Simone crafts the tenuous relationships between the six people involved that will keep readers wondering if they will all come out whole when everything has been torn apart and stripped down to bare bones, revealing all there is to know, including a bevy of secrets that will redefine everything they know.

Sierra Simone’s lyrical prose gets me every time, pulling me in to the story line and captivating my senses by illustrating both the setting and the dynamics of all those involved in the plot. And strewn through the pages of each book in the series is highly erotic, sensual scenes that eloquently and passionately describe everything that unfolds in such a vivid way that readers will be feeling EVERY emotion felt by each one of the characters.

The one aspect of the story that I struggled with a bit was the multiple perspectives, and it’s not so much that there are too many of them, it’s that they changed between first and third person, which made it difficult to know whose point of view each section is coming from and how close to everything that’s happening each one is.

With the final book titled Door of Bruises and where Simone left this circle of friends at the end of Harvest of Sighs, I’m anticipating one hell of a finale.

My Review

R.S. Grey’s stories always put a smile on my face, not only because she writes some of the best romcoms, enemies-to-lovers’ stories but also because the characters she creates and the dialogue she constructs for them makes my nerdy English teacher heart soar.

Maren Mitchell, the heroine of Love the One You Hate, is the kind of female lead character I love reading about because, as a reader, I can trace her transformation, witnessing how she felt about herself at the beginning of the story and how she changed based on her new circumstances and the relationship she had with Cornelia Cromwell, the woman willing to give her a chance for something better, understanding that Maren is not her past.

The way Maren and Cornelia connected and were there for each other, despite Cornelia’s grandson’s misgivings made Maren understand her worth and know just how much she deserved, and it gave her self-confidence and proved that the woman she was becoming was who she was always meant to be. 

Nicholas Hunt seems to epitomize a rich, pretentious jackass – one who refuses to acknowledge when he’s wrong or when he misjudges someone because, as far as he’s concerned, how he thinks and feels about people and situations is always right, no matter what. Nicholas’ love for his grandmother and his need to look out for her and not allow anyone to take advantage of him guides his rude remarks and unnecessary anger, and it’s understandable that he wanted to protect his grandma, but when he was clearly proven wrong, it frustrated me that he couldn’t own up to it until it was on his terms, but at least he did, and when he truly saw Maren for the amazing woman that she was…I thoroughly enjoyed getting his thoughts and feelings for her from his perspective.

This is a sweet and slow burn romance – one that, in my opinion, is more about the growth of characters than it is about two people falling in love. Don’t get me wrong, I swooned over the scenes where it became clear just how deeply Maren and Nicholas felt for each other and I definitely enjoyed the way they sparred with their words, their dirty looks, and their pithy remarks at the start of the story, but at the heart of this story is Maren letting go of her past and how she was viewed because of it and finding her worth, and she definitely accomplished that while also putting Nicholas in his place, which just so happened to be at her side;)

“So, the water in the barrel contained the normal algae and bacteria buildup you’d expect, along with quite a bit of the same antihistamine Benson told you was in Mrs. Urlich’s bloodstream.”

“Benadryl,” Sam said.

“Correct. That’s what the UV—ultraviolet—spectrophotometry proves. I ran the particulate against shavings from a new Benadryl tablet. It’s a definitive match.”

Lainey’s research matched up with Cici’s vision. “Makes sense.”

“I removed some of the residue from the stuffed animal. Then, I looked at the chemical composition of the particles. It’s the same. Based on the analyses I used, I’m confident that the substance is Benadryl. From the water sample, we pulled trace amounts of saliva. I want to run some more detailed tests that pull the liquid from the minerals.”

“But you think the saliva is Patti’s?”

“Yes. I ran the test twice,” Lainey said, her voice holding a patient tone of someone used to being questioned.

“I’m not questioning your work. I’m just trying to make sense of the details. And, hey, I really appreciate you getting this to me tonight.”

Lainey waited for a moment, no doubt unsure how to reply. Finally, she said, “I thought you should know the substance clumped in one area of the stuffed animal. I mean it diffused when the material became wet. But the mass was localized.”

“What does that mean?” Sam asked.

“My best guess is many pills were involved and the woman spat them out.”

“While fighting off her attacker,” Sam muttered. Impressive. But her ability to fight hadn’t saved Patti Urlich, and that caused Sam’s blood to freeze in his veins.

“What?”

“Nothing. I was talking to myself. And the device?”

“That took a bit more time because it’s outside my area of expertise. But, I spoke with one of our mechanical technicians, and he confirmed the small device you handed over was definitely a video camera. It’s Bluetooth, so it can connect to a device to view the images.”

“Can it record?” Sam asked.

“The camera sees what it sees. There is a transmitter, so the device it transmits to—I don’t know. I’d need to ask the tech who looked at it.”

“I can do that,” Sam said.

“Sure,” Lainey’s tone warmed again. She really did love what she did. “We pulled a partial fingerprint, but I haven’t found a match in the database.”

Sam frowned.

“I’ll keep looking, and I’ll email you the findings.”

“Okay,” Sam said. “And thanks.”

“You bet,” she said. She paused again. “Mr…I mean Detective Chastain?”

“Yes?”

“For what it’s worth, I heard part of your discussion with Dr. Benson. I hope you catch this guy. And soon.”

My Review

Sometimes scars and wounds fester so deep inside someone that it’s impossible to be free completely of them. And, even when rock bottom is hit, and the only way to move forward is to let go and become a different person – someone who doesn’t lose himself in liquor, drugs, or women – it’s still a rigorous climb and one that can only be taken if perspectives change and a shining light finds its way into his life.

Trey Taylor is an enigma and so not who he seems to be or who he wants to be. He definitely lives the rock star life and knows how to play that role and play it well, but that’s not who he truly is and it hasn’t been, maybe since the beginning. He cocky smirks, his piercing blue eyes, his consuming bravado are all part of his act, meant to conceal every ounce of struggle, of rage, of devastation that he does not want to show, at all costs.

A lesser man would have succumbed to the pain, to the demons that constantly want to take him under, and to the broken parts of his heart that he felt would never be pieced back together. But he doesn’t. He fights. He battles…with himself, with his past, with his sinful deeds, and what finds in that fight is there is a way out…a way to move forward…a way to grab and hold on to the happiness he found.

As much as Camilla Deron is a catalyst for Trey’s newfound happiness and a tether from his past brought into his present and future, this story is wholly Trey’s, and I love that A.M. Madden recognized that fact and focused on Trey’s healing and transformation.

A whole Trey is something to behold and the fact that he gets to that point, refusing to give up or fail proves exactly the kind of man he is. And what I love about the man he becomes is that readers still get Trey’s swagger…his corny jokes

What I love about the new and whole Trey Taylor is that readers still get his swagger…still get his more than corny jokes, but what we also get are more smiles, true joy and a whole lot of happiness.

My Review

I am loving this new series by Devney Perry and with the release of book three, Presley Marks and Shaw Valance’s story, I just might have found my favorite Perry heroine. I love Presley’s honesty and the fact that she’s upfront with everything and while she holds herself back from actually doing too much living after she gave her heart away and it was broken, there’s just something about her that resonates with me and makes me cheer for her to find her true happily ever after.

Presley Marks’ new moniker, Stone Princess, may be fitting do to her standoffish personality and her ice-like attitude when it comes to the opposite sex, but she also has every reason to guard, not only her heart, but her entire existence. Saying that her past wasn’t easy is an understatement so making sure that her present and future are everything she wants them to be is her first priority, so I can’t blame her for need to put her heart on lockdown when she was jilted at the altar.

There’s quite a bit to learn about Presley and Shaw and the time is given to allow that information to be dispensed while the characters also work through their own issues and get under each other’s skin as antagonistically as they can, especially Presley. She doesn’t want to lower her walls for anyone, which means that Shaw has his work cut out for him and even though Presley’s chilly reception during their initial interactions should have prevented him from trying, he’s not one to be deterred. I loved watch Shaw’s determination to get what he wants and the fact that his persistence pays off when, slowly but surely, Presley loosens up and gives him parts of herself that she thought she would never offer to anyone again.   

Presley and Shaw couldn’t be more opposite, but maybe that’s exactly why they’re drawn to each other and why despite this foreign new world that Shaw finds himself in, he’s willing to remain and to figure out his place because Presley is more than worth it.
