Prologue
Three Weeks Before Christmas

Dee Kavanagh

“You’re kidding, right?” Dee turned away from the stove to look at her husband of forty years. “Not in your health.”

Seamus grumbled something under his breath, putting the piece of bacon he’d been about to eat back on the serving plate. “One piece of bacon with breakfast won’t kill me.”

“Pfft. You’re mad.” She shook her head, and turned back to stirring the scrambled eggs she was making for her grandkids. “Plus, save it for the kids. They’ll be down for breakfast in a minute.”

Her oldest son, Rory, was away on a romantic weekend trip with his wife, Clare, leaving their two children, Murphy and Brontë, under the care of Seamus and Dee. Dee was, of course, thrilled. There was nothing she loved more than being a mother, and now a grandmother. She would spend all day every day with her grandkids if she could, and her heart was filled to overflowing to have so many now.

At the reminder, Dee gazed at the photo go her grandchildren in a homemade popsicle-stick frame on her kitchen countertop that Murphy had made for her. The photo inside was silly and sweet—all five grandchildren making funny faces at the camera. Well, four of the five. Shea was in the back looking stoically at the camera, which wasn’t unusual for the teenager with special needs. Shea was Kieran’s wife, Fiona’s, biological sister, and when their mother passed away, Fiona and Kieran had adopted her.

Dee didn’t care one bit that they weren’t related by blood. Being loved and part of their family didn’t have a DNA requirement, and that was something she’d raised all her boys to know.

Next to Shea in the photo was Rory and Clare’s two children, Murphy and Brontë. Murphy was crossing his eyes and Brontë was sticking her tongue out, laughing. Gavin was on the floor in front of them, his little arm around Ava’s shoulder as they both made faces at the camera. Gavin was Kieran and Fiona’s son, and the youngest of the entire group. Ava was Jimmy’s girlfriend Sophie’s daughter from a previous relationship, and had been embraced by the family when Sophie and Jimmy began dating.

“Have you checked your sugar yet?” Dee asked, plating the scrambled eggs and adding a serving spoon before placing it on the kitchen table next to the bacon and biscuits.

“Not yet.” Seamus pulled a blood glucose monitor out of a kitchen drawer and began swabbing his finger with an alcohol wipe. He barely looked up at her, his answers always as succinct as possible. He’d always been brusque, but this was different.

His recent diagnosis of diabetes had thrown them a major curveball, and completely changed their lives. It was a struggle, however, because the man loved his carbs and sugar. Changing sixty years of unhealthy eating habits had caused a lot of friction between them.

Wiping her hands off on a towel, Dee approached her husband’s side and watched as he pricked his finger and dabbed a drop of blood onto a testing strip.

“See? Healthy as all hell.” He turned the monitor towards her when it displayed his results, which thankfully were in a great range. “You worry too much.”

“I know. I can’t help it.” Dee sighed, and glanced toward the hallway to make sure the kids weren’t about to walk in. Returning her gaze to her husband, she placed a hand on his upper arm. “Seamus?”

He grunted. Forty years and he couldn’t even respond with a word?

“Next month is our anniversary.” She blinked quickly, taming the tears that wanted to flow. “I was thinking maybe we book ourselves a trip. Or a cruise. Get away and celebrate.”

He shrugged and then began putting away his supplies. “Fine.”

That’s it. “Damn it, Seamus!”

“What?” He turned bewildered eyes to her. “What’s wrong?”

“You, that’s what. You’re being a fecking asshole. I know that I’m being strict with this new diet, but the doctor said you’d die. You were nearly in a coma, Seamus. Your sugar was hundreds above where it should have been. Do you know what that was like for me?” Her voice was cracking, full of emotion as anger and heartbreak surged through her heavily Irish accented words. “I’ve spent more of my life as your wife than I ever was anything else. Losing you…shite. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t wake up every morning and not have you next to me. I—”

“Dee…” Seamus reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her to his chest and wrapping her in a hug. “Feck. I’m sorry. You know I don’t mean it. I’m a grumpy old bastard.”

“Such a bastard,” she mumbled into his shirt, sniffling, twisting her fingers in the fabric.

He chuckled, kissing the top of her head. “I know you’re just trying to keep me healthy. I’m trying, too. It’s hard, but I’m trying. I’d never do anything to shorten my time with you on this earth.”

Dee felt her heart soften again, the tension of their recent fiction sliding away. After almost forty years together, fighting was nothing new for them. In fact, it was one of the things they did best. He was an asshole, and she had known that the day they met, but he was also a wonderful husband and an even better father and grandfather.

“I love you, Dee.” He kissed her softly, and she felt the same flutter in her heart that he’d made her feel since the first time they’d laid eyes on one another. His voice deepened, developed a huskier lilt. “Maybe once the kids leave, I can show you how much.”

“Sweet talker,” she teased, whacking his arm before turning back to the table.

“Grandad!” Murphy came skipping into kitchen and tossed himself at his grandfather.

Seamus caught him just in time and swung him high above his head as the young boy’s laughter filled the air while he soared in the safety of his grandfather’s arms. “Hey, Murph! Did you sleep all right?”

“Eh.” Murphy shrugged and wiggled his way back down to the floor, turning his affections to Dee this time. “It’s okay. Hi, Nanna!” He squeezed her waist in a hug, his little head pressing into her stomach.

Dee picked him up and covered his cheeks with kisses. “Is my grandbaby hungry? Breakfast is ready!”

“Yes! Hey, Nanna, guess how old I’m going to be next week?” Murphy held up both hands, one with all his fingers up, and the other with only one. “Guess!”

“Hmmm.” She placed a finger on her chin. “I think twenty-seven, right?”

“No!” His laughter peeled out of him, warming her heart. “Guess again!”

“Thirteen?”

“Nope!” Murphy sat at the kitchen table, kicking his feet back and forth underneath him.

His little sister, Brontë, toddled into the kitchen, still holding her favorite blanket, her thumb shoved in her mouth.

“Hey, baby girl, do you know how old your brother will be next week?” Dee scooped up the young girl and kissed her.

“Six!” She burst out, her wet thumb popping from her mouth.

“Is that right? Six? I can’t believe it!” Dee feigned as Murphy vigorously nodded his head in agreement.

Dee sat Brontë in a booster seat at the table and filled both of their plates with eggs and bacon. A mournful expression crept over Seamus’ face as he stared at his bowl of oatmeal and pushed around the apple slices on top with his spoon.

Murphy held up both hands, six fingers raised. “Six, Nanna! Mama says I’m getting too big. She cries when I say that.”

Dee chuckled. “Well, mamas wish their kids stayed kids forever. We get sad thinking about them growing up.”

“Are your kids growed up?” Murphy asked, spooning a large bite of scrambled eggs into his mouth.

“My first kid is your daddy, baby,” Dee reminded him, sitting at the table between her grandkids.

“Oh, right.” Murphy looked deep in thought as he considered what she’d said. “That’s weird.”

Seamus laughed at that one then ruffled Brontë’s hair. She beamed at him, and offered him a piece of bacon which he only pretended to eat with loud, chomping noises that made her giggle. Dee loved watching Seamus with their grandkids—the love between them was so beautiful.

“Did Daddy look like me when he was your kid?” Murphy continued his line of questioning. Actually, his questions never stopped. The boy was a sponge, asking everyone a million questions all day long. She didn’t mind one bit, though.

“His hair was a bit darker, and he was shorter. A little stockier. You’ve got your mother’s height and slim frame. Very lucky, because your mother is beautiful.”

“You’re beautiful, too, Nanna.”

“Thanks, Murph.” She smiled. Kids were a goddamn blessing. “Do you like the eggs? You’ve only eaten one bite.”

He pushed some more around on his plate. “I think I’m not very hungry.”

“You said you were.”

The little boy sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “I know. I changed my mind.”

Dee frowned, but squeezed his shoulder. “Are you feeling all right?”

He nodded. “Can I be excused? Grandad said I could play Xbox today!”

Seamus grinned, ignoring the look she shot him.

“Okay, but only for an hour. After that, no more electronics this weekend.”

“Whyyyy?” Murphy began to whine. “Just a little bit!”

“Hey, no whining,” Dee reminded him. “Santa’s coming in three weeks. We’ve got to be good to be on the nice list and get lots of presents.”

That reminder perked him right up. “I’m going to be the nicest boy on the whole list!”

“Good job!” she cheered, making a mental note to finish her Christmas shopping soon.

Murphy was already up and out of his seat, heading for the living room. They’d already made sure Rory set the games up before he left, so that the parental controls were on. For the life of her, Dee couldn’t figure out how to work the blasted machine herself.

Brontë smiled, her mouth full of food. “Nanna, can I have his bacon?”

“That’s my girl.” Seamus laughed, giving Brontë a thumbs-up. “My genes are strong.”

Dee rolled her eyes at her husband. “You can have one more piece, baby girl. Seamus, should I text Clare and tell her Murph isn’t eating?”

“Nah,” he replied. “I’m sure he’s fine. Let them have their romantic weekend in peace.”

“You’re right,” she agreed.

He lifted one brow, eyeing her. “You’re going to text her anyway, aren’t you?”

“Well, she’s a mom. She’ll want to know.” Dee was already pulling out her phone and scrolling to Clare’s name. “I’m sure she won’t mind.”

Seamus chuckled. “I love you, Dee.”

“Love you, too, baby.”

“I love you, both!” Brontë added herself to the conversation.

Dee smiled over her phone at the little girl, her heart overflowing.

A sexy, standalone novel from the New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of the Play-by-Play series and Hope series.

Ellie Washington lost her husband in a tragedy five years ago at Christmas. She wouldn’t have made it through her grief if not for her husband’s brother, Nick, who helped her pick up the pieces of her shattered life. And with every year, her feelings for Nick have grown. Now she realizes she might be in love with him, but that’s not fair, because Nick deserves a life that isn’t about his brother’s widow and son.

Sharing his life with Ellie and her son has been the balm that soothed Nick’s soul after losing his brother. Now that friendship has turned into something deeper. Nick doesn’t want to upset the status quo, but someone has to make the first move, and it’s time they figure out if their feelings are real. Nick believes in what they have. He also believes in Christmas miracles, and he thinks they’re both long overdue for one.

Review

I love holiday stories because they tend to put into perspective what’s most important in life, offering insights into the wonders of love, faith, and devotion and illustrating the miracles that can happen as long as people are willing to task a risk and grab hold of what life is offering them.

In Love Me By Christmas, Jaci Burton gives readers Ellie and Nick’s story – one that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking due to the circumstances that brought them together. For the past five years, since losing her husband, Ellie hasn’t truly been living, partly because she doesn’t know how to move on after such a devastating loss and partly because the guilt she feels about perhaps finding love again, with her deceased husband’s brother, forces her to keep Nick at arm’s length regardless of how alive she feels with him by her side.

Burton truly captures Ellie’s conflicted feelings throughout the novella. Is it frustrating to witness her hot/cold demeanor when it comes to Nick and what she wants/needs from him? Absolutely, but it’s the reality of her situation. Grief and now guilt dictate Ellie’s words and actions and until she’s truly ready to let her husband go, she’ll never be able to move on with Nick because no matter how much her heart wants her to, illogically, in her mind, it seems wrong to feel what she does for Nick due to their forced connection and no one can change her mind but herself.

Nick has to be one of the most patient and loving heroes I’ve read about in quite some time. Opening his home and his heart to his brother’s widow when he was dealing with his own grief is above and beyond what any family member should do, but there was no other action to be taken from his perspective because Ellie is family and Nick is all about his family.

There were a number of times in the story where Nick could have given up on building a life with Ellie as a man and a woman in love, but no matter how frustrated or hurt Ellie’s actions made him, he still ONLY ever saw her by his side, so the payoff of his faith in her and them allowed Ellie to have the strength and the courage to follow her heart instead of her head.

Love Me By Christmas definitely got me in the holiday spirit and it also made me smile and swoon because Nick, Ellie, and Henry have been a perfect little family from the start, even if it took them a bit more time for John’s Christmas Miracle to play out.

“Didn’t you like staying there?” I ask, continuing to look ahead.
“It wasn’t for me. The big cities, the chaos, too many people—no, I definitely prefer places like this.”
“Like Howth? You prefer this town of fishermen to fame and success?” I say without realizing and turn my head to gauge his reaction. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
He looks at the horizon in heavy silence, brooding at the words we have not exchanged.
“How do you know?” he asks without having the courage to look at me.
“The other night in the pub, some girls recognized you. You were—you are—famous? Yes?”
He lets out a cynical laugh before responding.
“Famous—not really. I cut a few songs, did a few concerts, that’s all.”
“And why did you stop?” I ask uncertainly. I’m afraid I may have gone too far.
“It wasn’t for me and then—I left something behind.” And as he says it, his gaze falls right on me making me blush terribly.
“A-a g-girl?” I look away immediately while wishing the sand would swallow me up.
The truth is I don’t want to hear his answer.
Liam remains silent for a few minutes and in that time I think my heart might really stop and need some air. Then he gets up and squats down in front of me, forcing me to look at him. He takes my chin in his fingers and looks me right in the eyes; they call to me and unsettle me like the sea in a storm that leaves no escape.
“Whatever it was is not important now,” he says simply and then does something I would not have expected.
What happens is, his forehead rests against mine.
What happens is, he smiles at me before closing in on my lips.
What happens is, I feel the heat of his breath on my mouth.
What happens is, his lips press against mine, delicate, sweet and wet.
What happens is, my heart flies out of my chest and lands right between his hands.
What happens is that I understand I am in love and in the same moment I realize that I have definitely been in love before.

TEMPT ME Excerpt

I frown, peering over at the boat in question, now even blurrier than before. “I didn’t notice anyone there.”

“Not surprised. Come on. You need to go to bed.” His hand slides around my lower back and prods me toward shore.

A rare defiant streak surges. I didn’t fly thousands of miles away from my overbearing mama only to be scolded and ordered around by a stranger. I jab his chest with my finger. “You can’t tell me what to do. You’re not the boss of me. The boss is the boss of me. And he can boss me.” I’m not sure that made much sense.

“And who is he?” Amusement laces his tone.

“I don’t know. Some arrogant big bad wolf billionaire who sleeps with Victoria’s Secret models and changes women like underwear. He sounds like a complete jerk. But you’re not him. You’re…” I’m leaning against his chest now. A broad, solid chest, his muscles hard against me. I reach up with the hand I used to poke him to touch the few weeks’ worth of growth covering his face, my fingertips scratching across the coarse hair. “A lumberjack.”

“A lumberjack.”

“Yes. With this beard and this,” I rub my hand over his flannel checkered jacket, sitting open, and then to the shirt beneath, reveling in the ridges of his stomach. “Definitely a lumberjack. Did they hire lumberjacks to cut wood for that giant fireplace in there? They’ve hired people for everything else. I mean, seriously, who comes up to Alaska to get their pubic area waxed and their hair colored? And yet there’s a full-service salon!”

His hands have found my waist again. He takes several steps backward, pulling me along with him.

But I dig my heels in. “I’m not going anywhere until I check the water for my glasses! I have a flashlight!” I yell, earning his shush.

He heaves a sigh. “Will you let me take you back to your cabin immediately after?”

“Once I do that, I will happily go to bed with you. Not with you. I’ll go to bed. I’m not going to bed with a lumberjack.” My tongue feels thick and slow as it trips over my rambling words.

“Fine. But I’m holding on to you the entire time. The owner doesn’t need any of his employees drowning.”

“Deal.”

He leads me back to the edge and drops to his knees with me. “Sit your ass right down or you’ll end up pulling us both in.”

“That’s no way to speak to a lady.”

He snorts. “It is when she’s as stubborn as a mule and as drunk as an Irishman.”

Enthralling and drop dead gasp-worthy.

– CD Reiss, New York Times Bestselling Author

American King, the stunning conclusion to The New Camelot Trilogy by Sierra Simone is LIVE!!

American-King-PRINT-FOR-WEB.jpg

They say that every tragic hero has a fatal flaw, a secret sin, a tiny stitch sewn into his future since birth.  And here I am.  My sins are no longer secret. My flaws have never been more fatal.  And I’ve never been closer to tragedy than I am now.

I am a man who loves, a man whose love demands much in return.  I am a king, a king who was foolish enough to build a kingdom on the bones of the past. I am a husband and a lover and a soldier and a father and a president.

And I will survive this.

Long live the king.

Darkest Temptation, an all-new standalone in The Dark Ones Saga from New York Times Bestseller Rachel Van Dyken is LIVE!

DarkTemp_eBook_LowRes.jpg

Darkest Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Publishing Date: October 31st, 2017

I’m a werewolf King who chose to step down out of grief for my mate.

For centuries I’ve been alone, choosing to live a life of modesty despite the wealth surrounding me.

I deserve to be punished.

I crave things I have no business craving.

And it is manifesting itself in a way I’m terrified I won’t be able to control any longer.

Especially since she arrived.

Vampire. Orphan. Beaten beyond recognition.

My blood calls to her in a way that makes no sense.

I’m a wolf.

She’s a vampire.

The two don’t mate.

They barely tolerate one another.

All it takes is one slip of control on my part — one taste.

And I doom us all.

Then again, I never knew what is lurking inside has the power to balance good and evil.

Review

There’s never been a more important or a more difficult battle than the one between good and evil, and while those looking to wreak havoc on the world for their own benefit have an arsenal of strength and darkness to wield against their enemies, those who work to bring balance to Earth…bring balance between the righteous and the sinners have the Creators’ power behind them, even if they are unaware of who/what they truly are and why their eternal lives have taken the paths they have.

Mason is quite the intriguing alpha male. He is the TRUE King of the Wolves, but he has lost the will to do more than merely exist due to all that he has lost. The ways he transforms the further readers get into the story proves how unique and essential he is, not only to his friend and his true mate, but also to the world as a whole. It almost seems as if Rachel Van Dyken constructed a whole new being as Mason’s origins were further revealed and the lost pieces of himself returned and redefined the man/wolf he was. The shell of  an existence that Mason was leading is no longer possible and Van Dyken portrays that idea through Mason’s perspective as well as how he is perceived by both his friends and his enemies.

Serenity is definitely more than she appears to be. She may be broken and battered, not only physical but mentally as well, but she is a warrior, which makes sense due to where her rightful place in life/love is and how she’s looked for what and who has always been hers.

Mason and Serenity’s story is book four in the series, and it is one hell of a game changer for ALL otherworldly beings in Rachel Van Dyken’s The Dark Ones Saga, and while their book can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the previous texts because it allows readers to have a clearer picture of the forces working against this unlikely duo as well as the history of Mason’s friends and what their roles will be in the battle that’s to come.

In paranormal romances, world building and character development is by far the most intriguing part to me as a reader because those qualities allow readers to have a clear vision of the kind of setting the characters must contend with and a comprehensive look at what makes these supernatural characters react and act how they do when confronted with their pasts, with new revelations, and with other beings who want to help as well as harm the hero and heroine. And Rachel Van Dyken does a fantastic job of showcasing her other worldly beings in a setting that works behind the scenes of contemporary society, attempting to keep everything at the status quo and revealing pertinent information when the moment calls for it while still leaving unanswered questions, moving the series forward with reasonable assurance that things are ‘safe’ for now, but that doesn’t mean that the world will not be turned on its head at any given time.

Excerpt

The air around me thickened with a sweet-smelling fog. I inhaled and closed my eyes, allowing my baser instincts to take over.

“Wolf.” She whispered my name.

I sniffed. The voice was not familiar. It was not my mate. It was… other.

“Wolf,” she beckoned again.

Branches crunched beneath my feet as I made my way closer to the sweet scent, closer to the warmth, closer to what I should have been running from.

I was already mated.

And yet — I was being pulled.

Like a siren’s song.

I hated sirens.

Every last one of them.

But only the strongest were male.

This — I sniffed the air again as ecstasy took over — this was no male.

This was all female.

The instinct to protect kicked in, forcing a surge of adrenaline through my limbs as I staggered toward the trees.

Green eyes blinked through the fog.

I stilled.

My breath caught.

Vampire.

I frowned, reaching for her.

“Kiss me, Wolf.”

Why was I tempted?

Why did I want to touch this being?

When every hair stood on end like she was foe not friend. When I had a mate back home that I loved more than life itself.

Confusion warred with disgust, and then the vampire stood on her tiptoes and pressed her cheek against mine, the way my people greeted.

But she was no wolf.

Her lips grazed the outside of my ear before she bit down onto my neck…

I jerked awake. Sweat pooled the bed like I’d just taken a shower.

And my mate, the one I was so convinced would be lying right next to me, was gone.

She’d been gone.

Over a hundred years.

And every year, like clockwork, on the anniversary of her death.

I saw my vampire.

She bit me.

And I woke up with a bruise on my neck as if it were real.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: My Week with the Bad Boy by Brooke Cumberland and Lyra Parish

Title: My Week with the Bad Boy

Series: My Week, #1

Cover Photographer: FuriousFotog

Cover Model: Joey Berry

Cover Designer: RBA Designs

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: November 2, 2017

Never trust a man who answers the front door wearing nothing more than a pair of low-cut jeans and a panty-melting smirk.

That should’ve been my first sign.

I write about guys just like him for a living—sexy and charming, yet reluctant to get into a serious relationship. His body screams sex appeal, but his condescending personality makes him a classic fuckboy.

And I want nothing to do with that.

Writing romance novels comes with its perks—traveling, meeting new people, creating characters from the voices in my head—but Ethan Rochester enters my life and rearranges all my preconceived notions about writing what inspires you.

One week is all it took. One week to realize that not everything is as it seems.

One week with the bad boy, and I wanted more.

Amazon International: http://myBook.to/mwwtbb

Goodreads: http://bit.ly/2fFJpmG

One week…

To write in a peaceful environment

To work through her writer’s block

To finish a deadline

Nowhere in Vada’s plans did it involve lusting over a half-naked man who seems to be nothing but a glorified bad boy or spending a week in the sack with said hot as hell artist after she sees beneath his façade and wants to explore the instant chemistry between them, but that’s exactly what she finds herself doing when she escapes the busyness of her life in order to write all the words she needs to type ‘The End’ for her latest novel, and while the plan for the week still holds true, Vada now has other ‘activities’ to occupy her time away, which could either be the best or the worst thing for Vada and for Ethan because neither of them imagined falling for a complete stranger after only 7 days or the fact that they, specifically Ethan, would have to deal the past in order to commit to a much happier future.

I’m usually not a huge fan of insta-love/lust, but because the writers put a set timeframe on how long their hero and heroine would have in order to explore their feelings for one another, it helped me to understand that the limited days they had together would definitely drive their physical and emotional connection far more rapidly than it would if they had more time to explore the attraction to each other.

Because the story is told in both Vada and Ethan’s perspective, readers learn why both characters act the way that they do and why it’s difficult for them to let go of the stressors in their life and simply enjoy their time together. I do wish readers would have been given a few more insights into all that has made them the people they are today so that a more tangible connection could be made between readers and characters, but it didn’t prevent me from enjoying the story line, especially the times they lost themselves in one another’s bodies because that’s when they seemed to speak to each other, indicating their feelings without uttering a single word.

My Week with the Bad Boy is a fast-paced and sexy story that illustrates just how fast and easy it is to become addicted to someone despite the obstacles and limited timeframe. What Vada and Ethan shared during their week together led them to live their life a bit differently and the Epilogue provides readers with so much needed insight in order to feel like there was a chance for one week to turn into forever.

Love on the Edge of Time by Julie A. Richman

Publishing Date: November 13th, 2017

He likes whiskey and wild women

She likes Ben & Jerry’s

He’s about to get kicked out of his own band

She ate her way off the Miss America pageant circuit

What could these two possibly have in common?

A psychiatrist

A lot of unresolved issues

A whole bunch of shared lifetimes

And a love that is never-ending

As bad boy rocker, Jesse Winslow, and former pageant queen, Kylie Martin, each fight the demons screwing up their lives, the one person who holds the key to healing their ills and reuniting two souls that have searched for one another, lifetime after lifetime, is the only one who knows the whole truth.

And keeping that truth from them may just be in preeminent psychiatrist Dr. Claire Stoddard’s best interests.

Claire has committed the ultimate sin in the medical world. She’s fallen for the one man she’s forbidden to love.

Her patient, Jesse Winslow.

And she’s not about to lose him to Kylie Martin… Again.

Excerpt

I’m at a table in the back-right corner, he texted.

In a cab a few blocks away. See you in 5.

Kylie was running a few minutes late, not rudely late, just fashionably late. She had pulled nearly everything she owned out of her closet, trying to find something that was flattering, yet rock-star cool and ‘Yeah, I know his ex is a top model’. ‘So What’ chic was the look she was trying to pull off. It wasn’t easy. With the recent weight loss, she was between sizes. Her big girl clothes, as she was now referring to them, looked like misshapen potato sacks on her and her pageant days’ wardrobe were nowhere near an option yet, and might not ever be.

She made the decision. It’s New York, seriously, just pick something black. And so black it was. Black legging jeans, black high boots, a thin, black, cashmere V-neck sweater, all topped with a black leather jacket. Twisting her hair, she clipped it up, then pulled a few strands out to frame her face and a few at the base of her neckline. It was messy and sexy.

Standing in front of the mirror, she wondered for whom she was dressing. Jesse? Well, yeah, you don’t want to be seen with a rock star looking like a beast on parade. The paparazzi? Same logic applied as for Jesse. The skinny model ex-girlfriend? Well, not really for her, but for everyone who would make a comparison. For herself? C’mon, he’s Jesse Fucking Winslow. Get real.

As she made her way to the back of the darkened restaurant, Kylie could feel her spine straighten, shoulders fall back, chin up. The only thing missing was the sash as she gracefully floated past tables, the male occupants covertly attempting to sneak an appreciative look without alerting their female companions.

I’ve still got it.

And her confidence soared as she sat down in the chair next to one of the sexiest, most recognizable men on the planet, and he had watched every man in the restaurant check her out.

“You look gorgeous, Toots.”

“Thank you.” It was still surreal that she was sitting here with her new buddy.

“I’m going to have to fight half the guys in the restaurant off you.”

Laughing, “I doubt that.” Kylie rolled her eyes.

About the Author

I must’ve been 5 or 6 when I started writing “stories”. I would write them and hide them.

Not wanting anyone to see my “secret” thoughts. I needed to write – even back then. Now I’m just not hiding them anymore. Is that a sign of maturity? Nah…

Writer, photographer, insatiable wanderluster, edge-player, foodie, music addict, pop culture fanatic, animal lover, warrior for the rights of people and planet, and avid cusser (am a Native

New Yorker, so very little offends me…and if I am offended, it must be pretty freaking bad..like

bad grammar!)

I am a big believer in signs and if we keep ourselves open, there are guideposts all along the way. Stay humble. Be true. Be you.

Life is not a dress rehearsal…

RELEASE DAY BLITZ AND REVIEW: THE FORTUNATE ONES by R.S. Grey

R.S. Grey’s next romantic comedy, THE FORTUNATE ONES, is available now!

Check out my review AND Read a sneak peek below!

 About THE FORTUNATE ONES

At Twin Oaks Country Club, there are the fortunate ones, and then there are the rest of us: the waiters, the caddies, the valets, and in my case, the cabana girls. Most days, I’m poolside in a pleated skirt, dishing out margaritas to tycoons and titans. It’s not exactly my dream job, but it does come with one perk…

James Ashwood.

He’s my silver lining in a custom black suit.

Besides being a legacy member at the club, he’s a tech mogul and Austin’s most eligible bachelor. Oh, and those dimples? Yeah, they make my stomach dip too.

On good days, I catch his sleek Porsche winding down the tree-lined drive. On better days, I steal a glimpse of his handsome profile as we pass in the hall. And on the absolute best day, I find him alone at the bar, looking for company.

“Come have a seat.”

Those four little words set me down a path I never could have imagined. Private planes, penthouse suites, and temptations around every corner make it impossible to keep my distance. His world feels decadent and wild—but overindulgence comes with a cost. Every kiss comes with strings. Every erotic encounter is a promise I’m not ready to keep.

When I pump the brakes, he hits the gas. James doesn’t want to go slow—he wants a commitment.

And the thing about the fortunate ones?

They’re used to getting what they want.

Review

I love romantic comedies…there’s just something about escaping inside of a book that is rich in sarcastic comments, funny one-liners, and hilarious antics that I find soothing for my snarky soul, and R.S. Grey’s stories are some of my favorite when it comes to laugh out loud dialogue and comical situations.

I was intrigued with Brooke and James’ story from the very beginning, partly because Brooke is definitely my kind of sassy and independent heroine but also because the title’s play on words is right in my English teacher wheelhouse. The idea that those individuals who are legacy members of Twin Oaks are in some way classified as ‘fortunate’ when most of them seem to be nothing but rich snobs underserving of their extravagant lifestyle is what intrigues me the most about the setting of the story and the secondary characters who seem to repeatedly squabble about their supposed ‘misfortunes’ when it comes to not obtaining everything their heart desires.

The country club members’ fascination and obsession with James Ashwood is a plot point that drives the story, and the fact that, at least at the start, Brooke doesn’t give James the same kind of attention, even if she finds him intriguing, which makes the push and pull between them that much more realistic because it’s going to take more than an attraction to make Brooke reassess her plans and take on someone as aloof as James seems to be.

I have to admit that, at first, I didn’t know how R.S. Grey was going to bring Brooke and James together because they both had such clear ideas about what they wanted their lives to be like and I didn’t think they could be swayed by a gorgeous face or great chemistry…but that’s where great character development and relationship building does its job to persuade and I was definitely sold by the time these two driven characters allowed their feelings for one another to be a guiding principle for their future decisions.

Because The Fortunate Ones is told strictly through Brooke’s perspective, I did feel a bit disconnected from understanding who James truly is at his core. Throughout the text, readers are provided with other people’s opinions of him and the type of man he is, but we don’t really see him through his own eyes, even with the dialogue that he does say. James is definitely a complex man – one who has a clear vision for his life, and I guess I just wanted a bit more insight into everything that makes him, him.

I find it so easy to lose myself in R.S. Grey’s worlds and the words she uses to craft them. The way in which Grey shows readers who the main characters are through their internal and external musings as well as their actions allows readers to truly understand all that is involved in every decision made and perspective gained, and while each story is meant to be a romantic comedy, it also has heart…maybe even a bit of grit to it that illustrates Grey’s ability to capture snapshots of life and all the highs and lows that come with them.

“I missed you today,” he says, his heated gaze lingering on my body.

I step back, and he follows.

He looks like he’s cornering his prey.

“Apparently not enough to make it to dinner,” I point out icily.

“I called the restaurant and told them I’d be late. Didn’t they tell you?”

I cross my arms and glance away.

“Brooke.” He steps closer and gently lifts my chin, forcing me to look back at him. “Fight with me tomorrow.”

I narrow my eyes, angry with him for shelving this discussion so casually. To him, it doesn’t matter that I sat in that restaurant alone, looking like a fool for nearly two hours. He’s brushing off my anger, stepping closer and forcing his way past my defenses.

“I think I’d like to talk about it now.”

I catch the beginning of a smirk just before he leans in to kiss my cheek.

“Are you sure there isn’t anything you’d rather be doing right now?”

He uncrosses my arms and brings them up over his shoulders then steps closer, towering over me. My arms tighten around his neck, but still, I turn away, keeping my mouth from him. His breath hits my neck and he pulls me taut against his hard body, growing more impatient with every moment I try to resist.

“Brooke,” he whispers huskily.

My eyes flutter closed as he bends and presses a kiss to my cheek, my chin, then lower, tipping my head back so he can reach the smooth recess at the nape of my neck. I shiver and he groans, obviously aware of what his touch is doing to me.
